The Alster swimming pool boasts interesting architecture and has a lot to offer. As major swimming competitions are carried out here, there is a 50m pool for competitive swimming and a 10m diving platform, as well as stands for spectators. There is a lovely area with inflatable toys for little non-swimmers and a whirl pool for grown-ups to relax in. A heated outdoor pool is just one of the many other attractions. You can also visit the spacious sauna or the Easy-Fit gym to try and lose some extra pounds. In addition to the swimming facilities, the Alster-Schwimmhalle offers a lot of different courses for children and adults, such as aquatics, aqua-jogging, gymnastics for rheumatism or diving courses to name just a few. You can also get tasty snacks and drinks at the bistro. Review © 2007, Wcities |

After it was renovated and fitted with a new steam engine in 1994, the Alstertourism company has given it scheduled tours again - just like in the old days. The "people's park" in Altona is one of the biggest parks in Hamburg and offers many possibilities for recreation and sports on its huge lawns. People go jogging and cycling here, and take their dogs or themselves for a walk. Others play Frisbee, badminton, "Boccia" and football. The park is occupied by an international armada of barbeque-fanatics particularly during summer weekends. Another summertime attraction is the dahlia garden with 12,000 colourful plants, one of which is elected "people's favourite" every year. It might not be the best idea to come to the park for a quiet and peaceful walk if there is a football match going on at the stadium right next door. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Skaters and ice racers love the ASV |
Appuhnstraße 4 Hamburg, Hamburg 22609 Germany +49 40 82 0548 |
Altona SV is one of the traditonal sports societies in Hamburg. Ambitious ice-skaters and ice sportsmen have been able to practise here since 1893. Figure skaters can have a go at difficult exercises, and those who fear the famous loop jump can try speed skating, a discipline the Altonaer SV has repeatedly been rather successful with. Ice-chess, better known as curling or ice-stick shooting, can be perfomed at the ASV. Due to a lack of sufficient ice-rinks, the ASV also offers other skating sports like rollerblade racing, inline-hockey, speedskating or figure skating with inline skates. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Museum of European Emigration |
Veddeler Bogen 2 Hamburg 20539 Germany +49 40 3197 9160 http://www.ballinstadt.de info@ballinstadt.de |
This innovative museum tackles the previously under-represented topic of European emigration from Germany. The area on which the museum now stands was once filled with temporary housing units that held millions of people over the course of about 40 years from the turn of the 20th century. These men and women came from across Europe to seek transport with the HAPAG lines that left from Hamburg. Now, the museum offers visitors a chance to look back in time and learn about the lives of the people who made a makeshift home at this facility. With complete digitalized passenger lists and interactive displays, the exhibits showcase the rich history of BallinStadt and the trials of the many emigrants who passed through its doors. Ballooning is a very special experience and so is a view of the city from above, while you float in a soft breeze. Ballooning has become popular in Germany recently, and several companies offer roundtrips and flights in Hamburg. 'Ballons über Hamburg' start from six different launch fields and run this service from April to October. Depending on the weather conditions, there are flights lasting 90 minutes from the early morning until sunset. 'Orville-Flug' offer flights in all kinds of aircraft imaginable, as well as very exclusive balloon tours with a 5-star-dinner on board or at night when there is a full moon. 'Taucher-Air' guarantee a minimum of 90 minutes flying time and an unforgettable view of this beautiful city. This business is still quite expensive - tours cost several hundred Deutsch marks. German varnishers´and painters´ museum |
Billwerder Billdeich 72 Hamburg, Hamburg 22113 Germany +49 (0)40 3005 1300 (Information für Touristen) |
Towards the end of the 17th Century wealthy Hamburgers began to build country houses with gardens in the fashion of the Dutch and French baroque style. One of these houses is the Glockenhaus (bell house) at Billwerder Billdeich 72, which was extended by its former owner in 1780. He added a clock and the ridge turret for the bell to the half-timbered farm house construction. Unfortunately the district, which used to be a recreational area for its inhabitants, has lost its charm to motorway road links and industries. But after thorough renovation between the years of 1972 and 1983 it became the home of the German varnishers and painters´ museum, which has a lot of interesting exhibits in this area and an impressive hall of flags. There is no admission fee. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bismarck memorial |
Alter Elbpark Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 42 8630 |
