Located less than a block from Waikiki Beach and the same distance from the elegant shops on Kalakaua Avenue, this hotel is right in the middle of it all. It's a different kind of place from the high-rises that surround it. Six low-rise buildings surround a pool and sundeck. The interior is comfortable if simple, with a relaxed, informal ambiance. Each unit offers an individual kitchenette. Medium-sized families may want to rent out one of the Garden Suites, which can accommodate a maximum of five persons.

Discovery Bay

Skyrise on the outskirt of Waikiki
1778 Ala Moana Blvd
Honolulu, HI 96815
United States
An impressive structure that sits smack-dab in between Waikiki and Ala Moana, this building is practically a district in itself. With a two-story shopping mall and several restaurants on-site, it offers plenty of guest services and activities. Amenities aren't too shabby either; units are furnished with washer/dryers and full kitchens. Ocean views are the standard.

This is a long-term accommodation, available for one month, minimum. It doesn't really qualify as a money-saving option, but families or groups with plenty to spend on accommodations will be happy in the elegant, spacious units.

Several rental and realty firms handle the different units. Some good ones to try are Hawaiian Properties (+1 808 955 3341), Waikiki Suites (http://www.waikikisuites.com) and Discovery Bay Realty (+1 808 946 3370).

Prices start at $3,000 per month.

Halekulani means House of Heaven and is a very appropriate description. High-rise towers and low-rise bungalows are perched in lush splendor above Waikiki Beach. The service is attentive and the surroundings are tropically grand. The estate was originally built in 1917. It was converted from a private beachfront estate to an exclusive visitors' paradise in the 1930s. If you visit on a Wednesday, receive an invitation to the Manager's Cocktail Reception. This party rivals the planned gatherings of the best cruise ships.

This has been one of Hawaii's best hotel complexes for more than 45 years. Two towers, Tapa and Rainbow, are set in a huge garden paradise of tropical plants and wildlife and the Ali'i Tower is where guests are given the old-fashioned royal treatment. World-class shops, including the famous jewelry store Na Hoku and restaurants complement one of Hilton's finest efforts. The complex has a magnificent two-tiered pool and a luxuriant spa. As its name implies, this hotel sits right at the start of the famous Waikiki Beach district. Many visitors think the location is one of the best in Honolulu, especially now that Hawaii's new convention center has opened two blocks away. This is what the management calls a "no nonsense place," but that doesn't mean cheap or tacky. The rooms are of ample size and very comfortable. The staff is friendly without being pushy, and families are welcome. The understated and lovely lobby makes a great first impression. There is an activities desk where guests can book snorkeling, boating and other activities. One of Honolulu's finest seafood eateries, Nick's Fishmarket, is on the ground floor.
