Theatre in a northern suburb |
Tiörgatan 1 Gothenburg 424 65 Sweden +46 31 330 2960 |
Angered is a northern suburb of Gothenburg, with a dense immigrant population from a wide variety of countries. Here, you will find a thriving community theatre, which was under the auspices of Stadsteatern until the mid-1990s. The theatre lies between the high school and Blå Stället (a community centre with various leisure activities and a cinema), and is open Monday through Thursday. It is constructed as an amphitheatre with a gallery, and seats 200—250 people depending on the set construction. One of the main attractions is drama based on stories submitted by the locals, about Angered itself. These stories are emailed to the theatre under the heading Angered berättar (Angered Tales). Gothenburg's grand main street |
Kungsportsavenyn Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden |
Kungportsavenyn, or Avenyn as it is commonly known, is the big parade street in Gothenburg, which goes all the way from Kungportsplatsen up to Götaplatsen. Avenyn is packed with cafés, restaurants, pubs, nightclubs and shops. The City Library is located just below Götaplatsen. The small statue just outside is of the Swedish author Karin Boye (1900-1941). The walk is especially pleasant on a light summer's evening. There are several bus and tram stops along Avenyn; trams 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 take you to Valand. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bubbles nightclub caters to the 30+ crowd. There are comfortable sofas throughout, and on Saturdays they are always set with magnum bottles of champagne. You can book the sofas or even the whole nightclub for a larger crowd. Bubbles has room for about 300 guests, and is next-door to Brasserie Lipp on Avenyn. The best way to get here is on trams 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Valand. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Australian style and flavours |
Kristinelundsgatan 16 Gothenburg 411 37 Sweden +46 31 81 1812 http://www.dancindingo.se |
Genuine Australian bar and restaurant, owned by an Australian. Dancin' Dingo, in a basement not far from Avenyn, is most popular for the inexpensive beer. The queues outside are long on weekend nights, and there is a definite risk of a loud and rowdy crowd. Every once in a while, there is a live cover band to entertain the bar guests. The food is typically Australian, with large steaks and burgers with names like Bondi Beach Burger and Outback Sirloin Steak. The actual restaurant is quite cozy, with several different rooms and a simple décor. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The collections at the Gothenburg Museum of Art consists mainly of Nordic art from the 15th to 20th centuries, including paintings by Ivar Arsosenius and Krogh. There are also works by other European artists such as Manet, Monet and van Gogh. If you are interested in Swedish history, then the painting of King Karl XII's funeral procession is highly recommended. Packhuskajen Gothenburg 41113 Sweden +46 31 10 5950 http://www.goteborgsmaritimace... |
Göteborgs Maritima Centrum is the world's largest ship museum, but it is not as overwhelming as you might expect. It is, nonetheless, very interesting, and the most lively museum in Gothenburg. The museum holds 14 boats, among them a destroyer, a submarine, a towboat and a lighthouse ship. You can board them all; the submarine is particularly exciting with its narrow passages and small cabins. Admission is SEK60 (EUR7.08) Take tram 5 to Lilla Bommen to get here. Cultural spot in Gothenburg |
Götaplatsen Gothenburg 412 56 Sweden |
Götaplatsen was built in 1923 for the World Exhibition the same year. The large statue of the sea god Poseidon by Swedish artist Carl Mille was uncovered in 1931. There is an old superstition that states that if you are unmarried and take a photo of the statue, you will remain single. The Gothenburg Art Museum, Concert Hall and City Theatre are all located here. From the top of the stairs of the Art Museum, you have a great view of Kungportsavenyn. It is a perfect spot to enjoy a take—away coffee and just marvel at the view. There is a café and restaurant in the Art Museum in case you get hungry. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Picnic concert in the park |
Slottsskogen Gothenburg Sweden |
If the weather is good, conditions are ideal for a picnic on the large lawn in front of Björngårdsvillan in Slottsskogen while the Gothenburg Symphony orchestra play a mix of popular songs. Many people have caught on to this fact, and the orchstra's summer concert is probably the single concert that attracts the most people in Gothenburg. A part of the reason could be that it is free. To get here, take trams 1 or 2 to Linnéplatsen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gothenburg opera house |
Christina Nilssons Gata Gothenburg 411 04 Sweden +46 31 10 8080 http://www.opera.se |
