Built in 1911, Hamburg Airport (HAM) is Germany's oldest airport and was originally used as a take-off point for Zeppelins. Catering to some 9 million passengers a year, the airport is the fourth largest in the country and is being continually modernised - a fact which is visible in the spanking-new Terminal 4 building. Airlines: Around 75 airlines fly to some 140 different destinations. Major carriers include Air France, American Airlines, British Airways, Lufthansa and United Airlines. Parking: There are parking lots and garages located close to each terminal as well as a cheap long-term car park (P6) which is connected to the terminals by a free shuttle service. Depending on which car park you choose, prices range from EUR 1-2 per hour and EUR 5-20 per day. Changing terminals: The terminals are linked by mobile walkways and free shuttle buses. Facilities: The airport contains 12 restaurants and snack bars, countless shops and other facilities like play areas, a medical centre, post office, currency exchange and conference rooms. Visitors can also watch take-offs and landings from the observation platform or view the impressive model in Terminal 1. Transport to and from the airport: The airport is not connected to the metro, but a series of inexpensive express buses run from outside Terminals 1 and 4 to the city centre every 15 minutes. The journey to the Hauptbahnhof (central station) takes no more than half an hour. A taxi ride to the city centre should take approximately 30 minutes and cost in the region of EUR 15. The airport lies close to the A7 motorway (Schnelsen-Nord exit). Review © 2009, Wcities |
