Bus anyone? |
Asema-aukio Helsinki, Southern Finland 00100 Finland +358 9 2319 2902 http://www.vr.fi/ |
Considering its impressive surroundings, and the fact that it is in the capital, Helsinki Railway Station can well be called the main station of the whole country. This is definitely the best place to start your journey in Finland. The station area is right in the centre of the city, within walking distance of many attractions and hotels. On the whole, the area is rather like a shopping centre with all kinds of services available, from restaurants to markets. Train schedules, and also Helsinki bus and tram schedules, can be found in the Main hall. The information office is in Asematunneli. For those who are heading to the airport, the Finnair buses leave from Elielinaukio, the area between the station and the Post office. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Flying from Helsinki |
9.7 kilometres North of Helsinki Helsinki, Southern Finland 01531 Finland +358 9 8 2771 / +358 9 6 1511 http://www.helsinki-vantaa.fi/ |
Helsinki-Vantaa airport has been ranked among the best airports in the world three years in a row in IATA surveys. Such a high evaluation doesn't come easy. Annually, the airport has over ten million passengers. Globally, Helsinki is centrally located: It takes eight hours to fly to New York and seven and a half to Peking. Regardless of its busy schedule, Helsinki-Vantaa airport retains a certain characteristic that is unusual for an international airport these days: it makes sense. For an airport, it isn't too big, or too small. Quite simply, this is what makes it practical and so well liked. There are five special parking areas (P1, P2, P3, P4 and P5) that are open 24hrs a day. P1 is closest to the International terminal but there are certain limitations on how long a car can be parked there. P2 is good for long-term parking. You can pay the fees in two ways: Either at the service points or at the machines in the terminal. You can also pay with a credit card at the service points. The best way to get out of the airport area is certainly by taxi. The ride to downtown Helsinki takes about 30 minutes. Some taxis have fixed group prices. On the whole, it shouldn't be too difficult to get a taxi outside the arrivals terminals. Buses are another option and the stops can also be found fairly easily outside the terminals or the ground floor. Naturally, depending on your destination the schedules vary, so it might get a bit tricky there. The easiest choice would be Finnair buses (airport-downtown-airport). There are special kinds of trolleys and carts available for the use of passengers with large amounts of baggage. Other than that, the easiest and fastest way to move around is on foot. There is certainly no shortage of restaurants and bars. For something simple and fast, try Carroll's, a 24-hour hamburger restaurant on the public concourse. In international departure hall 3 the Fly Inn offers great meals with a fantastic runway view: a good restaurant for the whole family. For something smaller and simpler, like coffee and fresh pastries, stop at Café Aleksanteri in the same departure hall. In the domestic terminal, á la carte restaurant Intermezzo should have something for everyone. There are also private rooms for conferences available here. Beyond the usual fears of missing your flight, you shouldn't find Helsinki–Vantaa any more frustrating than any other busy international airport. You can always ask for guidance from the Terminal Guides if necessary – you'll recognise them from their yellow and violet uniforms. The service is free. In the international terminal public concourse, there are all kinds of services available – from an airport pharmacy to grocery shops. The duty free shops and the more specialised stores, such as those selling jewellery and clothes, can be found in the transit area. Car hire is also available in the international terminal. For meditation and prayer, a quiet room is available for all religious denominations in the transit area. Review © 2007, Wcities |
