Sip on a refreshing beverage and enjoy the view of Aussenalster, a scenic lake in the North part of the city. This area is particularly trendy but not too touristy, so you'll get a feel for the true European marina lifestyle. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Upmarket café with wonderful views of the Alster |

The Alsterpavillon is now run by the Alex chain and boasts folding glass walls, ten open-plan kitchens and space for concerts, exhibitions and functions for up to 800 people. The original pavilion was built in 1799 and has always been popular with day-trippers, shoppers and sun worshippers. Located opposite Jungfernstieg shopping street, this is a great place to stop off for a coffee, beer or cocktail. The views over Lake Alster are fantastic, the prices accordingly steep. Hafenstraße 140 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 3179 3880 |
Located near the harbour, Amphore is an idyllic spot in the middle of the city, offering spectacular views of the River Elbe and the shipyards. The place attracts a mix of trendy young regulars, often clad in expensive clothes, Ray Bans and carrying mobile phones. But plenty of other people pop by during the day for a cup of coffee, a quick read through the daily papers and to enjoy the view. A flight of stairs leads down to the Golden Pudel Club. The bagels are served with different fillings, for example turkey, salmon, roast beef, chilli and vegetarian. Good Morning Bagels are also available. Prices range from EUR 1.4-3.4. An Alster view and good service |
Fernsicht 2 Hamburg, Hamburg 22301 Germany +49 (0)40 48 7824 http://www.bobbyreich.de/ |
Bobby Reich's spic and span restaurant and café is one of the most popular locations alongside the Greater Alster lake. It presides over a beautiful view, a beautiful crowd and a pleasant atmosphere. In summer, it can easily become a problem to get hold of a free seat outside on the jetty, although there are 250 of them. The staff might take a while to deliver all the orders when the place is busy, but regulars usually don't mind waiting. In winter, up to 100 guests can sit inside and enjoy a hot drink or a glass of mulled wine and the newspaper. Hot meals such as turkey slices, plain cooking and fish at reasonable prices are available from midday until 3pm and from 6-11p. Apart from beer, wine, champagne, long drinks and cocktails, you can get soft drinks and hot drinks. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great location on Lake Alster |
Harvestehuder Weg 1b Hamburg, Hamburg 20148 Germany +49 (0)40 410 3525 |
Harvestehude-one of Hamburg's most exclusive districts-is a popular place for sunbathing, picnicking and socialising on the banks of Lake Alster. The upper-class locals enjoy relaxing on the chaise lounges, while numerous office workers and business people spend their short lunch breaks here. Despite the bustle at this busy café, there is always time for some sun and a bit of socializing. Even if you aren't in the mood to catch some rays, a visit to this popular little café on the pier is still highly recommended. The view is included in the prices. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Brauhaus Joh. Albrecht is a real pub, complete with barrels, beer tables, and copper kettles. It is quite cosy with an unusual ambience. The view of the Alster Canal can be described as unique, as can the two house beers: the dark Kupfer and the light Messing. This is a pleasant place in which to relax after browsing the shops and braving the bustle of the city. On their first visit, many people discover that the Brauhaus is well worth revisiting. Cakes and breakfast near the campus |
Grindelallee 148 Hamburg, Hamburg 20146 Germany |
The Backwahn Cafe is located in the lively university district close to the campus. It has no connection to the Baghwan, despite the similarity in name, but offers excellent homemade bakery products. Unsurprisingly the Backwahn is a haunt of young people and students, but elderly Hamburgers can also be spotted here. Changing decorations with pictures and scultures can be admired here. As the place is always pretty busy, you sometimes have to stand at one of the tables. Apart from the gorgeous gateaus and cakes there are several different small or large breakfasts ranging from sweet to tasty. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is one of Wohlwillstraes nice little inviting gastronomic businesses. From the inside you can watch the streetlife through the former shops large windows, while on the other hand plants keep people from looking in. In good weather there is also enough room at the entrance to sit outside. With one of the cafe's magazines in one hand and a good cup of coffee in the other you can spend brilliant lazy afternoons here. A bit of Portugal on the Grindelallee |
Grindelallee 44 Hamburg, Hamburg 20146 Germany +49 (0)40 4503 9775 |
There are people who say that a Portuguese coffee is the best you can get. The Café Aramon at Grindelallee is a fine location to prove it. It's not just students who come here to relax a little from life´s hectic moments with some nice cake or a filled croissant and a look at the newspaper. Despite a rather plain interior-a long bar and a few stand-up tables with high benches-the Café Aramon seems to be like an oasis when you enter. That could be because it is so quiet compared to the busy Grindelallee, but the relaxed atmosphere and the friendly staff also contribute to this impression. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Große Brunnenstraße 60 Hamburg, Hamburg 22763 Germany +49 (0)40 390 5511 |
