Old ladies and good pastries |
Korsgatan 2 Gothenburg 411 16 Sweden +46 31 13 4893 |
Maybe it is the good cakes, or maybe it has to do with the café having been around since 1901. Whatever the case may be, Ahlströms Konditori is always full of old ladies sipping their coffee, and with a cake to go with it. But others, too, are attracted to the peaceful atmosphere. The décor is simple and classic, and the café is flanked by the busy Korsgatan on one side, and a peaceful arcade on the other side. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Café in Gothenburg's Botanical Gardens |
Carl Skottbergs gata 22 A Gothenburg 413 19 Sweden +46 31 41 0133 |
Especially in springtime, but also in summer or fall, the Botanical Gardens are a wondrous place to relax. Botaniska Paviljongen has a large outdoor section and is situated on a big lawn with some trees. If you are interested in botany, all the trees are labelled. Big windows give you a good view even from the inside. The café serves ice cream, cakes and small dishes. Various spices and herbs from the gardens are also for sale. Unfortunately the café is only open on weekends. To get here, take trams 1, 2 or 7 to Botaniska Trädgården. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic patisserie with elegant décor |
Västra Hamngatan 2 Gothenburg 411 17 Sweden +46 31 13 8713 |
You will find patisserie Brogyllen just by the channel running through the centre of Gothenburg. It is decorated in classic Central European café style, with mirrors, chandeliers and a high ceiling. This somewhat heavy style is contrasted by modern art. Traditional pastries and cakes are available for your enjoyment, along with your coffee. If you sit outside, you'll get a sweeping view of the historic Ostindiska huset and Tyska kyrkan, but it can be windy also. To get here, take trams 1, 2, 4, 7 or 9 to Domkyrkan. Soup café with a mixed clientele |
Haga Nygata 5 Gothenburg 41301 Sweden +46 31 711 6364 |
Haga Nygata is a pedestrian street lined with cafés. One of the nicer and most unpretentious is Caféva. The interiors are classic, with wooden panels halfway up the wall and paintings that are changed regularly. SEK42 (EUR4.96) will buy you a bowl of vegetarian soup (different recipes every day), a cheese sandwich and coffee or tea. The café has a mixed clientele including mothers, students and older ladies. To get here, take trams 1, 3, 4 or 9 to Järntorget. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Early breakfast |
Linnégatan 57 Gothenburg 413 08 Sweden +46 31 24 9670 |
The main reason for visiting Coffee House is the breakfast they serve. You have four different menus to choose from. For example their porridge will keep you satisfied for a long time. Coffee House also opens earlier than many other cafés, so you can have breakfast out in the middle of the week, not only on weekends. The location on Linnégatan, close to Slottsskogen, also makes Coffee House suitable for a coffee stop on your Sunday stroll. Trams 1 and 2 go to Linnéplatsen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For Italian cookies, sweets and espresso, Da Matteo is a one-stop shop. The perfect spot for a hot break on a cold winter's day; this cosy place is found nestled in the Viktoriapassagen alley. Rozzo Espresso and Caffe del Doge are two of the most popular brands of coffee served here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Home to Over 1600 Beers |
Kronhusgatan 2b Gothenburg Sweden +46 (0)31 13 60 70 |
The Delirium Café is home to over 1600 beers. Located behind Kronhusbodarna at the centre of the city, the interior is warm, friendly and always bustling with an eclectic mix of customers. The waitresses are bedecked in t-shirts and suspenders and the bar staff is friendly and very willing to help the customers select a beverage from the enormous beer list. Good food is also on the menu with a separate eating area in the back. There is a good selection of affordable drinks, but you will have to pay a premium for the more exclusive beers. Seating is at long shared tables or at more private four-seaters and there is the option of a very popular balcony area. This bar is a must-see for the seasoned drinker and a relaxing café for everyone else. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Italian delicacies |
Övre Husargatan 21 Gothenburg 413 14 Sweden +46 31 711 0247 |
The former premises of a fairly good teashop are now home to Delitalia. They serve coffee and tea, which you can enjoy whilst reading a newspaper. There is also a shop with delicacies, many of them Italian. Their specialities are fresh pasta, olive oil, tiramisù and balsamic vinegar. They also sell coffee beans and tea, and they can prepare a picnic basket for your afternoon in Slottsskogen or by the sea. Take tram 2 to Brunnsgatan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The hunting lodge of Queen Kristina |
