Hanseatic delicatessen with a noble ambience |
Strandweg 33 Hamburg, Hamburg 22587 Germany +49 (0)40 86 0438 |
Located directly on the Strandweg in Blankenese, the Ahrberg has a great view of the river Elbe. It is an exquisite spot for a high-class meal either before or after a walk along the Elbe. The Ahrberg belongs to the upper price category restaurants. A visit is a bit like travelling back in time to the days of teak, gramophones and wall clocks. Mixed customers enjoy their visit here among lots of stylish antiques and old-fashioned decoration. In good weather, you can dine outside or on one of the three sheltered terraces. There is traditional Hanseatic cuisine, especially for fans of fish dishes and so called 'plain cooking', but the menu also offers a fine choice of international dishes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tasty meals beside the Alster |
Alte Mühle 24 Hamburg, Hamburg 22395 Germany +49 (0)40 604 9171 |
The beautiful "Old Mill" restaurant is located in a historic building at a little brook connecting the mill pond with the river Alster. A nice spot for a break, as the Alster footpath passes through here. Apart from the dining-room, there is a lovely beer garden with old chestnut trees from which you can see a carp pond. On the menu there is a choice of mixed mainly 'plain cooking' dishes. People from the North can get their herring with fried potatoes here and people from the South their Leberkäse - a Bavarian meat loaf made with mince meat, eggs and spices plus cabbage. Moreover, the "Old Mill" has an excellent wine-list and serves coffee and cake in the afternoons. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Good traditional North German cuisine is prepared and served with lots of loving care here, examples being Hamburg eel soup, plaice and sole. A reduced price menu is also available in the evenings after theatre performances and musicals have finished. The Bavaria Blick is mainly frequented by tourists and businessmen. Exquisite cuisine in Teufelsbrück |
Schiffsanleger Teufelsbrück Hamburg, Hamburg 22609 Germany +49 (0)40 82 4187 http://www.restaurant-engel.de |
This popular restaurant at the Teufelsbrück has large windows looking out on to the exclusive scenery. It offers high-class à la carte cuisine, and is a perfect place for a good cup of coffee and a piece of cake in the afternoon. The extraordinary view of the Elbe and the passing ships is best enjoyed from one of the two terraces. At mealtimes and during the peak season it can become very busy here. From 10am-2.30pm there's an exquisite brunch available. Coffee and juice are included in the price. In the afternoon, cakes and gateaux are on the menu. Hot meals are prepared until 10.30pm. There are excellent main courses with fish or meat and very nice side dishes on the menu, all a bit expensive, but their high quality justifies the price. All the meals here are recommended. Versatile concert and events venue |
Rothenbaumchaussee 13 Hamburg, Hamburg 20148 Germany +49 (0)40 4190 2224 http://www.curiohaus.de |
The Curio house has a striking facade and a lot to offer inside. It used to be the students' cafeteria but fortunately, the beautiful building was renovated into a very versatile concert and events venue. Sports and costume balls are held frequently in the large old ballroom and on the second Friday of every month there is a popular singles party called Fisch sucht Fahrrad. The Curio house has got an excellent restaurant. Nothing remains to indicate that it was once a student cafeteria-except for the size of the room itself. The chef provides his guests with an outstanding service and sophisticated cuisine for discerning palates. There also is a nice old concert hall here decorated in burgundy with an enormous chandelier. Here, Jazz and Latin music are played in a festive ambience. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Imagine enjoying fresh and deliciously prepared fish within the confines of a real ship! Das Feuerschiff - once a light-ship used as a floating lighthouse in the English Channel, offers you this unique experience and much more. Apart from savoring the seafood delights, you can also be part of the jam sessions that are conducted here. If you're lucky enough, you can catch the cabaret show, which is hosted once in a while. On the regular eventless days, you could simply enjoy the boats chugging by while you leisurely sip on your white beer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A fishy tradition! |
