Hamburgers on the way home |
Vasagatan 7 Gothenburg 411 24 Sweden +46 31 701 7725 |
People walking west after visiting late bars and clubs rarely manage to pass 7:ans without buying something for that early morning hunger. The hamburgers and milkshakes are great, and there are often special deals. If you run out of money at the bar, a Pommes with Mexidressing (a plate French fries with strong Mexican sauce) for SEK19 (EUR2.24) is recommended. To get here, take trams 2 or 3 to Vasa Viktoriagatan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Inexpensive local restaurant |
Herkulesgatan 3A Gothenburg 41701 Sweden +46 31 65 4095 |
The low ceiling of this place, and its wooden tables and benches establish a beer-hall atmosphere, and perhaps also the illusion that you are outdoors when actually indoors. The menu is simple, with plenty of meat, a little fish, a little pasta and a few smaller dishes. Drinks and ice creams are always included in the children's menu. Happy Hour takes place every day between 3p and 10p, when a large draught beer costs SEK25 (EUR2.95). Live music is played every Friday and Saturday. Ada's hardly belongs to the crème de la crème of Gothenburg's restaurant life, but offers inexpensive, good food and quick service for those undeterred by cluttered walls and a large, rowdy bar. The nearest tram stop is Hjalmar Brantingsplatsen, served by tramlines 2 and 5 and plenty of buses. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Inexpensive restaurant with plenty of gambling |
Nils Ericssonsgatan 23 Gothenburg 41103 Sweden +46 31 15 1045 |
The Bookmaker bets its money on food, televised football and gambling, not necessarily in that order. The food is inexpensive, and the restaurant offers lunch on weekdays and a slightly larger selection in the evenings and on weekends. Fish and chips, burgers and other dishes are staple fare here. There are several different casinos and other games—blackjack, roulette and so on. There are also a few different food and drink offers on the Saturdays on which football games are televised. The nearest tram stop is Centralstationen, where trams 1, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9 stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Early breakfast |
Linnégatan 57 Gothenburg 413 08 Sweden +46 31 24 9670 |
The main reason for visiting Coffee House is the breakfast they serve. You have four different menus to choose from. For example their porridge will keep you satisfied for a long time. Coffee House also opens earlier than many other cafés, so you can have breakfast out in the middle of the week, not only on weekends. The location on Linnégatan, close to Slottsskogen, also makes Coffee House suitable for a coffee stop on your Sunday stroll. Trams 1 and 2 go to Linnéplatsen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Crêpes, from a hole in the wall |
Linnegatan 32 Gothenburg 41308 Sweden |
It may be a slight exaggeration to call the area around Prinsgatan the French part of Gothenburg. But it does have a French restaurant, a cheese shop and a chocolaterie. And where it ends at Linnégatan, you will find Gothenburg's only crêperie. It opens pretty late and mainly caters to people coming home from work or people walking home at night. It has a wide selection of pancakes and the average price is around SEK35 (EUR4.13). To get here, take tram 1 to Prinsgatan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Australian style and flavours |
Kristinelundsgatan 16 Gothenburg 411 37 Sweden +46 31 81 1812 http://www.dancindingo.se |
Genuine Australian bar and restaurant, owned by an Australian. Dancin' Dingo, in a basement not far from Avenyn, is most popular for the inexpensive beer. The queues outside are long on weekend nights, and there is a definite risk of a loud and rowdy crowd. Every once in a while, there is a live cover band to entertain the bar guests. The food is typically Australian, with large steaks and burgers with names like Bondi Beach Burger and Outback Sirloin Steak. The actual restaurant is quite cozy, with several different rooms and a simple décor. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large café on Avenyn |
Kungsportsavenyn 39 Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden +46 31 16 3070 |
Evas Paley is perfectly situated halfway up Avenyn and with lots of space for the outdoor section. In the summer, this is a good place to sit and observe people walking by, and to be seen. Evas Paley is fully licensed and also serves lunches. But their coffee and cakes are a bit too expensive, especially as there are lots of cheaper places close by. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Obscure café downtown |
Kungstorget 10 Gothenburg 411 10 Sweden +46 31 711 1062 |
