Alma Hoppe's German comedy theatre! |
Ludolfstraße 53 Hamburg, Hamburg 20249 Germany +49 (0)40 5556 5556 http://www.almahoppe.de/ |
The Lustspielhaus is nicely situated, facing a little church in the immediate neighbourhood of the Komödie at Winterhuder Fährhaus. Since 1984, there have been a great number of guest performances by top rate German satirists such as Goldt, Hildebrandt, Scheibner and Hüsch, to name but a few. Alma Hoppe´s own satirical, political productions are also a very good reason to visit this theatre. There are impressive reductions for students (DEM 12/ EUR 6). Parking is so far the only thing that doesn't raise a smile around here, so you'd be better off on a bus - lines 106 or 113 serve the area. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Annual cabaret festival |
Spielbudenplatz 29/30 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 4711 0666 http://www.st-pauli-theater.de/ |
The encyclopedia has the following definition for the term cabaret: "An ironical performance analysing contemporary issues, with mainly topical political references, which are presented in dialogues, sketches, parodies and chansons by one or more actors". Live on stage at the cabaret festival in Hamburg, every bit of this definition is proven. There are lots of cabaret nights with satire and the year's issues are mocked, but the many facets of the genre are best experienced at this festival. Not only the stars and the old masters of cabaret go on stage here, but the audience also gets to meet some new faces. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The privately-run Imperial Theater is located at the beginning of the Reeperbahn, Hamburg's notorious red-light strip. The Hotel Imperial is located in the same building, which might solve any problems if you can't get home after a long night out. The theatre seats 280 and features musicals like the 'Rocky Horror Picture Show', comedy nights, children's theatre and the odd striptease, a common sight in the red light district. There is a bar in the foyer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Even the very young theatre-goer will be satisfied with the fairytales, crime story plays and musicals for children. The little Prince is not really just a fairytale for children of course. The Mon Marthe in Eppendorf is a popular theme pub with frequent political cabaret nights. If you enjoy satire and professional ironical entertainment with artistic criticism of the government or certain political parties, you should visit this place. Guest performances of well-known artists like Alma Hoppe are no rarity here. But the Mon Marthe also supports newcomer artists like musicians and painters. A friendly, mixed crowd with lots of intellectual and politically interested regulars also comes here for a chat or a little discussion on the flaws of the establishment and politics in general, even on nights when there is no show. Travesty and cabaret |
Reeperbahn 147 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 280 2121 http://www.pulverfasscabaret.de/ |
The Pulverfass is among the most popular show nightclubs in Hamburg. With its cabaret, it attracts an enthusiastic, mixed audience, some of whom are locals, whilst others come a long way for the entertainment here. Among them are well-known music business and media faces. The programme changes monthly and includes guest appearances by celebrity artists, travesty, and erotic, funny and cheeky entertainment-often with incredibly colourful costumes. So the name of the place is pretty apt. It has always been somewhat explosive around here-the Pulverteich used to have a tower where gun-powder was stored. The Crazy Boys next door where you can experience male strip shows and witty and original songs and sketches is also part of the same establishment. Food and drink is also available, the menu features small snacks such as baguette with goose breast, or a full three-course cabaret meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Floating theatre |
Holzbrücke 2 Nikolaifleet Hamburg, Hamburg 20459 Germany +49 (0)40 6965 0580 http://www.theaterschiff.de/ |
In the 1980s, Christa and Eberhard Möbius turned their ship into a floating theatre. The 120-seater ship is docked in a picturesque part of the old town near the Nikolaifleet. The theatre, originally founded in 1975, is the only one of its kind in Europe, and the 'crew' present a programme of literary plays, cabaret and satire, aided by the occasional prominent guest. Das Schiff also puts on plays especially for children. See the daily press for details. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Three guesses what might be going on in an establishment the name of which roughly translates as a "place where you get worn out by laughter". You may have a laugh here - buckets full, actually. The SchlapplacHHalde at the cultural event venue Schlachthof is a place for revue, variety shows, comedians and anything that goes under cabaret. You are pleasantly entertained here with singing and dancing, readings and other performances by amateur and professional representatives of all genres. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This splendidly renovated turn-of-the-century theater on the Reeperbahn offers a fantastic program of events that includes comedy shows and cabaret, musicals and chanson evenings. The theater attracts some of the biggest names in showbusiness including German cabaret legends like Helge Schneider and Marlene Jaschke. Most shows sell out well in advance, so it is a good idea to reserve tickets at the earliest opportunity. After the show theater-goers can relax with a meal and a glass of wine at the in-house bistro or dance the night away at Angie's nightclub. Review © 2007, Wcities |

St. Pauli's oldest theater is located on the Reeperbahn, right next to the legendary Davidwache (David's Watch). The exterior we see today dates from 1898. Maurienstraße 19 Hamburg, Hamburg 22305 Germany +49 (0)40 299 2021 http://www.zinnschmelze.de/ |
The Zinnschmelze in Barmbek is located near the museum of work. It is a very versatile venue and community centre with lots of interesting offers for the young and the slightly older. Every Sunday at 2p, for example, you can try out all kinds of board games for free at the establishment´s café. There are also darts and cardgame meetings. Children are offered handicrafts and film afternoons. The older ones can come here for disco nights, exhibitions, salsa-events and lectures, but the Zinnschmelze´s emphasis is on theatre and live music. Young drama groups perform their plays here, and you can also see comedians on stage. Concerts vary from jazz, folk and Latin music to Andalusian nights. Review © 2007, Wcities |
