Gothenburg is a seaport. This was more obvious when the wharves were still operating, but the city still has the largest port in Sweden, receiving ships from near and far, and there are regular ferries going out to the archipelago. As a seaport located on the west coast, Gothenburg loves fish and seafood, something that is reflected in the number of seafood restaurants you will find here.

Global and Local

But Sweden's second-largest city also has a lot of other food to offer – you will find food and drinks from almost the entire world, if you only look closely enough. If there is one obvious starting point in Gothenburg, it is Götaplatsen at Avenyn - "the most Swedish of all Swedish places" as someone is reputed to have remarked – where The City Theatre, The Art Museum and The Concert Hall flank the statue of the god of the sea, Poseidon. But looking at Gothenburg from a culinary point of view, there are some places worth mentioning before we get to Avenyn…

Lorensberg:

If you start at Korsvägen, opposite Svenska Mässan, you will find a small Italian gem (with no pizzas!) called av La Cucina Italiana, and if you turn the corner to Södra Vägen you will find the exclusive restaurant Linnéa. Further down on the same street, where Berzeliigatan crosses Korsvägen, is the mysterious Restaurang ?, where Swedish fare is mixed with international food (Bosnian for example) and where you can watch the chefs in action. Yet a bit further down is another pasta restaurant, Pasta +. There are also a lot of cafés selling those apparently universally popular lunch baguettes.

Eating on Avenyn

If you return to Götaplatsen, with its view of the entire length of Avenyn, you will find an exclusive restaurant called Fond located next to The Art Museum. It has a big, rounded glass front facing towards Götaplatsen. Unless you want to miss one of the gems along this route, you have to make a detour to Arkivgatan, a short way down to the left after passing Restaurant/Brasserie Julien, to acquaint yourself with med Steak, the exclusive restaurant belonging to one of Sweden's top chefs, Leif Mannerström. The fare to pick here is one of the excellent meat dishes. A bit further away, at Götabergsgatan, you will find another gem, 28+. Just as the name implies they specialize in cheese, but that is not all they have on offer. Good food does not come cheap here, but you will definitely leave 28+ satisfied. If you return to Avenyn, you will come upon Babar, a cosy place with rustic exteriors and large windows on the second level, from which you have good view of Avenyn. Evas Paley, a bit of a classic in Gothenburg, is located in the same building.

If you cross Avenyn, you may enjoy a bit of atmosphere from "Down Under" at Dancin' Dingo on Kristinelundsgatan. From here, you can continue to Restaurang Räkan on Lorensbergsgatan, where you get your prawns delivered by remote-controlled fishing boat. They serve the prawn and crayfish stews that are so typical for the West Coast. Continue down the street and you end up at Harrys, a place for good (and occasionally inexpensive) food and entertainment by stand-up comedians. On the opposite side of the street, you will find Kometen, a hang-out for artists. Return to Avenyn once again and you will come upon Avenyn 10 (formerly Harley's) and further down is the venerable, French-inspired Brasserie Lipp with its large glass front and a nice outdoor section out front. They're also neighbours with the nightclub Bubbles. Not far from there, you will find English joviality and football (and some other sports) on the TV screens at The Rose and Crown. Across the street is Nivå, which is also very popular, both when it comes to eating and drinking and to nightlife.

If you want to make an evening of it, you may want to go to Nya Allén and Trädgår'n. They offer lots of great food and a very popular nightclub in a large modern building located next to the enclosed park Trädgårdsföreningen.

Chowing Down at Kungsportsplatsen

If you continue towards Kungsportsplatsen, you have to cross the bridge to find a place to eat. The first place you come to is Restaurant Berså, with a trendy atmosphere catering to the in-crowd. Around the corner, you will find some traditional restaurants offering choice fare, including some which specialise in seafood. If you turn yet another corner, you will find yourself at the pasta restaurant Pasta Fresca Aldardo, where you can eat your pasta standing at the counter, or take advantage of their take-out service. If you look out the window, you will see Saluhallen, an indoor market with not only a plethora of meat, vegetables, bread, fruit and spices, but also a number of restaurants which provide a good and fairly inexpensive alternative for lunch. Next to Saluhallen, there is a restaurant called Esther, a place where designers, PR-people and other city folk meet and mingle. If you cross the street, you arrive at Kungsportsplatsen, with its meeting place by the statue Kopparmärra and, a bit further down, you will see Gamle Port, a restaurant, pub and nightclub that has been around for ages and renews its popularity at regular intervals. They offer a good, solid lunch menu, and a bit more sophisticated fare for dinner. This whole neighborhood boasts many restaurants and a good variety of fare – Japanese, Spanish, Swedish, Chinese, Thai, etc.