You can easily pass by Franks several times without noticing it is a café. Especially in the winter, in the summertime there are at least some chairs and tables on the pavement. But it would be unfortunate to miss it. The café is relaxed and serves continental eats, and consists of a long, narrow room. If you like to try different kinds of coffee, this is the right place, with a whole wall full of coffee jars. There is a taxi rank just outside. To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Kungsportsplatsen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Well-known central café |
Östra Larmgatan 14 Gothenburg 411 07 Sweden |
Most people in Gothenburg, young and old, know of Fröken Olsson. The place has been around for ages, but after being renovated, the classic café style has been exchanged for a modern but still personable design with mosaics and tiles. The cakes are good, especially the meringues. In the summer, you can also have a table in the secluded yard. Being situated between Kungsportsplatsen and the shopping centre Femmans Affärscentrum, Fröken Olsson is perfect for anyone out shopping. Get here on trams 1, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Kungsportsplatsen. Café with a young clientele close to Avenyn |
Vasagatan 40 Gothenburg 41137 Sweden +46 31 774 1925 |
Garbo is situated between Vasaplatsen and Avenyn. It is not a theme café, in spite of the name; the only connection to Greta Garbo is created by a few photos. The guests are young and the café can be noisy. On Sundays, it is laidback and lazy, however. Many cafés have good Sandwiches and in Garbo's case it is because of the bread. The fillings are quite ordinary, but the warm Baguettes themselves are fantastic. To get here, take trams 2, 3, 6, 7 or 8 to Vasaplatsen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Unbeatable view of the river |
Stigbergsliden 7 Gothenburg 41463 Sweden +46 31 24 8205 http://www.henriksberg.com |
Henriksberg is a very popular venue for arranging parties, as the amazing views from the roof terrace cannot be beaten by anything else in Gothenburg. The menu offers a lot of seafood. The restaurant is only open at night in the summer; in the winter only lunch is available. But the bar is open year-round. Certain nights are club nights; the DJs play anything from the latest techno to salsa, depending on what night it is. The nearest tram stop is Stigbergstorget, for lines 3, 4 and 9. Modern Italian-American restaurant and bar |
Kungsportsavenyn 12 Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden +46 31 10 5826 http://www.joefarelli.com |
This is a well designed, modern American restaurant right in the middle of the sunny side of the Avenue. Joe Farellis is one of the more popular restaurants in this area. The menu consists of the usual American dishes, such as burgers, pizza and fajitas. Curious diners can watch the chefs at work — the kitchen and dining area are only separated by a waist-high wall. The bar tends to fill up quickly, too. Many people drop in just for a drink and to enjoy the atmosphere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Local celebrity DJs |
Viktoriagatan 1 Gothenburg 411 25 Sweden |
Patrons wear black and have long, loud discussions. Tuesdays are reggae nights, on Wednesdays, local celebrities act as DJs. On weekends it tends to get loud here but the atmosphere is merry, not aggressive. The restaurant is the savior of many a poor student as it is possible to order large entrées at reasonable prices. The bouncers are some of the nicest in the city. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Trendy lunches or a coffee after the movie |
Västra hamngatan 20 Gothenburg 41117 Sweden |
Café Kosmos is a relatively new and trendy café. It may seem completely outdated in recent times, but the current clientele is young and hip. Gothenburg's two cinema complexes are situated nearby. And even if Kosmos is primarily a lunch café, the generous opening hours also make it suitable for a coffee after the film. The décor is sparse, but the colours are brighter than you might be used to in cafés decorated at the turn of the millennium. A mirror covers one wall of the spacious room. The sandwiches are quite expensive, but worth it. Trams 1, 2, 4, 7 or 9 will take you to Grönsakstorget. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bar with small menu |
Nordstan Box 11433 Gothenburg 404 29 Sweden +46 31 15 4044 |
Murveln is slang for "Journalist"; at one time this place may have been teeming with them, but it certainly is not today. The clientele are a varied bunch, most of whom come for a drink and perhaps some food. In the daytime they can be tired shoppers dropping by for an afternoon beer; in the evenings anyone will show up. This is because Murveln is in the middle of Nordstan, by daylight a large shopping mall, but at night a shelter from the cold or a shortcut to the railway station. Many come for the different casino and lottery games. Murveln offers cheap lunches, and a special of the week is available. The food is typically Swedish, while beer and spirits are the main items. Late hours on Vasagatan |
Vasagatan 11 Gothenburg 411 24 Sweden |
