Hundreds of Hawaiian-made products |
75-5660 Palani Road Hawaii, HI 96740 United States +1 808 326 4949 |
This store's grand opening is no doubt very exciting for local crafters. As a giant sign in front of the main building proclaims, the warehouse-sized shop is full of "all island products under one roof!" Everything from coffee and coconuts to paperweights and gift calendars is for sale. Plenty of island-made soaps and lotions give the air a pleasant fragrance. The store manages to escape the tacky atmosphere that many souvenir stores have, and instead just seems like a crafter's warehouse. It is located inside the King Kamehameha Hotel, just behind the main lobby. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Island tees for everyone |
Kona Marketplace Hawaii, HI 96743 United States +1 808 329 2176 |
This popular T-shirt retailer is a favorite souvenir stop all over the islands. In addition to the Kona Marketplace store, there are a number of stores on Maui and O'ahu. The styles sold here are much less flamboyant than those found on O'ahu. Most of them are sporty and utilitarian, the kind of shirts that can be worn just about anywhere in a beach town. In addition to T-shirts, the store sells sweatshirts, shorts and men's and women's surfwear. Review © 2007, Wcities |

All kinds of top-shelf liquors and designer accessories and cosmetics can be purchased, at what the store guarantees international visitors is the "lowest price in Hawaii." While it's primarily a store for foreign tourists, DFS is striving to expand its market to U.S. citizens. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Highway 180 Hawaii, HI 96740 United States +1 808 322 8484 http://www.holualoahawaii.com/ |
The little settlement of Holualoa was founded as an agricultural center, but has evolved into what many consider to be the artistic center of the Big Island. Artists from around the world have gathered here, inspired by the beauty and the serenity of the island. You will find a multitude of galleries open daily on the main street. Take a moment in between viewings to relax over a cup of Kona coffee; after all, it did make the region famous. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional Hawaiian craftworks |
74-5599 Luhiai Street Unit F-5 Hawaii, HI 96740 United States +1 808 326 9583 http://www.hulalamps.com |
Modeled after the distinctive hula-girl lamps made in the 1920s through the 1940s, these impressive bronze lamps are the perfect combination of kitsch and art. A bronze woman stands on her toes atop a stand, hands to her sides and a painted lampshade on top of her head. Sounds funny? It is...a little bit. But the superior craftsmanship that goes into these works makes them more than a silly souvenir. They look like something that could have been found in Hilo Hattie's about 50 years ago. Other designs incorporate surfers, ukuleles, palm trees and other classic images from Hawaiian pop culture. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Going after the biggest fish |
76-6247 Kupuna Street Hawaii, HI 96740 United States +1 808 329 6303 |
This charter company holds the record for the largest Mako Shark ever caught. While most people can not expect to reel in a 1,200 pound monster the likes of that one, fish between 30-100 pounds are caught regularly. Fishermen can expect to hook marlin, mahi, tuna and wahoo among others. The spacious boat is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and live bait fishing is the norm. It regularly outfishes all the other teams in the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cute and central shopping center |
75-5699 Ali'i Drive Hawaii, HI 96740 United States |
Style-wise, this shopping center has a bit more personality than its neighbors. It is dark brown with green trim. It looks as though the builders stacked one building on top of another in the same way that children stack blocks. A pretty little cobblestone path leads up from the main street. The ocean can be seen from the front of the center. There are a number of interesting shops here, including The Toybox, Scenic Gallery and Ferrari Kona Coffee. Aki's Café is a good place to grab a quick bite. Review © 2007, Wcities |

