On the Campus |
Von-Melle-Park 4 Hamburg 20146 Germany +49 40 428 387 05 http://www.marketing.uni-hambu... |
The Audimax is more than an amphitheater where students listen to major lectures or organize their protests. It's also a great hall seating up to 1664 people and hosting numerous events. Sometimes a theater, sometimes a movie theater and sometimes a concert hall, it has a great sound system and a wide stage to host major performances. Besides the main hall that can be divided in two, the Foyer, with its glass wall is very much enjoyable to visitors keen to take part in campus life. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small cinema in Hamburg´s south |
Hauptstraße 32 Neu Wulmstorf Hamburg, Hamburg 21629 Germany +49 (0)40 700 8547 http://www.capitol-kino.de/ |
Hamburg´s south now has a cosy little cinema for those who do not want to go all the way to the city center. The programme is not very original, but shows all the recent mainstream productions. Many of the films are even German premiéres. A friday night late show has recently been established, where either the top film or a special feature is presented. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Drive-in cinema |
Moorfleeter Straße 2 Hamburg, Hamburg 22113 Germany +49 (0)40 732 1111 |
Hamburg´s only drive-in-cinema in the south-east of the city belongs to the endangered species. Consider all its advantages, however: People who like to talk all the way through the film and bawl out the punch-lines to spoil your entertainment won´t get on anybody´s nerves here. And those who like to leave their litter behind might think twice in their own beloved car. As the drive-in cinema is not exactly located in Hamburg´s most charming neighbourhood, everybody can be happy when it is dark enough for mainstream productions. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dammtordamm 1 Kino CinemaxX Hamburg, Hamburg 20354 Germany +1 805 246 3629 http://www.fantasyfilmfest.com... |
The annual fantasy film festival is not a true Hamburg event, but the city contributes to it by presenting festival films at the Cinemaxx at Dammtor station. They whisk the audience away to different worlds with fascinating alien creatures and magic, supernatural powers. The films are shown in Berlin, Stuttgart, Cologne, Frankfurt and Munich, the locations of Rosebud Entertainment. Tickets are available at the festival cinemas, including the Zeise. Here is a film house with a history. From 1959 there has been a large variety of films ranging from mainstream to high class on six screens. The place was completely refurbished in 1995. Apart from films you can watch the Oscar and Grammy award nights here as well as Formula 1 and the Champions League. Another remarkable service is the early morning show at 6am including a large breakfast. And last, not least, you can enjoy your film along with a nice cup of coffee and a piece of cake! International Short-Film Festival |
Friedensallee 7 Hamburg, Hamburg 22765 Germany +49 (0)40 3910 6323 http://www.shortfilm.com |
"The Short Film Festival has taken place every year since 1985. Apart from the international competition, there are German films as well as a no budget competition, which is in fact what triggered off the whole idea of today's film festival. The BitfilmFestival, a special programme exclusively showing digital video productions, was added as well. The children's film festival with a fringe program for children of various age groups is also recommended. The full programme can be found on the Web site; the festival takes place in several cinemas across Hamburg, including the Zeise." Review © 2007, Wcities |

Concerts and films |
Spielbudenplatz 19 Docks Club Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 3178 830 http://www.docks.de/ |
At the beginning of the last century the Docks was one of the first cinemas around. Since the 1980s it has mainly served as a venue for concerts and club nights. On Saturday nights though, you can watch films here again. It is advisable to bring a cushion, because the folding chairs they have there are not exactly everybody´s cup of tea. The cheap tickets and free popcorn on the other hand are generally much appreciated. Filmwise it is horror movies, action thrillers and anything that passes as cult-film. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cinema for experimental films |
Gaußstraße 25 Hamburg, Hamburg 22765 Germany +49 (0)40 380 0836 http://www.lichtmess-kino.de |
What do the Lichtmesz in Ottensen have in common with the Metropolis at Gänsemarkt and B-Movie in the Schanzenviertel? A demanding gourmet audience of film lovers, first of all. A programme which is light-years away from stale mainstream productions, as well. And an openness for the art film, too - whole series of them, actually. The pleasant little film-house is also a stage for experimental film projects and No-Budget-Movies-just like the other two renowned establishments. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fiefstücken 8a Hamburg, Hamburg 22299 Germany +49 (0)40 51 2234 / +49 (0)40 511 3920 http://www.hamburg-magazin.de/... |
You will find this lovely cinema near the Stadtpark in a building which has been put under a preservation order—the Magazin has just celebrated its 26th anniversary. The latest films may arrive here a few weeks later than at the big film houses, but low prices and a very friendly atmosphere certainly make up for those minor delays. There is a variety of lollipops available in the lobby that will keep you busy until at least halfway through the show. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cinema at the main station |
Hachmannplatz 2 Hamburg, Hamburg 20099 Germany +49 (0)40 24 5803 |
The Neues Broadway cinema is located next to the main station, so it only takes about 2 minutes on foot to slip into a soft and comfortable chair and enjoy a good film. The discriminating cinema enthusiast will look in approval at the choice of films presented here. It is surprising that the exquisite international mainstream productions on the program do not find a greater audience. You might do something to help it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cinema beneath the stars |
Schanzenpark Hamburg, Hamburg 20357 Germany http://www.openairkinos.de/web... |
When it's summer in the city and you want to watch a film, do you really want to sit indoors if there is open-air cinema outside? And Hamburg offers open-air film nights with a certain flair in many places—Schanzenpark being one example. In the case of rain the event takes place inside the theatre tent next to the park. But it is much nicer in the fresh air beneath the stars—and where would the stars shine brighter than at Sternschanze (star gate)? The open-air cinema nights will be back next summer. Traditional cinema |
Jungfernstieg 38 Hamburg, Hamburg 20354 Germany +49 (0)40 34 6051 |
This charming old-fashioned cinema inside the Streit's house at Gänsemarkt has enjoyed a long history. Despite its unique flair, it is up-to-date with the latest technology. The film house seats 563 visitors and on Sunday matinees, shows for the most part American movies in their original versions. Streit's is also well known for its many previews. There is always a programme featuring tastefully chosen films at Streit's. The seats on the balcony are exceptionally comfortable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Another multiplex! |
Gänsemarkt 45 Hamburg, Hamburg 20354 Germany +49 (0)40 3571 1921 |
The UFA-palace is another of Hamburg's multiplex cinemas. Spread over 4 levels, there are ten screens, seating between 150 and 820 visitors. You can watch the latest mainstream productions for various age groups in THX, Dolby SRD and DTS quality. The building's facade has recently been given an impressive 60 feet glass front. The Ufa-Palast used to be Europe's largest cinema! There is a wide range of sweet and salty snacks available in the foyer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Village cinemas |
Hamburger Straße 9 Mundsburg Hamburg, Hamburg 22083 Germany +49 (0)40 227 0427 |
This impressive 8-screen-complex at Mundsburg Center belongs to Hamburg´s big luxury filmhouses. The foyer upstairs is so spacious, that you almost expect a shuttle service to cover the distance from the elevator to the ticket counter. Thankfully the show rooms are not that gigantic with 164-430 seats. Premieres of the latest film productions can be seen on big screens in digital sound quality. The programme is not much different from UCI or Ufa. Draws a young crowd. Review © 2007, Wcities |
