A Table

Popular, comfortable restaurant
Dorotheenstraße 33
Hamburg, Hamburg 22301
Germany
+49 (0)40 280 7698
You'll be able to eat high quality and luxurious morsels here, such as caviar and oysters. Non-fish dishes are also available; this place has a very creative kitchen! All this immediately makes up for any dissatisfaction you may feel about the crowded restaurant or the occasionally rushed staff. The little basement restaurant is located in a corner building. It is pleasantly lit, and despite the extravaganza and odd hectic moment, the atmosphere is mostly comfortable and relaxed.

A'Shamra

Syrian-Lebanese restaurant
Rentzelstraße 50
Hamburg, Hamburg 20146
Germany
+49 (0)40 45 4975
The A´Shamra is a Syrian-Lebanese restaurant near the university. It has North African and Middle Eastern specialties, which are quite unusual by Hamburg standards. Every Friday night belly-dancing provides a special and colourful attraction for the guests within the otherwise mainly white room, which is decorated with Oriental accessories. The clientele is a good mixture of students and businessmen. The Mazza-plates with sometimes over 30 appetizer variations are a must. This starter can also be delivered to your home along with unleavened bread for groups of ten or more people. The same applies for several vegetable dishes, and hot meals like filled lamb on rice, for example. The tender kebab with mince meat skewers is also recommended. An Arabian coffee with interesting spices rounds the meal off nicely.

Folks in Hamburg like to experiment with their food - the restaurants cater to a variety of tastes, especially to those involving fusion food. Artisan is one such joint, serving interesting tapa-style dishes in an informal atmosphere. The locals apparently like it, for the place is often full. Evenings find people dressing for glamor, and this spirit is reflected by the restaurant. Elaborate white tablecloths and seven-course menus turn up in all their splendor. In a city where track suits have experienced a revival, it is only fitting that there should be a rustic pub, full of seventies charm, which serves up traditional pub meals and plenty of north German beer for the locals. The menu contains the likes of rump steak, Bauernfrühstuck (savoury omelettes) and bacon pancakes. The At Nali is located near the campus. Hamburg´s oldest Turkish restaurant has offered classic dishes from its local cuisine since 1968. The owner has already published two books on Turkish cooking. The interior is very unusual and rustic. Saddles and cartwheels are part of the decoration, as well as a tiled floor. A nice meal here can be combined with a visit to the English theatre or the Warner Village cinemas. Lots of typical decor from Anatolia like pictures, tapestry and pottery create a cosy atmosphere. That´s why many guests like to stay on for a while after they have finished their meal. In summer, you can also dine outside. It's not just students who come here to relax a little from life´s hectic moments with some nice cake or a filled croissant and a look at the newspaper. Despite a rather plain interior-a long bar and a few stand-up tables with high benches-the Café Aramon seems to be like an oasis when you enter. Along with rock and soul music at a pleasant volume, you can have an excellent large breakfast here. There are various options-vegetarian, vegan, French, and many more variations can be tried out, so there is always something new on the breakfast table. The rooms are decorated in nice warm hues and they are well aired. But there is more than a perfect breakfast available here. The mixed regulars play boardgames, and there will soon be a computer for internet surfers as well. The owner is also planning to have readings, exhibitions and concerts here. The Miller is a pleasant place to go with reasonable prices and a nice crowd. Longdrinks are only half price on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday.

This café and restaurant on a discarded Elbe ferry in the harbour-museum at Oevelgönne has both regional cuisine and a view of the river Elbe. The ferry with the café is located between the old ships and the steam crane in the harbour-museum. In the summer the roof can be taken off for an even better view. If you don´t get seasick you will enjoy dining here, but it can get a bit rough. Aboard, everything from breakfast, fish dishes with herring variations and hearty plain cooking, to coffee, tea and cake in the afternoon, and even beer and other beverages for the late night guests, is available at reasonable prices. On Sundays from 11a-2p there is a sumptuous brunch for EUR 12.50.

