Hamburg Art Society |
Klosterwall 23 Hamburg, Hamburg 20095 Germany +49 (0)40 33 8344 http://www.kunstverein.de/ |
Germany's first art society was founded by a group of art-lovers in 1817. In 1826, the first public exhibition took place and in 1836, the first pieces were obtained for the society's collection. In the mid-19th century, the Kunstverein contributed much to the inception of the Kunsthalle. Nowadays, after moving several times, the society's headquarters are located at Klosterwall. It has two large exhibition rooms, which are used for experimental exhibitions by young artists as well as retrospectives of influential modern and postmodern artists. The society also organises lectures, seminars, workshops and excursions. Guided tours are organised every Sunday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Deichtorhallen |
Deichtorstrasse 1 - 2 Altstadt Hamburg, Hamburg 20095 Germany +49 (0)40 32 10 30 http://www.deichtorhallen.de/ |
A flower market was held here every day up until 1962. After it was moved elsewhere, the market halls, fine examples of how utility buildings were designed in the early 20th century, stood empty. Thanks to a large donation, they were restored in 1989 and thus saved. Today, the Deichtorhallen are showrooms for modern art exhibitions of all kinds, such as photography, design, new media and installations. There are no permanent exhibitions, just frequently changing ones on certain themes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

What's it like to be blind |
Alter Wandrahm 4 Hamburg, Hamburg 20457 Germany +49 (0)700 4433 2000 http://www.dialog-im-dunkeln.de/ |
Not many people can imagine what it's really like to be blind. Life without light, colors and shapes. This exhibition, known as 'dialogue in the dark', ingeniously confronts people with the reality of blindness, and attempts to show them the world of non visual perceptions. The exhibition has already been staged all over North America, Europe and Japan, and is now being shown in Hamburg. Blind people lead visitors through pitch black exhibition rooms which are meant to represent everyday place such as a park, a living room, a crossroads and a pub. Tours start every 15 minutes and take about an hour. Visits must be booked in advance. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Admiralitätsstraße 71 Hamburg, Hamburg 20459 Germany +49 (0)40 36 4131 http://www.doerrie-priess.de |
Ulrich Dörrie and Holger Priess generally choose to exhibit modern and contemporary art. The emphasis is on English and northern European art, but local artists may also exhibit from time to time. Many different modes of expression are represented: sketches, oil paintings, watercolour paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos. The owners prefer to exhibit conceptual and minimalist art, which gain effect from the interaction with space. The gallery shares its home in Admiralitätsstraße with other well-known galleries such as Jürgen Becker, Wilma Tolksdorf and Sautter+Lackmann. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional gallery with an emphasis on Horst Janssen |
Magdalenenstraße 11 Harvestehude Hamburg, Hamburg 20148 Germany +49 (0)40 410 4091 http://www.galeriebrockstedt.de |
Opened in 1959 and at home in a beautiful villa in Harvestehude, Galerie Brockstedt displays works by Spanish realists and artists from the 1920s, by artists from the Neue Sachlichkeit (new realism) movement, and by post-war painters such as Richard Oelze and Johannes Grützke. Above all though, this gallery exhibits works by Horst Janssen. Brockstedt has dedicated more exhibitions to this artist than any other gallery-owner in Hamburg. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cartoonists at the Speicherstadt |
Brooktorkai 16 Altstadt Hamburg, Hamburg 20457 Germany +49 (0)40 3005 1300 (Information für Touristen) |
The little Galerie Kramer is located on the second floor of a warehouse in the Speicherstadt. A squeaky wooden floor and the view of the canal create a special atmosphere here. The gallery specializes in the genres of caricature and cartoons. For several years already, the works of popular German cartoonists like Tetsche and Haderer, as well as international artists have been shown in exhibitions here. But local cartoonists can also prove that it is not just the British who are capable of black humour. The exhibitions here are definitely worth seeing and they will always beautifully horrible. Paintings and sculptures in a historic country house |
Grotiusweg 79 Hamburg, Hamburg 22587 Germany +49 (0)40 81 0581 http://www.elke-droescher.de |
Elke Dröscher has presented concrete art in her showrooms since 1968, both radical reduced paintings and sculptures, as well as vintage photography. She started off in the Magdalenenstraße, but her gallery can now be found in a building near the Falkenstein banks which has been put under a preservation order. Elke Dröscher renovated the former ruin herself, and today it is all bright and shiny again. In front of the country house, a park and a panoramic view of the river Elbe are inviting places to take a walk. Inside the building, paintings and sculptures from the 20th century, as well as a collection of puppets await the visitors. Since 1991, Elke Dröscher has also run a showroom with a photography exhibition in the Galeriehaus at Admiralitätstraße 71. Review © 2007, Wcities |