On Södra Hamngatan there's another great place for sports fans. O'Learys has adopted the "standard American" concept. Dubliners, across the street, has a similar concept but the atmosphere here is more Irish/British than American. If you continue down Hamngatan you will eventually arrive at Brunnsparken, where you find the bar Palace, a real classic. Further down towards the harbour, there are a number of small places, like Bommen and the exotic Restaurang Simba, serving African and Caribbean cuisine. The opera house lies across the street, and they have a good restaurant as well.

Student Tastes at Vasastaden

If you are at the intersection of Avenyn and Vasagatan and walk up Vasagatan (which some people call "Campus Street" because of all the thousands of students that rush through Vasastaden every day searching for books, lectures or food) there are many places to discover. Cafés dominate the scene in this area, but there are quite a few restaurants as well. Most of these are situated on side streets like Victoriagatan, where you find, among other places, Klara, something of a classic on the Gothenburg pub scene, and Vasastaden, which has a good menu with a wide variety of dishes. There are a few places at Vasaplatsen, among them Smaka, which serves typical Swedish staple fare. Near Vasaplatsen, on Vasagatan, is Oji, which serves a mixture of "Scandinavian spartan functionalistic" and "Asian ascetic" food. Sushi is the main feature on the menu, but there are many interesting courses, both for lunch and for dinner. This is also a good place for watching "Campus Street", having large windows facing the street. Further down Vasagatan, near Handelshögskolan, you find Bazar, a place that has expanded from being a café to being a full-scale restaurant serving Turkish specialties. And, as mentioned earlier, there are many more places to discover on the side streets.

Cosy Haga

This district has a very distinct character, being full of small shops, cafés and having very little traffic – this makes it an oasis in the city. Haga is situated between Avenyn and Vasastaden on one side, and Järntorget and Linnéstaden on the other. This is a section of the city which has many nice, small places, like cosy Sjöbaren at Haga Nygata with its wonderfully atmospheric back yard area, and further down the same street you will find Hemma hos. You are now at the very heart of the Haga district, so take some time to absorb and enjoy the special atmosphere of Gothenburg's own Greenwich Village. At the back of the same block lies the vegetarian restaurant Solrosen, which is a favourite among students with their standard vegetarian menu. Their lasagna is very popular.

Linnégatan/Linnéstaden:

To the east, Haga ends at Järntorget and Linnégatan. Close to Järntorget, there are many so-called exotic restaurants, many of them Asian. This could be called Gothenburg's Soho, with a full range of prices and standards. The top of that range is represented by the expensive and critically acclaimed Le Village, for instance, where you can buy not only a meal but also furniture. Plantagegatan is home to the perfect place for both fish 'n' chips fans and whiskey connoisseurs - the well-known British restaurant Old Beefeater Inn. Further up, on Linnégatan, you will find Restaurang + housed in a classical yellow building from the turn of the last century with a great view of the street. If you follow Prinsgatan from here, you will come to Gothenburg's most famous pizzeria, the French (!) Bistro Cyrano. You may have to wait for a while at the bar before you get a table, but it is worth it when your meal arrives.

Linnégatan and Beyond

Along Linnégatan – which may be called Gothenburg's second city parade, and perhaps a bit more mature and cultivated than Avenyn – there is a multitude of restaurants. There is an almost infinite selection, and you are sure to find a favourite of your own. Knossos is a popular Greek restaurant with an outdoor section in the summer. Further up are Istället, well-known to most locals, and Bitter. The side streets also have their share of large and small, good and not so good, restaurants and small eateries. Hos Pelle at Djupedalsgatan has received awards both for the management's commitment to environmental preservation and for the exclusive menu (lots of fish and seafood). 12-52 at the corner of Majorsgatan/Linnégatan plays in the highest division when it comes to restaurants in Gothenburg, and Karlsons Garage is a rustic meeting point that has specialised in simple but hearty fare. Another small gem is the Greek Den Lilla Tavernan, located on Olivedalsgatan, up towards Slottsskogen. It is extremely popular, in spite of crowds and long waits for a table, and you will quickly understand why once you have tried it.

