12-52

Pleasant place with plenty of seafood
Linnégatan 52
Gothenburg 413 08
Sweden
+46 31 12 5211
12-52 is situated quite far up on Linnégatan, near Linnéplatsen. The restaurant is bright and inviting and the large terrace has a nice view of the often-crowded street. There is plenty of seafood on the menu; the starters especially being made with marine ingredients. But a selection of game is also available, including deer. The cheaper bistro menu offers a large variety of dishes. Lunch is served every weekday, as is usual in Sweden. There are two dishes, one that goes by the name of Swedish Tradition and one called Nytt o Lätt (New and Light), with fewer calories. There is also always a soup of the week. The nearest tram stop is Linnéplatsen, where lines 1 and 2 stop, but the walk from Järntorget isn't exceptionally long, and more trams stop there.

Ada's

Inexpensive local restaurant
Herkulesgatan 3A
Gothenburg 41701
Sweden
+46 31 65 4095
The low ceiling of this place, and its wooden tables and benches establish a beer-hall atmosphere, and perhaps also the illusion that you are outdoors when actually indoors. The menu is simple, with plenty of meat, a little fish, a little pasta and a few smaller dishes. Drinks and ice creams are always included in the children's menu. Happy Hour takes place every day between 3p and 10p, when a large draught beer costs SEK25 (EUR2.95). Live music is played every Friday and Saturday. Ada's hardly belongs to the crème de la crème of Gothenburg's restaurant life, but offers inexpensive, good food and quick service for those undeterred by cluttered walls and a large, rowdy bar. The nearest tram stop is Hjalmar Brantingsplatsen, served by tramlines 2 and 5 and plenty of buses.

Babar & Restaurang

Dining area with mixed menu downstairs, bar upstairs
Kungsportsavenyn 29
Gothenburg 411 36
Sweden
+46 31 20 6087
Babar has a pleasant dining area with large windows overlooking Avenyn. The menu is mixed, with selections of vegetarian dishes, seafood and roasts. Both traditional dishes and modern ones are on offer. The dining room has a very different ambience from the bar; it has a sense of intimacy and cosiness. Upstairs, the bar sports a games area and large windows, also overlooking Avenyn. These make the bar seem larger than it actually is. Every day the bar offers a two—for—one deal on most drinks until 10pm, and on Sundays the offer is valid all night.

Bistro 1965

Gourmet food away from the city noise
Lasarettsgatan 5
Gothenburg 411 19
Sweden
+46 31 711 7290
Not a well-known restaurant in Gothenburg, Bistro 1965 nevertheless offers fine, modern Swedish cooking in a hip yet rustic environment. The guests are seated beneath a starry ceiling of lamps, and are able to look through the window into the kitchen, or out over Kungshöjd, a central part of Gothenburg untouched by the hustle and bustle of city life. The restaurant can be hard to find. The closest tram and bus stop is Grönsakstorget, but for those not familiar with Gothenburg, a taxi or explicit directions are recommended. The dishes are well prepared and on the expensive side, but on the other hand, the restaurant has received much praise. The chefs are young and adventurous.

Bommen

Neighbourhood restaurant in the centre of town
Torggatan 1
Gothenburg 41105
Sweden
+46 31 711 1606
Bommen has a tried and tested, successful concept. Lunches are served on weekdays for those who work nearby, and a pub and à la carte menu are available in the evenings and on weekends for passers-by and regulars. The menu offers a selection of meat and fish dishes and there is also one vegetarian dish. There are no surprises in the starters and desserts either, this is purely ordinary food without any twists. The restaurant is nicely furnished, the marine details that characterise so many of the restaurants in Gothenburg are present even here. The nearest tram stop is Lilla Bommen, where tram 5 and several buses stop.

Brasserie Ferdinand

Restaurant with 132 different kinds of beer
Drottninggatan 41
Gothenburg 41107
Sweden
+46 31 710 1160
Brasserie Ferdinand is right in the centre of Gothenburg, under the large store NK. Ferdinand was voted Beer Restaurant of the Year in 1996, and beer probably is the main item of interest here. There are 132 different brands of beer, most of them bottled. But Brasserie Ferdinand also has a varied menu, with both meat and fish dishes. There is always a vegetarian main course and every weekday between 5p and 8p, they serve a Dinner of the Day for SEK58 (EUR6.44). There is also a bar menu with slightly cheaper dishes, such as seafood soup or chili with nachos and trimmings. For those interested in organising some fun for a group of people, there are beer-tasting nights which are only available by booking. These include the history of beer and the information on how beer is distilled, among other things. The nearest tram stop is Brunnsparken, where all trams stop.

