The Zollenspieker Fährhaus is located in the lower Elbe region in the south-eastern part of Hamburg. Historical records prove that there has been a building in this important customs area since 1252. A timbered two-storey house was built here in 1621. This renaissance building served as a custom post until 1806. After that, steamboats from Lauenburg stopped here and contributed to a new development-the Zollenspieker Fährhaus turned into a popular day trip location and an annex with a ballroom was built. In 1961, the last regular steamboat service was closed. In the course of the 1990s, thorough renovation became necessary. Since then the Fährhaus has served as a café, restaurant and hotel. It is incredibly busy on sunny weekends, when cyclists, families and the ships of the Alstertourism Company stop here on their tours of the lower Elbe. The place is also very popular with cyclists. Apart from cakes and gateaux, the menu offers traditional seasonal fish dishes and plain cooking. Review © 2009, Wcities |