The Cafe Oriental is as colorful as its surroundings and invites you to stop and have a cup of coffee on a shopping tour along the in-scene shops of Marktstraße. You can even have breakfast here until 3p, and not just on Sundays. The scent of joss sticks, which is almost omni-present throughout the entire neighborhood, becomes more intense here and creates an exotic atmosphere along with a number of Oriental accessories. All kinds of different people feel at home here, you will see old and young hippies as well as punks with their four legged companions. But as a normal person you are also welcome to stay a while and try one of the several coffee variations or choose a bite from the varied menu at the cafe.

This open-air café certainly lives up to its name (meaning 'beautiful views'), situated as it is in the heart of the botanical gardens. It has a spacious terrace and is a café, beer garden and club, all in one. Visitors can come here for breakfast (or a buffet brunch on Saturdays); for coffee and cake in the afternoon; for dinner in the evening or groove to the sound of house and soul at night. There is an 'after work club' at 7p every other Thursday.

Canal-side café in the park

+49 (0)40 270 6274
There is always a cheerful crowd at the busy Café Sommerterrassen. They stage live music on a more or less daily basis and the ambience has a certain Brazilian flair. It is for the most part trendy and high society regulars who frequent this cafe. Such a beautifully located café on the Stadtpark canal does not have particularly reasonable prices, but has other attractive features-customers can watch canoeists go by from the terrace and if the place is just too packed, hire a canoe from the café's own berth and explore Hamburg's canals. 'Sommerterrassen' (Summer terraces) is a more than apt name, as in good weather it is a perfect spot in which to soak up some sun (usually until at least 8pm) and a beautiful sunset.

Fish and different varieties of seafood are the firm favourites on the menu at Casa Algarve. You could also try the chicken or lamb without having any regrets, but the lobster and red snapper, to name just a couple of dishes, are unbeatable. The vegetables are always fresh and crunchy, and the lovely Portuguese wines are not overpriced. A cosy Mediterranean ambience with fishing nets on the walls and a scent of herbs and garlic makes you feel like you're in the Algarve the minute you enter the restaurant. There could hardly be a more romantic location for a bar. The Cliff is situated in a park on the banks of lake Alster. In the evenings, this is the place to go for Hamburg's young and professional, which unfortunately means that all the seats can quickly be taken. Not a surprise really, considering the scenery-rowers and sailing boats floating past, joggers, sun-worshippers, people out for a walk and all this framed in a beautiful sunset. The crowd seem very approachable and are out simply to enjoy themselves. This is a good place for the famous second date, but also for a night out in a group. Jean Paul once said: "An optimist is a man who orders clams without a penny in his pockets, hoping to pay for them with a pearl". But optimists, be warned: it is highly unlikely that you'll find pearls inside Cölln´s clams. You will experience a real feast for the palate, however. It comes as no surprise that clams are the seafood stars of Cölln´s kitchen, but there are also other culinary highlights such as freshly caught lobster. This fine fish restaurant is a Hamburg institution. Well-off Hanseatic people are seated in six private rooms which can hold up to twelve people. They enjoy the best and finest fish creations; the majority of fish here is bought fresh several times every day. Unfortunately, the future of the traditional house is at present uncertain.

Imagine enjoying fresh and deliciously prepared fish within the confines of a real ship! Das Feuerschiff - once a light-ship used as a floating lighthouse in the English Channel, offers you this unique experience and much more. Apart from savoring the seafood delights, you can also be part of the jam sessions that are conducted here. If you're lucky enough, you can catch the cabaret show, which is hosted once in a while. On the regular eventless days, you could simply enjoy the boats chugging by while you leisurely sip on your white beer.

Leisure and holiday atmosphere
Hofweg 103
Hamburg, Hamburg 22085

The Cafe Fiedler´s has an excellent location on the tributary of the river Alster. Ferries pass by here on their way to the Mühlenkamp berth and you can drink a cup of coffee with a lovely view of the waterfront. When the sun is shining you can sit outside on a spacious terrace, and when it's cold a seat in the gallery with its amazing view is recommended. The basement is also comfortable. But all the seats are occupied and a visit to this busy café is not the general idea of peace and quiet.

