Inexpensive local restaurant |
Herkulesgatan 3A Gothenburg 41701 Sweden +46 31 65 4095 |
The low ceiling of this place, and its wooden tables and benches establish a beer-hall atmosphere, and perhaps also the illusion that you are outdoors when actually indoors. The menu is simple, with plenty of meat, a little fish, a little pasta and a few smaller dishes. Drinks and ice creams are always included in the children's menu. Happy Hour takes place every day between 3p and 10p, when a large draught beer costs SEK25 (EUR2.95). Live music is played every Friday and Saturday. Ada's hardly belongs to the crème de la crème of Gothenburg's restaurant life, but offers inexpensive, good food and quick service for those undeterred by cluttered walls and a large, rowdy bar. The nearest tram stop is Hjalmar Brantingsplatsen, served by tramlines 2 and 5 and plenty of buses. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dutch genius near Ullevi |
Odinsgatan 19-21 Gothenburg 41103 Sweden +46 31 15 5709 |
This is something as unbelievable as a Dutch neighbourhood restaurant, located in between Ullevi and the train station. It offers traditional Dutch cuisine, deep-fried dishes, some smaller courses and pancakes in a genuinely friendly Dutch atmosphere. The actual restaurant is quite simple, the walls are cluttered with Dutch curiosities. The location of the restaurant is fairly central, near Nordstan with its shopping and just a stone's throw from Ullevi, the arena where many events take place. The nearest tram stop is Centralstationen, for lines 1, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Neighbourhood restaurant in the centre of town |
Torggatan 1 Gothenburg 41105 Sweden +46 31 711 1606 |
Bommen has a tried and tested, successful concept. Lunches are served on weekdays for those who work nearby, and a pub and à la carte menu are available in the evenings and on weekends for passers-by and regulars. The menu offers a selection of meat and fish dishes and there is also one vegetarian dish. There are no surprises in the starters and desserts either, this is purely ordinary food without any twists. The restaurant is nicely furnished, the marine details that characterise so many of the restaurants in Gothenburg are present even here. The nearest tram stop is Lilla Bommen, where tram 5 and several buses stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Theme restaurant with stand-up comedy |
Vasagatan 43 Box 5218 Gothenburg 40224 Sweden +46 31 81 2812 http://www.harrys.se/ |
There is a Harrys in seventeen different towns in Sweden. It is an established brand, and quite a successful one at that. There is not much to say about the food—it is of good quality but not special in any way. The pub offers a nice environment to eat in, but perhaps unsuitable for a romantic dinner. There are regular stand-up comedy evenings at Harrys in Gothenburg: more than one comedian has embarrassed him- or herself here. Happy Harry takes place every weekday between 4p and 7p, Saturdays between 1p and 7p, at which times you can find good offers on both food and drinks. The nearest tram stop is Valand, for tramlines 3, 4, 5, 6, 8. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exclusive, homely feeling |
Haga Nygata 12 Gothenburg 41301 Sweden +46 31 13 4090 |
Right in the middle of Haga, Hemma hos (the equivalent of Chez) has a nice view of the cobbled street and the passersby. Hemma hos emphasises a familiar yet exclusive atmosphere and has a selection of well made, tasty dishes. The décor is simple but at the same time very romantic. The food is better than oher restaurants in Haga generally offer, and therefore also more expensive; but there is also a bar menu with a number of dishes. Nearest tram stop: Hagakyrkan (lines 1, 3, 4 and 9). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Unbeatable view of the river |
Stigbergsliden 7 Gothenburg 41463 Sweden +46 31 24 8205 http://www.henriksberg.com |
Henriksberg is a very popular venue for arranging parties, as the amazing views from the roof terrace cannot be beaten by anything else in Gothenburg. The menu offers a lot of seafood. The restaurant is only open at night in the summer; in the winter only lunch is available. But the bar is open year-round. Certain nights are club nights; the DJs play anything from the latest techno to salsa, depending on what night it is. The nearest tram stop is Stigbergstorget, for lines 3, 4 and 9. Small traditional restaurant in the centre of town |
Hvitfeldtsgatan 8 Gothenburg 41120 Sweden +46 31 711 6669 |
Jonny På Hörnet (Johnny On The Corner) in Kungshöjd is a small, local restaurant that mostly serves lunch. The rooms are light, with light-green curtains and pale walls that create a definite at-home feeling. Being here is exactly like sitting in a friend's kitchen. The food is typical of a Swedish kvarterskrog (a small local restaurant): a few starters, some fish dishes and of course plenty of meat. The nearest tram stop is Grönsakstorget (on lines 1, 2, 4, 7 or 9), but anyone unfamiliar with the area should come equipped with a detailed map. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Established Gothenburg restaurant |
