Take home the cheese |
Götabergsgatan 28 Gothenburg 41134 Sweden +46 31 20 2161 |
28+ is a gourmet restaurant and cheese shop located right in the center of town, a stone's throw from Götaplatsen. The food is expensive, but the restaurant is well known for its superior cooking. Seafood predominates, but one can order dishes like fillet of beef or duck liver. Of course, there is plenty of cheese. The name 28+ refers to the optimal storage temperature for this delicacy. The ambience is low-key and both the restaurant and shop are invitingly. Trams 4 and 5 stop at Berzeliigatan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Grilled beef - you decides how |
Linnégatan 5 Gothenburg 41304 Sweden +46 31 775 0441 http://www.hereford-beef.com |
A Hereford Beefstouw specialises in grilled Hereford beef imported directly from Australia. The restaurant is part of a Danish chain. The restaurant provides the meat, the guest chooses how it is to be prepared and what will accompany the dish. The heavily laden salad buffet with many different vegetables and ingredients to choose from is good as a starter, and can be had as a meal in itself. The lunch menu is slightly cheaper. The décor is sturdy and solid, with wooden floors and stable oak tables. Since A Hereford Beefstouw is situated centrally, this is a popular place for business lunches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Inexpensive local restaurant |
Herkulesgatan 3A Gothenburg 41701 Sweden +46 31 65 4095 |
The low ceiling of this place, and its wooden tables and benches establish a beer-hall atmosphere, and perhaps also the illusion that you are outdoors when actually indoors. The menu is simple, with plenty of meat, a little fish, a little pasta and a few smaller dishes. Drinks and ice creams are always included in the children's menu. Happy Hour takes place every day between 3p and 10p, when a large draught beer costs SEK25 (EUR2.95). Live music is played every Friday and Saturday. Ada's hardly belongs to the crème de la crème of Gothenburg's restaurant life, but offers inexpensive, good food and quick service for those undeterred by cluttered walls and a large, rowdy bar. The nearest tram stop is Hjalmar Brantingsplatsen, served by tramlines 2 and 5 and plenty of buses. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Old ladies and good pastries |
Korsgatan 2 Gothenburg 411 16 Sweden +46 31 13 4893 |
Maybe it is the good cakes, or maybe it has to do with the café having been around since 1901. Whatever the case may be, Ahlströms Konditori is always full of old ladies sipping their coffee, and with a cake to go with it. But others, too, are attracted to the peaceful atmosphere. The décor is simple and classic, and the café is flanked by the busy Korsgatan on one side, and a peaceful arcade on the other side. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Alexandras Greek Soup Kitchen is commonly called The Greek. You can buy soup, pasta or Greek specialities over the counter. Nowhere else in central Gothenburg can you get a good bowl of soup for SEK25, and only in a few places pasta for SEK35. And if you are not satisfied they will gladly give you second helpings. After eating, take your time to walk around in the market hall among cheeses and other delicacies from all over the world. Get here on trams 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Kungsportsplatsen. Dutch genius near Ullevi |
Odinsgatan 19-21 Gothenburg 41103 Sweden +46 31 15 5709 |
This is something as unbelievable as a Dutch neighbourhood restaurant, located in between Ullevi and the train station. It offers traditional Dutch cuisine, deep-fried dishes, some smaller courses and pancakes in a genuinely friendly Dutch atmosphere. The actual restaurant is quite simple, the walls are cluttered with Dutch curiosities. The location of the restaurant is fairly central, near Nordstan with its shopping and just a stone's throw from Ullevi, the arena where many events take place. The nearest tram stop is Centralstationen, for lines 1, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Shopping-centre café on Avenyn |

Cafe Avanti lies on the second floor of the newly renovated shopping centre on Avenyn. Have a coffee or lunch here when you are worn out from shopping. A piece of homemade cake with coffee costs SEK30 and lasagne with salad and coffee is SEK40. You can also find stores for sporting gear, clothes, food and a lot of other things here. Get here on trams 4 or 5 to Valand. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dining area with mixed menu downstairs, bar upstairs |
Kungsportsavenyn 29 Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden +46 31 20 6087 |
