Grilled beef - you decides how |
Linnégatan 5 Gothenburg 41304 Sweden +46 31 775 0441 http://www.hereford-beef.com |
A Hereford Beefstouw specialises in grilled Hereford beef imported directly from Australia. The restaurant is part of a Danish chain. The restaurant provides the meat, the guest chooses how it is to be prepared and what will accompany the dish. The heavily laden salad buffet with many different vegetables and ingredients to choose from is good as a starter, and can be had as a meal in itself. The lunch menu is slightly cheaper. The décor is sturdy and solid, with wooden floors and stable oak tables. Since A Hereford Beefstouw is situated centrally, this is a popular place for business lunches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dutch genius near Ullevi |
Odinsgatan 19-21 Gothenburg 41103 Sweden +46 31 15 5709 |
This is something as unbelievable as a Dutch neighbourhood restaurant, located in between Ullevi and the train station. It offers traditional Dutch cuisine, deep-fried dishes, some smaller courses and pancakes in a genuinely friendly Dutch atmosphere. The actual restaurant is quite simple, the walls are cluttered with Dutch curiosities. The location of the restaurant is fairly central, near Nordstan with its shopping and just a stone's throw from Ullevi, the arena where many events take place. The nearest tram stop is Centralstationen, for lines 1, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dining area with mixed menu downstairs, bar upstairs |
Kungsportsavenyn 29 Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden +46 31 20 6087 |
Babar has a pleasant dining area with large windows overlooking Avenyn. The menu is mixed, with selections of vegetarian dishes, seafood and roasts. Both traditional dishes and modern ones are on offer. The dining room has a very different ambience from the bar; it has a sense of intimacy and cosiness. Upstairs, the bar sports a games area and large windows, also overlooking Avenyn. These make the bar seem larger than it actually is. Every day the bar offers a two—for—one deal on most drinks until 10pm, and on Sundays the offer is valid all night. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Neighbourhood restaurant in the centre of town |
Torggatan 1 Gothenburg 41105 Sweden +46 31 711 1606 |
Bommen has a tried and tested, successful concept. Lunches are served on weekdays for those who work nearby, and a pub and à la carte menu are available in the evenings and on weekends for passers-by and regulars. The menu offers a selection of meat and fish dishes and there is also one vegetarian dish. There are no surprises in the starters and desserts either, this is purely ordinary food without any twists. The restaurant is nicely furnished, the marine details that characterise so many of the restaurants in Gothenburg are present even here. The nearest tram stop is Lilla Bommen, where tram 5 and several buses stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restaurant with 132 different kinds of beer |
Drottninggatan 41 Gothenburg 41107 Sweden +46 31 710 1160 |
Brasserie Ferdinand is right in the centre of Gothenburg, under the large store NK. Ferdinand was voted Beer Restaurant of the Year in 1996, and beer probably is the main item of interest here. There are 132 different brands of beer, most of them bottled. But Brasserie Ferdinand also has a varied menu, with both meat and fish dishes. There is always a vegetarian main course and every weekday between 5p and 8p, they serve a Dinner of the Day for SEK58 (EUR6.44). There is also a bar menu with slightly cheaper dishes, such as seafood soup or chili with nachos and trimmings. For those interested in organising some fun for a group of people, there are beer-tasting nights which are only available by booking. These include the history of beer and the information on how beer is distilled, among other things. The nearest tram stop is Brunnsparken, where all trams stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Australian style and flavours |
Kristinelundsgatan 16 Gothenburg 411 37 Sweden +46 31 81 1812 http://www.dancindingo.se |
Genuine Australian bar and restaurant, owned by an Australian. Dancin' Dingo, in a basement not far from Avenyn, is most popular for the inexpensive beer. The queues outside are long on weekend nights, and there is a definite risk of a loud and rowdy crowd. Every once in a while, there is a live cover band to entertain the bar guests. The food is typically Australian, with large steaks and burgers with names like Bondi Beach Burger and Outback Sirloin Steak. The actual restaurant is quite cozy, with several different rooms and a simple décor. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Beautifully situated by Stora Teatern |
Kungsparken Gothenburg 41115 Sweden +46 31 701 7070 |