These are but highlights of the restaurant scene in Gothenburg, so there are still many major restaurants and bars which have not been mentioned in more detail. To truly do culinary Gothenburg justice, you would also need to visit Bryggeriet at Avenyn, Venue, Excet, Etc, all the restaurants in the area around Kungsgatan and up towards Kungshöjd, or those further away from the city centre - nice places with a lot of character and local colour. And we mustn't forget about Sjömagasinet with its star in Guide Rouge, or Fiskekrogen at Lilla Torget with its delicacies from the sea. They are all worth exploring. Try them all, at least once, if you are visiting this lovely maritime city by Kattegatt and Nordsjön.

12-52

Pleasant place with plenty of seafood
Linnégatan 52
Gothenburg 413 08
Sweden
+46 31 12 5211
12-52 is situated quite far up on Linnégatan, near Linnéplatsen. The restaurant is bright and inviting and the large terrace has a nice view of the often-crowded street. There is plenty of seafood on the menu; the starters especially being made with marine ingredients. But a selection of game is also available, including deer. The cheaper bistro menu offers a large variety of dishes. Lunch is served every weekday, as is usual in Sweden. There are two dishes, one that goes by the name of Swedish Tradition and one called Nytt o Lätt (New and Light), with fewer calories. There is also always a soup of the week. The nearest tram stop is Linnéplatsen, where lines 1 and 2 stop, but the walk from Järntorget isn't exceptionally long, and more trams stop there.

Take home the cheese
Götabergsgatan 28
Gothenburg 41134
Sweden
+46 31 20 2161
28+ is a gourmet restaurant and cheese shop located right in the center of town, a stone's throw from Götaplatsen. The food is expensive, but the restaurant is well known for its superior cooking. Seafood predominates, but one can order dishes like fillet of beef or duck liver. Of course, there is plenty of cheese. The name 28+ refers to the optimal storage temperature for this delicacy. The ambience is low-key and both the restaurant and shop are invitingly. Trams 4 and 5 stop at Berzeliigatan.

Avenyn Parade Street

Gothenburg's grand main street
Kungsportsavenyn
Gothenburg 411 36
Sweden
Kungportsavenyn, or Avenyn as it is commonly known, is the big parade street in Gothenburg, which goes all the way from Kungportsplatsen up to Götaplatsen. Avenyn is packed with cafés, restaurants, pubs, nightclubs and shops. The City Library is located just below Götaplatsen. The small statue just outside is of the Swedish author Karin Boye (1900-1941). The walk is especially pleasant on a light summer's evening. There are several bus and tram stops along Avenyn; trams 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 take you to Valand.

Babar & Restaurang

Dining area with mixed menu downstairs, bar upstairs
Kungsportsavenyn 29
Gothenburg 411 36
Sweden
+46 31 20 6087
Babar has a pleasant dining area with large windows overlooking Avenyn. The menu is mixed, with selections of vegetarian dishes, seafood and roasts. Both traditional dishes and modern ones are on offer. The dining room has a very different ambience from the bar; it has a sense of intimacy and cosiness. Upstairs, the bar sports a games area and large windows, also overlooking Avenyn. These make the bar seem larger than it actually is. Every day the bar offers a two—for—one deal on most drinks until 10pm, and on Sundays the offer is valid all night.

Bazar

Turkish cuisine
Haga Kyrkogata 14
Gothenburg 411 23
Sweden
+46 31 701 7143
Bazar has evolved from a tiny little student café to a pleasant, popular restaurant. The décor is red, with Turkish carpets and wall decorations. Bazar is right opposite the University's business college and close to the Institute of Social Sciences. Apart from the student population, the rest of Gothenburg has discovered Amanda and her Turkish delights. Choose between köfte (Turkish meatballs), Turkish pasta and salad, among other things. Apart from the usual brands of beer, the bar also serves Turkish raki. And every once in a while, there is entertainment in the form of Turkish belly dancing.

Bommen

Neighbourhood restaurant in the centre of town
Torggatan 1
Gothenburg 41105

Bommen has a tried and tested, successful concept. Lunches are served on weekdays for those who work nearby, and a pub and à la carte menu are available in the evenings and on weekends for passers-by and regulars. The menu offers a selection of meat and fish dishes and there is also one vegetarian dish. There are no surprises in the starters and desserts either, this is purely ordinary food without any twists. The restaurant is nicely furnished, the marine details that characterise so many of the restaurants in Gothenburg are present even here. The nearest tram stop is Lilla Bommen, where tram 5 and several buses stop.