Babar has a pleasant dining area with large windows overlooking Avenyn. The menu is mixed, with selections of vegetarian dishes, seafood and roasts. Both traditional dishes and modern ones are on offer. The dining room has a very different ambience from the bar; it has a sense of intimacy and cosiness. Upstairs, the bar sports a games area and large windows, also overlooking Avenyn. These make the bar seem larger than it actually is. Every day the bar offers a two—for—one deal on most drinks until 10pm, and on Sundays the offer is valid all night. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mixed Indonesian and Chinese cuisine |
Vasaplatsen 1 Gothenburg 411 26 Sweden +46 31 711 3833 http://home.swipnet.se/restaur... |
Bali looks like a typical Chinese restaurant, but is one up on the others: it also offers Indonesian food. Both large and small groups are easily seated in the restaurant's different rooms, and the menu has a wide range of dishes. Besides the (for Sweden) usual "three small dishes" there are many other Chinese and Indonesian meals to choose from. The terrace is popular in the summer as many students enjoy eating lunch here. Also, the beer is cheaper here than at many of the other places around Vasaplatsen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mongolian restaurant with large buffet |
Skeppsbroplatsen 1 Gothenburg 411 18 Sweden +46 31 13 6962 |
This place has daily buffets, and offers both business lunches and dinners. Besides the Mongolian dishes, Chinese is also available. There are ten kinds of vegetables, six kinds of meat dishes, four different sauces, and egg noodles and rice to choose from. You decide which meat, vegetables and sauce you want and give the food to the chef, who cooks it while you wait. The restaurant is large, seating up to 350 people. Bamboo is not really near any tram stops; the closest is Domkyrkan, but it does not take very long to walk from there. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Turkish cuisine |
Haga Kyrkogata 14 Gothenburg 411 23 Sweden +46 31 701 7143 |
Bazar has evolved from a tiny little student café to a pleasant, popular restaurant. The décor is red, with Turkish carpets and wall decorations. Bazar is right opposite the University's business college and close to the Institute of Social Sciences. Apart from the student population, the rest of Gothenburg has discovered Amanda and her Turkish delights. Choose between köfte (Turkish meatballs), Turkish pasta and salad, among other things. Apart from the usual brands of beer, the bar also serves Turkish raki. And every once in a while, there is entertainment in the form of Turkish belly dancing. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gourmet food away from the city noise |
Lasarettsgatan 5 Gothenburg 411 19 Sweden +46 31 711 7290 |
Not a well-known restaurant in Gothenburg, Bistro 1965 nevertheless offers fine, modern Swedish cooking in a hip yet rustic environment. The guests are seated beneath a starry ceiling of lamps, and are able to look through the window into the kitchen, or out over Kungshöjd, a central part of Gothenburg untouched by the hustle and bustle of city life. The restaurant can be hard to find. The closest tram and bus stop is Grönsakstorget, but for those not familiar with Gothenburg, a taxi or explicit directions are recommended. The dishes are well prepared and on the expensive side, but on the other hand, the restaurant has received much praise. The chefs are young and adventurous. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Neighbourhood restaurant in the centre of town |
Torggatan 1 Gothenburg 41105 Sweden +46 31 711 1606 |
Bommen has a tried and tested, successful concept. Lunches are served on weekdays for those who work nearby, and a pub and à la carte menu are available in the evenings and on weekends for passers-by and regulars. The menu offers a selection of meat and fish dishes and there is also one vegetarian dish. There are no surprises in the starters and desserts either, this is purely ordinary food without any twists. The restaurant is nicely furnished, the marine details that characterise so many of the restaurants in Gothenburg are present even here. The nearest tram stop is Lilla Bommen, where tram 5 and several buses stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Bookmaker bets its money on food, televised football and gambling, not necessarily in that order. The food is inexpensive, and the restaurant offers lunch on weekdays and a slightly larger selection in the evenings and on weekends. Fish and chips, burgers and other dishes are staple fare here. There are several different casinos and other games—blackjack, roulette and so on. There are also a few different food and drink offers on the Saturdays on which football games are televised. Restaurant with 132 different kinds of beer |
Drottninggatan 41 Gothenburg 41107 Sweden +46 31 710 1160 |