Brasserie Lipp

Top class cuisine right on Avenyn
Kungsportsavenyn 8
Gothenburg 41136
Sweden
+46 31 10 5830
http://www.brasserielipp.com
Brasserie Lipp steals prospective customers from other, less centrally located restaurants. With some right, it is pertinent to add. The restaurant offers top-level food and a fine menu at rather high prices, but also a proximity to the city's pulsating nightlife. Not infrequently, many tourists' adventures in Gothenburg's nightlife start here, in the well-stocked bar. The usual starters and main courses are on the menu, as are a number of medium dishes, for those not hungry enough for a full meal. Between April and September the restaurant is also open on Sundays, between 11:30a and 1a. Nearest tram stop: Valand (trams 3, 4, 5, 6, 8).

Fiskekrogen

Seafood restaurant with more than 300 wines
Lilla Torget 1
Gothenburg 411 18
Sweden
+46 31 10 1005
http://www.fiskekrogen.com
This is an exclusive seafood restaurant owned by Lars Ahlström and famous chef Ulf Wagner. The 300-year-old building has been home to not only one of Sweden's richest men, but also Gothenburg's first restaurant. There is a seafood bar where the guests choose their own platter. There are also plenty of other regular dishes. The décor is green and blue, just like the sea, which is exactly where the owners wish to take you.

Gabriel Fisk- och Skaldjursbar

Food in Gothenburg's most typical milieu
Feskekörka
Gothenburg 41120
Sweden
+46 31 13 9051
Gabriel fisk och skaldjursbar (Gabriel's Fish and Seafood Bar) is in Feskekörka, Gothenburg's "Fish Church". It is an indoor seafood market, so Gabriel's menu is no surprise. All that is on offer is seafood. Hot, cold, prepared, fresh - mussels, crabs, shrimp, lobster. You name it, they have it. The environment is unique: nowhere else can you enjoy your lunch to the guttural sounds of fish vendors with a Gothenburg dialect. And should you, against all odds, still want something marine after your meal you can always buy some fresh fish to take home. The nearest tram stop is Järntorget (tramlines 1, 3, 4 and 9), but it is a bit of a walk; you can also get a bus to Esperantoplatsen (buses 19, 64, 85, 86 and 114).

Harrys

Theme restaurant with stand-up comedy
Vasagatan 43
Box 5218
Gothenburg 40224
Sweden
+46 31 81 2812
http://www.harrys.se/
There is a Harrys in seventeen different towns in Sweden. It is an established brand, and quite a successful one at that. There is not much to say about the food—it is of good quality but not special in any way. The pub offers a nice environment to eat in, but perhaps unsuitable for a romantic dinner. There are regular stand-up comedy evenings at Harrys in Gothenburg: more than one comedian has embarrassed him- or herself here. Happy Harry takes place every weekday between 4p and 7p, Saturdays between 1p and 7p, at which times you can find good offers on both food and drinks. The nearest tram stop is Valand, for tramlines 3, 4, 5, 6, 8.

Hemma Hos

Exclusive, homely feeling
Haga Nygata 12
Gothenburg 41301
Sweden
+46 31 13 4090
Right in the middle of Haga, Hemma hos (the equivalent of Chez) has a nice view of the cobbled street and the passersby. Hemma hos emphasises a familiar yet exclusive atmosphere and has a selection of well made, tasty dishes. The décor is simple but at the same time very romantic. The food is better than oher restaurants in Haga generally offer, and therefore also more expensive; but there is also a bar menu with a number of dishes. Nearest tram stop: Hagakyrkan (lines 1, 3, 4 and 9).

Henriksberg is a very popular venue for arranging parties, as the amazing views from the roof terrace cannot be beaten by anything else in Gothenburg. The menu offers a lot of seafood. The restaurant is only open at night in the summer; in the winter only lunch is available. But the bar is open year-round. Certain nights are club nights; the DJs play anything from the latest techno to salsa, depending on what night it is. The nearest tram stop is Stigbergstorget, for lines 3, 4 and 9.