Övelgönne 6 Hamburg, Hamburg 22605 Germany +49 (0)40 880 0445 http://www.fischrestaurant-hop... |
This restaurant has been in the neighborhood for about ninety years and still attracts the same kind of crowd. Guessing from its name, 'fish' - caught and cooked to perfection is the specialty here. With creepers forming a graceful trellis within the dining area, you really might not regret missing out on an alfresco seating on the terrace. The decor is kept very basic, so that nothing spoils the beautiful views of the bay. Filled with tourists and locals alike, this is a great place to taste authentic Hamburger Kümmel (crabs), sip on German 'biere' and gaze away into the horizon! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Typical northern German restaurant |
Jungfernstieg 7 Hamburg, Hamburg 20354 Germany +49 (0)40 3576 0620 http://www.friesenkeller.de/ |
The Friesenkeller embodies all that is good about north German restaurants-a cosy, rustic ambience and a fine selection of rich and tasty northern German specialities at reasonable prices. The dishes are presented on a somewhat unusual menu, which is made to look like a newspaper. The emphasis is on fish dishes, with plaice being a popular choice. Guests can sit outside on the banks of the canal during good weather. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Café with open-air terrace near the NDR broadcasting building |
Rothenbaumchaussee 137 Hamburg, Hamburg 20149 Germany +49 (0)40 44 4174 |
The Funk-Eck is a traditional café with a nice open-air terrace. It is located near both the Landesfunkhaus (broadcasting buidling) and the tennis courts at Rothenbaum. You can have a lovely breakfast here all day long, which is particularly enjoyable in sunny weather, along with the good service provided here and a daily paper to read through. Hamburg´s media people still appreciate this. In good weather the terrace stays open until 10pm. The café also has very tempting ice-cream and home-made cakes and gateaux with a large choice of coffees. In addition to a changing lunch special, there are hot and cold snacks on the menu, as well as a variety of traditional meals and dishes from the wok. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restaurant and café in the Sachsenwald |
Am Mühlenteich 2 Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein 21521 Germany |
The name of this restaurant (silence of the woods) at the mill pond in Aumühle can be taken literally, as you can walk right into the Sachsenwald forest from here. The traditional restaurant has a large terrace facing the pond, and lots of hunting trophies on the walls. Apart from a good meal you can also enjoy miniature golf and pedalo tours here. The Gasthaus offers local speciality cuisine. In the summer there are additional barbeque nights three times a week. The wine-list is excellent, and a cup of coffee or tea with a piece of cake is also delicious here - not just on a Sunday afternoon. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Regional cuisine with an international touch |
Elbchaussee 130 Hamburg, Hamburg 22763 Germany +49 (0)40 880 1325 http://www.landhausscherrer.de/ |
At home in a traditional country house which dates back to 1827, Landhaus Scherrer; named after the Scherrer family who have run it since 1976; is widely regarded as being one of the very best restaurants in town. The chef specializes in exquisite regional cuisine with an international touch, while the owner has made sure that the assortment of wine is equally exclusive. The majority of the clientèle are well-off locals. The bistro offers slightly less expensive dishes, which the chef prepares just as passionately as his specialty, vierländer duck. Unconventional ambience, sophisticated cuisine |
Neuer Pferdemarkt 5 Hamburg, h 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 439 7823 http://www.restaurant-nil.de |
The media crowd who patronise this establishment just love the fifties-style interior and unconventional ambience. Indeed, the setting-an old shoe shop-is a strange one for such sophisticated culinary creations. A team of skilled chefs treat guests to such delicacies as Tafelspitz (fillet of beef), exquisite fish dishes, gorgeous seasonal salads and scrumptious desserts. And not only is the quality good-the reasonable prices make this one of the best tips in town for bon viveurs. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hanseatic cuisine in a maritime ambience |
Englische Planke 10 Hamburg, Hamburg 20459 Germany +49 (0)40 36 6319 http://www.oldcommercialroom.de |