The most frequent subject of conversation around here? Well, we're in the middle of Hamburg's film district, so take a guess! A popular meeting place for producers, directors and students, this café is also frequented by visitors to the nearby Zeise cinema. What could be better than analysing the film over a glass of fine wine and a tasty plate of Franco-German food?

The Fish Kitchen belongs to the Fischereihafen-Restaurant and offers the same kind of exclusive fish and seafood cuisine. The arrangement of the food on the plates is a feast for the eyes. The fish is freshly prepared in a corner of the dining-room, so you can watch the chefs at work. There's a certain price to be paid for the excellent ingredients and service, of course. The rich meet the beautiful at this restaurant, and accordingly, the service provided here can be described as having a discreet Hanseatic charm. The staff can recommend a suitable wine to accompany your meal.

This restaurant has been in the neighborhood for about ninety years and still attracts the same kind of crowd. Guessing from its name, 'fish' - caught and cooked to perfection is the specialty here. With creepers forming a graceful trellis within the dining area, you really might not regret missing out on an alfresco seating on the terrace. The decor is kept very basic, so that nothing spoils the beautiful views of the bay. Filled with tourists and locals alike, this is a great place to taste authentic Hamburger Kümmel (crabs), sip on German 'biere' and gaze away into the horizon!

This is a health conscious place in one of Hamburg´s finest neighbourhoods, namely Harvestehude/Rotherbaum. Everything is rich in vitamins, low in fat and freshly prepared. In a somewhat uncomfortable atmosphere, salads, wok and sushi dishes are offered amongst other things. A different Quick-Lunch is offered every day-this is served within ten minutes for rushed and stressed people from the media industry, but not only for those, of course. The meals can be enjoyed with freshly pressed fruit juices.

If you've had enough of the allegedly stiff and formal Hanseatic people, and feel you could do with proper Bavarian food and ambience for a change, why not try the Franziskaner. The waitresses wear traditional Dirndl dresses and the interior is very impressively decorated in authentic Bavarian style. There are rumours that real Bavarian guests sometimes spontaneously start singing folk songs at the bar. Rich and tasty meals like roast pork and veal sausage with pickled cabbage, pretzels and dumplings are on the menu here. They can be washed down with the typical Maß (1 litre) of real Bavarian beer - even in Hamburg!

Gazoline

Pub with wicker-work furniture
Bahrenfelder Straße 132
Hamburg, Hamburg 22765

+49 (0)40 8510 8466
The Gazoline manages to remain stylish, yet uncomplicated. During the day it is mainly a café with cappuccinos and delicious cakes, and in the evening it becomes a pub with fresh draught beer. In summer you can sit outside on the pavement and watch the shoppers browsing on Bahrenfelder Straße. The Gazoline looks tiny from the outside - there is just enough room for one table and some armchairs at the window. The café is not that small at all, though, but rather oblong. If you pass the bar with the stand-up seats, you will get to the larger back room of the café-bar. There are candles and fresh flowers on the tables, and awfully comfy wicker-work chairs. This might seem a bit strange, but it is never boring-this is the right place for a pleasant conversation.

One will come along this pub only if one is actually looking for it. The 5 minutes walk from the main station are definitely worth the effort because the menu offers a small but unusual and affordable selection of dishes. The Geelhaus is located in a rather quiet street but is connected with the Lange Reihe by a passageway. The wooden floor is really old, the floor-boards are creaking accordingly. In contrast, the yellow walls bring some freshness to the room. Rather unique are the lamps that are made of welded scrap. Every dish is freshly prepared. Therefore one might to have to wait a bit longer. Some dishes combine ingredients in an unusual but delicious way: e.g. spaghetti with cashew-sauce, or chicken-salad with orange-slices and green pepper.

