Pleasant place with plenty of seafood |
Linnégatan 52 Gothenburg 413 08 Sweden +46 31 12 5211 |
12-52 is situated quite far up on Linnégatan, near Linnéplatsen. The restaurant is bright and inviting and the large terrace has a nice view of the often-crowded street. There is plenty of seafood on the menu; the starters especially being made with marine ingredients. But a selection of game is also available, including deer. The cheaper bistro menu offers a large variety of dishes. Lunch is served every weekday, as is usual in Sweden. There are two dishes, one that goes by the name of Swedish Tradition and one called Nytt o Lätt (New and Light), with fewer calories. There is also always a soup of the week. The nearest tram stop is Linnéplatsen, where lines 1 and 2 stop, but the walk from Järntorget isn't exceptionally long, and more trams stop there. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Take home the cheese |
Götabergsgatan 28 Gothenburg 41134 Sweden +46 31 20 2161 |
28+ is a gourmet restaurant and cheese shop located right in the center of town, a stone's throw from Götaplatsen. The food is expensive, but the restaurant is well known for its superior cooking. Seafood predominates, but one can order dishes like fillet of beef or duck liver. Of course, there is plenty of cheese. The name 28+ refers to the optimal storage temperature for this delicacy. The ambience is low-key and both the restaurant and shop are invitingly. Trams 4 and 5 stop at Berzeliigatan. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dining area with mixed menu downstairs, bar upstairs |
Kungsportsavenyn 29 Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden +46 31 20 6087 |
Babar has a pleasant dining area with large windows overlooking Avenyn. The menu is mixed, with selections of vegetarian dishes, seafood and roasts. Both traditional dishes and modern ones are on offer. The dining room has a very different ambience from the bar; it has a sense of intimacy and cosiness. Upstairs, the bar sports a games area and large windows, also overlooking Avenyn. These make the bar seem larger than it actually is. Every day the bar offers a two—for—one deal on most drinks until 10pm, and on Sundays the offer is valid all night. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restaurant with 132 different kinds of beer |
Drottninggatan 41 Gothenburg 41107 Sweden +46 31 710 1160 |
Brasserie Ferdinand is right in the centre of Gothenburg, under the large store NK. Ferdinand was voted Beer Restaurant of the Year in 1996, and beer probably is the main item of interest here. There are 132 different brands of beer, most of them bottled. But Brasserie Ferdinand also has a varied menu, with both meat and fish dishes. There is always a vegetarian main course and every weekday between 5p and 8p, they serve a Dinner of the Day for SEK58 (EUR6.44). There is also a bar menu with slightly cheaper dishes, such as seafood soup or chili with nachos and trimmings. For those interested in organising some fun for a group of people, there are beer-tasting nights which are only available by booking. These include the history of beer and the information on how beer is distilled, among other things. The nearest tram stop is Brunnsparken, where all trams stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Top class cuisine right on Avenyn |
Kungsportsavenyn 8 Gothenburg 41136 Sweden +46 31 10 5830 http://www.brasserielipp.com |
Brasserie Lipp steals prospective customers from other, less centrally located restaurants. With some right, it is pertinent to add. The restaurant offers top-level food and a fine menu at rather high prices, but also a proximity to the city's pulsating nightlife. Not infrequently, many tourists' adventures in Gothenburg's nightlife start here, in the well-stocked bar. The usual starters and main courses are on the menu, as are a number of medium dishes, for those not hungry enough for a full meal. Between April and September the restaurant is also open on Sundays, between 11:30a and 1a. Nearest tram stop: Valand (trams 3, 4, 5, 6, 8). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small place with a large menu |
Karl Johansgatan 58 Gothenburg 41455 Sweden +46 31 42 2530 http://www.restbryggan.com |