While this shopping center isn't in the center of any tourist district, it caters in part to the tourist contingent, as evidenced by the free shopping shuttle and the advertisements in weekly magazines. However, it's still appealing to locals, thanks to the presence of numerous practical retailers and business services. A chiropracter, real estate office and post office are onsite. Retailers include Liberty House, Alapaki's and Bad Ass Coffee. Formal restaurants, snack shops and a shave ice stand are also on the premises. Credit card acceptance varies by merchant. Quaint and fun open-air mall |
75-5626 Kuakini Highway Hawaii, HI 96740 United States |
This shopping mall is not to be confused with the King Kamehameha Shopping Center, located inside the King Kam Hotel. A free-standing building of odd but charming design, it is home to many local shops and restaurants. There is a roof over everything but no real walls, giving things an open-air feel. One of the best shops is the Kona Wine Market. Watabe Wedding and Nature Walk are also onsite. Eateries include Bangkok House Thai and Ocean Seafood, a Chinese buffet-style eatery. Credit card acceptance varies by business. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Look for the banyan tree |
75-5695 Ali'i Drive Hawaii, HI 96740 United States |
Located next to the old Seaside Hotel property, this pleasant shopping center is named after the old banyan tree that sits on the beach walk just outside. Mostly upscale shops are located onsite, among them Big Island Jewelers and the Pearl Gallery. A hair salon and a toy store are also on the premises. The main draw may be Sibu Café, a very popular Indonesian restaurant that's known to be one of the best bargains in town. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Barely a quarter mile into Kona-Kailua Town one sees the turn-off to this shopping center. An unglamorous strip-mall reminiscent of mainland shopping centers, it is nevertheless a favorite of locals. Independent shops such as Kona Flowers and Don's Chinese Kitchen are next door to national giants such as Radio Shack and Ross. The spacious Starbucks in front provides a sunny patio from which shoppers can contemplate the flow of traffic while sipping frappuccinos and the like. Credit card acceptance varies by business. Upscale mall in a former hotel |
75-5744 Ali'i Drive Hawaii, HI 96740 United States +1 808 329 6573 |
The former Kona Inn has been transformed into a stylish, classy shopping center. More than 50 shops and eateries are housed in all the buildings of the former hotel. The mall occupies a prime strip of oceanfront property across the street from the Kona Marketplace. Stores include Island Life, Toejam, Kona Inn Jewelry and Overboard Swimwear. The Kona Coffee Cafe is a great place to get a cup o' joe, island-style. Church services are held by the sea every Sunday. Credit card acceptance policies vary by merchant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dozens of stores |
75-5719 Ali'i Drive Hawaii, HI 96740 United States |
Located next to the Kona Plaza, this shopping mall is housed inside a sensible, rectangular, two-story building. Several dozen shops and eateries are inside, including Mango, Kim Taylor Reece and Hawaiian favorite Crazy Shirts. Pancho & Lefty's, a loud, casual Mexican eatery that's also on Maui, is located on the second story in the center of the mall. Further down is the Kona Petroleum Grill, a new sports bar. Shopping by the sea |
75-5663 Palani Road Hawaii, HI 96740 United States |
Seen from the side, this shopping center looks small, but there is actually a surprising number of stores inside it. Most of them are souvenir or jewelry shops, the most easily recognizable being Eelskin Liquidators (they advertise all over town). Nature's Garden Gallery and Goldfish Jewelry are also onsite, and the Kona Galley is on the second floor. The shops are spread out, not all under one roof. Credit card acceptance policies vary by merchant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great selection of wine and more |
75-5626 Kuakini Highway Hawaii, HI 96740 United States +1 808 329 9400 http://www.konawinemarket.com/ |
Wine drinkers will love this store. Medium-sized and easy to navigate, the store sells thousands of vintages, brews and liquors, including wines from the Volcano Winery. It also sells delicious gourmet foods to accompany any beverage. The sales staff is friendly and down-to-earth. The shop is located in the charming King Kamehameha Mall, which is not to be confused with the shopping center of the same name located in the King Kam Hotel a block away. Signs advertise it to road and pedestrian traffic on the busy thoroughfare outside. Review © 2007, Wcities |

While some of the stores and services at this center cater strictly to locals, others have gained quite a reputation among the tourist crowds. Buns in the Sun, for example, is known to be among the best bakeries on the island and is featured in quite a few travel publications. Also aimed toward tourists are the two galleries here: Royal Hawaiian Heritage Jewelry and Kailua Village Artist's Gallery. On the practical side you'll find Sack & Save, Long's Drugs, a travel agency and two banks. L&L Drive-Inn is a favorite eataery. Review © 2007, Wcities |