While on a walk around the Alster it is worth making a stop at this ice-cream parlour. Even if the interior design with its mint walls, red upholstery and heavy picture frames is not to everybody's taste, the ice-cream makes up for it. More than forty different ice-cream flavours are available; the selection of sundaes is also quite diverse. A speciality is the Eis-Fondue for two persons, a portion of ice-cream flambé. This café and bar is ideally located between the two popular neighbourhoods Eimsbüttel and the Schanzenviertel, so it doesn't come as a surprise that it has become well frequented, particularly by people with artistic professions. Some of them come here in the afternoon to enjoy a café au lait whilst flipping through the pages of one of the designer magazines lying about. In summer you can even sit outside in the shade. Others simply stay here from breakfast until closing time, and this is not unusual as the food and drink are great and relatively reasonably priced. The nice, relaxed atmosphere and the not too obtrusive Seventies interior of the Gloria can easily make people feel at home.

The menu has traditional Greek cuisine with meat and fish dishes, gnocchi and soufflés. The meals are carefully prepared by skilled hands, so the results are a feast for both the eyes and the palate. The waiter can recommend a fine suitable wine with every meal.

The smallest bar on Kiez

This, the smallest bar on Kiez, is always packed. Admittedly, it holds but a handful of people and on weekend and during the summer months the crowd can get so large that the pub takes over the whole pavement outside. The name (meaning 'house of cure') might not be taken too literally at night, but on sunny afternoons it is a great place for a cup of coffee and is the perfect antidote for work stress. To keep the decor interesting, the room is regularly redesigned and given a new lick of paint.

The chef specializes in exquisite regional cuisine with an international touch, while the owner has made sure that the assortment of wine is equally exclusive. Since the Seventies this French restaurant in Winterhude has provided classic Provencal cuisine in a cosy atmosphere. The rather rustic interior makes you think of southern Fance and attracts guests of every age group. They come for the exquisite cuisine. A lot of the regulars are obviously well-to-do. There are excellent set meals on the menu, as well as Provencal specialities like game and fish dishes and the famous bouillabaisse fish soup. They all come in large helpings. The chéf uses fresh herbs and spices to create the individual taste. A new Beaujolais is also always available and highly recommended by the friendly staff.

One of Hamburg's smallest cocktail bars, Red Dog is an insider tip and a wonderful place to watch the sun go down over the city. Nobody seems to mind that the pint-sized building- formerly a public toilet-has only extremely limited seating. The bar is known for its 'Mintmeyer', a unique drink which is the specialty of the house. Please note that Red Dog is only open with any regularity during the summer and that it can be quite difficult to find a parking space as the bar is located near the Krugkoppelbrücke Bridge in the heart of the city. The American restaurant in the Rothenbaum neighbourhood offers a large choice of Tex-Mex dishes in a bright and friendly ambience. The wood and glass front of the Red Tree, as well as its beautiful arched door actually create an inviting Southern States drugstore atmosphere. The menu covers much more than a choice of burgers, chicken wings and spare ribs. Among the starters there are salads, tortillas with roast duck and hot sauce, and black bean soup. The main courses range from catfish and turkey to poultry and loin of beef dishes. Lunch specials change frequently.

A top hotel needs a top restaurant and the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten has hit the jackpot with Haerlin. Decorated in feudal style, this place has firmly established itself at the top of Hamburg's culinary premier league. Huge windows provide great views over beautiful Lake Alster, a piano player tinkles in the background and the wine list is simply unbeatable. All this could easily deflect interest from the food - if it weren't for the creative and refined dishes rustled up by chef Hans-Peter Engels, holder of numerous Gault Millaut and Michelin awards.

The Soares-Vasconcelos family leaves designer interiors to other restaurateurs. Their Porto is rather rustic and serves simple, traditional food. Yet despite, or even because of this, many people consider the Porto one of the best Portuguese restaurants in town. The cook transforms the simplest ingredients into the most delicious delicacies. This place offers excellent value, and you'll be lucky to get a seat here at the weekend. If you dare, try the grilled octopus with potatoes and salad.

