12-52

Pleasant place with plenty of seafood
Linnégatan 52
Gothenburg 413 08
Sweden
+46 31 12 5211
12-52 is situated quite far up on Linnégatan, near Linnéplatsen. The restaurant is bright and inviting and the large terrace has a nice view of the often-crowded street. There is plenty of seafood on the menu; the starters especially being made with marine ingredients. But a selection of game is also available, including deer. The cheaper bistro menu offers a large variety of dishes. Lunch is served every weekday, as is usual in Sweden. There are two dishes, one that goes by the name of Swedish Tradition and one called Nytt o Lätt (New and Light), with fewer calories. There is also always a soup of the week. The nearest tram stop is Linnéplatsen, where lines 1 and 2 stop, but the walk from Järntorget isn't exceptionally long, and more trams stop there.

7:ans

Hamburgers on the way home
Vasagatan 7
Gothenburg 411 24
Sweden
+46 31 701 7725
People walking west after visiting late bars and clubs rarely manage to pass 7:ans without buying something for that early morning hunger. The hamburgers and milkshakes are great, and there are often special deals. If you run out of money at the bar, a Pommes with Mexidressing (a plate French fries with strong Mexican sauce) for SEK19 (EUR2.24) is recommended. To get here, take trams 2 or 3 to Vasa Viktoriagatan.

Ada's

Inexpensive local restaurant
Herkulesgatan 3A
Gothenburg 41701
Sweden
+46 31 65 4095
The low ceiling of this place, and its wooden tables and benches establish a beer-hall atmosphere, and perhaps also the illusion that you are outdoors when actually indoors. The menu is simple, with plenty of meat, a little fish, a little pasta and a few smaller dishes. Drinks and ice creams are always included in the children's menu. Happy Hour takes place every day between 3p and 10p, when a large draught beer costs SEK25 (EUR2.95). Live music is played every Friday and Saturday. Ada's hardly belongs to the crème de la crème of Gothenburg's restaurant life, but offers inexpensive, good food and quick service for those undeterred by cluttered walls and a large, rowdy bar. The nearest tram stop is Hjalmar Brantingsplatsen, served by tramlines 2 and 5 and plenty of buses.

Amsterdammertje

Dutch genius near Ullevi
Odinsgatan 19-21
Gothenburg 41103
Sweden
+46 31 15 5709
This is something as unbelievable as a Dutch neighbourhood restaurant, located in between Ullevi and the train station. It offers traditional Dutch cuisine, deep-fried dishes, some smaller courses and pancakes in a genuinely friendly Dutch atmosphere. The actual restaurant is quite simple, the walls are cluttered with Dutch curiosities. The location of the restaurant is fairly central, near Nordstan with its shopping and just a stone's throw from Ullevi, the arena where many events take place. The nearest tram stop is Centralstationen, for lines 1, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Babar & Restaurang

Dining area with mixed menu downstairs, bar upstairs
Kungsportsavenyn 29
Gothenburg 411 36
Sweden
+46 31 20 6087
Babar has a pleasant dining area with large windows overlooking Avenyn. The menu is mixed, with selections of vegetarian dishes, seafood and roasts. Both traditional dishes and modern ones are on offer. The dining room has a very different ambience from the bar; it has a sense of intimacy and cosiness. Upstairs, the bar sports a games area and large windows, also overlooking Avenyn. These make the bar seem larger than it actually is. Every day the bar offers a two—for—one deal on most drinks until 10pm, and on Sundays the offer is valid all night.

Bazar

Turkish cuisine
Haga Kyrkogata 14
Gothenburg 411 23
Sweden
+46 31 701 7143
Bazar has evolved from a tiny little student café to a pleasant, popular restaurant. The décor is red, with Turkish carpets and wall decorations. Bazar is right opposite the University's business college and close to the Institute of Social Sciences. Apart from the student population, the rest of Gothenburg has discovered Amanda and her Turkish delights. Choose between köfte (Turkish meatballs), Turkish pasta and salad, among other things. Apart from the usual brands of beer, the bar also serves Turkish raki. And every once in a while, there is entertainment in the form of Turkish belly dancing.