Figaro is in a cellar vault in Stora Teatern, one of the theatres in the centre of Gothenburg, right where Avenyn starts. The view out towards the canal and Kungsparken is magnificent, especially in the summer when the large outdoor service area is open. There is also a very popular outdoor bar at that time. The food is mixed, with an international touch. There is also a lot of barbecued and grilled food. The restaurant seats about 80 guests, many more if you count the outdoor terrace. The nearest tram stop is Kungsportsplatsen, where trams 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Amazing amounts of garlic |
Andra Långgatan 35 Gothenburg 413 03 Sweden +46 31 14 1512 |
Those not fond of garlic should stay well away from this restaurant, because every dish has garlic in it. Even the ice cream. If you are interested in a cocktail before your meal, try a Garlictini. Or why not round off your meal with a garlic shot? Of course, there are normal drinks as well. The restaurant has a selection of fish, meat and poultry dishes, and some are available without garlic. But even the décor consists of many decorations made with this ingredient. Helpful health tips are also written on the walls. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Theme restaurant with stand-up comedy |
Vasagatan 43 Box 5218 Gothenburg 40224 Sweden +46 31 81 2812 http://www.harrys.se/ |
There is a Harrys in seventeen different towns in Sweden. It is an established brand, and quite a successful one at that. There is not much to say about the food—it is of good quality but not special in any way. The pub offers a nice environment to eat in, but perhaps unsuitable for a romantic dinner. There are regular stand-up comedy evenings at Harrys in Gothenburg: more than one comedian has embarrassed him- or herself here. Happy Harry takes place every weekday between 4p and 7p, Saturdays between 1p and 7p, at which times you can find good offers on both food and drinks. The nearest tram stop is Valand, for tramlines 3, 4, 5, 6, 8. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Free concerts at least three times a week |
Vallgatan 8 Gothenburg 411 16 Sweden +46 31 13 4308 http://middag.cjb.net/ |
Jord (Earth) is great for seeing local bands, all shows are free. Jord plays on the elements: earth is vegetarian, fire is red meat and grilled foods, air is poultry and water is seafood. Choose from four menus and several main courses with one starter. If you prefer you can even mix them. The restaurant also presents free concerts thrice a week. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Party at crowded soul club |
Kungsportsavenyn 9 Gothenburg 411 36 Sweden +46 31 701 8090 |
Newly renovated, Nivå has a modern, fresh look. It gets loud and crowded on weekends, though the music is low until 11p. On Wednesday nights popular club Soul Train takes over, with DJs in costume. The kitchen offers ordinary Swedish dishes and pasta. Most come here for drinks and happy hour takes place on weekdays between 4p and 7p when beer costs real cheap and free snacks abound. Sports bar with 30 monitors |
Östra Hamngatan 37 Gothenburg 411 10 Sweden +46 31 711 5519 http://www.olearys.se |
An American sports bar with 30 TVs and three giant screens, O'Learys attracts the true sports fans, offering also a typical American menu. The chain has branches in many Swedish towns but the one in Gothenburg was the first. The two-storey restaurant has several bars and even though the main attractions here are beer and sports, it is possible to have a really good meal. The large selection goes from Chicken Thai to chicken wings, covering everything in between. The décor is typical, with plenty of pictures, sports paraphernalia and red-and-white chequered tablecloths. The personnel is service-minded the American way, dropping by every few minutes to check that everything is satisfactory. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pub with varied menu |
Plantagegatan 1 Gothenburg 41305 Sweden +46 31 42 6092 |
Old Beefeater Inn is kept in a British style and offers many dishes (some of which are actually American). The little pub close to Järntorget is better known as a pub than as a restaurant. There are plenty of different beers, but the main area of interest and knowledge is in fact whiskey, preferably of the Scotch malt variety. There is an à la carte menu, and one with Beefeater specials, which include fish and chips, burgers and sandwiches. Unlike many other bars, Beefeater also has a list of bar snacks, with such things as fries with dips and sausage platters. The nearest tram stop is Järntorget, where lines 1, 3, 4 and 9 stop. Exclusive restaurant catering to meat-lovers |
Arkivgatan 7 Gothenburg 41134 Sweden |
Steak is yet another of highly esteemed restaurateur Leif Mannerström's favourite projects. In the beautiful yet humble restaurant, everything from grilled oysters to traditional Swedish cooking and other classics is available. Also on offer are meats from the grill, casseroles, cheeses and other desserts. The prices may be high but the restaurant is one of the most exclusive in Gothenburg. Review © 2007, Wcities |