Gothenburg 41136
Sweden

Brasserie Lipp steals prospective customers from other, less centrally located restaurants. With some right, it is pertinent to add. The restaurant offers top-level food and a fine menu at rather high prices, but also a proximity to the city's pulsating nightlife. Not infrequently, many tourists' adventures in Gothenburg's nightlife start here, in the well-stocked bar. The usual starters and main courses are on the menu, as are a number of medium dishes, for those not hungry enough for a full meal. Between April and September the restaurant is also open on Sundays, between 11:30a and 1a. Nearest tram stop: Valand (trams 3, 4, 5, 6, 8).

Cyrano is a top-class French pizzeria. The à la carte menu is small, but the pizzas are the main reason people come. There is a special pizza menu, which includes a starter and a dessert, for SEK125 (EUR14.75), but this offer only includes one kind of pizza. It's impossible to reserve a table, but those who are willing to wait can sit at the bar. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a small restaurant in Provence. Genuine Australian bar and restaurant, owned by an Australian. Dancin' Dingo, in a basement not far from Avenyn, is most popular for the inexpensive beer. The queues outside are long on weekend nights, and there is a definite risk of a loud and rowdy crowd. Every once in a while, there is a live cover band to entertain the bar guests. The food is typically Australian, with large steaks and burgers with names like Bondi Beach Burger and Outback Sirloin Steak. The actual restaurant is quite cozy, with several different rooms and a simple décor.

Cosy Greek restaurant with very low prices
Olivedalsgatan 17

Den Lilla Tavernan lives up to its name of "Little Tavern". This tiny restaurant positively exudes Greek tradition and camaraderie. But then it is hard to refrain from speaking to the person at the next table when you have to sit in their lap in order to reach your seat. The menu offers a wide range of typical Greek dishes. It is all very inexpensive and tasty but be prepared to wait. Lilla Tavernan is a very popular restaurant, and it can take a while to get served. It is also not possible to reserve tables in advance, the system here is first come, first serve. There is, however, a small bar in the entrance area where you can enjoy ouzo or a glass of wine while you wait to be seated. There is also a separate non-smoking area. The guests are entertained with live bouzouki music while they eat.

Götaplatsen was built in 1923 for the World Exhibition the same year. The large statue of the sea god Poseidon by Swedish artist Carl Mille was uncovered in 1931. The Gothenburg Art Museum, Concert Hall and City Theatre are all located here. From the top of the stairs of the Art Museum, you have a great view of Kungportsavenyn. High—tech methods coexist with ancient painting methods and historical sewing techniques. Göteborgsoperan has its own choir, as well as a ballet company that has received a lot of acclaim. The hall has 1286 seats, and the smaller Stenhammarsalen has 402 seats. This building, in Swedish functionalist style, also houses the Kontrabar, where food and drink can be enjoyed while sitting by the gigantic windows overlooking Gotaplatsen. Konserthuset has its own administrative staff, 107 musicians and its own symphony orchestra. There is something for everyone, including guided tours for children and youngsters.

Kopparmärra Statue

Copper statue of Karl XI
Kungsportsplatsen
Gothenburg 41110
Sweden
King Karl IX grounded the community that served as a predecessor to Gothenburg, Färjenäs at Eriksberg. A bronze-and-copper equestrian statue of the king stands at Kungportsplatsen. The statue Kopparmärra was made by Börjesson and the casting was done in Stockholm. The inscriptions on the statue's foot are from king Karl XI's commemorative notes to his court chaplain. The statue was inaugurated in 1904 by king Oscar II. The name means Copper Mare, the king's horse on the statue being a stallion, made of about 90% copper. Kungportsplatsen is not the original location of the statue; it used to stand on Östra Hamngatan and was seen from Avenyn. But the statue was in the way of the trams and had to be moved to Kungportsplatsen in the 1930s. Kopparmärra is a popular meeting point, because of its very central location at Kungportsplatsen.

La Cucina Italiana

Italian restaurant with no smoking
Skånegatan 33
Gothenburg 412 52
Sweden
+46 31 16 6307
One of the few places in Gothenburg where smoking is strictly prohibited. The owner, Pietro Fioriniello, prefers the guests not to use their mobile phones either—he has had a "no ringing" sign printed at the bottom of the menu. And on the stonewalls of the restaurant, he also exhibits his paintings. The food is typically Italian, with one exception—there is not a single pizza to be had. La Cucina Italiana is situated right opposite Svenska Mässan, where many exhibitions and conferences are held, and is very popular among the Gothenburg locals.