Bistro 1965

Gourmet food away from the city noise
Lasarettsgatan 5
Gothenburg 411 19
Sweden
+46 31 711 7290
Not a well-known restaurant in Gothenburg, Bistro 1965 nevertheless offers fine, modern Swedish cooking in a hip yet rustic environment. The guests are seated beneath a starry ceiling of lamps, and are able to look through the window into the kitchen, or out over Kungshöjd, a central part of Gothenburg untouched by the hustle and bustle of city life. The restaurant can be hard to find. The closest tram and bus stop is Grönsakstorget, but for those not familiar with Gothenburg, a taxi or explicit directions are recommended. The dishes are well prepared and on the expensive side, but on the other hand, the restaurant has received much praise. The chefs are young and adventurous.

Bommen

Neighbourhood restaurant in the centre of town
Torggatan 1
Gothenburg 41105

Bommen has a tried and tested, successful concept. Lunches are served on weekdays for those who work nearby, and a pub and à la carte menu are available in the evenings and on weekends for passers-by and regulars. The menu offers a selection of meat and fish dishes and there is also one vegetarian dish. There are no surprises in the starters and desserts either, this is purely ordinary food without any twists. The restaurant is nicely furnished, the marine details that characterise so many of the restaurants in Gothenburg are present even here. The nearest tram stop is Lilla Bommen, where tram 5 and several buses stop.

The Bookmaker bets its money on food, televised football and gambling, not necessarily in that order. The food is inexpensive, and the restaurant offers lunch on weekdays and a slightly larger selection in the evenings and on weekends. Fish and chips, burgers and other dishes are staple fare here. There are several different casinos and other games—blackjack, roulette and so on. There are also a few different food and drink offers on the Saturdays on which football games are televised. Brasserie Ferdinand

Restaurant with 132 different kinds of beer
Drottninggatan 41
Gothenburg 41107
Sweden
+46 31 710 1160
Brasserie Ferdinand is right in the centre of Gothenburg, under the large store NK. Ferdinand was voted Beer Restaurant of the Year in 1996, and beer probably is the main item of interest here. There are 132 different brands of beer, most of them bottled. But Brasserie Ferdinand also has a varied menu, with both meat and fish dishes. There is always a vegetarian main course and every weekday between 5p and 8p, they serve a Dinner of the Day for SEK58 (EUR6.44). There is also a bar menu with slightly cheaper dishes, such as seafood soup or chili with nachos and trimmings. For those interested in organising some fun for a group of people, there are beer-tasting nights which are only available by booking. These include the history of beer and the information on how beer is distilled, among other things. The nearest tram stop is Brunnsparken, where all trams stop.

Gothenburg 41136
Sweden
+46 31 10 5830
http://www.brasserielipp.com
Brasserie Lipp steals prospective customers from other, less centrally located restaurants. With some right, it is pertinent to add. The restaurant offers top-level food and a fine menu at rather high prices, but also a proximity to the city's pulsating nightlife. Not infrequently, many tourists' adventures in Gothenburg's nightlife start here, in the well-stocked bar. The usual starters and main courses are on the menu, as are a number of medium dishes, for those not hungry enough for a full meal. Between April and September the restaurant is also open on Sundays, between 11:30a and 1a. Nearest tram stop: Valand (trams 3, 4, 5, 6, 8).

The queues outside are long on weekend nights, and there is a definite risk of a loud and rowdy crowd. Every once in a while, there is a live cover band to entertain the bar guests. There are regular stand-up comedy evenings at Harrys in Gothenburg: more than one comedian has embarrassed him- or herself here. Jazzhuset offers live music almost every day of the week. Thursdays host Club Gump with a more youthful pop/rock clientele, but otherwise they cater to a more mature audience. On Fridays and Saturdays they attract the 40+ crowd with various genres (jazz, blues, rhythm & blues, rock), and also a nightclub with DJs before and after the live performances. Jazzhuset admits around 300 people.

This is a well designed, modern American restaurant right in the middle of the sunny side of the Avenue. Joe Farellis is one of the more popular restaurants in this area. The menu consists of the usual American dishes, such as burgers, pizza and fajitas. Curious diners can watch the chefs at work — the kitchen and dining area are only separated by a waist-high wall. The bar tends to fill up quickly, too. Many people drop in just for a drink and to enjoy the atmosphere.

