Hamburg, Hamburg 22769

The stage of this versatile establishment in Altona sees frequently changing fairly well-known regional ensembles presenting quite an impressive range of acting excellency. At Agma Zeitbühne it is cabaret one night and comedy another, but there are also song recital evenings, where artists present French chansons, for example. The place is open to experimental projects like improvisational theatre as well. If you are open to slightly different and unconventional kinds of drama and performance, you will like the Zeitbühne's programme.

The Allee Theater is a special institution within Hamburg's theatre scene. Four years ago, Mr and Mrs Deeken, the owners of the theatre for children, set up this additional establishment on their premises. It is a little chamber opera, but not for children this time. Apart from chamber music and interesting guest performances by other theatre companies, there are stagings of rare opera pieces, mainly of a light and romantic nature. Lavish stage sets create a suitable ambiance for these performances.

The Lustspielhaus is nicely situated, facing a little church in the immediate neighbourhood of the Komödie at Winterhuder Fährhaus. Since 1984, there have been a great number of guest performances by top rate German satirists such as Goldt, Hildebrandt, Scheibner and Hüsch, to name but a few. Alma Hoppe´s own satirical, political productions are also a very good reason to visit this theatre. There are impressive reductions for students (DEM 12/ EUR 6). Parking is so far the only thing that doesn't raise a smile around here, so you'd be better off on a bus - lines 106 or 113 serve the area.

This old-school private theatre is situated within a pleasant 3-minute walking distance from Altona station. Catering to a slightly older audience, the theatre stages classic productions which are faithful to the original. But since the reopening in 1995 modern plays and comedies can also be found in the programme. The establishment is fitted with facilities for the disabled, among them an infra-red system for the hard of hearing. The dead poets' society on Sundays is a special event: Members of the theatre company read from the works of their favourite (dead) poets. The entry fees go towards a foundation for the support of successful future authors.

Germany's first art society was founded by a group of art-lovers in 1817. In 1826, the first public exhibition took place and in 1836, the first pieces were obtained for the society's collection. In the mid-19th century, the Kunstverein contributed much to the inception of the Kunsthalle. Nowadays, after moving several times, the society's headquarters are located at Klosterwall. It has two large exhibition rooms, which are used for experimental exhibitions by young artists as well as retrospectives of influential modern and postmodern artists. The society also organises lectures, seminars, workshops and excursions. Guided tours are organised every Sunday.

The Audimax is more than an amphitheater where students listen to major lectures or organize their protests. It's also a great hall seating up to 1664 people and hosting numerous events. Sometimes a theater, sometimes a movie theater and sometimes a concert hall, it has a great sound system and a wide stage to host major performances. Besides the main hall that can be divided in two, the Foyer, with its glass wall is very much enjoyable to visitors keen to take part in campus life.

The Entrée is a really versatile location in the lively and interesting Schanzen district. This is where the PENG authors' group presents the newest works of literature. The musical style of preference here is jazz, which for the most part is played over their CD-player, but there are also occasional concert nights. There is always a cheerful crowd at the busy Café Sommerterrassen. They stage live music on a more or less daily basis and the ambience has a certain Brazilian flair. It is for the most part trendy and high society regulars who frequent this cafe. Such a beautifully located café on the Stadtpark canal does not have particularly reasonable prices, but has other attractive features-customers can watch canoeists go by from the terrace and if the place is just too packed, hire a canoe from the café's own berth and explore Hamburg's canals. 'Sommerterrassen' (Summer terraces) is a more than apt name, as in good weather it is a perfect spot in which to soak up some sun (usually until at least 8pm) and a beautiful sunset.

The Curio house has a striking facade and a lot to offer inside. It used to be the students' cafeteria but fortunately, the beautiful building was renovated into a very versatile concert and events venue. Sports and costume balls are held frequently in the large old ballroom and on the second Friday of every month there is a popular singles party called Fisch sucht Fahrrad. The Curio house has got an excellent restaurant. Nothing remains to indicate that it was once a student cafeteria-except for the size of the room itself. The chef provides his guests with an outstanding service and sophisticated cuisine for discerning palates. There also is a nice old concert hall here decorated in burgundy with an enormous chandelier. Here, Jazz and Latin music are played in a festive ambience.