Brasserie Ferdinand is right in the centre of Gothenburg, under the large store NK. Ferdinand was voted Beer Restaurant of the Year in 1996, and beer probably is the main item of interest here. There are 132 different brands of beer, most of them bottled. But Brasserie Ferdinand also has a varied menu, with both meat and fish dishes. There is always a vegetarian main course and every weekday between 5p and 8p, they serve a Dinner of the Day for SEK58 (EUR6.44). There is also a bar menu with slightly cheaper dishes, such as seafood soup or chili with nachos and trimmings. For those interested in organising some fun for a group of people, there are beer-tasting nights which are only available by booking. These include the history of beer and the information on how beer is distilled, among other things. The nearest tram stop is Brunnsparken, where all trams stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Top class cuisine right on Avenyn |
Kungsportsavenyn 8 Gothenburg 41136 Sweden +46 31 10 5830 http://www.brasserielipp.com |
Brasserie Lipp steals prospective customers from other, less centrally located restaurants. With some right, it is pertinent to add. The restaurant offers top-level food and a fine menu at rather high prices, but also a proximity to the city's pulsating nightlife. Not infrequently, many tourists' adventures in Gothenburg's nightlife start here, in the well-stocked bar. The usual starters and main courses are on the menu, as are a number of medium dishes, for those not hungry enough for a full meal. Between April and September the restaurant is also open on Sundays, between 11:30a and 1a. Nearest tram stop: Valand (trams 3, 4, 5, 6, 8). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic patisserie with elegant décor |
Västra Hamngatan 2 Gothenburg 411 17 Sweden +46 31 13 8713 |
You will find patisserie Brogyllen just by the channel running through the centre of Gothenburg. It is decorated in classic Central European café style, with mirrors, chandeliers and a high ceiling. This somewhat heavy style is contrasted by modern art. Traditional pastries and cakes are available for your enjoyment, along with your coffee. If you sit outside, you'll get a sweeping view of the historic Ostindiska huset and Tyska kyrkan, but it can be windy also. To get here, take trams 1, 2, 4, 7 or 9 to Domkyrkan. It may be a slight exaggeration to call the area around Prinsgatan the French part of Gothenburg. But it does have a French restaurant, a cheese shop and a chocolaterie. And where it ends at Linnégatan, you will find Gothenburg's only crêperie. It opens pretty late and mainly caters to people coming home from work or people walking home at night. Genuine Australian bar and restaurant, owned by an Australian. Dancin' Dingo, in a basement not far from Avenyn, is most popular for the inexpensive beer. The queues outside are long on weekend nights, and there is a definite risk of a loud and rowdy crowd. Every once in a while, there is a live cover band to entertain the bar guests. Kronhusgatan 2b Gothenburg Sweden +46 (0)31 13 60 70 |
The Delirium Café is home to over 1600 beers. Located behind Kronhusbodarna at the centre of the city, the interior is warm, friendly and always bustling with an eclectic mix of customers. The waitresses are bedecked in t-shirts and suspenders and the bar staff is friendly and very willing to help the customers select a beverage from the enormous beer list. Good food is also on the menu with a separate eating area in the back. There is a good selection of affordable drinks, but you will have to pay a premium for the more exclusive beers. This is not much of a lodge, much less a hunting lodge, as it is situated in central Gothenburg. But it is one of Gothenburg's oldest buildings, and once upon a time the view must have been spectacular from the Otterhällan hill. Nowadays the building houses a café. It isn't easy to find, but it is definitely worth looking for. And if you begin to tire of the search, there are signs from Kungsgatan to lead you there. Feskekörka Gothenburg 41120 Sweden +46 31 13 9051 |
Gabriel fisk och skaldjursbar (Gabriel's Fish and Seafood Bar) is in Feskekörka, Gothenburg's "Fish Church". It is an indoor seafood market, so Gabriel's menu is no surprise. All that is on offer is seafood. Hot, cold, prepared, fresh - mussels, crabs, shrimp, lobster. You name it, they have it. The environment is unique: nowhere else can you enjoy your lunch to the guttural sounds of fish vendors with a Gothenburg dialect. And should you, against all odds, still want something marine after your meal you can always buy some fresh fish to take home. The nearest tram stop is Järntorget (tramlines 1, 3, 4 and 9), but it is a bit of a walk; you can also get a bus to Esperantoplatsen (buses 19, 64, 85, 86 and 114). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vasagatan 43 Box 5218 Gothenburg 40224 Sweden +46 31 81 2812 http://www.harrys.se/ |