This building lies by the harbour, near Lilla Bommen. The exterior is slightly chaotic and postmodern in appearance, but the interior is very elegant. The Opera House sports a main stage, a small stage, an elegant restaurant (with an excellent wine list and a menu separated into three acts), and various studios/workshops for everything from millinery and wig—making to leather, wallpaper and carpentry. High—tech methods coexist with ancient painting methods and historical sewing techniques. Göteborgsoperan has its own choir, as well as a ballet company that has received a lot of acclaim. Apart from ballets, the repertoire naturally includes operas, operettas and musicals. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This cinema is intimately connected to the society Folkets Bio (The People's Cinema, http://www.folketsbio.se) and their repertoire of imported films. The films are often less mainstream than what you would find in other cinemas. There is also a certain emphasis on events; Hagabion being a members—only cinema bases its activities on the initiatives and ideas of the members. These happenings include screenings of new documentaries as well as discussion nights and other events. The members run the screening themselves on a voluntary basis. The cinema is housed in a nineteenth—century building, Viktoriahuset in Olivedal, which used to be a school. There are three auditoriums, which seat 18, 42, and 146 people respectively. There is also a cafeteria to visit before, after or even during the films. It is also possible to hire an auditorium for conferences or other such events. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small square with notable statue |

Iron used to be an important export product, and it used to be weighed at Järntorget (the Iron Square), hence the name of this square. In the middle of the square, there's a statue of five female figures, symbolising the five continents. A few restaurants, shops, a community theatre (Folkteatern) and a community centre (Folkets Hus) are located around the square. Järntorget is about a 15—minute walk from the city centre. Theatre with variety shows and comedies |
Lorensbergsparken Gothenburg 412 53 Sweden +46 31 708 6200 http://www.lorensbergsteatern.se |
This is the elegant theatre by Lorensberg with four big white columns framing the palatial entrance. The theatre opened in 1916 with 'A Dream Play' by renowned Swedish dramatist August Strindberg. It was the most modern theatre in the country, with Sweden's first rotating stage and a lighting system that was so innovative for its time that the audience likened it to a revolution in light. In 1934, Lorensberg started showing films instead. The theatre company moved to Stadsteatern, where they stayed until 1987 when Lorensberg again became a playhouse. It was the comedy shows Galenskaparnaand After Shave that re—consecrated this as a theatrical venue, and since then there's been a steady stream of plays, shows and musicals here. The theatre lies slightly obscured behind the Main Library, but in a very central location close to Götaplatsen. For hours, repertoire and tickets, see their website. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gothenburg Sweden |
Why do many in Sweden call Gothenburg the "jolly west coast"? You might be able to see why in Majorna, a coastal area located to the west of the city centre. The area is known as an older residential district of Gothenburg, but lately has experienced growth due to the increase in the size of the city's working class, many of whom live here. Though much of the region is industrial or residential, a significant portion of this district has been converted into shops. One old industrial complex has been restored and turned into an art gallery. There are also several nice walking areas in the neighbourhood, with views of the Göta Älv, the river which divides the city into two halves as it discharges into the Kattegat river. Gothenburg's largest theatre |

Stadsteatern originally opened its doors at Lorensbergsteatern in 1918. In 1934, it moved to a new building on Gotaplatsen, and it is said that the features of this new theatre marked a breakthrough in theatrical innovation in Sweden. The 1930s architecture is evident in the characteristic stairwell, and there is a large rotating stage, which can be lowered in different sections. Workshops and studios were also constructed. Theatre in a classical building by Kungsparken |
Kungsparken 1 Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden +46 31 61 5055 http://www.stadsteatern.gotebo... |
This beautiful building was erected in 1859. It is reminiscent of a small palace and there is a feeling of glamour and golden days gone by in the crystal—adorned foyer as well as in the elegant auditorium, which has several balconies and boxes and a very decorative ceiling. The stage of Stora Teatern has seen all genres: cabaret, comedy, drama, opera, operetta — even Chinese puppet theatre. Between 1920 and 1994, when Göteborgsoperan was opened, it was the home of Göteborgs Musikteater (the Gothenburg Musical Theatre). There are 400 seats in the auditorium, inspired by the French Renaissance. The theatre is also used during the city's annual film festival. Because of the fire hazard, a non—smoking policy is enforced in the foyer. Stora Teatern is situated on Avenyn, in Kungsparken. At this time, Stadsteatern's company is housed there while their own theatre is being restored. For information about tickets and hours, please see their website. Review © 2007, Wcities |
