Glasgow taxis are traditionally black hackney cabs, but these days many are brightly painted with adverts. Nevertheless, they are recognizable by the distinctive shape and the "taxi" sign on the roof, which is lit up when the taxi is available for hire. There are about 1,500 City Council licensed hackney cabs in Glasgow. Private minicabs cannot be hailed on the street, but are often cheaper. You can get taxis at the designated ranks, which are signposted as well as marked on the asphalt, or by phoning the company or hailing one on the street if the sign is lit up. Taxi stands can be found at Central Station at the Gordon Street and Union Street exits, at the North Hanover Street exit at Queen Street Station and at all exits from Buchanan Bus Station. Most taxis have a maximum capacity of five people and almost all of them offer disabled access. There is a minimum fee of £1.60 and once that is exceeded it goes up at 20p intervals, it costs approximately £2.40 for a two kilometer journey. The meter and a table listing supplementary charges for bank holidays or exceeding the city boundary are visible to passengers. Review © 2007, Wcities |