There is a Harrys in seventeen different towns in Sweden. It is an established brand, and quite a successful one at that. There is not much to say about the food—it is of good quality but not special in any way. The pub offers a nice environment to eat in, but perhaps unsuitable for a romantic dinner. There are regular stand-up comedy evenings at Harrys in Gothenburg: more than one comedian has embarrassed him- or herself here. Happy Harry takes place every weekday between 4p and 7p, Saturdays between 1p and 7p, at which times you can find good offers on both food and drinks. The nearest tram stop is Valand, for tramlines 3, 4, 5, 6, 8. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exclusive, homely feeling |
Haga Nygata 12 Gothenburg 41301 Sweden +46 31 13 4090 |
Right in the middle of Haga, Hemma hos (the equivalent of Chez) has a nice view of the cobbled street and the passersby. Hemma hos emphasises a familiar yet exclusive atmosphere and has a selection of well made, tasty dishes. The décor is simple but at the same time very romantic. The food is better than oher restaurants in Haga generally offer, and therefore also more expensive; but there is also a bar menu with a number of dishes. Nearest tram stop: Hagakyrkan (lines 1, 3, 4 and 9). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large cinnamon buns in Haga |
Haga nygata 26 Gothenburg 41122 Sweden |
This is one of the nicest cafés on Haga Nygata. It was Husaren that first came up with the Haga bun—a very large cinnamon bun that was eventually adopted by most of the cafés in the area. The buns are not as cheap as they used to be, but they are still a good deal and they will keep you satisfied through most of the day. The guests on weekdays are mostly students and mothers with prams. On the weekends, shoppers with bags from the boutiques in the area fill the seats. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Café in the centre of Haga |
Haga Nygata 10 Gothenburg 413 01 Sweden |
Haga used to be a run-down area. In the 80s it was partly torn down and partly renovated. The new neighbourhood has long given a picturesque but sterile impression, but it is starting to come into its own. One of the reasons for this is Jacobs Café, with its large outdoor section on the square halfway up Haga Nygata. In the wintertime, Jacobs is still a good café with a dark and cosy décor. To get here, take trams 1, 3, 4 or 9 to Hagakyrkan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Modern Italian-American restaurant and bar |
Kungsportsavenyn 12 Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden +46 31 10 5826 http://www.joefarelli.com |
This is a well designed, modern American restaurant right in the middle of the sunny side of the Avenue. Joe Farellis is one of the more popular restaurants in this area. The menu consists of the usual American dishes, such as burgers, pizza and fajitas. Curious diners can watch the chefs at work — the kitchen and dining area are only separated by a waist-high wall. The bar tends to fill up quickly, too. Many people drop in just for a drink and to enjoy the atmosphere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cosy cellar with mixed menu |
Karl Gustavsgatan 7 Gothenburg 411 25 Sweden |
Jojo Bar å Kök (Yo—yo bar and kitchen) is in Vasastan, an area well—known for its Asian restaurants. This restaurant is popular among the younger generation, partly for its modest prices but also for its happenings and its bar. Every Wednesday there's live soul music on stage, and on Tuesdays a stand—up comedian entertains the guests. Both nights have free admission. At the weekends there is often a bar DJ, and the music leans towards soul and hip—hop. And in the summer, the outdoor courtyard is often full. Many of Gothenburg's bars and restaurants offer After Work specials on Friday afternoons. At Jojo, this means cheap beer and a free Italian buffet. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small traditional restaurant in the centre of town |
Hvitfeldtsgatan 8 Gothenburg 41120 Sweden +46 31 711 6669 |
Jonny På Hörnet (Johnny On The Corner) in Kungshöjd is a small, local restaurant that mostly serves lunch. The rooms are light, with light-green curtains and pale walls that create a definite at-home feeling. Being here is exactly like sitting in a friend's kitchen. The food is typical of a Swedish kvarterskrog (a small local restaurant): a few starters, some fish dishes and of course plenty of meat. The nearest tram stop is Grönsakstorget (on lines 1, 2, 4, 7 or 9), but anyone unfamiliar with the area should come equipped with a detailed map. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Once upon a time, Junggrens (commonly called Jungans) was home to various artists and penniless actors from Gothenburg. Maybe there are still some around, but the chances are slim. Except on the walls of the café, where the old profiles are depicted. If you are interested, you can also read about them and their relations. Jungans is located on Avenyn, the most fashionable street in Gothenburg, and has outdoor seating. Their sandwiches are not too expensive, in spite of the posh location. Knossos is right in the centre of Linnégatan, and is a large, pleasant restaurant specialising in Greek cuisine. The terrace is large and quite crowded in the summer. There is also a large non-smoking area inside the restaurant. There are a variety of dishes to choose from. The prices are slightly higher than at the other Greek restaurants in Gothenburg, but this is also a larger restaurant. Between 5pm and 7pm every weekday they have After Work offers, which means you get a plate of souvlaki and a beer at a slightly lower price than usual. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Trendy lunches or a coffee after the movie |