This restaurant, which specializes in excellent fish dishes, is located near the ferry terminal on the River Elbe. For starters, a container ship might chug past your table and during the main course the passengers on a cruise ship might wave at you: the view is simply fantastic. The mixed seafood platter is highly recommended and so are the lobster and regional specialties, but the high quality offered here certainly has its price. Located directly on the banks of the River Elbe, the Elbterrassen is wonderfully romantic and is a great place to relax and watch the ships leisurely approach and leave the harbour. Evenings are also atmospheric, as the terrace overlooks the harbour, and you can watch the dock workers hurriedly going about their business. Isn't the first beer after work that much more pleasurable when you can watch other people who are still working? Although busy, it is normally easy to find a table.

Rocco is a popular Italian restaurant with many regulars who appreciate its lively atmosphere and like to sit and chat. You had better go elsewhere for a romantic dinner, because space is rather limited here, despite the recently opened extra café room, and the waitresses and waiters are buzzing to and fro. Those waiting for a table are often given a complimentary drink. In summer, you can also dine outside, in front of the corner building. Apart from a fixed menu, there are daily specials and great large pizzas with a crispy base and a unique taste. The way the toppings are arranged by the pizza baker serves as a good example of true Italian passion. The pasta dishes are also recommended, and all the food is very moderately priced.

Expect some hoity-toity folk at this eatery, which contrasts starkly with the streets outside. Retro 60's décor transports you back in time and puts you in the mood to party. The food is German, with a few Mediterranean influences – quite novel – which is, essentially, the crowd-puller. It would help to be familiar with German, or to have a knowledgeable pal around to guide you through the menu, which, once deciphered, can prove to be both intriguing and satisfying.

The Ti Breizh is a Breton crêperie on the Nikolai canal. Flour, water, milk, salt and eggs are turned into delicious crêpes and galettas here on a hot iron plate. In the "House of Brittany" you can dine on two floors, seated on straw chairs at plain wooden tables. Exquisite cans of fish and bottles of cider serve as decoration here, but the latter can also be consumed in typical pottery cups. After a lovely starter with tuna or paté and salad, true experts enjoy their crêpes or galettas with nothing but a little butter. But there is a large choice of beautiful sweet or tasty fillings to try out as well. You can even book a holiday to Brittany here!

Tut-Ench-Amun

Egyptian restaurant in Winterhude
Alsterdorfer Straße 85
Hamburg, Hamburg 22999
Germany
+49 (0)40 5131 0622
The pharaoh himself did not grow very old, but his famous name has lasted throughout the centuries and can be found once again at this Egyptian restaurant in Winterhude. A lovely pharaoh's throne at the entrance is a special attraction at the Tut-Ench-Amun, which has been decorated with typical Egyptian accessories. There are traditional Egyptian dishes on the menu. You ought to be careful with the starters, because they come in large portions. The starter platter named after the pharaoh is best shared by two people in order to leave space for one of the main courses. The grilled fish and meat are recommended.

Unicafé Libresso

Modern campus café
Edmund-Siemers-Allee 1
Hamburg, Hamburg 20146
Germany
+49 (0)40 4149 8155
In former times one had to walk through a second-hand bookshop in order to reach the Café Libresso, and in good weather the guests used to gather on a nice old terrace. But a lot has changed since the café moved into the new wing-building of the main University building. There still is a second-hand bookshop next door, and the formerly somewhat shabby coffee-handout which has changed into a stylish city-café, still can´t complain about a lack of visitors. The regulars have changed a bit - less going-to-be teachers, more going-to-be lawyers - but you still pick up the inexpensive hot drinks and biscuits yourself and nicely put your used dishes onto a little trolley afterwards. The café with the stylish ambience makes for a nice location for a chat, and you can also read and study a bit here, when it is less busy.

Ventana

Asian and European cuisine
Grindelhof 77
Hamburg, Hamburg 20146
Germany
+49 (0)40 45 6588
Although located in the middle of the university district, this place is not crowded with students, which can probably be put down to the prices. Admittedly, the waiters are more attentive to regular customers and VIPs, but eating here as a 'normal' guest is also excellent. The friendly service and great meals make up for the somewhat cool interior design. The dishes are inspired mixtures of European and Asian cuisine and can be ordered as starters or main courses depending on how hungry you are. Not everybody appreciates the extra service charge.