Hamburg's highest monument is that depicting Chancellor Bismarck. At a total height of about 100ft, it is located in the old Elbpark and seems to keep a guarding eye over the Landungsbrücken and the harbour. The stylised statue of Bismarck, leaning on a sword in Medieval battle dress, was created by the sculptor Hugo Lederer and the architect Emil Schaudt in 1903-06. The approximately 45ft figure is made of granite from the Black Forest. Athletic figures are visible on the staircase that forms the base of the statue. They are supposed to symbolise the German tribes. The monument is open all day. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Rectangular park on the Wandse |
Ahrensburger Strasse 14a Hamburg, Hamburg 22041 Germany +49 (0)40 656 0913 |
This park in the Wandsbek district has a long history. Once a company owner from Hamburg planted oaks here, because he needed the oak bark to tan skins for his leather products. That was back in the 18th Century - in the meantime the formerly privately owned park, which used to be part of the Wandsbek estate, has become public greens. Its ponds are maintained, supplied and fished by local angling societies. The Alster bicycle trail also leads through this quiet and picturesque landscape along the Wandse brook. You can get some rest from the daily strain here and look at typical marsh and aquatic plants. A little bit further east there is a schoolgarden and a special botanic garden near Eichtalpark. The first has been designed systematically and shows bushes and flowers, as well as aquatic, poisonous and medicinal plants. The latter also has a lot of very interesting plants and information on them. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Flottbek is an exclusive neighbourhood near the River Elbe and boasts of a small but beautiful golf course. Golfers need to be very accurate so that they don't put too many balls into the nearby river or through the windows of the lovely villas which overlook the course! The large, old trees which are dotted around the course provide some shelter from the elements, but are difficult to play around. Water hazards and sand bunkers are among the other challenges on this 6-hole course, which is spread over a distance of 4,857m. Admission: Review © 2007, Wcities |

Emphasis on fighting sports and physical fitness |
Nieland 10 Hamburg, Hamburg 22525 Germany +49 (0)40 490 3272 http://www.hankook-sportcenter... info@hankook-sportcenter.de |
Fighting sports and physical fitness are very important at the Hankook-Sportscenter. Hankook is the Korean name for Korea and is supposed to express the fusion of body and soul, as well as the balance of opposites. Since 1991, the school of sports has been particularly successful in teaching fighting sports. Children from 6 years of age are welcome to join the lessons, which aim at providing a way to get rid of aggression and support team spirit, discipline and self-confidence at the same time. Sports are a good kind of leisure time activity and they also enable children to stand the daily challenges of Hamburg city-life. With all the sports offered here (taekwondo, boxing, kickboxing and aerobics), the single components of physical fitness are taught - among them strength, endurance and coordination. Training lessons include stretching exercises and gymnastics in order to move every muscle. The sports centre's show team has become very popular with its impressive fighting sport demonstrations at various events and tournaments. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Willkommhöft - the means of greeting ships arriving or leaving the harbour in Hamburg is known by every sailor worth his salt! The place where all this happens is in the Schulauer Fährhaus in Wedel. Every ship with more than 500 BRT, is welcomed or discharged here in their own language over enormous loudspeakers. The country's national anthem is sung and the corresponding flag is hoisted. Additionally, visitors to the harbour are informed of details concerning the travel route, the charge and the data of the ship. Hamburg's Museum of Archaeology and the History of Harburg as it is officially called, was opened in senator Helms' villa in 1925. Helms had founded Hamburg's Museum Society in 1898. From the 1930s onward, there was an increase in archaeological activities until 1972, when Helms Museum officially became Hamburg's only museum dedicated to archaeology. In the main building there are temporary exhibitions, while the permanent exhibition of archaeological finds from the greater Hamburg area and the documentary of Harburg's history is housed at Rathausplatz 5. At the Feuerwache you will find the museum's educational service, which offers very interesting activities for children and school groups. You can learn how to mould stone-age tools from stone and rock, or test your knowledge in a quiz on the exhibition. You can also have a go at working with bronze. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For men only! |
Reeperbahn Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany |
This street in the heart of Hamburg's red-light district is one of the city's most infamous addresses. Small traders used to do business here in the 19th century, but the horizontal trade which now dominates the district has made them disappear one by one. Nowadays, this little lane off Davidstraße is lined by establishments where sparsely-dressed girls sit in dimly-lit windows awaiting male customers. When it gets dark, the red street lamps and lingerie add an almost romantic feel to the place. Not every customer is welcome here - drunkards and those looking for a fight quickly find themselves cooled off by a bucket full of water, and there is no access to Herbertstraße for women! Since 1992, a special museum has been located within the Hittfeld railway station, showing telephones from all over the world, from the early days of telephone communication to the present day. For over three decades, Reiner Pfeiffer, who is now 63 years old, has collected and renovated over one thousand telephones. The most interesting and original pieces are now on display in this museum, as well as a documentary on the history of this indispensable everyday item. Did you know, for example, that before Graham Bell invented the first tele-receiver in 1876, Phillip Reis had already attempted to realise the idea in 1861 using a violin and a knitting needle serving as a receiver? In 1882, by the way, Hamburg - the call-centre capital of the world - held the European telephone line record. You can also get a guided tour of the museum. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Home of the FC St. Pauli soccer team, this popular stadium has seen its share of exciting games - and controversy. When it was built in the 1960s and immediately had to be renovated because of poor drainage issues, setting back the dedication ceremony that had been planned. Over the years, many more renovations have been made to improve safety standards and update the center. In 1970, the stadium was renamed to honor the late president of the team, stirring up controversy because of the man's role in the NSDAP and the Third Reich. Consequently, the stadium reverted back to its original name in 2000. All the controversy aside, the stadium has remained a popular arena for games because of its intimate atmosphere that belies its expansive size. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bathing lake near Hamburg |

The relatively large Mönchsteich (monk´s pond) is located near the Großensee. It is up to 6 feet deep in some places, but ideal for non-swimmers in the shallow area near the shores. There is hardly a breeze on the lake since it is surrounded by forest. You may have open fires on the beach here, so if you can´t afford a trip to Sweden, you might as well come here instead and bring your camping equipment. There is also a little restaurant on the lake´s south eastern shore. The Mönchsteich is a nice destination for a day trip and a break from the noisy city. It is just half an hour away from Hamburg´s city centre. Take the S4 to Rahlstedt, then Bus 364 and get off at Mönchsteich. Review © 2007, Wcities |

There were times when listening to the radio cost just (EUR 1) a month, a dream in comparison to today's horrendous licensing fees! That was in 1924 though, when there were only 896 subscribers and four hours of broadcasting a day. NDR (Norddeutsche Rundfunk) has now grown into a modern media giant with 8 different radio stations - four local broadcasters, NDR2 (music and entertainment), Radio 3 (classical), NDR4-Info (news) and N-Joy Radio (for kids and teenagers) - as well as a major TV channel (N3). People can now visit NDR and take a fascinating guided tour through the studios. The "Tagesthemen", Germany's flagship news show, is produced in the Lokstedt television studios; radio shows are broadcast from the Funkhaus on Rothenbaumchaussee. Please ring the telephone number below for detailed information about visits. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The former concentration camp at Neuengamme is both museum and a memorial, which serve as a warning to future generations. You can learn about the fate of more than 100,000 people who were imprisoned here between 1938 and 1945. Communists, socialists, homosexuals, Jews, Roma, Sinti and criminals were used as forced labour to produce bricks for the nearby brickworks. In 1940, Neuengamme became an actual concentration camp and from 1942 it was used as an armament factory; 55,000 people died here. In addition to a visit to the museum, you can walk around the grounds alone, or go on a guided tour. Review © 2007, Wcities |

At the Niendorfer Gehege there are 120 hectares of recreational grounds for the entire family, so everyone should be able to find something nice to do. In addition to big lawns and old trees, there are playgrounds for children and gymnastics apparatus for sporty people. Barbeques are also allowed in specially designated areas. The main attraction at the Niendorfer Gehege is the deer preserve where you can watch roe and fallow deer. If you are longing for a quiet hike there are several marked tracks you can follow. A real kid magnet is the pony farm at Niendorf preserve where they can go riding. Review © 2007, Wcities |

