On the Campus |
Von-Melle-Park 4 Hamburg 20146 Germany +49 40 428 387 05 http://www.marketing.uni-hambu... |
The Audimax is more than an amphitheater where students listen to major lectures or organize their protests. It's also a great hall seating up to 1664 people and hosting numerous events. Sometimes a theater, sometimes a movie theater and sometimes a concert hall, it has a great sound system and a wide stage to host major performances. Besides the main hall that can be divided in two, the Foyer, with its glass wall is very much enjoyable to visitors keen to take part in campus life. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dieter Roloff's traditional Cotton Club at Großneumarkt is one of Hamburg's most popular and busy jazz clubs. Traditional jazz has been played to an audience of regulars for almost 40 years and they still keep coming back for more. In addition to the Old Merry Tale house band, there are lots of guest appearances by renowned international bands. Among others, the Cotton Club Big Band, Monty Sunshine and the Bourbon Skiffle Company have been on stage here. On Sundays, there is a nice lunchtime jazz session with reasonably priced drinks. Versatile concert and events venue |
Rothenbaumchaussee 13 Hamburg, Hamburg 20148 Germany +49 (0)40 4190 2224 http://www.curiohaus.de |
The Curio house has a striking facade and a lot to offer inside. It used to be the students' cafeteria but fortunately, the beautiful building was renovated into a very versatile concert and events venue. Sports and costume balls are held frequently in the large old ballroom and on the second Friday of every month there is a popular singles party called Fisch sucht Fahrrad. The Curio house has got an excellent restaurant. Nothing remains to indicate that it was once a student cafeteria-except for the size of the room itself. The chef provides his guests with an outstanding service and sophisticated cuisine for discerning palates. There also is a nice old concert hall here decorated in burgundy with an enormous chandelier. Here, Jazz and Latin music are played in a festive ambience. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Grand Football Stadium |
Sylvesterallee 7 (Stellingen) Hamburg, Hamburg 22525 Germany +49 40 41 5503 http://www.hsv-aolarena.de/ |
The FIFA World Cup Stadium Hamburg (formerly the Volksparkstadion) is one of Germany's most impressive sports arenas. Rebuilt in 1998, it can now seat over 50,000 spectators. The Stadium will host the 2006 World Cup finals and is currently home to FC Hamburg football team as well as being a venue for major concerts. The VIP boxes are particularly good for corporate entertainment. The most famous match to have taken place here was the legendary 1974 World Cup duel between West and East Germany. It was the only time that these two teams ever played each other, and, to everybody's amazement, the East Germans won 1-0. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Highlight of the Ballet Season |
Caspar-Voght-Strasse 54 Hamburg, Hamburg 20355 Germany +49 (0)40 211 1880 http://www.hamburgballett.de/ |
Every summer, the Hamburg Ballet finishes its season with the Ballett-Tage, a fortnight-long orgy of ballet and dance. John Neumaier, manager and artistic director of the Hamburgische Staatsoper, started this tradition in 1975. The programme includes works by Neumaier and his students, as well as by international guest ensembles. The highlight of the Ballett-Tage is the Nijinksi Gala on the final night, which features numerous international guests and always deals with a specific aspect of the history of ballet and dance. Theatre and concerts - a real experience |
Max-Brauer-Allee 16 Hamburg, Hamburg 22765 Germany +49 (0)40 4412 3660 http://www.hamburger-kammerspi... |
This lovely and intimate privately-run theater is one of the city's top spots for culture vultures. Plays have been staged here since 1918, when Erich Ziegel opened the house with a Frank-Wedekind-Week. Later on, a Jewish Cultural Federation had its offices here, and in 1945, Ida Ehre saved the theater by campaigning against its closure. This is the place to watch first class theatre; sometimes concerts are also held here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cultural centre with theatre stages and concert rooms |
Jarrestraße 20 Hamburg, Hamburg 22303 Germany +49 (0)40 270 9490 http://www.kampnagel.de/ |