Fish and tradition are two very important words at the Old Commercial Room. This is the place to go for real Hanseatic specialities. The menu is translated into nine languages, definitely appreciated by all the international guests. The Old Commercial Room distinguishes itself by its interior. "Welcome on board" should actually be the first words spoken upon entering the place. A combination of mahogany wood, brass lamps and ship's accessories create a cosy maritime atmosphere. Above all else, Labskaus is a firm favourite and also a visual experience for newcomers here. Among other classic dishes, Pears, beans and bacon is highly recommended. Review © 2007, Wcities |

German and Chinese cuisine plus view over the Elbe |
Blankeneser Hauptstraße 107 Hamburg, Hamburg 22587 Germany +49 (0)40 86 1514 |
Up in the picturesque staircase district above the Strandweg in Blankenese, Sagebiel's Fährhaus can be found. From the river Elbe you can also reach it by climbing up a long staircase. And it is definitely worth the effort. In the summer you can dine outside on the spacious terrace with its old trees. In addition to an exquisite meal, you can enjoy a fantastic view over the Elbe from here, which even Wilhelm I appreciated in his day. There are two kitchens under one roof at Sagebiel's. On one hand they offer high-class traditional German dishes, while on the other hand Chinese specialities contribute an exotic flair. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Restaurant in a water tower |
Richard-Linde-Weg 21f Hamburg, Hamburg 21033 Germany +49 (0)40 730 3676 |
The restaurant with the funny name (Dickkopp = pighead) can be found in an old water tower in the Boberg dunes. Apart from plain cooking, it also offers live music during the summer months. A lot of day trippers take a break here, especially during the weekend. In the warmer months, the spacious garden becomes a popular extra room, because open-air concerts take place at the Dickkopp every other Saturday night. At the water tower itself, you can also enjoy readings or see exhibitions. From 7p-11:30p (half past midnight on weekends) the kitchen creates salads as well as the Dickkopp - an unleavened bread topped with cheese and lightly browned. The inexpensive cuisine is rather popular with young visitors. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The restaurant can also be booked for parties. An early morning visit to the Sunday fish market can be nicely rounded off with a large breakfast at Schuppen 20. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Große Elbstraße 39 Hamburg, Hamburg 22767 Germany +49 (0)40 38 2242 http://www.warsteiner-elbspeic... |
The Warsteiner Elbspeicher is located directly on the river Elbe. In the immediate neighbourhood of the Fischmarkt and the modern shopping temple Stilwerk it makes for a good location after a nice walk along the river or a shopping tour. In good weather you can dine on the open-air terrace and watch whatever is happening on the Elbe. But the grand harbour view can also be enjoyed from inside, and especially in typical Hamburg "Schmuddelwetter" (rainy weather) it is very cosy here. At the Elbspeicher, traditional Hamburg cuisine and tasty international dishes are available at slightly higher level prices. On Saturdays and Sundays there is a nice breakfast from 10am (9am Sun) to midday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Former customs post |
Zollenspieker Hauptdeich 143 Hamburg, Hamburg 21037 Germany +49 (0)40 793 1330 http://www.zollenspieker-faehr... |
The Zollenspieker Fährhaus is located in the lower Elbe region in the south-eastern part of Hamburg. Historical records prove that there has been a building in this important customs area since 1252. A timbered two-storey house was built here in 1621. This renaissance building served as a custom post until 1806. After that, steamboats from Lauenburg stopped here and contributed to a new development-the Zollenspieker Fährhaus turned into a popular day trip location and an annex with a ballroom was built. In 1961, the last regular steamboat service was closed. In the course of the 1990s, thorough renovation became necessary. Since then the Fährhaus has served as a café, restaurant and hotel. It is incredibly busy on sunny weekends, when cyclists, families and the ships of the Alstertourism Company stop here on their tours of the lower Elbe. The place is also very popular with cyclists. Apart from cakes and gateaux, the menu offers traditional seasonal fish dishes and plain cooking. Review © 2007, Wcities |
