Caféva

Soup café with a mixed clientele
Haga Nygata 5
Gothenburg 41301
Sweden
+46 31 711 6364
Haga Nygata is a pedestrian street lined with cafés. One of the nicer and most unpretentious is Caféva. The interiors are classic, with wooden panels halfway up the wall and paintings that are changed regularly. SEK42 (EUR4.96) will buy you a bowl of vegetarian soup (different recipes every day), a cheese sandwich and coffee or tea. The café has a mixed clientele including mothers, students and older ladies. To get here, take trams 1, 3, 4 or 9 to Järntorget.

Coffee House

Early breakfast
Linnégatan 57
Gothenburg 413 08
Sweden
+46 31 24 9670
The main reason for visiting Coffee House is the breakfast they serve. You have four different menus to choose from. For example their porridge will keep you satisfied for a long time. Coffee House also opens earlier than many other cafés, so you can have breakfast out in the middle of the week, not only on weekends. The location on Linnégatan, close to Slottsskogen, also makes Coffee House suitable for a coffee stop on your Sunday stroll. Trams 1 and 2 go to Linnéplatsen.

Hängmattan

Music and coffee
Karl Johansgatan 16
Gothenburg 414 59
Sweden
+46 31 12 5151
The name Hängmattan (Hammock), comes from the shape of the street outside, sloping upwards at both ends towards Stigbergstorget and Chapmans Torg. At this café you can get sandwiches for a fair price. If you are in luck, you can also get to see an exhibition or some live music. The rest of the building houses rehearsal halls and a stage. The visitors to the café are often rehearsing musicians. To get here, take trams 3, 4 or 9 to Stigbergstorget.

Muffins mm

Modern take-away with muffins
Avenyn 39
Bredvid Evas Paley
Gothenburg 41136
Sweden
+46 31 20 0052
http://www.muffinsmm.se
This is yet another place with a worn-out late-90s kind of name. But it doesn't matter, not too much at least, because the food was the best thing about the 90s. Here you can choose from fairly exotic dishes like stir-fried vegetable curries with basmati rice for SEK50 (EUR5.90), various salads, wraps and muffins. Everything is take-away. To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Valand.

Thee Earl of Sandwich

Simply a sandwich bar
Skanstorget 1
Gothenburg 411 22
Sweden
+46 31 130 3244
At Thee Earl of Sandwich you design your own sandwiches. You have a choice of bread and sandwich toppings. Everything is in English style, which makes the food a bit different from the Italian-inspired sandwiches at many other places. There are not many seats, so the café is more suitable for a take-away lunch than for a long coffee break. To get here, take tram 2 to Handelshögskolan.

Tintin

24-hour café with cartoons for décor
Engelbrektsgatan 22
Gothenburg 411 37
Sweden
Close to the bars and clubs at Avenyn, Café Tintin is open all night, catering for cab drivers and anyone else who happens to be awake. The café is dedicated to the comic book character and decorated accordingly. The tabletops are made of glass and underneath them there are cut-out pages from Tintin magazines for you to read. As at all 24-hour cafés, the prices are somewhat high, but what else is there to do if you don't want to go home? To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 7 or 8 to Valand.

Zenit

Large, varied breakfast menu
Allmänna vägen 11
Gothenburg 41460
Sweden
+46 31 14 5660
At the intersection of Danska vägen and Allmänna vägen you will find the oldest wooden house in Gothenburg, along with the heritage-listed buildings of Gatenhielmska reservatet and Zenit Kafé. Zenit is the place to go for breakfast. All day long, you can get trays filled with toast, olives, lettuce, mustard, juice, onions, marmalade and more. And they have a good selection of teas. The interior is simple and international, and the guests in some strange way all seem just to have came back from India or South America. Trams 3, 4 and 9 go to Stigbergstorget.