Otterhällegatan 16 Gothenburg 41118 Sweden +46 31 13 3426 |
This is not much of a lodge, much less a hunting lodge, as it is situated in central Gothenburg. But it is one of Gothenburg's oldest buildings, and once upon a time the view must have been spectacular from the Otterhällan hill. Nowadays the building houses a café. It isn't easy to find, but it is definitely worth looking for. And if you begin to tire of the search, there are signs from Kungsgatan to lead you there. The facilities are available for dinners or conferences. Open by appointment only. Trams 1, 2, 4, 7 and 9 will take you to to Domkyrkan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Italian coffee around the heater |
Viktoriapassagen Södra Larmgatan 14 Gothenburg 411 16 Sweden +46 31 774 2881 |
Caffé Espresso serves one of the best cups of coffee in Gothenburg. Like many of its competitors, Espresso is also inspired by the coffee culture around the Mediterranean, specifically Italy. You can have your coffee as take-away, or standing inside. Or you can sit down around the heater on the patio. It is open in the winter, and warm enough even if it is snowing. Get here on trams 2, 3, 4, 7 or 9 to Domkyrkan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Café and furnishing store in closed-down cinema |
Götaplatsen 9 Gothenburg 411 34 Sweden +46 31 16 3558 |
By Götaplatsen, in the building that housed the now closed-down cinema Göta, you will find design store House. In the winter, you have to go through the shop to find the café. In the summer, there is a large open-air pavement area. The location is very good, with a view of Götaplatsen and the statue of Poseidon, the most central place in Gothenburg if the postcards are to be trusted. Around Götaplatsen, you also find the Arts Museum, the City Theatre, the Library and Gothenburg's Concert Hall. Further down on Avenyn, you find various shops, restaurants and bars. To get here, take trams 4 or 5 to Berzeliigatan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large café on Avenyn |
Kungsportsavenyn 39 Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden +46 31 16 3070 |
Evas Paley is perfectly situated halfway up Avenyn and with lots of space for the outdoor section. In the summer, this is a good place to sit and observe people walking by, and to be seen. Evas Paley is fully licensed and also serves lunches. But their coffee and cakes are a bit too expensive, especially as there are lots of cheaper places close by. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Café and courses in folk dancing |
Södra Allegatan 4 Gothenburg 41301 Sweden +46 31 701 7671 http://www.folkmusikkafeet.net |
In the summer, you can enojoy folk dancing in Slottsskogen, Gothenburg's large city park, but in the winter Folkmusikkaféet is probably the only place for it. The café offers folk music, coffee and folk dancing. It is also possible to take part on courses in folk dancing. The café is situated at the edge of Haga, quite close to the city centre. The ambience is calm and the guests are middle-aged and above. To get here, take trams 1, 3, 4 or 9 to Hagakyrkan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Obscure café downtown |
Kungstorget 10 Gothenburg 411 10 Sweden +46 31 711 1062 |
You can easily pass by Franks several times without noticing it is a café. Especially in the winter, in the summertime there are at least some chairs and tables on the pavement. But it would be unfortunate to miss it. The café is relaxed and serves continental eats, and consists of a long, narrow room. If you like to try different kinds of coffee, this is the right place, with a whole wall full of coffee jars. There is a taxi rank just outside. To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Kungsportsplatsen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Well-known central café |
Östra Larmgatan 14 Gothenburg 411 07 Sweden |
Most people in Gothenburg, young and old, know of Fröken Olsson. The place has been around for ages, but after being renovated, the classic café style has been exchanged for a modern but still personable design with mosaics and tiles. The cakes are good, especially the meringues. In the summer, you can also have a table in the secluded yard. Being situated between Kungsportsplatsen and the shopping centre Femmans Affärscentrum, Fröken Olsson is perfect for anyone out shopping. Get here on trams 1, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Kungsportsplatsen. Café with a young clientele close to Avenyn |
Vasagatan 40 Gothenburg 41137 Sweden +46 31 774 1925 |
Garbo is situated between Vasaplatsen and Avenyn. It is not a theme café, in spite of the name; the only connection to Greta Garbo is created by a few photos. The guests are young and the café can be noisy. On Sundays, it is laidback and lazy, however. Many cafés have good Sandwiches and in Garbo's case it is because of the bread. The fillings are quite ordinary, but the warm Baguettes themselves are fantastic. To get here, take trams 2, 3, 6, 7 or 8 to Vasaplatsen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large cinnamon buns in Haga |