Jojo Bar å Kök (Yo—yo bar and kitchen) is in Vasastan, an area well—known for its Asian restaurants. This restaurant is popular among the younger generation, partly for its modest prices but also for its happenings and its bar. Every Wednesday there's live soul music on stage, and on Tuesdays a stand—up comedian entertains the guests. Both nights have free admission. At the weekends there is often a bar DJ, and the music leans towards soul and hip—hop. And in the summer, the outdoor courtyard is often full. Many of Gothenburg's bars and restaurants offer After Work specials on Friday afternoons. At Jojo, this means cheap beer and a free Italian buffet.

Knossos is right in the centre of Linnégatan, and is a large, pleasant restaurant specialising in Greek cuisine. The terrace is large and quite crowded in the summer. There is also a large non-smoking area inside the restaurant. There are a variety of dishes to choose from. The prices are slightly higher than at the other Greek restaurants in Gothenburg, but this is also a larger restaurant. Between 5pm and 7pm every weekday they have After Work offers, which means you get a plate of souvlaki and a beer at a slightly lower price than usual.

Trendy lunches or a coffee after the movie
Västra hamngatan 20

Café Kosmos is a relatively new and trendy café. It may seem completely outdated in recent times, but the current clientele is young and hip. Gothenburg's two cinema complexes are situated nearby. And even if Kosmos is primarily a lunch café, the generous opening hours also make it suitable for a coffee after the film. The décor is sparse, but the colours are brighter than you might be used to in cafés decorated at the turn of the millennium. A mirror covers one wall of the spacious room. The sandwiches are quite expensive, but worth it. Trams 1, 2, 4, 7 or 9 will take you to Grönsakstorget.

Krakow promises genuine Polish food, and certainly delivers. Breaded cheese, pirogi and many other exotic dishes are specialties. It is recommended to have a local drink with your meal as well. Don't be fooled by the name, though; not everything on the menu is traditionally Polish. For example there are a few salad-based starters, and fish and chips appear also to be an until-now-unheard-of Polish culinary specialty. Trams 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 stop at Valand.

Exclusive restaurant in Linnéstan where the guests get to take the table home with them—if they pay for it. The restaurant is famous among the people of Gothenburg and it has figured in several books and been seen in a couple of movies as well. Right next door is the antique shop, which collaborates with the restaurant. It is possible to buy the furniture you are using. The food is expensive and top-notch, and the guests always come first. The clientele are a varied bunch, most of whom come for a drink and perhaps some food. In the daytime they can be tired shoppers dropping by for an afternoon beer; in the evenings anyone will show up. This is because Murveln is in the middle of Nordstan, by daylight a large shopping mall, but at night a shelter from the cold or a shortcut to the railway station. Venue

Southeast Asian restaurant with popular bar and nightclub
Viktoriagatan 3
Gothenburg 411 24
Sweden
+46 31 13 2000
Definitely the place for a party, but at the same time this place is cozy for diner too. The food is Southeast Asian, with a focus on Thai cuisine. The reason most people come here, however, is for the bar and nightclub. Venue strives for a cool nightclub feeling with two bars, a dance floor and a DJ. Friday is gay night, with the compulsory drag queens and cocktail specials. The guests take advantage of the dance floor every night—a few might find it too cramped. And the long queue outside bears witness to Venue's popularity.

Warehouse

American all the way
Götgatan 14-16
Box 11472
Gothenburg 40430
Sweden

http://www.warehouse.se
Warehouse has a 100 percent American concept, fitting as it is located in Nordstan, a shopping complex worthy of mall status. The food at Warehouse consists of Tex-Mex, BLTs, steaks, barbecued ribs and burgers, and plenty of them. For lunch, an all-you-can-eat buffet offers a selection of dishes from the normal menu and several different pan pizzas. The nearest tram stop is Brunnsparken, past which all lines go.

Ölhallen 7:an

Century old beer bar
Kungstorget 7
Gothenburg 41117
Sweden
+46 31 13 6079
Not your average club, Ölhallen 7:an is a beer bar whose claim to fame is it's traditional design and environment and not so much the beer. Nor is it known for the food, as none is served at this bar. Even at the ripe old age of 100, it still has enough steam and nostalgic charm to attract those under 25.