Napoleon has been around for a long time, but the décor attracts new customers to the café everyday. The building is quite different from the others on the street, being built in southern European style and boasting large murals. Napoleon probably has the most generous hours on Vasagatan. To get here, take trams 2 or 3 to Vasa Viktoriagatan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dance outdoors in the summer |
Hvidfeltsplatsen 6 Gothenburg 41120 Sweden http://nefertiti.se |
This might very well be the most interesting club in Gothenburg. The music includes live jazz, blues, rock and ethno, and a club scene that is one of the most popular in town. Food is also served. Many of the concerts include overseas acts, and lots of international jazz stars. For tickets and information, check the homepage or give a call. Tickets are to be picked up within half an hour after opening time. The easiest way to get here is on trams 1, 2, 4 or 7 to Grönsakstorget. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Party at crowded soul club |
Kungsportsavenyn 9 Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden +46 31 701 8090 |
Newly renovated, Nivå has a modern, fresh look. It gets loud and crowded on weekends, though the music is low until 11p. On Wednesday nights popular club Soul Train takes over, with DJs in costume. The kitchen offers ordinary Swedish dishes and pasta. Most come here for drinks and happy hour takes place on weekdays between 4p and 7p when beer costs real cheap and free snacks abound. Traditional Swedish food at reasonable prices |
Vasaplatsen 3 Gothenburg 411 24 Sweden +46 31 13 2247 http://www.smaka.se |
Good, traditional dishes are served here for modest prices in a dark blue milieu. The design is simple yet impressive, as is the food. Smaka (Taste) has received many points from local food critics. The Swedish meatballs here are famous. The bar is very popular, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. There is an After Work hour on Fridays where guests are offered a free buffet and cheap beer and wine. It may get a bit rowdy, and perhaps crowded, but if all you want is a meal, you will not be disturbed if you arrive around nine. It seldom gets noisy before ten. Review © 2007, Wcities |

24-hour café with cartoons for décor |
Engelbrektsgatan 22 Gothenburg 411 37 Sweden |
Close to the bars and clubs at Avenyn, Café Tintin is open all night, catering for cab drivers and anyone else who happens to be awake. The café is dedicated to the comic book character and decorated accordingly. The tabletops are made of glass and underneath them there are cut-out pages from Tintin magazines for you to read. As at all 24-hour cafés, the prices are somewhat high, but what else is there to do if you don't want to go home? To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 7 or 8 to Valand. Review © 2007, Wcities |

First-class restaurant, nightclub and concert venue |
Nya Allén Gothenburg 411 38 Sweden +46 31 10 2080 http://www.tradgarn.se/ |
Trädgår'n (The Garden) is called Brädgår'n (The Lumber Yard) by those in Gothenburg who don't like the look of the place. And the large building does bear a strong resemblance to a pile of planks, but it is a very popular part of Gothenburg's nightlife. It is also one of the few nightclubs in town that stay open till 5a on Friday and Saturday nights. It is partly owned by the brothers Jonas and Anders Dahlbom, chefs well known both in Sweden and internationally. Therefore, the food is top-notch. The business lunch on weekdays is greatly appreciated by those working in the centre of town, as is having a bite before a concert. The nightclub and concert area easily fits 1300 people; the enormous room has a laser light system that people travel from far and wide to experience. The nightclub is open till 3a, but the restaurant closes earlier. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large café with a young crowd |
Vallgatan 35 Gothenburg 411 16 Sweden +46 31 711 9070 |
Kafé Vallgatan was one of the first places in Gothenburg to combine a bar with a café. Now, others have adopted the same concept, but Vallgatan has split up the premises, and it is the section by Vallgatan that has kept the name. Nowadays, it is a large café with a young crowd and modern interiors. The service is good, with more staff than is usual at a café. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Southeast Asian restaurant with popular bar and nightclub |
Viktoriagatan 3 Gothenburg 411 24 Sweden +46 31 13 2000 |
Definitely the place for a party, but at the same time this place is cozy for diner too. The food is Southeast Asian, with a focus on Thai cuisine. The reason most people come here, however, is for the bar and nightclub. Venue strives for a cool nightclub feeling with two bars, a dance floor and a DJ. Friday is gay night, with the compulsory drag queens and cocktail specials. The guests take advantage of the dance floor every night—a few might find it too cramped. And the long queue outside bears witness to Venue's popularity. Review © 2007, Wcities |
