Even more theatre |
Gefionstraße 3 Hamburg, Hamburg 22769 Germany +49 (0)40 430 3435 |
The stage of this versatile establishment in Altona sees frequently changing fairly well-known regional ensembles presenting quite an impressive range of acting excellency. At Agma Zeitbühne it is cabaret one night and comedy another, but there are also song recital evenings, where artists present French chansons, for example. The place is open to experimental projects like improvisational theatre as well. If you are open to slightly different and unconventional kinds of drama and performance, you will like the Zeitbühne's programme. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Chamber opera at the theatre for children |
Max-Brauer-Allee 76 Hamburg, Hamburg 22765 Germany +49 (0)40 38 2959 http://www.alleetheater.de |
The Allee Theater is a special institution within Hamburg's theatre scene. Four years ago, Mr and Mrs Deeken, the owners of the theatre for children, set up this additional establishment on their premises. It is a little chamber opera, but not for children this time. Apart from chamber music and interesting guest performances by other theatre companies, there are stagings of rare opera pieces, mainly of a light and romantic nature. Lavish stage sets create a suitable ambiance for these performances. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Alma Hoppe's German comedy theatre! |
Ludolfstraße 53 Hamburg, Hamburg 20249 Germany +49 (0)40 5556 5556 http://www.almahoppe.de/ |
The Lustspielhaus is nicely situated, facing a little church in the immediate neighbourhood of the Komödie at Winterhuder Fährhaus. Since 1984, there have been a great number of guest performances by top rate German satirists such as Goldt, Hildebrandt, Scheibner and Hüsch, to name but a few. Alma Hoppe´s own satirical, political productions are also a very good reason to visit this theatre. There are impressive reductions for students (DEM 12/ EUR 6). Parking is so far the only thing that doesn't raise a smile around here, so you'd be better off on a bus - lines 106 or 113 serve the area. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Altona theatre |
Museumstraße 17 Hamburg, Hamburg 22765 Germany +49 (0)40 3990 5870 http://www.altonaer-theater.de/ |
This old-school private theatre is situated within a pleasant 3-minute walking distance from Altona station. Catering to a slightly older audience, the theatre stages classic productions which are faithful to the original. But since the reopening in 1995 modern plays and comedies can also be found in the programme. The establishment is fitted with facilities for the disabled, among them an infra-red system for the hard of hearing. The dead poets' society on Sundays is a special event: Members of the theatre company read from the works of their favourite (dead) poets. The entry fees go towards a foundation for the support of successful future authors. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sometimes a theater, sometimes a movie theater and sometimes a concert hall, it has a great sound system and a wide stage to host major performances. Besides the main hall that can be divided in two, the Foyer, with its glass wall is very much enjoyable to visitors keen to take part in campus life. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Since 1998 the privately maintained Star Theater has been located in a former high society disco in Eimsbüttel. It is Hamburg's only theatre where food is available. The theatre's café is open from 5pm daily. The establishment mainly stages musicals, but among other special events there are also frequent midnight revues and guest appearances. A firm favourite at the Star Theater is 'Freak Out', a 1970's musical with lots of loud costumes and excellent dancing, and 'Shout', where Beehive Girls pay homage to great ladies like Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross and Janis Joplin. Other musicals are also staged. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Medieval theatre in spectacular, open-air setting |
Auf dem Sande 1 (Theater in der Speicherstadt) Hamburg, Hamburg 20457 Germany +49 (0)40 369 6237 http://www.speicherstadt.net |
Put on in a spectacular setting by the canal, this open-air theatre festival attracts thousands of visitors from all over the region every July and August. Although it dates back 500 years, the medieval play, which deals with themes such as death and the devil, love and forgiveness, seems as contemporary as ever. Director Michael Batz's interpretation of the (somewhat gruesome) piece is full of wit and humour, and contains numerous parodies of current affairs. All in all, the play provides a multifaceted portrait of Hamburg society. Irony, satire and humour at its best. Review © 2007, Wcities |

