Angie's nightclub is a great place for a night out, featuring live music by Floy, 'The White Queen of Soul', and Angie's house band (swing, jazz, funk and dance). There are frequent guest appearances by local bands at the start of the week. The cosy sofas are ideal for flirting or regenerating. When the audience from the next-door Tivoli arrive after midnight, the place really starts to heave. The bar has over 100 different cocktails, which are available at half price during happy hour . Jazz music and readings |
Juliusstraße 13-15 Hamburg, Hamburg 22769 Germany +49 (0)40 430 4042 |
The Entrée is a really versatile location in the lively and interesting Schanzen district. This is where the PENG authors' group presents the newest works of literature. The musical style of preference here is jazz, which for the most part is played over their CD-player, but there are also occasional concert nights. The bar is a pleasant place in which good music and interesting events soon make customers feel at home. This is much appreciated by the clientele, which is composed of mainly intellectual regulars. Canal-side café in the park |
Südring 44 Hamburg, Hamburg 22303 Germany +49 (0)40 270 6274 |
There is always a cheerful crowd at the busy Café Sommerterrassen. They stage live music on a more or less daily basis and the ambience has a certain Brazilian flair. It is for the most part trendy and high society regulars who frequent this cafe. Such a beautifully located café on the Stadtpark canal does not have particularly reasonable prices, but has other attractive features-customers can watch canoeists go by from the terrace and if the place is just too packed, hire a canoe from the café's own berth and explore Hamburg's canals. 'Sommerterrassen' (Summer terraces) is a more than apt name, as in good weather it is a perfect spot in which to soak up some sun (usually until at least 8pm) and a beautiful sunset. Traditional jazz has been played to an audience of regulars for almost 40 years and they still keep coming back for more. In addition to the Old Merry Tale house band, there are lots of guest appearances by renowned international bands. Among others, the Cotton Club Big Band, Monty Sunshine and the Bourbon Skiffle Company have been on stage here. On Sundays, there is a nice lunchtime jazz session with reasonably priced drinks. Ebert's in Schenefeld, with its 600 square metre party area, is one of Hamburg's largest discos. DJs like Radio Hamburg's John Ment play danceable party hits from the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties, and entertain the cheerful crowd of regulars with various theme parties and shows that the latter can take part in. There is live music; concerts start a little later at night, usually around 10.30p. The regulars here are mainly twenty and thirty-somethings and Zombies and Black Russians remain the favourite drinks at the bar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Shamrocks and shenanigans |
Börsenbrücke 4 Hamburg, Hamburg 20457 Germany +49 (0)40 374 3433 |
Irish, Irish, Irish and everyone speaks English, drinks pints of Guinness, and chats away about rugby and football. That´s what people expect of an Irish pub and that´s exactly what you might encounter at Finnegan's Wake. It is a real piece of Ireland in Hamburg. Not at all Irish are the late opening hours, however. There is no need for speedy heavy drinking and hectic last orders around 11p, which makes a visit so much more enjoyable for all. Made famous by the Beatles in the early sixties, this establishment is sacred ground. Three decades later, the main hall of the Große Freiheit hosts bands like Beck, Tocotronic and the Cranberries. The Kaiserkeller is still a narrow basement club, full of atmosphere-Mondays features underground music; Tuesdays hip-hop, soul and house; Wednesdays new wave and punk; Thursdays indie and trip-hop; Fridays and Saturdays a mix of indie, rock, hip-hop and chart hits; Sundays oldies. Hamburg's oldest concert venue hosts a variety of concerts from Sunday to Thursday. REM and Bryan Adams have honoured this place with their presence, and Sean Lennon has also hit the stage, just a few steps from where his famous father once played. From 10p at weekends, the dancefloor is crowded with young and old rockers, as well as other alternative types. The interior is decorated in burgundy and the atmosphere is pleasant. Oasis in Wilhelmsburg |
Industriestraße 125-131 Hamburg, Hamburg 21107 Germany +49 (0)40 4210 0390 http://www.honigfabrik.de/ |
The community centre in Wilhelmsburg also functions as an cultural entertainment venue and offers a varied programme every month. Be it live music, theatre or a pub and table football night - the Honigfabrik (honey factory) has it all. At the weekends there are disco-nights which are particularly popular among older regulars. Newcomer bands are familiar with the place, too, since they are frequently given opportunities to appear on a professional stage here. So lots of Wilhelmsburg people can enjoy a pub and a concert at the same time and still stay at one and the same location all night. How much good does location-hopping-as performed in the city centre-do you anyway? Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gärtnerstraße 122 Hamburg, Hamburg 20253 Germany +49 40 40 5277 / +49 (0)40 4327 3795 http://www.jazzclub-birdland.d... |
Birdland is one of the most renowned jazz clubs in town. Located in the neighbourhood of Eimsbüttel, it prides itself on past performances by many a well-known artist. The Birdland crew is open to many musical styles, from swing to mainstream. There can be a bebop combo on the programme one night, and a Latin or hard-bop band the next. Make sure you don't miss the popular regular jam and vocal sessions; you can check the current programme on the club's homepage. Admission depends on the artist, but is always moderately priced. There are concessions for students, and members of the Jazz Federation Hamburg e.V. get in free. Tickets are sold at the usual box offices like Collien, Schumacher and Central, plus at Birdland itself. Review © 2007, Wcities |

24-hour pub |
Reeperbahn 22 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 31 4641 |
