House and R'n'B |
Spielbudenplatz 7 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 319 3215 |
This upmarket club has been in business for over 20 years, making it a firm fixture on Hamburg's nightlife circuit. The management briefly flirted with rock nights, but R'n'B, funk, soul, hip-hop and dance music now provide the main constituents of the programme. A large variety of drinks are on offer, all of which are slightly overpriced, but they certainly help you cool off after an hour or two on the dancefloor. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stars and starlets |
Rautenbergstraße 6-8 Hamburg, Hamburg 20099 Germany +49 (0)40 2805 4880 http://www.barhamburg.com/ |
Located between the Kempinski Hotel Atlantic and the red-light district around the station, this bar is a new addition to the scene, but has rapidly developed into one of the places to go out. If you're lucky, you may find yourself propping up the bar next to the likes of Mick Jagger or Bryan Adams. Otherwise, this place is full of Hamburg's rich and beautiful, sipping cocktails and digging into the tasty snacks served up in the basement restaurant. A host of DJs offer musical entertainment. Beer costs from EUR3, wine from EUR4. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Open-air café in the botanical gardens |
Gorch-Fock-Wall 4 Hamburg, Hamburg 20355 Germany +49 (0)40 34 0113 |
This open-air café certainly lives up to its name (meaning 'beautiful views'), situated as it is in the heart of the botanical gardens. It has a spacious terrace and is a café, beer garden and club, all in one. Visitors can come here for breakfast (or a buffet brunch on Saturdays); for coffee and cake in the afternoon; for dinner in the evening or groove to the sound of house and soul at night. There is an 'after work club' at 7p every other Thursday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic cocktail bar |
Pinnasberg 60 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany +49 (0)40 317 2863 http://www.christiansens.de |
If you are looking for something slightly different, then Christiansen's makes a pleasant change from the norm. The landlord is an old hand at rustling up cocktails, equally proficient at mixing classic drinks as he is at dreaming up exotic new creations. He will also happily help you with your choice. A great place to socialise, Christiansen's is a must for anyone on a pub crawl through St.Pauli, Hamburg's legendary nightlife district. Prices for drinks start at EUR2. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stylish and sophisticated |
Ballindamm 14-15 Hamburg, Hamburg 20095 Germany +49 (0)40 3250 8855 / +49 (0)40 3252 6060 http://www.ciudiebar.de/ |
This exclusive location is the perfect place to sit back, light up a cigar, and savour a cocktail or a glass of whisky. This is a bar of superlatives; even if you ignore the praise lavished upon it by the owner and staff, it's still difficult to find things to criticise. With leather sofas, black marble, colourful paintings, expensive mirrors and a wonderful view of the Inner Alster, the ambience is wonderful, as is the service. The prices are a different matter, but even they are justified. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hallowed ground |
Große Freiheit 36 Hamburg, Hamburg 22767 Germany +49 (0)40 3177 7811 http://www.grossefreiheit36.de |
Made famous by the Beatles in the early sixties, this establishment is sacred ground. Three decades later, the main hall of the Große Freiheit hosts bands like Beck, Tocotronic and the Cranberries. The Kaiserkeller is still a narrow basement club, full of atmosphere-Mondays features underground music; Tuesdays hip-hop, soul and house; Wednesdays new wave and punk; Thursdays indie and trip-hop; Fridays and Saturdays a mix of indie, rock, hip-hop and chart hits; Sundays oldies. Young and old rockers |
Große Freiheit 58 Hamburg, Hamburg 22767 Germany +49 (0)40 31 3616 http://www.gruenspan.de |
Hamburg's oldest concert venue hosts a variety of concerts from Sunday to Thursday. REM and Bryan Adams have honoured this place with their presence, and Sean Lennon has also hit the stage, just a few steps from where his famous father once played. From 10p at weekends, the dancefloor is crowded with young and old rockers, as well as other alternative types. The interior is decorated in burgundy and the atmosphere is pleasant. World class opera house and ballet |
Große Theaterstraße 34 Hamburg, Hamburg 20354 Germany +49 (0)40 35 6868 http://www.hamburgische-staats... |
