12-52 is situated quite far up on Linnégatan, near Linnéplatsen. The restaurant is bright and inviting and the large terrace has a nice view of the often-crowded street. There is plenty of seafood on the menu; the starters especially being made with marine ingredients. But a selection of game is also available, including deer. The cheaper bistro menu offers a large variety of dishes. Lunch is served every weekday, as is usual in Sweden. There are two dishes, one that goes by the name of Swedish Tradition and one called Nytt o Lätt (New and Light), with fewer calories. There is also always a soup of the week. The guests are seated beneath a starry ceiling of lamps, and are able to look through the window into the kitchen, or out over Kungshöjd, a central part of Gothenburg untouched by the hustle and bustle of city life. The restaurant can be hard to find. The closest tram and bus stop is Grönsakstorget, but for those not familiar with Gothenburg, a taxi or explicit directions are recommended. Brasserie Ferdinand is right in the centre of Gothenburg, under the large store NK. Ferdinand was voted Beer Restaurant of the Year in 1996, and beer probably is the main item of interest here. There are 132 different brands of beer, most of them bottled. But Brasserie Ferdinand also has a varied menu, with both meat and fish dishes. There is always a vegetarian main course and every weekday between 5p and 8p, they serve a Dinner of the Day for SEK58 (EUR6.44). There is also a bar menu with slightly cheaper dishes, such as seafood soup or chili with nachos and trimmings. For those interested in organising some fun for a group of people, there are beer-tasting nights which are only available by booking. Brasserie Lipp steals prospective customers from other, less centrally located restaurants. With some right, it is pertinent to add. The restaurant offers top-level food and a fine menu at rather high prices, but also a proximity to the city's pulsating nightlife. Not infrequently, many tourists' adventures in Gothenburg's nightlife start here, in the well-stocked bar. The usual starters and main courses are on the menu, as are a number of medium dishes, for those not hungry enough for a full meal. You can easily pass by Franks several times without noticing it is a café. Especially in the winter, in the summertime there are at least some chairs and tables on the pavement. The Notting Hill is an English pub situated about two minutes away from Jarntoget, a square near Haga. On Tuesdays and Sundays it plays host to a very popular pub quiz. In the middle of Brunnsparken you will find Palace, a large, white and quite palatial building. It was built in 1751 and used to be the home of Pontus and Mathilda Fürstenberg, well known patrons of the arts who founded Valand's School of the Arts. In 1993, Palace was restored back to 1880s style. There are three floors. The ground floor houses the restaurant and nightclub as well as a casino. Trädgår'n (The Garden) is called Brädgår'n (The Lumber Yard) by those in Gothenburg who don't like the look of the place. And the large building does bear a strong resemblance to a pile of planks, but it is a very popular part of Gothenburg's nightlife. It is also one of the few nightclubs in town that stay open till 5a on Friday and Saturday nights. It is partly owned by the brothers Jonas and Anders Dahlbom, chefs well known both in Sweden and internationally. Therefore, the food is top-notch. The business lunch on weekdays is greatly appreciated by those working in the centre of town, as is having a bite before a concert. The nightclub and concert area easily fits 1300 people; the enormous room has a laser light system that people travel from far and wide to experience. Valand is divided into a restaurant area and a nightclub area, with four bars, one rock bar and two dance floors where different DJs play a variety of music.