One of Germany's best theatres |
Kirchenallee 39 Hamburg, Hamburg 20099 Germany +49 (0)40 24 8710 http://www.schauspielhaus.de/ |
This theatre, one of the biggest in the country, has been named Theatre of the Year on several occasions. The magnificent white building, which dates from 1900, has a Rococo style interior; busts of Goethe, Schiller, Lessing and Kleist are reminders of Germany's rich theatrical tradition. Leading actors and directors such as Gustav Gründgens, Ulrich Wildgruber, Karin Beier, Christoph Marthaler have all worked here, and the Schauspielhaus still attracts some of Germany's biggest names. Some plays are written especially for the Schauspielhaus and many others are premiered on one of the three stages (Großes Haus, Malersaal and Kantine). Productions tend to be ground-breaking and innovative. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hamburg's theatre scene is very diverse, and festivals for new talent see to it that it stays that way. "Die Wüste lebt" (The Desert is Alive) is one such festival. Every year, young directors and artists present their projects on stage at the Hamburger Kammerspiele; their contemporary works are just as new as the faces of the performers. If you would like to experience a somewhat different night of theatre, you can do so during this ten day festival. See local press and Web site for details of programme. Review © 2007, Wcities |

British and American plays |
Lerchenfeld 14 Hamburg, Hamburg 22081 Germany +49 (0)40 227 7089 http://www.englishtheatre.de/ |
Hamburg's only professional English-speaking theatre has already become an institution in the city. Comedies and crime works by contemporary British and American authors are performed in naturalistic scenery by an almost entirely British cast. School classes are often brought here and try to grasp at least the gist of what is happening on stage. The theatre even supplies teaching material on each play as a special service. The lobby and bar are rather plain and the only real problem here is the so-called air conditioning system. Fresh air provided merely by opening all the windows during intervals! Annual cabaret festival |
Spielbudenplatz 29/30 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 4711 0666 http://www.st-pauli-theater.de/ |
The encyclopedia has the following definition for the term cabaret: "An ironical performance analysing contemporary issues, with mainly topical political references, which are presented in dialogues, sketches, parodies and chansons by one or more actors". Live on stage at the cabaret festival in Hamburg, every bit of this definition is proven. There are lots of cabaret nights with satire and the year's issues are mocked, but the many facets of the genre are best experienced at this festival. Not only the stars and the old masters of cabaret go on stage here, but the audience also gets to meet some new faces. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vienna's Peter May has found a nice home for his small literature theatre on the Fleetinsel in Hamburg's New Town. After he perfected the arts of ballet dancing, singing and acting, May worked for various renowned establishments such as the Landestheater Schleswig-Holstein, the Schaupielhaus Zürich and the Schiller Theatre in Berlin. There were quite a few difficult obstacles to overcome on the way to his own Imago Theater as we know it today. His one-man productions of various authors' works, such as Kafka, Hesse, Becket, Tolstoi, Ionesco, Camus, Turrini and Böll, have been staged in Hamburg's smallest theatre since 1987. Manager Gerda Gmelin presents critical contemporary plays here, but the theatre´s programme ranges from classic acting and stagings of crime stories to musicals. As early as the 1950s, the first German staging of Becket´s "Godot" contributed to the excellent reputation of this renowned house. The halls seats an audience of 115 guests. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Once a machine factory |
Borselstraße 14-16 Hamburg, Hamburg 22765 Germany +49 (0)40 390 4611 http://www.theater-basilika.de/ |
What was once a machine factory has, in the last ten years, been transformed into the scene of exquisite entertainment. The building's history creates a unique atmosphere at the Theatre in the Basilica. The company belongs to the independent groups within Hamburg's theatre scene. Over the last ten years, they have been staging comedies by contemporary English and American authors. The programme does, however, also include works by the great German comedian Loriot. The wide variety in the programme appeals to both young and old. Parking facilities are also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Where children's dreams come true |

The Batavia theatre ship is located on the Au, a stream in Wedel. There is a stage inside the ship's small but cosy restaurant room on the upper deck. Plays for children have been staged here since 1974. The theatre has produced more than 25 of its own plays, which are now famous outside Wedel. They are all staged in a suitable manner for children, and their songs and tunes are rather popular among the young audience. Shows are held in the evenings and afternoons. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Now, this really is something special! At Zeppelin, children perform stage plays for children. Productions range from fairy-tales to staging their own stories and even comic strips. They also have a theatre school here, in which kids over the age of 6 can learn about acting and the stage. Yet that's not all: Zeppelin publishes its own magazine in which children and teenagers write articles on a wide range of interesting topics for their peers. Review © 2007, Wcities |