Hos Pelle

Exclusive and expensive with cheaper bar menu
Djupedalsgatan 2
Gothenburg 413 07
Sweden
+46 31 12 1031
Hos Pelle has been awarded an environmental diploma by the City of Gothenburg because of its eco friendly services. The food is modern and expensive and includes a lot of seafood, at least in the starters. There is also duck, several meat dishes and a vegetarian dish that varies according to the season. Hos Pelle is an exclusive restaurant with high standards, holding its own against the competition. There is also a cheaper bar menu for those who would like to sit in the bar area.

Jonny På Hörnet

Small traditional restaurant in the centre of town
Hvitfeldtsgatan 8
Gothenburg 41120
Sweden
+46 31 711 6669
Jonny På Hörnet (Johnny On The Corner) in Kungshöjd is a small, local restaurant that mostly serves lunch. The rooms are light, with light-green curtains and pale walls that create a definite at-home feeling. Being here is exactly like sitting in a friend's kitchen. The food is typical of a Swedish kvarterskrog (a small local restaurant): a few starters, some fish dishes and of course plenty of meat. The nearest tram stop is Grönsakstorget (on lines 1, 2, 4, 7 or 9), but anyone unfamiliar with the area should come equipped with a detailed map.

Jord (Earth) is great for seeing local bands, all shows are free. Jord plays on the elements: earth is vegetarian, fire is red meat and grilled foods, air is poultry and water is seafood. Choose from four menus and several main courses with one starter. If you prefer you can even mix them. The restaurant also presents free concerts thrice a week.

Klara

Local celebrity DJs
Viktoriagatan 1
Gothenburg 411 25
Sweden
Patrons wear black and have long, loud discussions. Tuesdays are reggae nights, on Wednesdays, local celebrities act as DJs. On weekends it tends to get loud here but the atmosphere is merry, not aggressive. The restaurant is the savior of many a poor student as it is possible to order large entrées at reasonable prices. The bouncers are some of the nicest in the city.

Established Gothenburg restaurant
Vasagatan 58
Gothenburg 41137
Sweden
+46 31 13 7988
Kometen has lived past its heyday. But its central location between the Avenue and Heden still makes it easy for people to find the restaurant. There are many different starters and several fish and meat dishes to choose from. And even if most of the à la carte dishes are available in children's portions, there is a children's menu. All kids are offered ice cream after their meal. The nearest tram stop is Valand, where trams 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 stop.

Källarkrogen

Romantic basement restaurant
Östra Larmgatan 20
Gothenburg 41107
Sweden
+46 31 711 8540
Källarkrogen (Basement Restaurant) is in the middle of town and has been a restaurant for forty years. But the food-related activities have taken place in the building since the eighteenth century, when a butcher had his shop here. Typical for Gothenburg's restaurants is plenty of fish and seafood; this is true for Källarkrogen as well. Most of the starters are marine in nature, but there are plenty of meat dishes among the main courses. The restaurant is also open for lunch. It is very cosy, with low brick vaults and lots of candles. Definitely romantic. The nearest tram stop is Kungsportsplatsen, where lines 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 stop.

Lagom

Restaurant with high ambitions
Aschebergsgatan 22
Gothenburg 41127
Sweden
+46 31 20 1595
Lagom is a Swedish word that doesn't seem to exist in any other language. It means just right, or just enough, and has come to have almost negative connotations. But restaurant Lagom certainly strives to be more than just right: it is much better than that. The menu offers a selection of seafood dishes with a twist, but there are several salads, meat and pasta dishes for those who don't eat fish. The word lagom does suit the interior, though, which is quite commonplace. It is nothing flashy and the walls are not completely bare. The nearest tram stop is Vasaplatsen, for lines 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8.

Le Baron, in spite of its name, is quite a pleasant, humble little restaurant offering both pizzas and an à la carte menu, among other things. The restaurant is right opposite Svenska Mässan, where many exhibitions and conferences are held. It is cosy but small, with brick walls and chequered tablecloths. The menu offers pizzas, several solid meat and fish dishes, and also some cheaper smaller ones and a number of pasta dishes of which one is vegetarian. There are several salads to choose from and a separate children's menu. The pizzas are available for takeaway. The daily lunches include a choice of the pizzas from the menu and also a traditional Swedish dish, which varies from day to day.