Bryggan is in Majorna and caters mainly to the local residents. Yet it is a cosy little place, with many different dishes to choose from. There is some vegetarian food, and even a few meat and fish dishes. Most of the menu is made up of pizzas and pasta dishes. There are also a few kebab plates, as well as salads and desserts. The restaurant is small, dominated by a large mural of the ocean. Bryggan means The Jetty. The nearest tram stop is Chapmans torg, where lines 3 and 9 stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fish and seafood market with restaurant |
Fisktorget Gothenburg 411 20 Sweden +46 31 711 3509 http://www.fiskekyrkan.nu |
Feskekörka the "Fish Church" is a market hall for seafood built in 1874. The building is reminiscent of a church, hence the name. Fresh fish is slightly more expensive here than average, but the quality and the atmosphere make it worth it. Feskekörka is located by the Rosenlund canal and is within walking distance of Brunnsparken. Or take trams 1, 2, 3, 4 or 9 to Grönsakstorget, which is only a few minutes' walk away. There is also a restaurant in Feskekörka. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Seafood restaurant with more than 300 wines |
Lilla Torget 1 Gothenburg 411 18 Sweden +46 31 10 1005 http://www.fiskekrogen.com |
This is an exclusive seafood restaurant owned by Lars Ahlström and famous chef Ulf Wagner. The 300-year-old building has been home to not only one of Sweden's richest men, but also Gothenburg's first restaurant. There is a seafood bar where the guests choose their own platter. There are also plenty of other regular dishes. The décor is green and blue, just like the sea, which is exactly where the owners wish to take you. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Food in Gothenburg's most typical milieu |
Feskekörka Gothenburg 41120 Sweden +46 31 13 9051 |
Gabriel fisk och skaldjursbar (Gabriel's Fish and Seafood Bar) is in Feskekörka, Gothenburg's "Fish Church". It is an indoor seafood market, so Gabriel's menu is no surprise. All that is on offer is seafood. Hot, cold, prepared, fresh - mussels, crabs, shrimp, lobster. You name it, they have it. The environment is unique: nowhere else can you enjoy your lunch to the guttural sounds of fish vendors with a Gothenburg dialect. And should you, against all odds, still want something marine after your meal you can always buy some fresh fish to take home. The nearest tram stop is Järntorget (tramlines 1, 3, 4 and 9), but it is a bit of a walk; you can also get a bus to Esperantoplatsen (buses 19, 64, 85, 86 and 114). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Amazing amounts of garlic |
Andra Långgatan 35 Gothenburg 413 03 Sweden +46 31 14 1512 |
Those not fond of garlic should stay well away from this restaurant, because every dish has garlic in it. Even the ice cream. If you are interested in a cocktail before your meal, try a Garlictini. Or why not round off your meal with a garlic shot? Of course, there are normal drinks as well. The restaurant has a selection of fish, meat and poultry dishes, and some are available without garlic. But even the décor consists of many decorations made with this ingredient. Helpful health tips are also written on the walls. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Theme restaurant with stand-up comedy |
Vasagatan 43 Box 5218 Gothenburg 40224 Sweden +46 31 81 2812 http://www.harrys.se/ |
There is a Harrys in seventeen different towns in Sweden. It is an established brand, and quite a successful one at that. There is not much to say about the food—it is of good quality but not special in any way. The pub offers a nice environment to eat in, but perhaps unsuitable for a romantic dinner. There are regular stand-up comedy evenings at Harrys in Gothenburg: more than one comedian has embarrassed him- or herself here. Happy Harry takes place every weekday between 4p and 7p, Saturdays between 1p and 7p, at which times you can find good offers on both food and drinks. The nearest tram stop is Valand, for tramlines 3, 4, 5, 6, 8. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exclusive, homely feeling |
Haga Nygata 12 Gothenburg 41301 Sweden +46 31 13 4090 |
Right in the middle of Haga, Hemma hos (the equivalent of Chez) has a nice view of the cobbled street and the passersby. Hemma hos emphasises a familiar yet exclusive atmosphere and has a selection of well made, tasty dishes. The décor is simple but at the same time very romantic. The food is better than oher restaurants in Haga generally offer, and therefore also more expensive; but there is also a bar menu with a number of dishes. Nearest tram stop: Hagakyrkan (lines 1, 3, 4 and 9). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Henriksberg is a very popular venue for arranging parties, as the amazing views from the roof terrace cannot be beaten by anything else in Gothenburg. The menu offers a lot of seafood. The restaurant is only open at night in the summer; in the winter only lunch is available. But the bar is open year-round. Certain nights are club nights; the DJs play anything from the latest techno to salsa, depending on what night it is. The nearest tram stop is Stigbergstorget, for lines 3, 4 and 9. Exclusive and expensive with cheaper bar menu |