Vasagatan 58 Gothenburg 41137 Sweden +46 31 13 7988 |
Kometen has lived past its heyday. But its central location between the Avenue and Heden still makes it easy for people to find the restaurant. There are many different starters and several fish and meat dishes to choose from. And even if most of the à la carte dishes are available in children's portions, there is a children's menu. All kids are offered ice cream after their meal. The nearest tram stop is Valand, where trams 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Romantic basement restaurant |
Östra Larmgatan 20 Gothenburg 41107 Sweden +46 31 711 8540 |
Källarkrogen (Basement Restaurant) is in the middle of town and has been a restaurant for forty years. But the food-related activities have taken place in the building since the eighteenth century, when a butcher had his shop here. Typical for Gothenburg's restaurants is plenty of fish and seafood; this is true for Källarkrogen as well. Most of the starters are marine in nature, but there are plenty of meat dishes among the main courses. The restaurant is also open for lunch. It is very cosy, with low brick vaults and lots of candles. Definitely romantic. The nearest tram stop is Kungsportsplatsen, where lines 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restaurant with high ambitions |
Aschebergsgatan 22 Gothenburg 41127 Sweden +46 31 20 1595 |
Lagom is a Swedish word that doesn't seem to exist in any other language. It means just right, or just enough, and has come to have almost negative connotations. But restaurant Lagom certainly strives to be more than just right: it is much better than that. The menu offers a selection of seafood dishes with a twist, but there are several salads, meat and pasta dishes for those who don't eat fish. The word lagom does suit the interior, though, which is quite commonplace. It is nothing flashy and the walls are not completely bare. The nearest tram stop is Vasaplatsen, for lines 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pizzas and other food near Svenska Mässan |
Skånegatan 39 Gothenburg 41252 Sweden +46 31 16 4160 |
Le Baron, in spite of its name, is quite a pleasant, humble little restaurant offering both pizzas and an à la carte menu, among other things. The restaurant is right opposite Svenska Mässan, where many exhibitions and conferences are held. It is cosy but small, with brick walls and chequered tablecloths. The menu offers pizzas, several solid meat and fish dishes, and also some cheaper smaller ones and a number of pasta dishes of which one is vegetarian. There are several salads to choose from and a separate children's menu. The pizzas are available for takeaway. The daily lunches include a choice of the pizzas from the menu and also a traditional Swedish dish, which varies from day to day. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exclusive and expensive modern restaurant |
Södra vägen 32 Gothenburg 41254 Sweden +46 31 16 1183 |
Linnéa is on Södra Vägen, not far from Götaplatsen, and is one of Gothenburg's finest restaurants. The dining area is divided into several different rooms and decorated in a modern yet simple style. There are several different menus to choose from, apart from the regular dishes. Set three-course meals in different price classes, are available, as well as special menus composed by the chefs using the ingredients of the day. The business dinner menu includes a starter, a main course, coffee and truffle. The daily lunch is expensive and exclusive but always includes the choice of a low calorie dish. The wine list is never-ending with a wide assortment at varying prices. The nearest tram stop is Berzeliigatan, where lines 4 and 5 stop. It is not a long walk from Avenyn and Valand, where many more trams stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Popular lunch restaurant with live music |
Värmlandsgatan 18 Gothenburg 41328 Sweden +46 31 12 5549 |
Louice has live music every Friday and Saturday. Apart from the live music, the lunches are the big draw. This place is usually full at lunchtime, mostly because the eatery offers speedy service and three different specials to choose from. The menu is international, with everything from wok to pasta dishes. Of course, there is also plenty of traditional Swedish cooking. The nearest tram stop is Järntorget. Review © 2007, Wcities |

French/Italian restaurant in Linnéstan |
Nordenskiöldsgatan 28 Gothenburg 41309 Sweden +46 31 14 4553 http://www.manfreds.o.se/ |
Manfred's is a kind of exclusive pub/restaurant that specialises in the Mediterranean cuisine, something that fits the style of the Linnéstan area perfectly. The lunch specials always consist of solid, traditional Swedish cooking, though the evening menu is more elegant. The Sunday dinners tend to be more international. The décor is unpretentious, the atmosphere pleasant and the food relatively inexpensive. A tile stove in one of the corners of the restaurant increases Manfred's coziness. The nearest tram stops are Järntorget for lines 1, 3, 4 and 9, or Linnéplatsen (line 1 and 2). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Billiards, Internet café, restaurant and nightclub |
