Restaurant and theatre under one roof |
Hudtwalckerstraße 13 Hamburg, Hamburg 22999 Germany +49 (0)40 4607 2828 http://www.allegria-restaurant... |
The Allegria offers modern international cuisine, and shares its premises with the Komödie at Winterhuder Fährhaus. That is why the following unusual service is available -you can take a break between courses, go to the theatre, and then return to your meal. The restaurant has large windows facing the Alster river. They use both spotlights and other lighting effects to create a bright and stylish postmodern ambience. In their own words, the Allegria offers "ambitious Austro-Mediterranean" cuisine. An excellent wine list caters for the wide variety of different guests and even satisfies the most demanding experts. Extra rooms for private or business celebrations and a party-service are also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nouvelle cuisine for discerning customers |
Neuer Wall 50 / Bleichenbrücke Hamburg, Hamburg 20354 Germany +49 (0)40 36 7014 |
Pleasantly situated at Bleichenbrücke bridge, Anna offers exquisite meals for the discerning palate. The chef rustles up exotic dishes influenced by Italian, Japanese and German nouvelle cuisine. The interior is tastefully furnished with plenty of plants and strong colours, creating a bright and cheerful atmosphere. In summer, guests can dine on the floating terrace in front of the restaurant. The regulars include local business people, politicians and high society. With a selection of no more than 10 dishes, the menu is short but sweet. Popular choices include the platter of mixed starters, Austrian meat dishes, Italian chicken specialities, delightful salmon and tender asparagus. Review © 2007, Wcities |

German charms |
Kampstraße 27 Hamburg, Hamburg 20357 Germany +49 (0)40 4210 2915 http://www.artisan-hamburg.com/ |
Folks in Hamburg like to experiment with their food - the restaurants cater to a variety of tastes, especially to those involving fusion food. Artisan is one such joint, serving interesting tapa-style dishes in an informal atmosphere. The locals apparently like it, for the place is often full. Evenings find people dressing for glamor, and this spirit is reflected by the restaurant. Elaborate white tablecloths and seven-course menus turn up in all their splendor. If you miss out on the alcohol, the prices are just right. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Original Hamburg pub |
Gluckstraße 75 Hamburg, Hamburg 22081 Germany +49 (0)40 29 4762 |
This place is very Hamburg. In a city where track suits have experienced a revival, it is only fitting that there should be a rustic pub, full of seventies charm, which serves up traditional pub meals and plenty of north German beer for the locals. The menu contains the likes of rump steak, Bauernfrühstuck (savoury omelettes) and bacon pancakes. All the meals are filling, but don't expect anything too trendy-this is an original establishment with original guests! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Grand view and great food |
Bernhard-Nocht-Straße 99 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 3116 3116 |
On the top floor of the Bavaria-Brewery, you will find this restaurant, decorated in a grand petit-bourgeois style and boasting spectacular views over the harbour. Good traditional North German cuisine is prepared and served with lots of loving care here, examples being Hamburg eel soup, plaice and sole. A reduced price menu is also available in the evenings after theatre performances and musicals have finished. The Bavaria Blick is mainly frequented by tourists and businessmen. An Alster view and good service |
Fernsicht 2 Hamburg, Hamburg 22301 Germany +49 (0)40 48 7824 http://www.bobbyreich.de/ |
Bobby Reich's spic and span restaurant and café is one of the most popular locations alongside the Greater Alster lake. It presides over a beautiful view, a beautiful crowd and a pleasant atmosphere. In summer, it can easily become a problem to get hold of a free seat outside on the jetty, although there are 250 of them. The staff might take a while to deliver all the orders when the place is busy, but regulars usually don't mind waiting. In winter, up to 100 guests can sit inside and enjoy a hot drink or a glass of mulled wine and the newspaper. Hot meals such as turkey slices, plain cooking and fish at reasonable prices are available from midday until 3pm and from 6-11p. Apart from beer, wine, champagne, long drinks and cocktails, you can get soft drinks and hot drinks. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Creative international cuisine |
Greifswalder Straße 43 Hamburg, Hamburg 20099 Germany +49 (0)40 24 9422 http://www.restaurant-cox.de |
'Innovative' and 'creative' are words that describe Cox extremely well. The spacious dining rooms are simple but stylish, making this the perfect place to relax and enjoy great food. As well as classic French and Italian dishes, the menu contains a selection of excellent international specialities in the mid-to-top price category. Yet the prices certainly haven't stopped people from coming here and booking is essential. Try the fillet of halibut with coriander and rice, venison ravioli on spinach with goat's cheese or the grated mango and mascarpone gratin. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Feeling like a sailor! |