Haga nygata 26 Gothenburg 41122 Sweden |
This is one of the nicest cafés on Haga Nygata. It was Husaren that first came up with the Haga bun—a very large cinnamon bun that was eventually adopted by most of the cafés in the area. The buns are not as cheap as they used to be, but they are still a good deal and they will keep you satisfied through most of the day. The guests on weekdays are mostly students and mothers with prams. On the weekends, shoppers with bags from the boutiques in the area fill the seats. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Music and coffee |
Karl Johansgatan 16 Gothenburg 414 59 Sweden +46 31 12 5151 |
The name Hängmattan (Hammock), comes from the shape of the street outside, sloping upwards at both ends towards Stigbergstorget and Chapmans Torg. At this café you can get sandwiches for a fair price. If you are in luck, you can also get to see an exhibition or some live music. The rest of the building houses rehearsal halls and a stage. The visitors to the café are often rehearsing musicians. To get here, take trams 3, 4 or 9 to Stigbergstorget. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Café in the centre of Haga |
Haga Nygata 10 Gothenburg 413 01 Sweden |
Haga used to be a run-down area. In the 80s it was partly torn down and partly renovated. The new neighbourhood has long given a picturesque but sterile impression, but it is starting to come into its own. One of the reasons for this is Jacobs Café, with its large outdoor section on the square halfway up Haga Nygata. In the wintertime, Jacobs is still a good café with a dark and cosy décor. To get here, take trams 1, 3, 4 or 9 to Hagakyrkan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic artist café on Avenyn |
Kungsportsavenyn 37 Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden +46 31 16 1751 |
Once upon a time, Junggrens (commonly called Jungans) was home to various artists and penniless actors from Gothenburg. Maybe there are still some around, but the chances are slim. Except on the walls of the café, where the old profiles are depicted. If you are interested, you can also read about them and their relations. Jungans is located on Avenyn, the most fashionable street in Gothenburg, and has outdoor seating. Their sandwiches are not too expensive, in spite of the posh location. To get here take trams 4 or 5 to Valand. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Modest patisserie |
Chapmans torg 3 Gothenburg 414 54 Sweden +46 31 14 5805 |
Supposedly during Lent, but actually the entire winter, semlor features on any café menu. A semla is a cream bun with almond paste, and one of the best places to have them is at Konditori Chapmans Torg. This place may not look much to the world, but its semlor are among the best in Gothenburg. You can also buy good bread here, and the usual pastries and cakes. The guests are mainly retired people living around the square. Trams 3 and 9 go to Chapmans torg. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The art café in Klippan |
Birthe Johansson Banehagsgata 15 Gothenburg 41451 Sweden |
The view of the harbour, the oil refineries on the opposite shore of Göta Älv, and the impressive height of nearby Älvsborgsbron probably make Konstkaféet at Klippan the most dramatically situated café in Gothenburg. But this is not the primary source of the café's fame, or the large ships that pass by outside the windows. Konstcaféet is renowned for the art that covers its walls. They are not always of the highest standard and is located a bit off the beaten path. A weekend visit, including a walk along the river is probably your best option. You can also take the ferry Älv-snabben to Klippan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Trendy lunches or a coffee after the movie |
Västra hamngatan 20 Gothenburg 41117 Sweden |
Café Kosmos is a relatively new and trendy café. It may seem completely outdated in recent times, but the current clientele is young and hip. Gothenburg's two cinema complexes are situated nearby. And even if Kosmos is primarily a lunch café, the generous opening hours also make it suitable for a coffee after the film. The décor is sparse, but the colours are brighter than you might be used to in cafés decorated at the turn of the millennium. A mirror covers one wall of the spacious room. The sandwiches are quite expensive, but worth it. Trams 1, 2, 4, 7 or 9 will take you to Grönsakstorget. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Café, cultural association and a tandem bicycle |
Storgatan 41 Gothenburg 41138 Sweden |
