Take a Stroll |
Aleksanterinkatu Helsinki Finland |
Aleksanterinkatu, also known by locals as "Aleksi," is great street for shopping. Aleksanterinkatu starts near the Presidential Palace and crosses by Senate Square. Stroll down Aleksanterinkatu for some great stores, such as Feminett, Stockmann and Kiseleffin Basaari. Aleksanterinkatu is also brightly lit with elaborate lights during the Holiday season. Inexpensive department store chain |
6 Kaivokatu Salomonkatu 13 Helsinki 00100 Finland +358 9 1053 4500 http://www.anttila.fi/ |
Anttila started as a mail order company in the 1950s. Since then it has succesfully managed to compete with the other department stores, mainly by way of its affordable prices rather than quality or top brands. In Anttila you will find clothes for the whole family, music, electronics, household and sporting equipment, and cosmetics. Especially inexpensive, everyday items such as toiletries are worth getting from Anttila. Anttila is situated just opposite the central railway station, and you can get to it through the tunnel under the railway station. There are Anttila stores also in Itäkeskus and the new Jumbo centre. Shopping centre in Vuosaari |
45 Vuotie Helsinki 00980 Finland +358 9 2706 1155 http://www.kauppakeskuscolumbu... |
Columbus is not as big as Itäkeskus but it is still a reasonably good shopping centre, located in Vuosaari. The centre contains supermarkets, clothing shops and technical equipment. The Ihme ja Kumma toy department store is the children's favourite shop. In the same building are also restaurants, a pharmacy and a hairdresser. You can get to Columbus on a metro from Helsinki central railway station to Vuosaari; it is right next to the station. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A multitude of shops in the centre |
20 Mannerheimintie Helsinki 00100 Finland +358 (09) 565 7450 http://www.cityforum.fi |
Forum shopping centre is right in the heart of the city, next to the Kamppi bus station on Mannerheimintie. Here you will find all the major clothing and shoe shops, such as Seppälä, Vero Moda, Andiamo, Vaatehuone, Kapp Ahl, H&M and Pierre Cavallo. The lower ground floor contains several burger and other restaurants, cafés, a wine bar, a sweet shop and a supermarket. One of the places worth mentioning is the Fazer café, an excellent place to arrange a meeting or to have lunch and watch the passers-by. A tunnel connects Forum to the Stockmann and Sokos department stores and the central railway station—this is handy especially during the winter. The opening hours of the shops and restaurants vary. Suburban shopping paradise |
1-4 A 44 Itäkatu Helsinki 00930 Finland +358 9 343 1005 http://www.itakeskuskauppakesk... |
Itäkeskus is a large shopping centre popular among the residents of the eastern side of Helsinki. Itäkeskus is like a city in itself, with its Boulevards and Tallinn Square. Here you can find branches of all the biggest chains like Hennes&Mauritz, Stockmann, Anttila, Body Shop, Vero Moda and Jack & Jones. There is also an excellent selection of restaurants, a big supermarket, a cinema, hairdressers and beauty parlours, even a little amusement park for children. Various events and markets are arranged here. The best way to get to Itäkeskus from the Helsinki city centre is to take an eastbound metro from the Central Railway Station; the shopping centre has its own stop. Review © 2007, Wcities |

High quality for a price |
2 C Asema-aukio Helsinki 00100 Finland +358 9 1076 5000 http://www.sokos.fi |
Sokos is one of the two big department stores in the Helsinki city centre. Opened in 1952, the year in which Helsinki hosted the Summer Olympics, Sokos has always been located in the heart of the city, between Mannerheimintie and the central railway station. Prices are a bit higher at Sokos than at its major competitor, Stockmann. The selection is smaller than that of Stockmann but you can find many top brands and quality products here. Especially the cosmetics section is good, with high-quality products. Sokos also has quality brands in clothes and various home accessories. In the same building there is a supermarket, a hotel and a restaurant. Review © 2007, Wcities |