This friendly Italian restaurant is a firm favourite with business people, students and families alike, not least because most dishes are inexpensive and offer great value for money. Pizza costs from EUR 5.25; lasagne from EUR 7.25; antipasti from the buffet EUR 8; fillet of salmon in herb sauce EUR 14.75 and desserts from EUR 4.

Traditional and contemporary Japanese specialities

http://www.wa-yo.de/deutsch/wa...
As well as prominent local figures, there are also numerous Japanese people among the guests - a sure sign of Wa-Yo's appeal. Located in the Nippon Hotel in one of Hamburg's most exclusive districts, the restaurant offers much, much more than your typical sushi roll. The chef rustles up a variety of traditional and modern Japanese specialities, including sukiyaki and beef hotpot, both of which are highly recommended. Decorated in typically minimalistic style, Wa-Yo is generally very busy and prices tend to lean towards the top end of the scale.

Warsteiner Elbspeicher

Nice cuisine and a view of the harbour

Germany

The Warsteiner Elbspeicher is located directly on the river Elbe. In the immediate neighbourhood of the Fischmarkt and the modern shopping temple Stilwerk it makes for a good location after a nice walk along the river or a shopping tour. In good weather you can dine on the open-air terrace and watch whatever is happening on the Elbe. But the grand harbour view can also be enjoyed from inside, and especially in typical Hamburg "Schmuddelwetter" (rainy weather) it is very cosy here. At the Elbspeicher, traditional Hamburg cuisine and tasty international dishes are available at slightly higher level prices. On Saturdays and Sundays there is a nice breakfast from 10am (9am Sun) to midday.

http://www.weite-welt.de/
The Weite Welt (wide world) begins where the Große Freiheit (big freedom) ends, and that´s in a former fish canning factory. Here, hidden in a backyard, a first class bistro with a cocktail bar can be found. It mainly attracts young night-clubbers with a discerning palate and suitable income. Fresh fish is delivered three times a week and you can enjoy fish dishes in a relaxed, sophisticated atmosphere. The house´s wine cellar is filled with an impressive 50,000 bottles and the wine list (40 pages long) leaves nothing to ask for. An oasis in the red light district.

The name of this small but exclusive gourmet restaurant ('The White House'), has nothing to do with the Oval Office. Idylically situated at the Museum Harbour Övelgönne, the restaurant offers beautiful views of the old boats and the River Elbe. The menu consists of sophisticated international cuisine with an emphasis on European meat and fish dishes. The clientele is a mixture of young and old, and on warm summer evenings, the place basks in a Mediterranean glow.

Winterhuder Kaffeehaus

Coffee and tea from all over the world
Winterhuder Markt 16
Hamburg, Hamburg 22299
Germany
+49 (0)40 47 8200
The Winterhuder Kaffeehaus is located near the river banks of the Alster, halfway to the city park. It is an example of what can happen if one tries to establish a gay café outside the usual scene quarters. Everybody in the neighbourhood likes it, too, so now it is frequented by a rather mixed crowd. Inside you will find a Friesian ambience. The walls, chairs, and the bar are crafted from wood in the typical coastal fashion and the walls are painted white. In the summertime, there are also some chairs and tables outside on the Winterhuder Marketplace. Optically the place has little to offer, the city-developing of the 60's and 70's has left its traces. But you can still enjoy the fresh air under the sunshade. Although it is called a coffee-house, it also offers a large choice of tea. The portions for breakfast fill you well and prices. Later on the gateaux, or salads respectively are recommended.

Wollenberg

Classic and modern cuisine on the Außenalster
Alsterufer 35
Hamburg, Hamburg 20354
Germany
+49 (0)40 450 1850
Top chef Michael Wollenberg, who has been awarded international prizes and honours for his cooking, offers exclusive cuisine in the extraordinary atmosphere of his beautiful white restaurant in the villa district on the shores of the Alster lake. The first class modern interior of the turn-of-the-century building might seem somewhat cold - but that could be because the restaurant is sometimes not as full as it could be. At night it is less quiet and cool, when the Wollenberg turns into a high society nightclub. The meals and wines, of which there is a large selection available, are excellent. A visit here is most definitely an experience.