The factory halls built here in 1865 are now the venue of a culture complex of international renown. There are concert halls, nightclubs, and a cinema. The many stages are mainly used by independent theatre companies and are much frequented. The halls were actually meant to be demolished in the 1980s, but now they are no longer to be ignored. Many international festivals are also held here, be they in the fields of dance, music or theatre. Moreover, popular flea and antiques markets take place here, and there is a café and bar for visitors. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße 81 Hamburg, Hamburg 20355 Germany +49 (0)40 2805 1462 |
The Mission is an original place with real characters. "Creative measures against coldness" you might call it. There are frequent independent music events with real "independent" bands in the literal sense of the word. So if you would like to spend an evening with lots of interesting and exciting people, you should pay a visit to the Mission. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Political cabaret in Eppendorf |
Tarpenbekstraße 65 Hamburg, Hamburg 20251 Germany +49 (0)40 47 5402 |
The Mon Marthe in Eppendorf is a popular theme pub with frequent political cabaret nights. If you enjoy satire and professional ironical entertainment with artistic criticism of the government or certain political parties, you should visit this place. Guest performances of well-known artists like Alma Hoppe are no rarity here. But the Mon Marthe also supports newcomer artists like musicians and painters. A friendly, mixed crowd with lots of intellectual and politically interested regulars also comes here for a chat or a little discussion on the flaws of the establishment and politics in general, even on nights when there is no show. Concert hall for classical music |
Johannes-Brahms-Platz Hamburg, Hamburg 20355 Germany +49 (0)40 357 6660 http://www.musikhalle-hamburg.de |
The opulent, neo-baroque Music Hall was built in 1904-08, thanks to donations by the prominent merchant family Laeisz. The concert hall seats 2,000 and the small concert hall seats 610. On the first floor of the foyer, you can admire a statue of Johannes Brahms, who was born in Hamburg. A red granite cube depicts his development as a composer. The Musikhalle is permanent home to the NDR Symphony Orchestra and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. Other orchestras, choirs, soloists and conductors visit on a regular basis, so there is always something going on. If you are a chamber music fan then be sure to attend one of the first-rate performances in the small concert hall. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Schlossstraße 5 Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein 21465 Germany +49 (0)40 727 9162 http://www.schloss-reinbek.de/ |
Reinbek Castle was designed as a hunting lodge. Adolf Duke of Schleswig-Holstein Gottorf built it in 1576 in the fashion of the Dutch Renaissance. It is located by a beautiful little lake, which makes it both a good starting point or final destination for a long walk. The building was thoroughly refurbished from 1977-1987 and has served as a cultural centre since then. Temporary art exhibitions and classical concert as well as many other events take place here. There is also a nice café with an open-air terrace within the castle. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Smells like teen spirit |
Heidenkampsweg 32 Hamburg, Hamburg 20097 Germany +49 (0)40 23 2367 |
The Tonwerk used to be called ZILLO, which is also the name of an independent music magazine. On its flyers, it refers to itself as a "meeting place" and this is certainly true at the weekend, when the place fills up with young party people. The music ranges from indie to golden oldies, and this was one of the first establishments in town to have Kurt Cobain memorial nights. They prove very popular, perhaps because it "smells like teen spirit". Review © 2007, Wcities |

Horse-racing and betting |

This is the place in which twice a week, real horse-racing experts get together. A risky, exhilarating bet on a horse remains an unknown pleasure for most visitors to Hamburg, but is well worth the hopes and worries during the race. Speculators are free to attempt to extract some information and advice from a bookmaker or simply place a bet immediately. Perhaps your luck will be in and a tip from those in the know is worth a fortune...imagine a stretch-limo to celebrate in style! Bets can be placed from 6:30-9pm on Thursdays, and from 2-7pm on Sundays. The race tracks are open all year. In summer, this place also serves as an open-air venue for live concerts.