This pleasant café in Ottensen is remarkably versatile. It is a café, a restaurant with first class fresh pizza, and a coffee roasting house in one. At the Katelbach you can enjoy a cup of ground coffee or a tasty snack and browse through its many magazines for hours. The fine coffee which is roasted in the basement here is also rather popular in surrounding cafes and restaurants. The crisp, faintly smoky pizza with freshly prepared toppings is excellent, as are the beautiful evening meals and the homemade biscuits at the Katelbach. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Along with rock and soul music at a pleasant volume, you can have an excellent large breakfast here. There are various options-vegetarian, vegan, French, and many more variations can be tried out, so there is always something new on the breakfast table. The rooms are decorated in nice warm hues and they are well aired. But there is more than a perfect breakfast available here. The mixed regulars play boardgames, and there will soon be a computer for internet surfers as well. The owner is also planning to have readings, exhibitions and concerts here. The Cafe Oriental is as colorful as its surroundings and invites you to stop and have a cup of coffee on a shopping tour along the in-scene shops of Marktstraße. You can even have breakfast here until 3p, and not just on Sundays. The scent of joss sticks, which is almost omni-present throughout the entire neighborhood, becomes more intense here and creates an exotic atmosphere along with a number of Oriental accessories. All kinds of different people feel at home here, you will see old and young hippies as well as punks with their four legged companions. This popular restaurant at the Teufelsbrück has large windows looking out on to the exclusive scenery. It offers high-class à la carte cuisine, and is a perfect place for a good cup of coffee and a piece of cake in the afternoon. The extraordinary view of the Elbe and the passing ships is best enjoyed from one of the two terraces. At mealtimes and during the peak season it can become very busy here. From 10am-2.30pm there's an exquisite brunch available. Coffee and juice are included in the price. In the afternoon, cakes and gateaux are on the menu. Hot meals are prepared until 10.30pm. On a long nice shopping tour of the city centre shops and arcades you will need a break at some point. The Cappuccino at the Hof-Passage is a good location for such a break. You sit aside from the hectic life and the bustle but you are yet right in the middle of it, as the café and restaurant provides a good view of the restless shoppers. The café is usually very busy, so the noise level is not exactly relaxing. But the menu is very nice. In addition to the hot drink which gave the place its name, there is a choice of sophisticated hot meals to supply you with the energy you need for another round of shopping. There could hardly be a more romantic location for a bar. The Cliff is situated in a park on the banks of lake Alster. In the evenings, this is the place to go for Hamburg's young and professional, which unfortunately means that all the seats can quickly be taken. Not a surprise really, considering the scenery-rowers and sailing boats floating past, joggers, sun-worshippers, people out for a walk and all this framed in a beautiful sunset. The crowd seem very approachable and are out simply to enjoy themselves. This is a good place for the famous second date, but also for a night out in a group. This little ice-cream parlour is a great place for a daily visit if your wallet and conscience agree. It is the perfect stop after a shopping trip to busy Altona. If you are on the Ottenser Hauptstraße, this nice and quiet ice-cream oasis is reached in just a few minutes by walking from the Mercado shopping arcade. In good weather an ice-cream, espresso or milkshake can be very refreshing whilst sitting on the bench in front. The ice-cream is homemade by the owners and a single cone only costs (EUR 0.5). Pub with wicker-work furniture |
Bahrenfelder Straße 132 Hamburg, Hamburg 22765 Germany +49 (0)40 8510 8466 |
The Gazoline manages to remain stylish, yet uncomplicated. During the day it is mainly a café with cappuccinos and delicious cakes, and in the evening it becomes a pub with fresh draught beer. In summer you can sit outside on the pavement and watch the shoppers browsing on Bahrenfelder Straße. The Gazoline looks tiny from the outside - there is just enough room for one table and some armchairs at the window. The café is not that small at all, though, but rather oblong. If you pass the bar with the stand-up seats, you will get to the larger back room of the café-bar. There are candles and fresh flowers on the tables, and awfully comfy wicker-work chairs. Övelgönne 1 Hamburg, Hamburg 22605 Germany +49 (0)40 390 3443 |