Västra hamngatan 20 Gothenburg 41117 Sweden |
Café Kosmos is a relatively new and trendy café. It may seem completely outdated in recent times, but the current clientele is young and hip. Gothenburg's two cinema complexes are situated nearby. And even if Kosmos is primarily a lunch café, the generous opening hours also make it suitable for a coffee after the film. The décor is sparse, but the colours are brighter than you might be used to in cafés decorated at the turn of the millennium. A mirror covers one wall of the spacious room. The sandwiches are quite expensive, but worth it. Trams 1, 2, 4, 7 or 9 will take you to Grönsakstorget. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Krakow promises genuine Polish food, and certainly delivers. Breaded cheese, pirogi and many other exotic dishes are specialties. It is recommended to have a local drink with your meal as well. Don't be fooled by the name, though; not everything on the menu is traditionally Polish. For example there are a few salad-based starters, and fish and chips appear also to be an until-now-unheard-of Polish culinary specialty. Trams 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 stop at Valand. Café, cultural association and a tandem bicycle |
Storgatan 41 Gothenburg 41138 Sweden |
Krasnapolsky is not just a café or an exhibition hall for local artists, but also a meeting point for Gothenburg's Russian community. They are also home to the only hitchhikers' centre in Gothenburg. Krasnapolsky is more than that, it is a state of its own, namely The Cultural Association of The Free Republic. The 1950s décor is complemented with items gathered from numerous flea markets. Take a seat on a red plastic sofa or by the table with the fountain and catch up on a film with the movie club. Then order a Big Hot, a warm baguette with salad. The outdoor section is quiet in spite of being so close to Avenyn, since Storgatan hardly gets any traffic. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Romantic basement restaurant |
Östra Larmgatan 20 Gothenburg 41107 Sweden +46 31 711 8540 |
Källarkrogen (Basement Restaurant) is in the middle of town and has been a restaurant for forty years. But the food-related activities have taken place in the building since the eighteenth century, when a butcher had his shop here. Typical for Gothenburg's restaurants is plenty of fish and seafood; this is true for Källarkrogen as well. Most of the starters are marine in nature, but there are plenty of meat dishes among the main courses. The restaurant is also open for lunch. It is very cosy, with low brick vaults and lots of candles. Definitely romantic. The nearest tram stop is Kungsportsplatsen, where lines 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Italian restaurant with no smoking |

One of the few places in Gothenburg where smoking is strictly prohibited. The owner, Pietro Fioriniello, prefers the guests not to use their mobile phones either—he has had a "no ringing" sign printed at the bottom of the menu. And on the stonewalls of the restaurant, he also exhibits his paintings. The food is typically Italian, with one exception—there is not a single pizza to be had. La Cucina Italiana is situated right opposite Svenska Mässan, where many exhibitions and conferences are held, and is very popular among the Gothenburg locals. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restaurant with high ambitions |

Lagom is a Swedish word that doesn't seem to exist in any other language. It means just right, or just enough, and has come to have almost negative connotations. But restaurant Lagom certainly strives to be more than just right: it is much better than that. The menu offers a selection of seafood dishes with a twist, but there are several salads, meat and pasta dishes for those who don't eat fish. The word lagom does suit the interior, though, which is quite commonplace. It is nothing flashy and the walls are not completely bare. Situated in Vasastan, along with quite a few other East Asian restaurants, this place is easy to miss for those new to town, but definitely one of Gothenburg's more popular Chinese restaurants. It is also a favourite among the critics. As is usual in Sweden, there is a special lunch menu with a few less expensive dishes. There is a rumour that those who know the owners well are served house specialties, dishes not on the menu. But for the uninitiated, there are still plenty of regular Chinese dishes to choose from. The menu is international: the Bosnian speciality cevapcici shares the menu with the Italian dessert tiramisù. The reason for the questionable name is mainly due to all the problems that delayed the opening of the restaurant. Many questions were left unanswered and hence the owners decided to name the restaurant after them. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Turn-of-the-century setting |
