Delectable island treats |
585 Hinano Street Hawaii, HI 96720 United States +1 808 935 8890 http://www.bigislandcandies.com/ |
If it is candy that you're after, there is more than enough to satisfy at this store. The hand-dipped chocolate macadamia nuts are a Hawaiian classic. Peanut butter bars and almond wafers are among the other tempting treats. But, while candy is the main attraction, it is not the only one. Buttery shortbread, rich Kona coffee, Mochi balls and a variety of other local specialty items are also available. Adventurous eaters will want to sample some of the local munchies: try the Li Hing Mui cookies (made with sour plum powder) or the Ika (dried squid). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cheap coffee and local products |
26 1/2 Mile Marker, Old Volcano Highway Hawaii, HI 96785 United States |
Tourists come here to stock up on locally made Poha and Ohelo berry jams, but locals know the real lure of the place: coffee at 75 cents a cup. That may seem only reasonable in the home of Kona coffee, but at neighboring places it ranges from $1.50 to $2.50 a cup. Coffee by the pound, soft drinks, liquor, snacks and other necessities and sundries can be purchased here. The store is also a gas station and general hang-out spot. It's family owned and authentic, taking pains to promote local artists and crafters. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great selection of wine and more |
75-5626 Kuakini Highway Hawaii, HI 96740 United States +1 808 329 9400 http://www.konawinemarket.com/ |
Wine drinkers will love this store. Medium-sized and easy to navigate, the store sells thousands of vintages, brews and liquors, including wines from the Volcano Winery. It also sells delicious gourmet foods to accompany any beverage. The sales staff is friendly and down-to-earth. The shop is located in the charming King Kamehameha Mall, which is not to be confused with the shopping center of the same name located in the King Kam Hotel a block away. Signs advertise it to road and pedestrian traffic on the busy thoroughfare outside. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gourmands and sweet tooths (or is that sweet teeth?) won't want to miss this one. It is a bakery so large and famous that it's a genuine landmark. After viewing the commercial bakery, guests are invited to sample the end product: fresh-baked bread that has become an island institution. Cookies and other treats are also available to sample. Once tastebuds are whetted, stop at the lunch counter for sandwiches, ice cream, cookies and more. The gorgeous tropical gardens that surround the bakery are open to the public, and a picnic area is available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Truly exotic flavors |
35 Pi'i Mauna Drive Hawaii, HI 96785 United States +1 808 967 7772 http://www.volcanowinery.com/ |
The Big Island's only winery offers a sampling of the genuinely exotic. If you are taking a day trip to upcountry Volcano or if you are staying in the area, it is an opportunity to tour the grounds and enjoy a tasting. The scenery here is unparalleled: at the 4,000-feet elevation, you have views of two volcanoes. The atmosphere is relaxed but refined. Wine tastings are available every day of the year, be sure to check out their website or call beforehand to check on current wine tasting times. House specialties include Lehua Blossom Honey Wine, fruit wines, such as Passion Chablis, and the ever-popular Macadamia Nut Honey Wine. Take a few bottles home; they make great gifts.
