Bagels - now in Hamburg |
Grindelallee 32 Univiertel Hamburg, Hamburg 20146 Germany +49 (0)40 4146 6610 http://bagel-park.de |
Bagels, a New York speciality, are now also available in Hamburg. The newly opened Bagel Park is located in the university district and so is mostly frequented by students. Bagel fans participating in a congress at the CCH will not regret the five minutes walk. The shop is modern and light, except for two comfortable old sofas and a stucco ceiling. The bagels are served with different fillings, for example turkey, salmon, roast beef, chilli and vegetarian. Good Morning Bagels are also available. Prices range from EUR 1.4-3.4. There are various sorts of coffee, tea, and juices also from EUR 1.5-2.7. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bar, restaurant and pub with cinema posters on the wall |
Grindelhof 14a Hamburg, Hamburg 20146 Germany +49 (0)40 45 7771 |
Jack Nicholson looks out over the black and white floor from his place on the wall alongside Kirk Douglas, Charlie Chaplin and other greats—most fitting for a place which is so cinema orientated. The Abaton is, however, far more than an typical pub-it is also a bar, restaurant and (student) meeting place. The Abaton cinema is just around the corner and shows sophisticated international films. Gay and gorgeous people |
Schmilinskystraße 19 St. Georg Hamburg, Hamburg 20099 Germany +49 (0)40 24 6083 |
The Bistro is a pub for well off gays. A lot of people find their way to this side street off the Lange Reihe. The room is designed with straight lines and smooth surfaces, plain colours and shiny black, and lies some steps below street level on a street corner. The atmosphere is always quite animated. Seats are available at the bar, tables and also at some ordinary tables with comfortable leather benches. In line with the furniture, the waiters' uniform is black and white. Most guests drop in for a drink, although there is also a small menu with soups, salads and dishes that change weekly. The gateaux are usually home-made or prepared by a confectioner. Great location on Lake Alster |
Harvestehuder Weg 1b Hamburg, Hamburg 20148 Germany +49 (0)40 410 3525 |
Harvestehude-one of Hamburg's most exclusive districts-is a popular place for sunbathing, picnicking and socialising on the banks of Lake Alster. The upper-class locals enjoy relaxing on the chaise lounges, while numerous office workers and business people spend their short lunch breaks here. Despite the bustle at this busy café, there is always time for some sun and a bit of socializing. Even if you aren't in the mood to catch some rays, a visit to this popular little café on the pier is still highly recommended. The view is included in the prices. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nice spot for a breather |
Adolphsbrücke 7 Hamburg, Hamburg 20457 Germany +49 (0)40 36 7740 http://www.brauhaus-joh-albrec... |
The Brauhaus Joh. Albrecht is a real pub, complete with barrels, beer tables, and copper kettles. It is quite cosy with an unusual ambience. The view of the Alster Canal can be described as unique, as can the two house beers: the dark Kupfer and the light Messing. This is a pleasant place in which to relax after browsing the shops and braving the bustle of the city. On their first visit, many people discover that the Brauhaus is well worth revisiting. Cakes and breakfast near the campus |
Grindelallee 148 Hamburg, Hamburg 20146 Germany |
The Backwahn Cafe is located in the lively university district close to the campus. It has no connection to the Baghwan, despite the similarity in name, but offers excellent homemade bakery products. Unsurprisingly the Backwahn is a haunt of young people and students, but elderly Hamburgers can also be spotted here. Changing decorations with pictures and scultures can be admired here. As the place is always pretty busy, you sometimes have to stand at one of the tables. Apart from the gorgeous gateaus and cakes there are several different small or large breakfasts ranging from sweet to tasty. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A cup of coffee and a magazine |
Wohlwillstraße 49 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 4318 2112 http://www.caffe-latte.de/ |
This is one of Wohlwillstraes nice little inviting gastronomic businesses. From the inside you can watch the streetlife through the former shops large windows, while on the other hand plants keep people from looking in. In good weather there is also enough room at the entrance to sit outside. With one of the cafe's magazines in one hand and a good cup of coffee in the other you can spend brilliant lazy afternoons here. Those who like to sleep can still order one of the four breakfast variations later on, enjoy the daily lunch special or some delicious antipasti. A freshly made fruit cocktail wakes you up and makes for a good start to the day. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A bit of Portugal on the Grindelallee |
Grindelallee 44 Hamburg, Hamburg 20146 Germany +49 (0)40 4503 9775 |
There are people who say that a Portuguese coffee is the best you can get. The Café Aramon at Grindelallee is a fine location to prove it. It's not just students who come here to relax a little from life´s hectic moments with some nice cake or a filled croissant and a look at the newspaper. Despite a rather plain interior-a long bar and a few stand-up tables with high benches-the Café Aramon seems to be like an oasis when you enter. That could be because it is so quiet compared to the busy Grindelallee, but the relaxed atmosphere and the friendly staff also contribute to this impression. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A calm and peaceful oasis, this café in the beautiful neighbourhood of Eppendorf is an address that comes highly recommended. If you are looking for Sunday brunch, an afternoon cup of coffee or a place to stop while exploring Lake Alster, Café Leinpfad is always worth a visit. Exotic cafe with a mixed crowd of regulars |