At the beginning or end of this summertime day trip on the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal you can visit Schleswig-Holstein´s capital, the city of Kiel. You can take a train to Kiel in the morning and start your boat tour from there, or go to Kiel by boat and take a night train back to Hamburg. The train journey takes one hour and 15 minutes and is included in the ticket price. It's DEM 72 (EUR 36) for adults and DEM 39 (EUR 19,5) for children. Large park with a lake |
Barsbütteler Weg Hamburg, Hamburg 22117 Germany +49 (0)40 42 854 3338 http://www.oejendorferpark.de/ Markus.Weiler@Hamburg-Mitte.hamburg.de |
Hamburg´s eastern districts also have a large and attractive park with a big lake and many facilities for leisure activities. The Öjendorfer Park was created in 1958 on the grounds of a former gravel pit. At 143 hectares, it is now Hamburg´s third biggest park and offers hiking trails, sunbathing lawns, a little hill for sleigh-rides and skiing in the winter, a miniature golf course, a kiosk and plenty of parking spaces. You can even go pony-riding here. A 50 hectare lake (Öjendorfer See) with an island is also part of the park. On the island there is an area for the protection of birds. There are several bathing places on the lake which are rather popular in the summer, when visitors from both the neighbourhood and far away places gather here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fruit, vegetables and street curling |
Gerstenkoppel Hamburg, Niedersachsen 22145 Germany +49 (0)41 419 9120 (Information fur Touristen) |
The "Old Country" is located southwest of Hamburg and its "capital" Jork can still easily be reached by public transport. The old marshland was dyked and made fertile as early as in the 12th Century. Today, quality products from this fruit and vegetable paradise are delivered to places far beyond the greater Hamburg area. A good time for trips is late spring when the seemingly endless orchards are in full bloom and then again during the harvest season. On the first weekend in May there is a "blossom-festival" in Jork, including a parade with the new "Fruit Blossom Queen". In winter a form of curling on the orchard paths is a popular hobby around here-of course you need some fruit wine to keep warm. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nostalgic rail tours |
Hamburg, Niedersachsen 21337 Germany +49 (0)4131 207 6620 (Information fur Turisten) |
Two institutions in the greater Hamburg area offer very special day trips which come pretty close to time travelling. Not only trainspotters but everybody who likes to wallow in nostalgia will enjoy a ride on these oldtimer trains. There are scheduled rides with historic trains and engines to the Lüneburger Heide and the upper Elbe region. You can also charter the museum trains for private parties. A nice and comfortable alternative mode of transport compared to modern "transrapid" trains. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An idyllic lake with boat hire |
Waldstraße Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein 25355 Germany +49 (0)4123 9 0560 |
Barmstedt is a popular recreational area in the north of Hamburg. The Rantzauer lake is one of the main attractions, and you can take long walks here. The castle island of Rantzau and the buildings on its premises are one of Schleswig-Holstein´s cultural monuments. There is a café at the castle´s former prison, where you can enjoy excellent waffles-perhaps the best ones in the entire region. You can also hire pedalos here. Moreover, there is a miniature golf course, a rhododendron park and an artificial wave pool, and there are plenty of parking spaces. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Art and events inside the castle |
Schlossstraße 5 Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein 21465 Germany +49 (0)40 727 9162 http://www.schloss-reinbek.de/ info@schloss-reinbek.de |
Reinbek Castle was designed as a hunting lodge. Adolf Duke of Schleswig-Holstein Gottorf built it in 1576 in the fashion of the Dutch Renaissance. It is located by a beautiful little lake, which makes it both a good starting point or final destination for a long walk. The building was thoroughly refurbished from 1977-1987 and has served as a cultural centre since then. Temporary art exhibitions and classical concert as well as many other events take place here. There is also a nice café with an open-air terrace within the castle. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Maritime museum with restaurant |
Landungsbrücken, Ponton 1a Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 319 5959 http://www.rickmer-rickmers.de/ info@rickmer-rickmers.de |
Built in Bremerhaven in 1896 and named after a pirate, Rickmer Rickmers was turned into a maritime museum in 1987. After a turbulent history under the Portuguese and several changes of name, the three-mast galleon was bought by the association Windjammer für Hamburg in 1975, thoroughly restored and given back its original name. The ship is now docked at the harbour entrance, close to the Landungsbrücken. The on-board restaurant offers authentic maritime meals and a special brunch on the first Sunday of every month. Numerous events and exhibitions are held here. Review © 2007, Wcities |