Linnégatan 32 Gothenburg 41304 Sweden +46 31 24 0890 |
This building is over a hundred years old and was decorated in a style typical of that period. The owners have striven to recreate this environment with hand-printed wallpaper, benches stuck to the walls, panels and mahogany furniture. The menu, however, is not outdated; in fact the restaurant strives to be innovative. It is a sister restaurant to the more exclusive 28+, but uses simpler ingredients and has lower prices. The large veranda is extremely popular in the summer. The view of Linnéstan is magnificent and the antique setting inside a perfect complement. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fish and chips and live music |
Kungsportsavenyn 6 Gothenburg 41136 Sweden +46 31 10 5827 / +46 31 10 5812 http://www.rosecrown.com |
This is an English pub on Avenyn, serving a large variety of beers, both draught and bottled. It may all seem confusing to the uninitiated customer, but the staff is happy to assist anyone with problems in choosing. The food is typically English, with things like fish and chips and sandwiches on offer. The décor is very pub-like, and sports fans can follow the British football league from the TV screens in the bar. Quite frequently, there are live performers playing cover versions of Brit hits. The closest tram stop is Valan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Café in beautifully tended park |
Trädgårdsföreningen 1 Gothenburg 40123 Sweden +46 31 802 970 |
If you want to experience nature while having your coffee, you have two main options in Gothenburg - Rosenkaféet and the café at the Botanical Gardens. Rosenkaféet is situated at Trädgårdsföreningen, the only fenced-in park in the city. The location is wonderful for coffee in the springtime, with lots of flowers and the park's rose garden close by. Or come here for a break on a warm summer's day. Unfortunately, the café is closed on weekdays. To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Kungsportsplatsen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Seafood in maritime setting |
Lorensbergsgatan 16 Gothenburg 41136 Sweden +46 31 16 9839 |
Restaurang Räkan (The Shrimp) is a seafood restaurant with its own ships and remote-controlled shrimp trawlers. The interior is colourful with flags and maritime details almost everywhere. The only thing on the menu is seafood, mostly shellfish. There are even shrimp and crayfish platters and a selection of three-course menus at varying prices. You can even choose from other main courses on the menu. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Experimental French |
Götabergsgatan 28A Gothenburg 41134 Sweden +46 31 18 1473 |
Rôtisserie Rodi is run by Frenchman Yves Rodi, who spends a lot of his time experimenting with high-quality foodstuffs. These experiments have resulted in a faithful group of regulars. The food is of course French, with prices to match. French and Swedish dishes are on the menu, but English translations are also available. The restaurant itself has a modern design with a bar in the middle and lots of open space. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Former steamship offering food and sauna |
Packhuskajen 8 Gothenburg 41113 Sweden +46 31 10 5965 |
S/S Marieholm is the last of the Swedish America Line's fleet still in Sweden, and still bears the shipping company's colours and chimney mark. Now, however, there is a large dining room, veranda bar, pool with sauna and conference room onboard. The restaurant is closed in the evenings during the winter months. But even if S/S Marieholm offers the daily lunches that are so common in Sweden all year round, it still has a few more expensive dishes on the side to choose from. The nearest tram stop is Lilla Bommen, served by tramline 5 and several buses. It is, however, not far from Brunnsparken, where most trams stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Crocodile and ostrich in a pleasant setting |
Sankt Eriksgatan 3 Gothenburg 411 05 Sweden |
