Alex im Alsterpavillon

Upmarket café with wonderful views of the Alster
Jungfernstieg 54
Hamburg, Hamburg 20354
Germany
+49 (0)40 350 1870
The Alsterpavillon is now run by the Alex chain and boasts folding glass walls, ten open-plan kitchens and space for concerts, exhibitions and functions for up to 800 people. The original pavilion was built in 1799 and has always been popular with day-trippers, shoppers and sun worshippers. Located opposite Jungfernstieg shopping street, this is a great place to stop off for a coffee, beer or cocktail. The views over Lake Alster are fantastic, the prices accordingly steep.

Amphore

Fashionable café and pub
Hafenstraße 140
Hamburg, Hamburg 20359
Germany
+49 (0)40 3179 3880
Located near the harbour, Amphore is an idyllic spot in the middle of the city, offering spectacular views of the River Elbe and the shipyards. The place attracts a mix of trendy young regulars, often clad in expensive clothes, Ray Bans and carrying mobile phones. But plenty of other people pop by during the day for a cup of coffee, a quick read through the daily papers and to enjoy the view. A flight of stairs leads down to the Golden Pudel Club.

Café Strauss

Mirror, mirror on the wall
Wiesenstraße 46
Hamburg, Hamburg c
Germany
+49 (0)40 49 3131
Mirrors, maybe too many mirrors everywhere, long ostrich legs and a wonderful beer garden in the summer-these are the trademarks of the popular and pleasant Cafe Strauss in Eimsbüttel. The rooms appear very large and bright, and the mainly wooden interior has been kept rather plain. There is always nice and friendly service at the café. An arch with plants marks the inviting entrance to the beautiful open-air area.

Café Unter den Linden

All multi-cultural in Schanzenviertel
Juliusstraße 16
Hamburg, Hamburg 22769
Germany

The charm and flair of the Schanzenviertel is concentrated here. Punks, kids, intellectuals and everyday people all come to this place with its garish green walls and 50's decor. The café is actually surrounded by the lime-trees, which are the inspiration for its name. They certainly contribute to its popularity and make people want to stay that little bit longer, as do the 10 daily newspapers and the many magazines for customers to read over coffee.

Café da Vinci

Coffee and newspapers in a quiet atmosphere
Gärtnerstraße 30
Hamburg, Hamburg 20253
Germany
+49 (0)40 422 6611
If you are looking for a place to go to in order to recover from the exertions of life in the city you might find it at the Café da Vinci. Here you can enjoy a nice cup of tea or coffee in peace, read the papers, and switch off for a while (even the mobile phone). That is what regulars associate with this oasis of many plants and a Mona Lisa on the wall. Delicious ice-cream and homemade cakes are especially recommended along with your hot drinks.

Fiedler's

Leisure and holiday atmosphere
Hofweg 103
Hamburg, Hamburg 22085
Germany
+49 (0)40 229 0540
The Cafe Fiedler´s has an excellent location on the tributary of the river Alster. Ferries pass by here on their way to the Mühlenkamp berth and you can drink a cup of coffee with a lovely view of the waterfront. When the sun is shining you can sit outside on a spacious terrace, and when it's cold a seat in the gallery with its amazing view is recommended. The basement is also comfortable. But all the seats are occupied and a visit to this busy café is not the general idea of peace and quiet.

Koppel 66

Classic, candlelit cafe
Förderkreis Koppel 66 e
Haus für Kunst und Handwerk
Hamburg, Hamburg 20099

Café Koppel lies nicely tucked away behind a backyard off the Lange Reihe. Everything here is ecologically sound - down to the food and the Transfair tea and coffee. The clientele is made up of both social scientists and those for whom eco-friendly is 'in'. You can sit comfortably here, listening to classical music by candlelight. From October-March there is a live programme on the first Wednesday of the month.

Max & Consorten

A little scruffy, but charming nonetheless
Spadenteich 7
Hamburg, Hamburg 20099
Germany
+49 (0)40 24 5617
This popular pub is always busy. With beer, mixed music and hot meals from a large menu, this is hardly surprising. The kitchen serves anything from breakfast and light snacks to tasty dishes until late at night. Max & Co is in with the theatre crowd despite its worn-out floorboards and yellowing posters. They sit amongst students, brokers and a mix of people enjoying the originality of the slightly rustic decor and its Seventies charm.

Saal II

Artists' bar
Schulterblatt 83
Hamburg, Hamburg 20357
Germany
+49 (0)40 439 2828
Differently decorated, but always busy meeting point for the artists, intellectuals, and movers and shakers of the international family of the Schanzenviertel. During the day you can drink a cup of coffee and chat in peace here, while at night the noise level rises along with the number of guests. There are interesting little pictures on the high walls to keep your eyes occupied. The furniture is rather plain, but not uncomfortable. In front of the Saal II the lively and colorful district´s everyday-life takes place and makes you wonder how so many twenty-somethings can afford so much leisure time.