Vorsetzen Hamburg City Sporthafen Hamburg, Hamburg 20459 Germany +49 (0)40 36 2553 http://www.das-feuerschiff.de/ |
Imagine enjoying fresh and deliciously prepared fish within the confines of a real ship! Das Feuerschiff - once a light-ship used as a floating lighthouse in the English Channel, offers you this unique experience and much more. Apart from savoring the seafood delights, you can also be part of the jam sessions that are conducted here. If you're lucky enough, you can catch the cabaret show, which is hosted once in a while. On the regular eventless days, you could simply enjoy the boats chugging by while you leisurely sip on your white beer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A good wine after a good film |
Friedensallee 7 Hamburg, Hamburg 22765 Germany +49 (0)40 3990 8025 |
The most frequent subject of conversation around here? Well, we're in the middle of Hamburg's film district, so take a guess! A popular meeting place for producers, directors and students, this café is also frequented by visitors to the nearby Zeise cinema. What could be better than analysing the film over a glass of fine wine and a tasty plate of Franco-German food? Review © 2007, Wcities |

A fishy tradition! |
Övelgönne 6 Hamburg, Hamburg 22605 Germany +49 (0)40 880 0445 http://www.fischrestaurant-hop... |
This restaurant has been in the neighborhood for about ninety years and still attracts the same kind of crowd. Guessing from its name, 'fish' - caught and cooked to perfection is the specialty here. With creepers forming a graceful trellis within the dining area, you really might not regret missing out on an alfresco seating on the terrace. The decor is kept very basic, so that nothing spoils the beautiful views of the bay. Filled with tourists and locals alike, this is a great place to taste authentic Hamburger Kümmel (crabs), sip on German 'biere' and gaze away into the horizon! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bavarian food in Hamburg |
Große Theaterstraße 9 Hamburg, Hamburg 20354 Germany +49 (0)40 34 5756 http://www.restaurant-franzisk... |
If you've had enough of the allegedly stiff and formal Hanseatic people, and feel you could do with proper Bavarian food and ambience for a change, why not try the Franziskaner. The waitresses wear traditional Dirndl dresses and the interior is very impressively decorated in authentic Bavarian style. There are rumours that real Bavarian guests sometimes spontaneously start singing folk songs at the bar. Rich and tasty meals like roast pork and veal sausage with pickled cabbage, pretzels and dumplings are on the menu here. They can be washed down with the typical Maß (1 litre) of real Bavarian beer - even in Hamburg! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Typical northern German restaurant |
Jungfernstieg 7 Hamburg, Hamburg 20354 Germany +49 (0)40 3576 0620 http://www.friesenkeller.de/ |
The Friesenkeller embodies all that is good about north German restaurants-a cosy, rustic ambience and a fine selection of rich and tasty northern German specialities at reasonable prices. The dishes are presented on a somewhat unusual menu, which is made to look like a newspaper. The emphasis is on fish dishes, with plaice being a popular choice. Guests can sit outside on the banks of the canal during good weather. Review © 2007, Wcities |

You say potato...... |
Deichstraße 21 Hamburg, Hamburg 20459 Germany +49 (0)40 36 5585 http://www.kartoffelkeller-ham... |
The "potato cellar" in the historic Deichstraße is a really original restaurant with lots of delicious potato dishes. It provides you with proof (as if it were needed) that potatoes are very versatile. It is very cosy in this Old Town cellar. The many regulars and lots of tourists know and appreciate this, so it's best to book in advance. The interior has more than a slight potato theme-even the waiters and waitresses are dressed in potato-sacks. You can do a lot with potatoes-at very moderate prices. The menu has tasty soups, soufflés, sweet potato-pancakes, meat and fish dishes and even a potato spirit to finish off the meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Grosse Johannisstraße 2 Hamburg, Hamburg 20475 Germany +49 (0)40 36 4153 http://www.ratsweinkeller.de/ |
This restaurant has retained its Old World feel; its high arches, vaulted ceilings and stained-glass windows presiding over the interiors. Offering traditional German delights with a range of beef and seafood dishes, Ratsweinkeller draws a crowd that prefers meals to be wholesome and value for money. If not for the food, you should visit for its unique feel and atmosphere! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wild goose and trout at a hotel restaurant |
Holstenwall 19 Hamburg, Hamburg 20355 Germany +49 (0)40 31 8080 |
