Visitors to Hamburg cannot complain about lack of accommodation. The city contains practically every kind of lodging, from exclusive hotels with every imaginable luxury to plain but functional rooms close to major transport links. Over 250 hotels and boarding houses offer a total of 30,000 beds, all of which are badly needed, as over 4 million tourists, trade fair visitors and business people stay in Hamburg every year.

Unrivaled Convenience

Many hotels are strategically situated near airports, railway stations and main roads. Airport Hotel Hamburg, for example, offers banqueting facilities, an art gallery and a fine restaurant, but at more than EUR 100 for a single room, it is firmly fixed in the upper price bracket. Kock's Hotel Garni and the Dorint are also located close to the airport, while Alsterkrug Hotel is just a few minutes drive along the road into town. Hotel Rex and Hotel Helgoland are good bets if you are travelling along the A7 motorway in the north, as too are Hotel Restaurant Engel and Hotel Ausspann. In the south, establishments like Hotel Ambassador, Elbbrücken Hotel or the Forum, Hamburg's second largest hotel, offer a comfortable night's rest. If you are heading east, then Hotel Berlin or Hotel Eggers near the A24 motorway are good choices.

The Hauptbahnhof (main station) is, as you would expect, surrounded by hotels. Examples include the Europäischer Hof, Hotel Terminus, Maritim Hotel Reichshof Hamburg, Hotel Fürst Bismarck and Steen's Hotel. Hotel Metro Merkur is a good and inexpensive alternative. Many other establishments are located within walking distance of the station, such as Hotel Alte Wache and Hotel City House, an old, atmospheric town house.

Fixtures of Old Hamburg

Many visitors prefer to stay in the picturesque hotels and guest houses near Lake Alster. The luxurious Kempinski Hotel Atlantic is one of the finest examples and has been a fixture in Hamburg's hotel scene for over 90 years. Other excellent places in this part of town include the tiny Aussen Alster Hotel, the modern Wedina, the charming Travel Charme Hotel Bellevue and the traditional Prem with its lovely garden and first class restaurant. The comfortable Crowne Plaza Hotel is also nearby.

The Rotherbaum

The district of Rotherbaum on the western bank of Lake Alster contains the exclusive Hotel Inter-Continental Hamburg, which is home to the Spielbank Hamburg casino and offers wonderful views of the lake. Upmarket Eppendorf is home to the Abtei, a fantastic villa with beautiful gardens. Other recommended places in the area are Hotel-Pension Am Nonnenstieg with apartments and bed & breakfast, the Japanese-style Nippon Hotel, and the apartments on Klosterallee or Oberstraße. The Elysée, Hotel Amsterdam and Hotel Vorbach are located slightly further south, near the university and exhibition centre.

Here on Business

Many trade fair visitors choose to stay at the Radisson SAS, which offers direct access to the CCH, the Planten un Blomen park and Hamburg's 'highest nightclub'. Other decent alternatives are Hotel Baseler Hof on the Esplanade, Hotel Oper and Hotel Norge.

Downtown

Big names in the city centre include the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten and Park Hotel Hyatt. The latter boasts its own nightclub (the 'Shark Club'), a large health and fitness centre and two restaurants. Other quality lodgings include the Renaissance Hotel in the beautiful Broschek-Haus and the Steigenberger, located on an island in the Neustadt which hosts the Fleetinsel Festival every summer.

For Nightouts

Hotel Hafen Hamburg towers high above the Landungsbrücken, close to the River Elbe and Reeperbahn. The nearby district of Altona is home to Hotel St.Annen and Best Western Raphael Hotel Altona. Hotel Imperial (also home to the 'Imperial Theater') faces the Operettenhaus and is an ideal starting point for night-owls. The same is true of Hotel Ibis Altona near Altona railway station. Entertainment is also guaranteed at Hotel am Holstenwall. Situated near the city centre, the hotel has two excellent restaurants and its own theatre, the 'Neues Theater am Holstenwall'. Across the street, you can go for a walk around the historic city fortifications, the Wallanlagen, or visit the Museum of Local History.

Beautiful Villas, Leafy Parks

The picturesque district of Blankenese is known for its beautiful villas, leafy parks and exclusive hotels and restaurants. Places like Hotel Louis C. Jacob, Strandhotel and Hotel Blankenese are always popular.

International Selection

Several international hotel chains have branches in Hamburg: Ibis, for example, has hotels in Altona (Ibis Alster) and Wandsbek. 3-star Novotels are located in the north, south and west of the city. There are also several motels in town. The wacky sixties 'Motel 21' in Horn has provided the backdrop for many a German TV show, while Motel Hamburg on Hoheluftchaussee caters for an international clientele.

Budget Travelers

Among the city's youth hostels, mention should be made of Jugendgästehaus Auf dem Stintfang. Located on a hill near Landungsbrücken, the hostel offers lovely views of the river and is extremely close to the city centre. The Jugendgästehaus Horner Rennbahn has an open fireplace (great on cold winter evenings!) and is ideally located for horse-lovers and punters with the race-track next door. The independently-run Jugendpark Langenhorn offers great sports facilities, while many backpackers head for Instant Sleep in Schanzenviertel, which has its own laundrette and internet café.

Special Discounts

Whichever place you choose, it is always advisable to enquire beforehand about reduced weekend rates or special offers which include tickets for the theatre, a musical or a trade fair. You should also bear in mind that many hotels boost their rates at peak times, such as during the holidays and major trade fairs.

This elegant street has an interesting history. It was commissioned to be built by the city (1827-30) on the model of Unter den Linden (Under the Lime Trees) in Berlin, but only one of its original houses still stands today, namely No. 37. It is mentioned as being the home of Hans Castorp's grandfather in Thomas Mann's novel The Magic Mountain. No. 29 has a paneled room which is still its original state from around the turn of the century.

The museum's extensive collection ranges from artefacts dating from the city's foundation in the Middle Ages to visions of the future. The main subjects covered are the harbour, transport and trade, although there are also interesting sections dealing with the constitutional, cultural and social history of the city. The Great Fire of 1842 is documented in an informative and evocative way, as is the virtual ruin of the city during the two world wars. There are numerous models of the city, its churches, railways and ships. The life-size model of the steamer on the second floor is a must.

If you've still got the energy after a night out, you can visit the nearby fish market early on a Sunday morning. A drink at the hotel bar is the perfect way to end the day. The impressive Landungsbrücken and Old Elbe Tunnel are probably Hamburg's most popular picture postcard motifs. Built in 1906-10 by Ludwig Raabe and Otto Wöhlecke, the 420 meters long building features two towers of differing heights, as well as a number of bridge-shaped passageways and copper domes. Several piers lead out to floating pontoons in the middle of the Elbe. These were once used as mooring points for the galleons which frequented the city, but are now used primarily by sightseeing boats.

Located on the banks of Lake Alster, Hotel Bellevue is perfect for guests who like walking, sailing or simply relaxing and watching the boats sail by. The hotel restaurant boasts great views, while the bar features live bands on Thursdays and Fridays. Rooms are comfortable and pleasantly furnished, and the city centre and Congress Centre are easy to reach by public transport.