Ekelundsgatan 9-11 Gothenburg 41118 Sweden +46 31 13 8482 http://www.palatset.com |
This is an entertainment centre with a lot to choose from, including an internet café, billiards, darts, a restaurant, bar and a nightclub. The menu is simple, featuring lots of meat, in the form of a hamburger platter, chicken grilled on a spit and more. For those organising a corporate party, there are two buffets that can be served; one is Tex-Mex, the other American. On the nightclub scene, Palatset has become a place to reckon with. Two major clubs have moved to the restaurant and organise 80s parties and other happenings here. The nearest tram stop is Grönsakstorget, where lines 1, 2, 4, 7, and 9 stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pizzeria with midnight menu and a bit more |
Kristinelundsgatan 13 Gothenburg 411 37 Sweden +46 31 18 4478 |
This restaurant has, as the name suggests, several prints of Picasso's artwork in the dining area. But the food itself is not very different from that of many other restaurants in Gothenburg. The menu is large and varied, most dishes are available in half-portions and apart from the regular main courses there is also a pizza and a pasta menu. Many of the dishes are available for take-away. And for anyone who like munchies late at night, there is a midnight menu, offered from 11p, with everything from olives to chili-marinated chicken and desserts. Picasso also sells cigars. Fine neighbourhood restaurant |
Lorensbergsgatan 8 Gothenburg 41136 Sweden +46 31 20 8690 |
The three men who run Popcorn met at the catering college in Grythyttan, and decided to start a restaurant together. The aim —to create a menu based on the French cuisine but inspired by Swedish traditions and international adventurousness. Find out whether they have succeeded in this endeavour. Order the set five-course menu or the vegetarian two-course one. Popcorn has a varied wine list, with about 100 different types of wines, 30 of them available by glass. The restaurant is cosy and warm, and the cellar is partly decorated with old farming tools. Review © 2007, Wcities |

International restaurant |
Södra Vägen 20 Gothenburg 412 54 Sweden +46 31 16 0345 |
Restaurang?, or Frågetecknet (Question Mark), as it is really called, offers a variety of dishes from many countries, some with a Swedish touch. There are also several pasta dishes, which are available as starters, in smaller portions. The menu is international: the Bosnian speciality cevapcici shares the menu with the Italian dessert tiramisù. The reason for the questionable name is mainly due to all the problems that delayed the opening of the restaurant. Many questions were left unanswered and hence the owners decided to name the restaurant after them. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Turn-of-the-century setting |
Linnégatan 32 Gothenburg 41304 Sweden +46 31 24 0890 |
This building is over a hundred years old and was decorated in a style typical of that period. The owners have striven to recreate this environment with hand-printed wallpaper, benches stuck to the walls, panels and mahogany furniture. The menu, however, is not outdated; in fact the restaurant strives to be innovative. It is a sister restaurant to the more exclusive 28+, but uses simpler ingredients and has lower prices. The large veranda is extremely popular in the summer. The view of Linnéstan is magnificent and the antique setting inside a perfect complement. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Former steamship offering food and sauna |
Packhuskajen 8 Gothenburg 41113 Sweden +46 31 10 5965 |
S/S Marieholm is the last of the Swedish America Line's fleet still in Sweden, and still bears the shipping company's colours and chimney mark. Now, however, there is a large dining room, veranda bar, pool with sauna and conference room onboard. The restaurant is closed in the evenings during the winter months. But even if S/S Marieholm offers the daily lunches that are so common in Sweden all year round, it still has a few more expensive dishes on the side to choose from. The nearest tram stop is Lilla Bommen, served by tramline 5 and several buses. It is, however, not far from Brunnsparken, where most trams stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional Swedish food at reasonable prices |
Vasaplatsen 3 Gothenburg 411 24 Sweden +46 31 13 2247 http://www.smaka.se |
Good, traditional dishes are served here for modest prices in a dark blue milieu. The design is simple yet impressive, as is the food. Smaka (Taste) has received many points from local food critics. The Swedish meatballs here are famous. The bar is very popular, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. There is an After Work hour on Fridays where guests are offered a free buffet and cheap beer and wine. It may get a bit rowdy, and perhaps crowded, but if all you want is a meal, you will not be disturbed if you arrive around nine. It seldom gets noisy before ten. Review © 2007, Wcities |