Krasnapolsky is not just a café or an exhibition hall for local artists, but also a meeting point for Gothenburg's Russian community. They are also home to the only hitchhikers' centre in Gothenburg. Krasnapolsky is more than that, it is a state of its own, namely The Cultural Association of The Free Republic. The 1950s décor is complemented with items gathered from numerous flea markets. Take a seat on a red plastic sofa or by the table with the fountain and catch up on a film with the movie club. Then order a Big Hot, a warm baguette with salad. The outdoor section is quiet in spite of being so close to Avenyn, since Storgatan hardly gets any traffic. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Seasonal restaurant overlooking the ocean |
Talattagatan 14 Gothenburg 42676 Sweden +46 31 29 1412 |
Långedrags Paviljong is both a restaurant and a café. It is located only 40 metres from the ocean and has plenty of marine tidbits on offer. The restaurant does a lot of catering, arranges weddings and conferences and can whip up a shrimp or seafood buffet for larger parties. The activities are very seasonal; the à la carte menu is only available in the summer and in the winter the restaurant shuts earlier. The café is also open all year round. The nearest tram stop is Långedrag, served by line 4. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Good coffee and standing room only |
Fredsgatan 2 Gothenburg 411 07 Sweden |
Mauritz Kaffe is one of the cafés in downtown Gothenburg to have specialised in good coffee. According to many people this is where you'll get the best cup in town. So head for Mauritz if it is the coffee you are after. True, you can get something to go with the coffee, but there are no seats. The interior is simple but attractive, and the staff can answer any and all questions about coffee. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Modern café below street-level |
Vasagatan 11 Gothenburg 411 24 Sweden +46 31 13 7003 |
Mondo was the first café on Vasagatan to have a 90s-style design. Others have followed, but Mondo still feels modern, even if it is not unique anymore (and it is no longer the 1990s!). They serve good pies and sandwiches for lunch, and the position below street-level isolates it from some of the traffic noise. Students dominate this area of the city. They also dominate Mondo at lunchtime. To get here, take tram 2 to Viktoriagatan or 1, 3, 4 or 9 to Hagakyrkan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Avenyn 39 Bredvid Evas Paley Gothenburg 41136 Sweden +46 31 20 0052 http://www.muffinsmm.se |
This is yet another place with a worn-out late-90s kind of name. But it doesn't matter, not too much at least, because the food was the best thing about the 90s. Here you can choose from fairly exotic dishes like stir-fried vegetable curries with basmati rice for SEK50 (EUR5.90), various salads, wraps and muffins. Everything is take-away. To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Valand. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Late hours on Vasagatan |
Vasagatan 11 Gothenburg 411 24 Sweden |
Napoleon has been around for a long time, but the décor attracts new customers to the café everyday. The building is quite different from the others on the street, being built in southern European style and boasting large murals. Napoleon probably has the most generous hours on Vasagatan. New and trendy downtown café |
Kyrkogatan 31 Gothenburg 41115 Sweden |
Bar Centro is originally a popular noodle restaurant at Vasagatan. Now the same owners have opened an espresso bar downtown. The place is small and bright, has a green glass counter and is probably the trendiest café in Gothenburg at the moment. In spite of that, it is quite nice with good coffee. There are also sandwiches for those who are hungry, but no hot meals. To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Kungsportsplatsen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Turn-of-the-century setting |
Linnégatan 32 Gothenburg 41304 Sweden +46 31 24 0890 |
This building is over a hundred years old and was decorated in a style typical of that period. The owners have striven to recreate this environment with hand-printed wallpaper, benches stuck to the walls, panels and mahogany furniture. The menu, however, is not outdated; in fact the restaurant strives to be innovative. It is a sister restaurant to the more exclusive 28+, but uses simpler ingredients and has lower prices. The large veranda is extremely popular in the summer. The view of Linnéstan is magnificent and the antique setting inside a perfect complement. Review © 2007, Wcities |

24-hour café with cartoons for décor |

The café is dedicated to the comic book character and decorated accordingly. The tabletops are made of glass and underneath them there are cut-out pages from Tintin magazines for you to read. As at all 24-hour cafés, the prices are somewhat high, but what else is there to do if you don't want to go home? To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 7 or 8 to Valand. Review © 2007, Wcities |