Located directly on the banks of the River Elbe, the Elbterrassen is wonderfully romantic and is a great place to relax and watch the ships leisurely approach and leave the harbour. Evenings are also atmospheric, as the terrace overlooks the harbour, and you can watch the dock workers hurriedly going about their business. Isn't the first beer after work that much more pleasurable when you can watch other people who are still working? Although busy, it is normally easy to find a table. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Artists' bar |
Schulterblatt 83 Hamburg, Hamburg 20357 Germany +49 (0)40 439 2828 |
Differently decorated, but always busy meeting point for the artists, intellectuals, and movers and shakers of the international family of the Schanzenviertel. During the day you can drink a cup of coffee and chat in peace here, while at night the noise level rises along with the number of guests. There are interesting little pictures on the high walls to keep your eyes occupied. The furniture is rather plain, but not uncomfortable. In front of the Saal II the lively and colorful district´s everyday-life takes place and makes you wonder how so many twenty-somethings can afford so much leisure time. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Designed by Hundertwasser |
Behringstraße 42-44 Hamburg, Hamburg 22763 Germany +49 (0)40 3990 3603 http://www.Stadtcafe.com |
While the unique style of this café attracts art lovers from far and wide, it is also popular with locals. The design is based on sketches by the legendary Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. A gallery, tower, numerous plants and an integrated travel agent have turned this place into something resembling an entertainment centre. There is a variety of scrumptious cakes, a wide choice of hot drinks and set lunches. Visitors can enjoy a selection of cocktails and wine in the evening. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Between the Reeperbahn and Fish market |
Lange Straße 50 Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 3179 0808 |
Süß+Salzig is a nice place to stop between the Reeperbahn and fish market. The café has a very individual charm and offers a choice of international breakfasts among other nice things. The interior is a kind of bold mixture. It proves that wooden stools and benches and stylish deco lamps can work together. Süß+Salzig (sweet and salty) is both the name and the concept here. The changing sweet specials like ice-cream and cake, however, are most tempting. You can get American, Spanish, German, French and English breakfasts too! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Modern campus café |
Edmund-Siemers-Allee 1 Hamburg, Hamburg 20146 Germany +49 (0)40 4149 8155 |
In former times one had to walk through a second-hand bookshop in order to reach the Café Libresso, and in good weather the guests used to gather on a nice old terrace. But a lot has changed since the café moved into the new wing-building of the main University building. There still is a second-hand bookshop next door, and the formerly somewhat shabby coffee-handout which has changed into a stylish city-café, still can´t complain about a lack of visitors. The regulars have changed a bit - less going-to-be teachers, more going-to-be lawyers - but you still pick up the inexpensive hot drinks and biscuits yourself and nicely put your used dishes onto a little trolley afterwards. The café with the stylish ambience makes for a nice location for a chat, and you can also read and study a bit here, when it is less busy. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Coffee and tea from all over the world |
Winterhuder Markt 16 Hamburg, Hamburg 22299 Germany +49 (0)40 47 8200 |
The Winterhuder Kaffeehaus is located near the river banks of the Alster, halfway to the city park. It is an example of what can happen if one tries to establish a gay café outside the usual scene quarters. Everybody in the neighbourhood likes it, too, so now it is frequented by a rather mixed crowd. Inside you will find a Friesian ambience. The walls, chairs, and the bar are crafted from wood in the typical coastal fashion and the walls are painted white. In the summertime, there are also some chairs and tables outside on the Winterhuder Marketplace. Optically the place has little to offer, the city-developing of the 60's and 70's has left its traces. But you can still enjoy the fresh air under the sunshade. Although it is called a coffee-house, it also offers a large choice of tea. The portions for breakfast fill you well and prices. Later on the gateaux, or salads respectively are recommended. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Home-made cakes in a 200-year-old farmhouse |
Elbchaussee 499a Hamburg, Hamburg 22587 Germany +49 (0)40 86 0173 http://www.witthues.de/ |
Located in the picturesque Hirschpark, Witthüs tea shop is a great place to relax with a home-made cake and cup of tea. With a historic fireplace, rococo furniture and subdued classical music in the background, the tea shop is extremely atmospheric, but is also very popular, meaning that you may have to wait a while for a table. Guests can sit on the terrace in the summer and enjoy one of the freshly baked rolls or cakes. Sunday brunch is available from 10a-2p. Review © 2007, Wcities |