This exquisite restaurant is part of the privately maintained Hotel am Holstenwall, near the trade fair complex, and opposite the Museum of Hamburg´s history and the Planten un Blomen park. You do not have to be a hotel guest in order to enjoy a good meal in the restaurant´s stylish ambience within the lively atmosphere of the hotel. The two main house specialities are delicious wild goose and freshly caught trout. The menu also offers a quality choice of dishes from all over the world, as well as exclusive set meals. Stylish modern restaurant |
Papenhuder Straße 35 Hamburg, Hamburg 22087 Germany +49 (0)40 229 7198 http://www.restaurant-rexrodt.de/ |
Known for its creative cuisine, Rexrodt's offers one or two daily specials, as well as seasonal French, Italian and German dishes. Excellent desserts and some first class wines complete the selection. The building actually used to be an abattoir, but the art nouveau ambience and shiny tiles on the walls now attract media people, lawyers and journalists. Try the shrimps in fennel sauce, the baked lamb coated in herbs or go for the three-course meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Austrian cuisine for gourmets |
Agathe-Lasch-Weg 2 Hamburg, Hamburg 22605 Germany +49 (0)40 881 1200 |
This restaurant in the Othmarschen district near the river Elbe is a place for gourmets and fans of Austrian cuisine and tea. Röper´s Hof is a beautiful farmhouse with a thatched roof. A lovely garden where you can get some fresh air after your meal is also part of the restaurant. The rustic place is also an exhibition venue for changing modern works of art, which you can admire on the walls. The exquisite German-Austrian cuisine includes main courses along with vegetarian dishes and a Sunday brunch. This may be rather expensive, but there are lots of delicacies like salmon and scampi to feast on. Tea lovers can choose from classic Friesian blends and herbal teas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

German and Chinese cuisine plus view over the Elbe |
Blankeneser Hauptstraße 107 Hamburg, Hamburg 22587 Germany +49 (0)40 86 1514 |
Up in the picturesque staircase district above the Strandweg in Blankenese, Sagebiel's Fährhaus can be found. From the river Elbe you can also reach it by climbing up a long staircase. And it is definitely worth the effort. In the summer you can dine outside on the spacious terrace with its old trees. In addition to an exquisite meal, you can enjoy a fantastic view over the Elbe from here, which even Wilhelm I appreciated in his day. There are two kitchens under one roof at Sagebiel's. On one hand they offer high-class traditional German dishes, while on the other hand Chinese specialities contribute an exotic flair. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The old begets the new |
St. Pauli Hafenstrasse 136-138 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 40 3179 4660 http://www.restaurant-schauerm... |
Expect some hoity-toity folk at this eatery, which contrasts starkly with the streets outside. Retro 60's décor transports you back in time and puts you in the mood to party. The food is German, with a few Mediterranean influences – quite novel – which is, essentially, the crowd-puller. It would help to be familiar with German, or to have a knowledgeable pal around to guide you through the menu, which, once deciphered, can prove to be both intriguing and satisfying. Pork dishes in Bahrenfeld |
Silcherstraße 1 Hamburg, Hamburg 22761 Germany +49 (0)40 8550 0607 http://www.schweinske.de |
This restaurant offers all kinds of tasty pork meals. Be it the Prachtschwein (grand pig) or the Superschwein (super pig) at EUR13.80 for those with a big appetite, there is quite a selection. But apart from inexpensive meat dishes, the Schweinske also offers vegetarian snacks, a very versatile and inexpensive lunch special as well as breakfast. The terrace at the Bahrenfeld branch is only open in the evenings, as there is too much noise from the street in the daytime - which you won´t notice inside. If you prefer to celebrate your own private Schweinske-party at home, the party and delivery service will provide you with Italo, Fritz, Jäger or braised pork. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Creative cuisine |
Neumühlen 17 Hamburg, Hamburg 22763 Germany +49 (0)40 89 2760 http://www.tafelhaus-hamburg.de/ |
The small and pretty Tafelhaus is located in the not exactly attractive neighborhood of an industrial estate, but it cannot complain about a lack of guests. Lovers of the varied, fresh cuisine on offer here still find their way to the restaurant. The light dishes, with Mediterranean and sometimes a hint of Asian flavour, are the trademark of this free, creative cuisine which is among the best in Hamburg. The Tafelhaus has a very well-arranged wine cellar with over 400 different French and German red and white wines. The 5-course dinner, which is frequently rethought at with new ingredients, is recommended for a special occasion. You'll also be able to get a good midday meal here. Review © 2007, Wcities |