Today, the Deichtorhallen are showrooms for modern art exhibitions of all kinds, such as photography, design, new media and installations. Since 1998 the privately maintained Star Theater has been located in a former high society disco in Eimsbüttel. It is Hamburg's only theatre where food is available. The theatre's café is open from 5pm daily. The establishment mainly stages musicals, but among other special events there are also frequent midnight revues and guest appearances. A firm favourite at the Star Theater is 'Freak Out', a 1970's musical with lots of loud costumes and excellent dancing, and 'Shout', where Beehive Girls pay homage to great ladies like Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross and Janis Joplin. Other musicals are also staged.

Put on in a spectacular setting by the canal, this open-air theatre festival attracts thousands of visitors from all over the region every July and August. Although it dates back 500 years, the medieval play, which deals with themes such as death and the devil, love and forgiveness, seems as contemporary as ever. Director Michael Batz's interpretation of the (somewhat gruesome) piece is full of wit and humour, and contains numerous parodies of current affairs. All in all, the play provides a multifaceted portrait of Hamburg society. Irony, satire and humour at its best.

This theatre, one of the biggest in the country, has been named Theatre of the Year on several occasions. The magnificent white building, which dates from 1900, has a Rococo style interior; busts of Goethe, Schiller, Lessing and Kleist are reminders of Germany's rich theatrical tradition. Leading actors and directors such as Gustav Gründgens, Ulrich Wildgruber, Karin Beier, Christoph Marthaler have all worked here, and the Schauspielhaus still attracts some of Germany's biggest names. Some plays are written especially for the Schauspielhaus and many others are premiered on one of the three stages (Großes Haus, Malersaal and Kantine). Productions tend to be ground-breaking and innovative.

The exhibition has already been staged all over North America, Europe and Japan, and is now being shown in Hamburg. Blind people lead visitors through pitch black exhibition rooms which are meant to represent everyday place such as a park, a living room, a crossroads and a pub. Hamburg's only professional English-speaking theatre has already become an institution in the city. Comedies and crime works by contemporary British and American authors are performed in naturalistic scenery by an almost entirely British cast. School classes are often brought here and try to grasp at least the gist of what is happening on stage. The theatre even supplies teaching material on each play as a special service. The lobby and bar are rather plain and the only real problem here is the so-called air conditioning system. Fresh air provided merely by opening all the windows during intervals!

Irish, Irish, Irish and everyone speaks English, drinks pints of Guinness, and chats away about rugby and football. That´s what people expect of an Irish pub and that´s exactly what you might encounter at Finnegan's Wake. It is a real piece of Ireland in Hamburg. Not at all Irish are the late opening hours, however. There is no need for speedy heavy drinking and hectic last orders around 11p, which makes a visit so much more enjoyable for all.

The little Galerie Kramer is located on the second floor of a warehouse in the Speicherstadt. A squeaky wooden floor and the view of the canal create a special atmosphere here. The gallery specializes in the genres of caricature and cartoons. For several years already, the works of popular German cartoonists like Tetsche and Haderer, as well as international artists have been shown in exhibitions here. But local cartoonists can also prove that it is not just the British who are capable of black humour. The exhibitions here are definitely worth seeing and they will always beautifully horrible.

The encyclopedia has the following definition for the term cabaret: "An ironical performance analysing contemporary issues, with mainly topical political references, which are presented in dialogues, sketches, parodies and chansons by one or more actors". Live on stage at the cabaret festival in Hamburg, every bit of this definition is proven. There are lots of cabaret nights with satire and the year's issues are mocked, but the many facets of the genre are best experienced at this festival. Not only the stars and the old masters of cabaret go on stage here, but the audience also gets to meet some new faces.

After he perfected the arts of ballet dancing, singing and acting, May worked for various renowned establishments such as the Landestheater Schleswig-Holstein, the Schaupielhaus Zürich and the Schiller Theatre in Berlin. There were quite a few difficult obstacles to overcome on the way to his own Imago Theater as we know it today. His one-man productions of various authors' works, such as Kafka, Hesse, Becket, Tolstoi, Ionesco, Camus, Turrini and Böll, have been staged in Hamburg's smallest theatre since 1987.

