Anna

Nouvelle cuisine for discerning customers
Neuer Wall 50 / Bleichenbrücke
Hamburg, Hamburg 20354
Germany
+49 (0)40 36 7014
Pleasantly situated at Bleichenbrücke bridge, Anna offers exquisite meals for the discerning palate. The chef rustles up exotic dishes influenced by Italian, Japanese and German nouvelle cuisine. The interior is tastefully furnished with plenty of plants and strong colours, creating a bright and cheerful atmosphere. In summer, guests can dine on the floating terrace in front of the restaurant. The regulars include local business people, politicians and high society. With a selection of no more than 10 dishes, the menu is short but sweet. Popular choices include the platter of mixed starters, Austrian meat dishes, Italian chicken specialities, delightful salmon and tender asparagus.

If you like fish, the Bixio is the place for you. The menu offers lots of seafood dishes and classic Italian cuisine. There is a hot and cold Italian buffet on Sundays. Another recommendable special is the antipasti buffet on Fridays which is available from 6pm. Families with young children will be delighted to hear that children up to the age of 6 dine free at the Bixio. Older siblings under 15 pay one Deutschmark for every year of age. In good weather you can have your meal on the open-air terrace. The Bixio has a bright and friendly interior with lots of flower pots and fresh flowers. A lovely balustrade serves as a paravant. The restaurant´s rooms are also frequently used for art exhibitions.

Bottega Lentini

Great pizza and Italian cuisine
Eppendorfer Weg 267
Hamburg, Hamburg 20251
Germany
+49 (0)40 4696 0263
The pizza baker here is supposed to be the grand master of his craft in Hamburg. Apart from pizza, the Bottega Lentini offers quality Italian cuisine which is well worth a try. Pleasant, non-snobbish people get together in a pleasant atmosphere here to enjoy a nice meal and experience an exquisite service rarely to be found these days. Pizza-wise you can either get your inspiration from the daily specials, or choose some toppings to create your own.

Bruschetta

Great food and a homely ambience
Dorotheenstraße 35
Hamburg, Hamburg 22301
Germany
+49 (0)40 27 6661
This is a great place for those with the financial wherewithal. The menu consists mainly of pasta and meat dishes (pizza is not available), while the wine list offers some wonderful bottles of Soave, Frascati and Chianti. As it is extremely popular, booking is essential. Media types and business people meet here for the slightly less expensive lunchtime specials (EUR 8). The Spaghetti with Seafood (EUR 11) and Veal Steak with Asparagus and Mushrooms (EUR 15) are highly recommended.

Cox

Creative international cuisine
Greifswalder Straße 43
Hamburg, Hamburg 20099
Germany
+49 (0)40 24 9422
http://www.restaurant-cox.de
'Innovative' and 'creative' are words that describe Cox extremely well. The spacious dining rooms are simple but stylish, making this the perfect place to relax and enjoy great food. As well as classic French and Italian dishes, the menu contains a selection of excellent international specialities in the mid-to-top price category. Yet the prices certainly haven't stopped people from coming here and booking is essential. Try the fillet of halibut with coriander and rice, venison ravioli on spinach with goat's cheese or the grated mango and mascarpone gratin.

Cuneo

Age-old favourite
Davidstraße 11
Hamburg, Hamburg 20359
Germany
+49 (0)40 31 2580
When Mamma Maria opened her simple tavern in Hamburg's red light district in 1905, she couldn't have known that it would still be a firm favourite a hundred years later. Celebrities (genuine ones as well as plenty of wannabes) come here to treat themselves to sophisticated cuisine at mid-to-upper range prices. All the pasta, fish and meat dishes are well worth the money (EUR 7.50-20), but don't ask for pizza, as it is not on the menu! The atmosphere is relaxed, sometimes slightly chaotic, but always friendly. The chef pays special attention to each and every one of his customers, making everyone feel special for just one night.

Da Paolino

Hamburg's dolce vita
Alsterufer 2
Hamburg, Hamburg 20354
Germany
+49 (0)40 4135 5655
Paolino Cherchi is one of Hamburg's best known Italian chefs and many of his guests were devastated when his restaurant burned down in 1997. Two years later, it reopened in a new location overlooking the Alster and continues to offer the same gourmet Italian cuisine. The menu includes traditional antipasti, pasta dishes and a selection of Italian fish and meat dishes. Despite the exclusive location the prices are very reasonable. Da Paolino is particularly popular with local celebrities.

Eisenstein

An electic montage
Friedensallee 9
Hamburg, Hamburg 22765
Germany
+49 (0)40 390 4606
The pizzas here are a regular favorite - known to be the 'best in the country', the pastas too are delicious enough for any Italian food lover. The crowd that comes in is generally a pre-theatre one or then locals looking for a quick and light meal. The sassy decor and the general energy filled atmosphere of the eatery is just one of the reasons for its consistent popularity!

Relaxing Italian bar-cafe in Levantehaus
Mönckebergstraße 7
Levantehaus
Hamburg, Hamburg 20095
Germany
+49 (0)40 3039 9225
This cafe bar is situated beneath the dome of the Levantehaus, which is illuminated at night. The place in one of the most exclusive city centre shopping areas is Italian - the staff speak with an accent, the coffee is con latte and the espresso and cappuccino are heavenly. This is the right place to take a break from the bustle in the shops and think about your next holiday, bang in the centre of grey Hamburg.

