Near Hanauma Bay and the Kahala Mandarin, this bed & breakfast is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu. It's only a short drive away from Waikiki, but the atmosphere is light-years away from frenetic Waikiki. Rooms are comfortable and cozy, and are equipped with great modern amenities including a modem line. This is very much a local, family-owned operation. There are no set check-in and check-out times, and the proprietress runs a number of other small businesses and rents out other guest homes.

Prices start at $3,000 per month.

Halekulani means House of Heaven and is a very appropriate description. High-rise towers and low-rise bungalows are perched in lush splendor above Waikiki Beach. The service is attentive and the surroundings are tropically grand. The estate was originally built in 1917. It was converted from a private beachfront estate to an exclusive visitors' paradise in the 1930s. If you visit on a Wednesday, receive an invitation to the Manager's Cocktail Reception. While the main selling point of this hotel is its location (practically on the grounds of Honolulu International Airport), it has more things going for it than that. Accommodations are comfortable and well-equipped, and guest services are more than adequate. An on site restaurant serves three meals a day, and a shuttle transports guests from the hotel to Waikiki, Pearl Harbor ad other Honolulu hot spots. Earlier known as the Diamond Head View Hotel, this hotel is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Wakiki. It has an atmosphere of understated elegance and warmhearted aloha. It caters to visitors seeking a quiet, peaceful stay close to beaches, tennis courts and fine dining. With only 10 suites and one penthouse, it is often booked up for months in advance. This is especially true during Hawaii's peak seasons. Every suite has a well-appointed kitchenette and a private lanai with unobstructed views of Oahu's most famous landmark, Diamond Head crater.

Overlooking the beautiful 108-acre Kapiolani Park, this high-rise has one of the best views of Diamond Head in Waikiki. It was built in 1959 and totally renovated in 1989. If you are into golf, this is a good place to stay, as the Ala Wai Golf course is just a few blocks away. Guests have access to nearby tennis courts, and the hotel sports a large swimming pool on the third floor deck. As you might expect from a large hotel, there are three choices for dining and drinking. The rooms are good sized, comfortable and clean. The decor is a bit dated but all in all, the place is well kept.

The so-called "Pink Palace of the Pacific" opened its doors in 1927 and has been a favorite for the international set ever since. Although there have been many renovations in its more than 70 years of operation, the hotel and grounds have remained graceful, relaxed and very Hawaiian. In one wing, each room comes with a private lanai, canopied bed and Queen Anne-style writing desk. The most luxurious accommodations, the Prestige Suites, are truly magnificent. This is one of two original Waikiki hotels, and it still retains the feeling of Old Waikiki.