The Mon Marthe in Eppendorf is a popular theme pub with frequent political cabaret nights. If you enjoy satire and professional ironical entertainment with artistic criticism of the government or certain political parties, you should visit this place. Guest performances of well-known artists like Alma Hoppe are no rarity here. But the Mon Marthe also supports newcomer artists like musicians and painters. A friendly, mixed crowd with lots of intellectual and politically interested regulars also comes here for a chat or a little discussion on the flaws of the establishment and politics in general, even on nights when there is no show.

The opulent, neo-baroque Music Hall was built in 1904-08, thanks to donations by the prominent merchant family Laeisz. The concert hall seats 2,000 and the small concert hall seats 610. On the first floor of the foyer, you can admire a statue of Johannes Brahms, who was born in Hamburg. A red granite cube depicts his development as a composer. The Musikhalle is permanent home to the NDR Symphony Orchestra and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. Other orchestras, choirs, soloists and conductors visit on a regular basis, so there is always something going on. If you are a chamber music fan then be sure to attend one of the first-rate performances in the small concert hall.

When it's summer in the city and you want to watch a film, do you really want to sit indoors if there is open-air cinema outside? And Hamburg offers open-air film nights with a certain flair in many places—Schanzenpark being one example. In the case of rain the event takes place inside the theatre tent next to the park. But it is much nicer in the fresh air beneath the stars—and where would the stars shine brighter than at Sternschanze (star gate)? The open-air cinema nights will be back next summer.

A popular cabaret venue in the early 1900s, many a star was born here until the building was destroyed in a 1943 air raid. A new building was opened on the same site in 1953 and has since become a beloved venue for musicals, such as Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats.

While its little blue neighbour is immediately crowded, there is enough room for all at this pub, even later at night. So whether it is a pint, a game of table football or a chat you want, you can have it all at a decent noise level, as the dance-floor where you can shake a leg to Ska, Dub and Reggae tracks is to be found at the far end of the Planet. On mild summer nights you can drink, chat and talk politics outside in the backyard.

Germany
+49 (0)40 280 2121
http://www.pulverfasscabaret.de/
The Pulverfass is among the most popular show nightclubs in Hamburg. With its cabaret, it attracts an enthusiastic, mixed audience, some of whom are locals, whilst others come a long way for the entertainment here. Among them are well-known music business and media faces. The programme changes monthly and includes guest appearances by celebrity artists, travesty, and erotic, funny and cheeky entertainment-often with incredibly colourful costumes. So the name of the place is pretty apt. It has always been somewhat explosive around here-the Pulverteich used to have a tower where gun-powder was stored. The Crazy Boys next door where you can experience male strip shows and witty and original songs and sketches is also part of the same establishment. Food and drink is also available, the menu features small snacks such as baguette with goose breast, or a full three-course cabaret meal.

Despite its name, saxophones are not the only instruments played here. Musicians from the state opera and the operetta come here from time to time after performances to enjoy themselves and throw the odd jam session. Latin-American or saxophone music is the usual fare, and Friday is Salsa night, with lots of flirting and misbehaviour. An original visual detail within the interior are the saxophone-shaped beer tabs at this nice establishment. The barley juice first flows through the golden horn before it reaches the thirsty throats of the cheerful guests.

Versatile establishment in Barmbek

The Zinnschmelze in Barmbek is located near the museum of work. It is a very versatile venue and community centre with lots of interesting offers for the young and the slightly older. Every Sunday at 2p, for example, you can try out all kinds of board games for free at the establishment´s café. There are also darts and cardgame meetings. Children are offered handicrafts and film afternoons. The older ones can come here for disco nights, exhibitions, salsa-events and lectures, but the Zinnschmelze´s emphasis is on theatre and live music. Young drama groups perform their plays here, and you can also see comedians on stage. Concerts vary from jazz, folk and Latin music to Andalusian nights.