Le Village

Exclusive restaurant and antique shop
Tredje Långgatan 13
Gothenburg 413 03
Sweden
+46 31 24 2003
Exclusive restaurant in Linnéstan where the guests get to take the table home with them—if they pay for it. The restaurant is famous among the people of Gothenburg and it has figured in several books and been seen in a couple of movies as well. Right next door is the antique shop, which collaborates with the restaurant. It is possible to buy the furniture you are using. The food is expensive and top-notch, and the guests always come first. For example, they are allowed to keep their own private wines in the cellar, which anyway already contains several hundred bottles for diners to choose from.

The wine list is never-ending with a wide assortment at varying prices. The nearest tram stop is Berzeliigatan, where lines 4 and 5 stop. It is not a long walk from Avenyn and Valand, where many more trams stop.

Sports bar with 30 monitors

Gothenburg 411 10
Sweden

http://www.olearys.se
An American sports bar with 30 TVs and three giant screens, O'Learys attracts the true sports fans, offering also a typical American menu. The chain has branches in many Swedish towns but the one in Gothenburg was the first. The two-storey restaurant has several bars and even though the main attractions here are beer and sports, it is possible to have a really good meal. The large selection goes from Chicken Thai to chicken wings, covering everything in between. The décor is typical, with plenty of pictures, sports paraphernalia and red-and-white chequered tablecloths. The personnel is service-minded the American way, dropping by every few minutes to check that everything is satisfactory.

Old Beefeater Inn

Pub with varied menu
Plantagegatan 1
Gothenburg 41305
Sweden
+46 31 42 6092
Old Beefeater Inn is kept in a British style and offers many dishes (some of which are actually American). The little pub close to Järntorget is better known as a pub than as a restaurant. There are plenty of different beers, but the main area of interest and knowledge is in fact whiskey, preferably of the Scotch malt variety. There is an à la carte menu, and one with Beefeater specials, which include fish and chips, burgers and sandwiches. Unlike many other bars, Beefeater also has a list of bar snacks, with such things as fries with dips and sausage platters. The nearest tram stop is Järntorget, where lines 1, 3, 4 and 9 stop.

Central nightclub and restaurant in Brunnsparken
Södra hamngatan 2
Brunnsparken
Gothenburg 404 30
Sweden
+46 31 807 550
In the middle of Brunnsparken you will find Palace, a large, white and quite palatial building. It was built in 1751 and used to be the home of Pontus and Mathilda Fürstenberg, well known patrons of the arts who founded Valand's School of the Arts. In 1993, Palace was restored back to 1880s style. There are three floors. The ground floor houses the restaurant and nightclub as well as a casino. The first floor houses conference rooms and a restaurant, and the second floor has a banqueting room.

Pasta Plus

Large restaurant with plenty to choose from
Södra Vägen 2
Gothenburg 412 54
Sweden
+46 31 16 5600
http://www.pastaplus.com/
Typical pasta place with red-and-white chequered tablecloths and a variety of dishes to choose from. The bar is well stocked with, apart from wine and regular alcohol, a large selection of grappas. It is large, with room for many diners, but manages in spite of this to keep the atmosphere cozy. The glassed-in terrace is open all year round, which means you can sit out and eat in the middle of winter. The kitchen stays open a little longer than at the smaller restaurants in the same area. Pasta Plus is situated in the very centre of town, just a stone's throw from Avenyn and not very far from Svenska Mässan, where many exhibitions and conferences are held. The closest tram stop is Berzeliigatan (trams 4 and 5), but the walk from Avenyn is quite short.

Restaurang

International restaurant
Södra Vägen 20
Gothenburg 412 54
Sweden
+46 31 16 0345
Restaurang?, or Frågetecknet (Question Mark), as it is really called, offers a variety of dishes from many countries, some with a Swedish touch. There are also several pasta dishes, which are available as starters, in smaller portions. The menu is international: the Bosnian speciality cevapcici shares the menu with the Italian dessert tiramisù. The reason for the questionable name is mainly due to all the problems that delayed the opening of the restaurant. Many questions were left unanswered and hence the owners decided to name the restaurant after them.

Restaurang Café och Bar

Turn-of-the-century setting
Linnégatan 32
Gothenburg 41304
Sweden
+46 31 24 0890
This building is over a hundred years old and was decorated in a style typical of that period. The owners have striven to recreate this environment with hand-printed wallpaper, benches stuck to the walls, panels and mahogany furniture. The menu, however, is not outdated; in fact the restaurant strives to be innovative. It is a sister restaurant to the more exclusive 28+, but uses simpler ingredients and has lower prices. The large veranda is extremely popular in the summer. The view of Linnéstan is magnificent and the antique setting inside a perfect complement.