Geel-Haus

Small but tasty
Koppel 76
Hamburg, Hamburg 20099
Germany
+49 (0)40 280 3660
http://www.geelhaus.de
One will come along this pub only if one is actually looking for it. The 5 minutes walk from the main station are definitely worth the effort because the menu offers a small but unusual and affordable selection of dishes. The Geelhaus is located in a rather quiet street but is connected with the Lange Reihe by a passageway. The wooden floor is really old, the floor-boards are creaking accordingly. In contrast, the yellow walls bring some freshness to the room. Rather unique are the lamps that are made of welded scrap. Every dish is freshly prepared. Therefore one might to have to wait a bit longer. Some dishes combine ingredients in an unusual but delicious way: e.g. spaghetti with cashew-sauce, or chicken-salad with orange-slices and green pepper.

Il Ristorante

Excellent Italian behind an uninviting facade
Große Bleichen 16
Hamburg, Hamburg 20354
Germany
+49 (0)40 34 3335
You will find this excellent Italian place behind an unattractive stairwell and the fact that every service, from the cloakroom to the bread and butter, must be paid for might irritate or cause some new guests to wonder. Nevertheless, it must be mentioned that in addition to sophisticated cuisine this place has a very stylish interior, a posh wine list and staff who are almost affectionate. They really make a visit worth your while.

The Limerick on Grindelallee is a café, pub and restaurant in one. It mainly attracts students since it is located on the edge of the campus. The interior here is plain but friendly. Mamma Mia

Quick service and crispy pizzas
Barnerstraße 42
Hamburg, Hamburg 22765
Germany
+49 (0)40 390 0386
The house specialities at this popular Italian restaurant in Ottensen are the pizzas, but they also offer nice pasta dishes and daily specials. "Mamma mia" is a thought that might frequently come to mind here while you wait to be seated at a table or when you watch the hectic action at the oven. But the service here is quick and the food is very good. The pizza toppings might not always be aesthetically pleasing, but the final product is large, smells fantastic and will definitely satisfy you.

Marcellino

Good Italian restaurant
Bramfelder Chaussee 306
Hamburg, Hamburg 22177
Germany
+49 (0)40 641 5371
There is a good balance of price and quality in this restaurant. The Italian eatery Marcellino is located in a little side street in Bramfeld, one of Hamburg´s otherwise less attractive eastern neighbourhoods. Simple, but tasty and fresh dishes are served in an elegant atmosphere here, which is likely to bring back memories of your holidays in the southern European regions. After your meal, a walk on the park-like grounds of beautiful Ohlsdorf cemetary are recommended.

The Medira is located in a residential area of the popular neighbourhood of Eimsbüttel with its many pubs and street cafés. It offers a choice of delicious Mediterranean dishes. The restaurant´s interior has been given a modern design. In the summer months it is also possible to dine on the outside terrace. Noodle's

Café bar with pasta dishes and more
Schanzenstraße 2-4
Hamburg, Hamburg 20357
Germany
+49 (0)40 439 2840
Noodle´s is a pleasant café bar in the colourful Schanzen district. It has breakfast, lunch and evening menus, and is a nice place for a chat. The interior is far from extravagant, but comfortable. Noodle´s is a good spot for watching people, especially in the summer when you can also sit outside. Despite the name, they have far more than the impressive range of pasta dishes on the menu here. A choice of mainly German dishes is also available for lunch or in the evenings. The evening meals change every week and there is brunch on Sundays.

Stylish modern restaurant
Papenhuder Straße 35
Hamburg, Hamburg 22087
Germany

Known for its creative cuisine, Rexrodt's offers one or two daily specials, as well as seasonal French, Italian and German dishes. Excellent desserts and some first class wines complete the selection. The building actually used to be an abattoir, but the art nouveau ambience and shiny tiles on the walls now attract media people, lawyers and journalists. Try the shrimps in fennel sauce, the baked lamb coated in herbs or go for the three-course meal.

Rocco

Lively Italian restaurant
Wohlwillstraße 29
Hamburg, Hamburg 20359
Germany
+49 (0)40 43 5505
Rocco is a popular Italian restaurant with many regulars who appreciate its lively atmosphere and like to sit and chat. You had better go elsewhere for a romantic dinner, because space is rather limited here, despite the recently opened extra café room, and the waitresses and waiters are buzzing to and fro. Those waiting for a table are often given a complimentary drink. In summer, you can also dine outside, in front of the corner building. Apart from a fixed menu, there are daily specials and great large pizzas with a crispy base and a unique taste. The way the toppings are arranged by the pizza baker serves as a good example of true Italian passion. The pasta dishes are also recommended, and all the food is very moderately priced.

Santa Lucia

Little restaurant in a basement
Juliusstraße 18
Hamburg, Hamburg 22769
Germany

This little Italian restaurant in the Schanzen district offers traditional cuisine with a remarkably authentic touch. The Santa Lucia is a small and cosy basement restaurant which can only seat a restricted number of guests. The cook here is a master of his craft. He understands how to create classic Italian dishes with fresh herbs and high quality meat or freshly caught fish. The desserts at Santa Lucia´s are also highly recommended. Molto bene!

Zirkus Erich

The bigger, the better
Erichstraße 19
Hamburg, Hamburg 20359
Germany
+49 40 6887 3033
This eatery thinks big – spacious, with deep, plush leather seats and striking mirrors, it give the impression of being much larger than it actually is. The spirit of generosity extends to the patrons as well. Hooks are provided to hang up coats and bar stools come armed with footrests. Pure white tablecloths set off the dark wall panels, lending a sophisticated air to the dining area. One can feast on a variety of Italian and Asian food; the menu changes twice a week. The staff is polite and move about unobtrusively. If you're planning a celebration, book the function room - it can accommodate about 500 people.