Djupedalsgatan 2 Gothenburg 413 07 Sweden +46 31 12 1031 |
Hos Pelle has been awarded an environmental diploma by the City of Gothenburg because of its eco friendly services. The food is modern and expensive and includes a lot of seafood, at least in the starters. There is also duck, several meat dishes and a vegetarian dish that varies according to the season. Hos Pelle is an exclusive restaurant with high standards, holding its own against the competition. There is also a cheaper bar menu for those who would like to sit in the bar area. Cosy cellar with mixed menu |
Karl Gustavsgatan 7 Gothenburg 411 25 Sweden |
Jojo Bar å Kök (Yo—yo bar and kitchen) is in Vasastan, an area well—known for its Asian restaurants. This restaurant is popular among the younger generation, partly for its modest prices but also for its happenings and its bar. Every Wednesday there's live soul music on stage, and on Tuesdays a stand—up comedian entertains the guests. Both nights have free admission. At the weekends there is often a bar DJ, and the music leans towards soul and hip—hop. And in the summer, the outdoor courtyard is often full. Many of Gothenburg's bars and restaurants offer After Work specials on Friday afternoons. At Jojo, this means cheap beer and a free Italian buffet. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Kometen has lived past its heyday. But its central location between the Avenue and Heden still makes it easy for people to find the restaurant. There are many different starters and several fish and meat dishes to choose from. And even if most of the à la carte dishes are available in children's portions, there is a children's menu. Romantic basement restaurant |
Östra Larmgatan 20 Gothenburg 41107 Sweden +46 31 711 8540 |
Källarkrogen (Basement Restaurant) is in the middle of town and has been a restaurant for forty years. But the food-related activities have taken place in the building since the eighteenth century, when a butcher had his shop here. Typical for Gothenburg's restaurants is plenty of fish and seafood; this is true for Källarkrogen as well. Most of the starters are marine in nature, but there are plenty of meat dishes among the main courses. The restaurant is also open for lunch. It is very cosy, with low brick vaults and lots of candles. Definitely romantic. The nearest tram stop is Kungsportsplatsen, where lines 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restaurant with high ambitions |
Aschebergsgatan 22 Gothenburg 41127 Sweden +46 31 20 1595 |
Lagom is a Swedish word that doesn't seem to exist in any other language. It means just right, or just enough, and has come to have almost negative connotations. But restaurant Lagom certainly strives to be more than just right: it is much better than that. The menu offers a selection of seafood dishes with a twist, but there are several salads, meat and pasta dishes for those who don't eat fish. The word lagom does suit the interior, though, which is quite commonplace. It is nothing flashy and the walls are not completely bare. The nearest tram stop is Vasaplatsen, for lines 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pizzas and other food near Svenska Mässan |
Skånegatan 39 Gothenburg 41252 Sweden +46 31 16 4160 |
Le Baron, in spite of its name, is quite a pleasant, humble little restaurant offering both pizzas and an à la carte menu, among other things. The restaurant is right opposite Svenska Mässan, where many exhibitions and conferences are held. It is cosy but small, with brick walls and chequered tablecloths. The menu offers pizzas, several solid meat and fish dishes, and also some cheaper smaller ones and a number of pasta dishes of which one is vegetarian. There are several salads to choose from and a separate children's menu. The pizzas are available for takeaway. The daily lunches include a choice of the pizzas from the menu and also a traditional Swedish dish, which varies from day to day. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Linnéa is on Södra Vägen, not far from Götaplatsen, and is one of Gothenburg's finest restaurants. The dining area is divided into several different rooms and decorated in a modern yet simple style. There are several different menus to choose from, apart from the regular dishes. Set three-course meals in different price classes, are available, as well as special menus composed by the chefs using the ingredients of the day. The business dinner menu includes a starter, a main course, coffee and truffle. The daily lunch is expensive and exclusive but always includes the choice of a low calorie dish. The wine list is never-ending with a wide assortment at varying prices. The nearest tram stop is Berzeliigatan, where lines 4 and 5 stop. Långedrags Paviljong is both a restaurant and a café. It is located only 40 metres from the ocean and has plenty of marine tidbits on offer. The restaurant does a lot of catering, arranges weddings and conferences and can whip up a shrimp or seafood buffet for larger parties. Oakley's Country club is a show restaurant where anything can happen. Suddenly the waiters and waitresses begin to sing and dance for the guests. And what better fits this American phenomenon than food from the different corners of the USA? But it covers more than just spare ribs and T-bone steaks. Petrushka is the only restaurant in Gothenburg with a vodka and caviar bar. Besides Russian starters and main courses there is a selection of soups, piroghi, bliny and Russian pasta. The staff has no problem recommending appropriate beverages for your meal, and a quick course in restaurant Russian is not out of the question. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Kristinelundsgatan 13 Gothenburg 411 37 Sweden +46 31 18 4478 |
This restaurant has, as the name suggests, several prints of Picasso's artwork in the dining area. But the food itself is not very different from that of many other restaurants in Gothenburg. The menu is large and varied, most dishes are available in half-portions and apart from the regular main courses there is also a pizza and a pasta menu. Many of the dishes are available for take-away. And for anyone who like munchies late at night, there is a midnight menu, offered from 11p, with everything from olives to chili-marinated chicken and desserts. Picasso also sells cigars. The three men who run Popcorn met at the catering college in Grythyttan, and decided to start a restaurant together. The aim —to create a menu based on the French cuisine but inspired by Swedish traditions and international adventurousness. Find out whether they have succeeded in this endeavour. Order the set five-course menu or the vegetarian two-course one. Popcorn has a varied wine list, with about 100 different types of wines, 30 of them available by glass. The restaurant is cosy and warm, and the cellar is partly decorated with old farming tools. Review © 2007, Wcities |

International restaurant |
Södra Vägen 20 Gothenburg 412 54 Sweden +46 31 16 0345 |
Restaurang?, or Frågetecknet (Question Mark), as it is really called, offers a variety of dishes from many countries, some with a Swedish touch. There are also several pasta dishes, which are available as starters, in smaller portions. The menu is international: the Bosnian speciality cevapcici shares the menu with the Italian dessert tiramisù. The reason for the questionable name is mainly due to all the problems that delayed the opening of the restaurant. Many questions were left unanswered and hence the owners decided to name the restaurant after them. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Turn-of-the-century setting |
Linnégatan 32 Gothenburg 41304 Sweden +46 31 24 0890 |
This building is over a hundred years old and was decorated in a style typical of that period. The owners have striven to recreate this environment with hand-printed wallpaper, benches stuck to the walls, panels and mahogany furniture. The menu, however, is not outdated; in fact the restaurant strives to be innovative. It is a sister restaurant to the more exclusive 28+, but uses simpler ingredients and has lower prices. The large veranda is extremely popular in the summer. The view of Linnéstan is magnificent and the antique setting inside a perfect complement. Review © 2007, Wcities |

S/S Marieholm is the last of the Swedish America Line's fleet still in Sweden, and still bears the shipping company's colours and chimney mark. Now, however, there is a large dining room, veranda bar, pool with sauna and conference room onboard. The restaurant is closed in the evenings during the winter months.