This is an English pub on Avenyn, serving a large variety of beers, both draught and bottled. It may all seem confusing to the uninitiated customer, but the staff is happy to assist anyone with problems in choosing. The food is typically English, with things like fish and chips and sandwiches on offer. The décor is very pub-like, and sports fans can follow the British football league from the TV screens in the bar. Quite frequently, there are live performers playing cover versions of Brit hits. The closest tram stop is Valan.

Simba

Crocodile and ostrich in a pleasant setting
Sankt Eriksgatan 3
Gothenburg 411 05
Sweden
This small Afro—Caribbean restaurant is imaginatively designed, with African—style statues, a bamboo fence and fake palm trees. The décor can strike guests as strange to start off with, but it is easy to get used to. The kitchen offers a variety of unusual delicacies, such as ostrich and crocodile. It mixes African with Creole and prepares unexpected combinations of ingredients. The restaurant's odd placement opposite the opera house makes it quite hard to find, but when you've actually arrived, the atmosphere is pleasant and cosy. The nearest tram stop is Lilla Bommen. Only tram number 5 stops here, but it is a short, brisk walk from Brunnsparken, where just about every tram and quite a few buses stop.

Sweden

Sjömagasinet has been awarded a star in the esteemed Guide Rouge, and the wine list sports a citation in Wine Spectator. Leif Mannerström is one of Sweden's top chefs and is a huge fan of traditional Swedish cooking, but seafood is the main attraction here. The view is magnificent, both at night and during the day. It is a bit of a trek to Klippan from the tram stop, so those with weak legs should definitely get a taxi.

Good, traditional dishes are served here for modest prices in a dark blue milieu. The design is simple yet impressive, as is the food. Smaka (Taste) has received many points from local food critics. The Swedish meatballs here are famous. The bar is very popular, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. There is an After Work hour on Fridays where guests are offered a free buffet and cheap beer and wine. It may get a bit rowdy, and perhaps crowded, but if all you want is a meal, you will not be disturbed if you arrive around nine. It seldom gets noisy before ten.

Solrosen

Vegetarian restaurant with a massive salad bar
Kaponjärgatan 4A
Gothenburg 413 02
Sweden
In the centre of the quaint district of Haga, you will find Solrosen (Sunflower), a restaurant that serves only vegetarian food. It is popular among students and the many cultural workers who work and live in the area. There is a large salad bar, with all sorts of things to choose from. The special of the day, which is only served at lunchtime in other restaurants, is available all day long here. The vegetarian lasagna is a favourite among students—it offers lots of good food for very little money. The restaurant is crowded and often full at lunchtime, but in the evenings it is a little easier to get a table.

Stadsteatern

Gothenburg's largest theatre
Götaplatsen
Gothenburg 411 36
Sweden

Stadsteatern originally opened its doors at Lorensbergsteatern in 1918. In 1934, it moved to a new building on Gotaplatsen, and it is said that the features of this new theatre marked a breakthrough in theatrical innovation in Sweden. The 1930s architecture is evident in the characteristic stairwell, and there is a large rotating stage, which can be lowered in different sections. Workshops and studios were also constructed. In the beginning of the 1970s, the municipality of Gothenburg assumed ownership of Stadsteatern, and since then the theatre has played classical as well as modern Swedish and international drama.

Exclusive restaurant catering to meat-lovers

Steak is yet another of highly esteemed restaurateur Leif Mannerström's favourite projects. In the beautiful yet humble restaurant, everything from grilled oysters to traditional Swedish cooking and other classics is available. Also on offer are meats from the grill, casseroles, cheeses and other desserts. The prices may be high but the restaurant is one of the most exclusive in Gothenburg.

Trädgår'n

Gothenburg 411 38
Sweden
+46 31 10 2080
http://www.tradgarn.se/
Trädgår'n (The Garden) is called Brädgår'n (The Lumber Yard) by those in Gothenburg who don't like the look of the place. And the large building does bear a strong resemblance to a pile of planks, but it is a very popular part of Gothenburg's nightlife. It is also one of the few nightclubs in town that stay open till 5a on Friday and Saturday nights. It is partly owned by the brothers Jonas and Anders Dahlbom, chefs well known both in Sweden and internationally. Therefore, the food is top-notch. The business lunch on weekdays is greatly appreciated by those working in the centre of town, as is having a bite before a concert. The nightclub and concert area easily fits 1300 people; the enormous room has a laser light system that people travel from far and wide to experience. The nightclub is open till 3a, but the restaurant closes earlier.