One of the most famous opera houses in the world, Hamburg's Staatsoper attracts a host of international stars who perform pieces ranging from classical to contemporary. A small stage - the Opera Stablile - stages productions of new, experimental pieces. The building dates from the 1950s, but the opera itself was founded as long ago as 1678. The current musical director is Ingo Metzmacher, a darling of the critics and winner of numerous awards. The Hamburg Ballet is directed by John Neumeier, whose daring productions of modern ballets have audiences crying out for more. Review © 2007, Wcities |

One of the best venues in town |
Klosterwall 11 Hamburg, Hamburg 20095 Germany +49 (0)40 33 9491 http://www.markthalle-hamburg.de/ |
You could write a book about this concert hall if it didn't exist already: the book was published in 1997 to celebrate the Markthalle's 20th anniversary. Some of the biggest names in the business have played here, including the likes of Pavement, Sepultura, Supergrass, Tocotronic, Yoko Ono and Alanis Morisette. As well as a main hall, there are also two smaller venues which are used for club nights and festivities. A bar offers thirsty concert-goers a choice of refreshments. Check the local press or the homepage for details of upcoming events. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Jazz, soul & drum'n'bass |
Reeperbahn 1 Hamburg, Hamburg 20359 Germany http://www.mojo.de/ |
Located near the Operettenhaus, the Mojo is one of Hamburg's top clubs. Locals flock here every Saturday to boogie to the sounds of 'NuJazz' and soul. Wednesday is more chilled, with Café Abstrait or 'Etrema', while Friday features drum'n'bass rhythms spun by resident DJ Michael Sauer. Guest DJs, including many from abroad, also perform regularly. The clubbers are a mixed crew, including plenty of thirty-somethings. Videos and slide projections add to the atmosphere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

North German dialect at its best |
Große Bleichen 23-25 Hamburg 20354 Germany +49 (0)40 350 8030 http://www.ohnsorg.de/ |
The well-known Ohnsorg Theatre, named after its founder Dr. Richard Ohnsorg, hosts regular performances of folk plays, all of which are performed in "Low German" dialect. It is the only professional theatre in Germany to do so. Many pieces are broadcast on TV and radio by the North German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR). With a large ensemble and big names such as Heidi Kabel, Henry Vahl and Edgar Bessen, the Ohnsorg Theatre rarely disappoints. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bar with saxophone shaped beer tabs |
Holstenplatz 18 Hamburg, Hamburg 22765 Germany +49 (0)40 4325 1770 |
Despite its name, saxophones are not the only instruments played here. Musicians from the state opera and the operetta come here from time to time after performances to enjoy themselves and throw the odd jam session. Latin-American or saxophone music is the usual fare, and Friday is Salsa night, with lots of flirting and misbehaviour. An original visual detail within the interior are the saxophone-shaped beer tabs at this nice establishment. The barley juice first flows through the golden horn before it reaches the thirsty throats of the cheerful guests. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Although this place has long been an institution on the Reeperbahn, it has still retained its originality and intimate feel. Performances range from surreal plays, cabaret and comedy to independent projects. Patronized by locals and visitors alike, the monthly broadcast of the legendary "Schmidt Show" has made this place a household name and a starting point for young talent. Hamburg's oldest and largest theatre |
Alstertor Hamburg, Hamburg 20095 Germany +49 (0)40 3281 4444 http://www.thalia-theater.de |
Founded in 1843, the Thalia is Hamburg's oldest theatre and is still regarded as one of the best stages in the country. With an average of 357 performances and 250,000 visitors every year, the Thalia is by far and away the most popular theatre in the city and one of the largest in the country. It is also, in contrast to many other state-run theatres, highly profitable. The programme includes both classic and contemporary pieces. The present, neo-classical building was built in 1912 and is situated near the Alster. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The name says it all-the Tower Bar at the Hotel Hafen offers its guests majestic views over Hamburg's rooftops and harbour. Despite the slightly nondescript interior, the place is often packed with locals, students and the odd tourist. The Tower Bar is recommended for all those who want a bird's eye view of Hamburg, but aren't enthused by the uninviting TV Tower. Review © 2007, Wcities |