This small Afro—Caribbean restaurant is imaginatively designed, with African—style statues, a bamboo fence and fake palm trees. The décor can strike guests as strange to start off with, but it is easy to get used to. The kitchen offers a variety of unusual delicacies, such as ostrich and crocodile. It mixes African with Creole and prepares unexpected combinations of ingredients. The restaurant's odd placement opposite the opera house makes it quite hard to find, but when you've actually arrived, the atmosphere is pleasant and cosy. The nearest tram stop is Lilla Bommen. Only tram number 5 stops here, but it is a short, brisk walk from Brunnsparken, where just about every tram and quite a few buses stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional Swedish food at reasonable prices |
Vasaplatsen 3 Gothenburg 411 24 Sweden +46 31 13 2247 http://www.smaka.se |
Good, traditional dishes are served here for modest prices in a dark blue milieu. The design is simple yet impressive, as is the food. Smaka (Taste) has received many points from local food critics. The Swedish meatballs here are famous. The bar is very popular, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. There is an After Work hour on Fridays where guests are offered a free buffet and cheap beer and wine. It may get a bit rowdy, and perhaps crowded, but if all you want is a meal, you will not be disturbed if you arrive around nine. It seldom gets noisy before ten. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vegetarian restaurant with a massive salad bar |
Kaponjärgatan 4A Gothenburg 413 02 Sweden |
In the centre of the quaint district of Haga, you will find Solrosen (Sunflower), a restaurant that serves only vegetarian food. It is popular among students and the many cultural workers who work and live in the area. There is a large salad bar, with all sorts of things to choose from. The special of the day, which is only served at lunchtime in other restaurants, is available all day long here. The vegetarian lasagna is a favourite among students—it offers lots of good food for very little money. The restaurant is crowded and often full at lunchtime, but in the evenings it is a little easier to get a table. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fitness café in area with gyms and bars |
Magasinsgatan 13 Gothenburg 41118 Sweden +46 31 711 5070 |
Soppdax is a lunch café that specialises in healthy food, soups and salads. It would also be a great breakfast café, if it only opened earlier than 11a. In the area there are also a lot of shops, bars and gyms. The interior is simple and clean and the room is well-lit despite being below street-level. To get here, take trams 1, 2, 4, 7 or 9 to Grönsakstorget. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Artists' hangout |
Berzeliigatan 12 Gothenburg 41253 Sweden |
Stage Door is the place where actors and musicians hang out (as you might guess from the name). Or at least the performing arts students—the restaurant is not very far from Artisten, the University of Gothenburg's artistic centre. The menu offers a variety of different dishes and specialities. From Mexican food and burgers to pasta and salads. The prices are very reasonable and the premises large, so it can get pretty loud as the evening progresses, but the atmosphere is jovial. The closest tram stop is Berzeliigatan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

American-style sports bar |
Järntorget 4 Gothenburg 413 04 Sweden +46 31 60 7260 |
Stars 'n' Bars is situated near Järntorget. Most people come to the restaurant to watch sports, or perhaps to enjoy the games corner. But a business lunch is served every weekday, and the menu on the whole is very American. Burgers, poppers, buffalo wings and tacos are some of the dishes on offer. In the evenings, there is a DJ on the second floor, and occasionally a band will play live music for the dinner guests. This American restaurant is owned by a man named English — who is from Ireland. Exclusive restaurant catering to meat-lovers |
Arkivgatan 7 Gothenburg 41134 Sweden |
Steak is yet another of highly esteemed restaurateur Leif Mannerström's favourite projects. In the beautiful yet humble restaurant, everything from grilled oysters to traditional Swedish cooking and other classics is available. Also on offer are meats from the grill, casseroles, cheeses and other desserts. The prices may be high but the restaurant is one of the most exclusive in Gothenburg. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sushi chain with limited but nice menu |
Drottninggatan 61 Gothenburg 411 07 Sweden +46 31 711 5960 |
The Sushi & Soda chain has four branches in Gothenburg. The idea here is to be able to deliver set sushi dishes quickly to hungry customers. Mostly it is used for take-away, but a few seats are available. The restaurant itself is pleasant and clean, designed in a Japanese style with light décor. Sushi & Soda also sports a display case with the fresh ingredients, as do all the other sushi restaurants in Gothenburg. There are three menus to choose from, the smallest being called San, the medium one Samurai and the largest one (15 pieces of sushi), Sumo. The three other Sushi & Sodas in Gothenburg share this one's menus and opening hours. Their addresses are Kristinelundsgatan 3, Drottninggatan 61 and Linnégatan 53. The nearest tram stop to this branch is Brunnsparken (all tram lines). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large Greek with pasta menu |