Situated opposite the Speicherstadt and close to St Katharinen Church and the Customs Museum, Zippelhaus was built in 1890-91 and is an usual architectural mixture of a tenant house and a Kontor house (old north German warehouse). As such, it reflects the social changes within the city and the growth of trade and industry. The house now contains a first-class restaurant with attentive service and great gourmet cuisine. The fish dishes are particularly good and the wine list excellent. A pianist provides pleasant background music.

This fine, handsomely furnished and pleasantly lit gourmet restaurant lacks nothing: the chef rustles up splendid meals; there is a great selection of superior tipples and a pianist tinkles in the background. The only downside is that it can be fairly empty at lunchtime. The fish dishes are excellent; the prices appropriate for this standard.

Zirkus Erich

The bigger, the better
Erichstraße 19
Hamburg, Hamburg 20359
Germany

This eatery thinks big – spacious, with deep, plush leather seats and striking mirrors, it give the impression of being much larger than it actually is. The spirit of generosity extends to the patrons as well. Hooks are provided to hang up coats and bar stools come armed with footrests. Pure white tablecloths set off the dark wall panels, lending a sophisticated air to the dining area. One can feast on a variety of Italian and Asian food; the menu changes twice a week. The staff is polite and move about unobtrusively. If you're planning a celebration, book the function room - it can accommodate about 500 people.

This bright and friendly vegetarian restaurant and café has a very pleasant atmosphere. The good man responsible for its name is always present in a large picture on the wall. The regulars are usually health-food lovers who come here for a good exotic meal and a chat in the nice ambience. The trade fair center and the fairground are close by, and there is a lovely green inner courtyard with open-air seating. Tofu and soybean dishes are firm favorites among the meals here. All the food is prepared with lots of loving care. There is a large choice of vegetable dishes and tasty set meals. Suitable wines and beers, as well as fruit and vegetable juices are also available.

Here good German cuisine can be enjoyed. Although no gourmet dishes are served in the Wattkorn, very good plain cooking, including crispy duck and fish cuisine of the highest quality is. Behind the restaurant, which is located in a thatched house whose dining room is decorated in a comfortable rustic country style, there is a wild flower garden. Next door you'll also find a little zoo with pets and farm animals which may be touched and fed. Wattkorn is particularly suitable for celebrations of all kinds.

This is the perfect place to stop for refreshments after a leisurely walk around the atmospheric Museumshafen (Museum Harbour). This unobtrusive little gem is situated beside the water and looks more like a kiosk than a restaurant from the outside. But don't judge the book by its cover-the atmosphere is warm, the clientele friendly and the beer good. The River Elbe is also close at hand. Sitting here over a drink or two, it quickly becomes clear what it is that makes Hamburg so special.

This restaurant is located near the slaughterhouse. The menu mainly offers meat dishes, including the kind that satisfies even the biggest of appetites. Amongst the popular side dishes are fried potatoes, and it is advisable to order a shot of liquor at the end of the meal to give your stomach a helping hand. The photographs on the Schlachterbörse's walls prove that many celebrities have already been here. In addition to rich and tasty meals, there are also some stylish creations and lighter snacks on the menu, even the odd tasty crustacean can be found here. Hot meals are available until late at night, for example a 200g rump steak is up for grabs!

Övelgönner Fährhaus is located at the museum harbour, and it is best reached by busline 112. After an excellent meal you can go for a walk along the beautiful Elbuferweg or visit the old ships. The front of the Fährhaus is white and green, and with its red roof it looks like a Friesian house. The best summertime tables with a great view of the river Elbe are on the terrace. But it is also very comfortable inside particularly on the first floor, where several separate sections provide a perfect ambience for small festive occasions. Fish lovers will enjoy the traditional Hamburg meals. There are several variations on local fish including popular regional recipes. The sophisticated cuisine is rather expensive, however. Plaice, herring and sole are always there, but salmon and crustaceans are also available.