The Cafe Oriental is as colorful as its surroundings and invites you to stop and have a cup of coffee on a shopping tour along the in-scene shops of Marktstraße. You can even have breakfast here until 3p, and not just on Sundays. The scent of joss sticks, which is almost omni-present throughout the entire neighborhood, becomes more intense here and creates an exotic atmosphere along with a number of Oriental accessories. All kinds of different people feel at home here, you will see old and young hippies as well as punks with their four legged companions. But as a normal person you are also welcome to stay a while and try one of the several coffee variations or choose a bite from the varied menu at the cafe. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Canal-side café in the park |
Südring 44 Hamburg, Hamburg 22303 Germany +49 (0)40 270 6274 |
There is always a cheerful crowd at the busy Café Sommerterrassen. They stage live music on a more or less daily basis and the ambience has a certain Brazilian flair. It is for the most part trendy and high society regulars who frequent this cafe. Such a beautifully located café on the Stadtpark canal does not have particularly reasonable prices, but has other attractive features-customers can watch canoeists go by from the terrace and if the place is just too packed, hire a canoe from the café's own berth and explore Hamburg's canals. 'Sommerterrassen' (Summer terraces) is a more than apt name, as in good weather it is a perfect spot in which to soak up some sun (usually until at least 8pm) and a beautiful sunset. People of every age come to this place, among them many gay men. In the summer you can enjoy sitting in the small garden in the backyard, far away from the busy street. The furniture is rather rustic but the guests are far from being old-fashioned. A special attraction of the Café Uhrlaub is a collection of big old clocks hanging on the wall opposite the bar. There is a big choice for breakfast-whether with scrambled eggs, cereal, or rolls and croissants fresh from the oven-everybody will find something among the 12 dishes. For lunch and dinner there are huge French bageuttes and baked pasta, and also different salads. Exquisite cuisine in Teufelsbrück |

This popular restaurant at the Teufelsbrück has large windows looking out on to the exclusive scenery. It offers high-class à la carte cuisine, and is a perfect place for a good cup of coffee and a piece of cake in the afternoon. The extraordinary view of the Elbe and the passing ships is best enjoyed from one of the two terraces. At mealtimes and during the peak season it can become very busy here. From 10am-2.30pm there's an exquisite brunch available. Coffee and juice are included in the price. In the afternoon, cakes and gateaux are on the menu. Hot meals are prepared until 10.30pm. There are excellent main courses with fish or meat and very nice side dishes on the menu, all a bit expensive, but their high quality justifies the price. All the meals here are recommended. On a long nice shopping tour of the city centre shops and arcades you will need a break at some point. The Cappuccino at the Hof-Passage is a good location for such a break. You sit aside from the hectic life and the bustle but you are yet right in the middle of it, as the café and restaurant provides a good view of the restless shoppers. The café is usually very busy, so the noise level is not exactly relaxing. But the menu is very nice. In addition to the hot drink which gave the place its name, there is a choice of sophisticated hot meals to supply you with the energy you need for another round of shopping. This place is a legend. Open for breakfast at 1am, Erika's Eck used to cater for shift workers, but nowadays you will mainly encounter nightclubbers and young folk on a night out, as well as a handful of truckers and taxi drivers. This café and bar is ideally located between the two popular neighbourhoods Eimsbüttel and the Schanzenviertel, so it doesn't come as a surprise that it has become well frequented, particularly by people with artistic professions. Some of them come here in the afternoon to enjoy a café au lait whilst flipping through the pages of one of the designer magazines lying about. In summer you can even sit outside in the shade. Others simply stay here from breakfast until closing time, and this is not unusual as the food and drink are great and relatively reasonably priced. Coffee and tea from all over the world |
Winterhuder Markt 16 Hamburg, Hamburg 22299 Germany +49 (0)40 47 8200 |
The Winterhuder Kaffeehaus is located near the river banks of the Alster, halfway to the city park. It is an example of what can happen if one tries to establish a gay café outside the usual scene quarters. Everybody in the neighbourhood likes it, too, so now it is frequented by a rather mixed crowd. Inside you will find a Friesian ambience. The walls, chairs, and the bar are crafted from wood in the typical coastal fashion and the walls are painted white. In the summertime, there are also some chairs and tables outside on the Winterhuder Marketplace. Optically the place has little to offer, the city-developing of the 60's and 70's has left its traces. But you can still enjoy the fresh air under the sunshade. Although it is called a coffee-house, it also offers a large choice of tea. The portions for breakfast fill you well and prices. Later on the gateaux, or salads respectively are recommended. Review © 2007, Wcities |