Södra vägen 32
Gothenburg 41254
Sweden
+46 31 16 1183
Linnéa is on Södra Vägen, not far from Götaplatsen, and is one of Gothenburg's finest restaurants. The dining area is divided into several different rooms and decorated in a modern yet simple style. There are several different menus to choose from, apart from the regular dishes. Set three-course meals in different price classes, are available, as well as special menus composed by the chefs using the ingredients of the day. The business dinner menu includes a starter, a main course, coffee and truffle. The daily lunch is expensive and exclusive but always includes the choice of a low calorie dish. The wine list is never-ending with a wide assortment at varying prices. The nearest tram stop is Berzeliigatan, where lines 4 and 5 stop. It is not a long walk from Avenyn and Valand, where many more trams stop.

Manfreds Brasserie

French/Italian restaurant in Linnéstan
Nordenskiöldsgatan 28
Gothenburg 41309
Sweden
+46 31 14 4553
http://www.manfreds.o.se/
Manfred's is a kind of exclusive pub/restaurant that specialises in the Mediterranean cuisine, something that fits the style of the Linnéstan area perfectly. The lunch specials always consist of solid, traditional Swedish cooking, though the evening menu is more elegant. The Sunday dinners tend to be more international. The décor is unpretentious, the atmosphere pleasant and the food relatively inexpensive. A tile stove in one of the corners of the restaurant increases Manfred's coziness. The nearest tram stops are Järntorget for lines 1, 3, 4 and 9, or Linnéplatsen (line 1 and 2).

Murveln

Bar with small menu
Nordstan

Gothenburg 404 29
Sweden
+46 31 15 4044
Murveln is slang for "Journalist"; at one time this place may have been teeming with them, but it certainly is not today. The clientele are a varied bunch, most of whom come for a drink and perhaps some food. In the daytime they can be tired shoppers dropping by for an afternoon beer; in the evenings anyone will show up. This is because Murveln is in the middle of Nordstan, by daylight a large shopping mall, but at night a shelter from the cold or a shortcut to the railway station. Many come for the different casino and lottery games. Murveln offers cheap lunches, and a special of the week is available. The food is typically Swedish, while beer and spirits are the main items.

In 1993, Palace was restored back to 1880s style. There are three floors. The ground floor houses the restaurant and nightclub as well as a casino. Restaurang

International restaurant
Södra Vägen 20
Gothenburg 412 54
Sweden
+46 31 16 0345
Restaurang?, or Frågetecknet (Question Mark), as it is really called, offers a variety of dishes from many countries, some with a Swedish touch. There are also several pasta dishes, which are available as starters, in smaller portions. The menu is international: the Bosnian speciality cevapcici shares the menu with the Italian dessert tiramisù. The reason for the questionable name is mainly due to all the problems that delayed the opening of the restaurant. Many questions were left unanswered and hence the owners decided to name the restaurant after them.

Restaurang Café och Bar

Turn-of-the-century setting
Linnégatan 32

Sweden
+46 31 24 0890
This building is over a hundred years old and was decorated in a style typical of that period. The owners have striven to recreate this environment with hand-printed wallpaper, benches stuck to the walls, panels and mahogany furniture. The menu, however, is not outdated; in fact the restaurant strives to be innovative. It is a sister restaurant to the more exclusive 28+, but uses simpler ingredients and has lower prices. The large veranda is extremely popular in the summer. The view of Linnéstan is magnificent and the antique setting inside a perfect complement.

Now, however, there is a large dining room, veranda bar, pool with sauna and conference room onboard. The restaurant is closed in the evenings during the winter months. But even if S/S Marieholm offers the daily lunches that are so common in Sweden all year round, it still has a few more expensive dishes on the side to choose from. Tegel Matsal & Balkong means "Brick Dining Room and Balcony", which is exactly what this is! Its odd interiors with its brick walls, pillars and large windows creates a feeling of eating outdoors. Trädgår'n (The Garden) is called Brädgår'n (The Lumber Yard) by those in Gothenburg who don't like the look of the place. And the large building does bear a strong resemblance to a pile of planks, but it is a very popular part of Gothenburg's nightlife. It is also one of the few nightclubs in town that stay open till 5a on Friday and Saturday nights. It is partly owned by the brothers Jonas and Anders Dahlbom, chefs well known both in Sweden and internationally. Therefore, the food is top-notch. The business lunch on weekdays is greatly appreciated by those working in the centre of town, as is having a bite before a concert. The nightclub and concert area easily fits 1300 people; the enormous room has a laser light system that people travel from far and wide to experience. The nightclub is open till 3a, but the restaurant closes earlier.