The Lehmitz is a phenomenon and a firm institution on the Kiez (red light district). It is imperative for visitors to Hamburg to have a drink here, where many a Hamburger feels at home. The pub is open 24 hours a day, you can always get a cheap drink and there is always someone to talk to. Other entertainment includes table football and space invaders, and you can always enjoy the mainly hard'n'heavy music at an impressive volume. Many a local band has performed legendary concerts in the U-shaped bar, and after FC St.Pauli football matches, there is either shared celebrations or the drowning of sorrows. A large variety of beers, spirits, Afri-cola, and coffee are available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located near the university, the Logo offers live music almost every night and is popular with a mixed crowd, although many are students. The music is mostly independent/rock, and the bands tend to be lesser-known - but hey, catch them before they're famous! Bar stools, table football and music posters make for a plain but pleasant interior. The usual beverages are available at the bar. All in all, a decent venue. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Klosterwall 11 Hamburg, Hamburg 20095 Germany +49 (0)40 33 9491 http://www.markthalle-hamburg.de/ |
You could write a book about this concert hall if it didn't exist already: the book was published in 1997 to celebrate the Markthalle's 20th anniversary. Some of the biggest names in the business have played here, including the likes of Pavement, Sepultura, Supergrass, Tocotronic, Yoko Ono and Alanis Morisette. As well as a main hall, there are also two smaller venues which are used for club nights and festivities. A bar offers thirsty concert-goers a choice of refreshments. The Mission is an original place with real characters. Große Brunnenstraße 55a Hamburg, Hamburg 22763 Germany +49 (0)40 410 9953 http://www.planet-subotnik.de/ |
The Subotnik is a well-balanced mix of a pub, beer garden and dance hall, which can be found in a backyard near the Blaues Barhaus. While its little blue neighbour is immediately crowded, there is enough room for all at this pub, even later at night. So whether it is a pint, a game of table football or a chat you want, you can have it all at a decent noise level, as the dance-floor where you can shake a leg to Ska, Dub and Reggae tracks is to be found at the far end of the Planet. On mild summer nights you can drink, chat and talk politics outside in the backyard. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Kastanienallee 20 Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 40 31 7830 http://www.docks.de |
The Prinzenbar is small and exquisite. Located at the back of the Kiez, it is open from 10pm on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays for all those who like a classic mainstream music mix. On every fourth Saturday there is a Funk & Soul night, but apart from disco there are also live concerts and special events like small record label parties and exclusive showcases. The Prinzenbar is distinguished by its remarkable interior which some of you might already know from a Rammstein video clip. A high dome-shaped ceiling and beautifully renovated dimly lit stucco elements create a comfortable and stylish atmosphere. A little staircase leads you onto the gallery, while cherubs smile at you from the walls. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Travesty and cabaret |
Reeperbahn 147 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 280 2121 http://www.pulverfasscabaret.de/ |
The Pulverfass is among the most popular show nightclubs in Hamburg. With its cabaret, it attracts an enthusiastic, mixed audience, some of whom are locals, whilst others come a long way for the entertainment here. Among them are well-known music business and media faces. The programme changes monthly and includes guest appearances by celebrity artists, travesty, and erotic, funny and cheeky entertainment-often with incredibly colourful costumes. So the name of the place is pretty apt. It has always been somewhat explosive around here-the Pulverteich used to have a tower where gun-powder was stored. The Crazy Boys next door where you can experience male strip shows and witty and original songs and sketches is also part of the same establishment. Food and drink is also available, the menu features small snacks such as baguette with goose breast, or a full three-course cabaret meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bar with saxophone shaped beer tabs |
Holstenplatz 18 Hamburg, Hamburg 22765 Germany +49 (0)40 4325 1770 |
Despite its name, saxophones are not the only instruments played here. Musicians from the state opera and the operetta come here from time to time after performances to enjoy themselves and throw the odd jam session. Latin-American or saxophone music is the usual fare, and Friday is Salsa night, with lots of flirting and misbehaviour. An original visual detail within the interior are the saxophone-shaped beer tabs at this nice establishment. The barley juice first flows through the golden horn before it reaches the thirsty throats of the cheerful guests. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This big gym is not only a good place for sport events. Many a major star with a major name has played here. Apart from hysteria-accompanied boy bands and elderly metal bands, a lot of decent representatives of the Rock + Pop business can be seen on stage at the Sporthalle, from Robert Smith to Robbie Williams. Many visitors prefer to pay attention to the high-spirited atmosphere instead of the not exactly world-class sound in this hall. Smells like teen spirit |
Heidenkampsweg 32 Hamburg, Hamburg 20097 Germany +49 (0)40 23 2367 |
The Tonwerk used to be called ZILLO, which is also the name of an independent music magazine. On its flyers, it refers to itself as a "meeting place" and this is certainly true at the weekend, when the place fills up with young party people. The music ranges from indie to golden oldies, and this was one of the first establishments in town to have Kurt Cobain memorial nights. They prove very popular, perhaps because it "smells like teen spirit". Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Zinnschmelze in Barmbek is located near the museum of work. It is a very versatile venue and community centre with lots of interesting offers for the young and the slightly older. Every Sunday at 2p, for example, you can try out all kinds of board games for free at the establishment´s café. There are also darts and cardgame meetings. Children are offered handicrafts and film afternoons. The older ones can come here for disco nights, exhibitions, salsa-events and lectures, but the Zinnschmelze´s emphasis is on theatre and live music. Young drama groups perform their plays here, and you can also see comedians on stage. Concerts vary from jazz, folk and Latin music to Andalusian nights. Review © 2007, Wcities |