Lilla Nygatan 2 Gothenburg 411 09 Sweden +46 31 711 7262 |
This restaurant has changed names a couple of times, but its concept has mostly stayed the same. It is large, with an international menu. Currently the menu offers Greek food; there are many different dishes to choose from, especially meaty ones, but also fish and salads are on offer. There is a pasta menu with a number of cheaper dishes. The children's menu sports three inexpensive options. The location is perfect, in the middle of the shopping district and next-door to a cinema. It is a good place to bring a date if you are on a limited budget. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Many options and large buffets |
Odinsgatan 11 Gothenburg 411 03 Sweden +46 31 15 1210 |
Thai Orchid is a large Thai restaurant a little out of the centre. The Stampen area is first of all commercial, with several motorbike shops and other industrial businesses. There is a lot of housing in the area, however, and perhaps it is the inhabitants who are attracted to inexpensive oriental food. Besides over fifty main courses, this place offers salads, rice and noodle dishes and a few vegetarian alternatives. A selection of the dishes on the menu are available for take-away. Simply a sandwich bar |
Skanstorget 1 Gothenburg 411 22 Sweden +46 31 130 3244 |
At Thee Earl of Sandwich you design your own sandwiches. You have a choice of bread and sandwich toppings. Everything is in English style, which makes the food a bit different from the Italian-inspired sandwiches at many other places. There are not many seats, so the café is more suitable for a take-away lunch than for a long coffee break. To get here, take tram 2 to Handelshögskolan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restaurant and bar in Saluhallen |
Saluhallen 24 Gothenburg 41117 Sweden +46 31 711 5566 |
Till Salu, which means "For Sale", buys a lot of its raw materials in Saluhallen, the covered market right next door to this restaurant. This is evident on the menu. It includes a variety of meat dishes, grilled on lava stones; you decide which vegetables and what kind of potato you want to go with the meat. Brunch is served on weekends and includes everything from the more traditional bacon and eggs to chicken salad and heavy desserts. The weekends see a DJ behind the bar, playing hits from the 1980s and early 90s. Review © 2007, Wcities |

24-hour café with cartoons for décor |
Engelbrektsgatan 22 Gothenburg 411 37 Sweden |
Close to the bars and clubs at Avenyn, Café Tintin is open all night, catering for cab drivers and anyone else who happens to be awake. The café is dedicated to the comic book character and decorated accordingly. The tabletops are made of glass and underneath them there are cut-out pages from Tintin magazines for you to read. As at all 24-hour cafés, the prices are somewhat high, but what else is there to do if you don't want to go home? To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 7 or 8 to Valand. Review © 2007, Wcities |

First-class restaurant, nightclub and concert venue |
Nya Allén Gothenburg 411 38 Sweden +46 31 10 2080 http://www.tradgarn.se/ |
Trädgår'n (The Garden) is called Brädgår'n (The Lumber Yard) by those in Gothenburg who don't like the look of the place. And the large building does bear a strong resemblance to a pile of planks, but it is a very popular part of Gothenburg's nightlife. It is also one of the few nightclubs in town that stay open till 5a on Friday and Saturday nights. It is partly owned by the brothers Jonas and Anders Dahlbom, chefs well known both in Sweden and internationally. Therefore, the food is top-notch. The business lunch on weekdays is greatly appreciated by those working in the centre of town, as is having a bite before a concert. The nightclub and concert area easily fits 1300 people; the enormous room has a laser light system that people travel from far and wide to experience. The nightclub is open till 3a, but the restaurant closes earlier. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large café with a young crowd |
Vallgatan 35 Gothenburg 411 16 Sweden +46 31 711 9070 |
Kafé Vallgatan was one of the first places in Gothenburg to combine a bar with a café. Now, others have adopted the same concept, but Vallgatan has split up the premises, and it is the section by Vallgatan that has kept the name. Nowadays, it is a large café with a young crowd and modern interiors. The service is good, with more staff than is usual at a café. Review © 2007, Wcities |
