Banzai Sushi Bar

Fresh from the North Shore
66-246 Kamehameha Highway
North Shore Marketplace
Honolulu, HI 96712
United States
+1 808 637 4404
Mix a casual, carefree attitude with fresh fish and you get the Banzai Sushi Bar. The open-air atmosphere with cushions on the floor for seating is what separates this place from all other Japanese sushi bars. On one side is a screen where movies are shown on the weekends, on the other are surfboards hanging from the rafters. The specialties of the house are the creative sushi rolls such as the Lemon Drop, a spicy tuna sushi roll topped with a slice of white fish, ponzu sauce, and a sliver of lemon peel. Moderately priced, nigiri ranges from $3.25 to 6.95 an order, while sushi rolls range from $4.25 to 14.25. Be ready to kick off your shoes and enjoy the flow. -Kim Fujiwara

Haleiwa Joe's

Pig out
66-011, Kamehameha Highway
Honolulu, HI 96712

Of the two restaurants in Haleiwa that hug the coastline, Haleiwa Joe's is one. The decor is modern Poleynesian, but the food is largely traditional Hawaiian with fresh catch. They also serve up a pretty mean stake, as also delectable sashimi. The must try at Haleiwa Joe's is the luau lumpia (Kahlua pig, pineapple, sweet Thai sauce), black & blue ahi (seared Ahi with wasabi-ranch sauce) and the paradise pupu platter (sushi, ceviche, luau lumpia and sticky ribs). It's not just the names that are a mouthful!

Kua 'Aina Sandwich Shop has gained so much popularity that apart from this and the one in Ala Moana they've opened stores in L.A as well as in Japan. Popular with locals and tourists alike, Kua 'Aina has been is business for over two decades. The serve a no frills burger and fries, but htis is what gets people here time and time again. The Hawaiian style pineapple burgers are an attraction and the regular burgers heaped with bacon, cheese and salsa, even the mahimahi sandwich have their regular fan following.

Matsumoto's Shave Ice

A Treat for the Young, Old, and Famous!
66-087 Kamehameha Hwy
Honolulu, HI 96712
United States

http://www.matsumotoshaveice.com/
Among the many, always welcome visitors, Matsumoto's has hosted movie stars, rock stars, pro-athletes and more. Photos of Adam Sandler and others hang on the walls. Shaved ice is a Hawaiian tradition, and nobody does it better than Matsumoto's. This is no snow cone; it comes in dozens of tasty flavors and a wide variety of add-on items. Lines are long, but it's well worth the wait. Try ice cream on the bottom, it's a local favorite. They have an old-town style retail shop for all sorts of things Hawaiian, like shirts and stickers. You can also check out their online shop. Their catch phrase is "the coolest place on the North Shore" and trust me, you'll agree. -Rex Davidson

Waialua Bakery

Just around the corner
66-200, Kamehameha Highway
Honolulu, HI 96712
United States
+1 808 637 9079
Waialua Bakery is in an old house in the historic district of North Shore. The bakery has a variety of specialty breads, sandwiches and smoothies. What it also has are vegetarian specialties, including a hummus spread. The Waialua Bakery used to be across the road from Fujioka, but the latter shut it's doors after 90 years of service to make way for the IGA Haleiwa Supermarket. So if ever in the neighborhood looking for a snack, give the Waialua Bakery a shot. It's not just a slice of bread you're eating at this mom-and-pop store, it's a slice of authentic Hawaii that may not exists the next time you come this way.
