The selection of souvenir and gift items in this store is impressive, to say the least. The owners take pride in finding merchandise that can't be found in other stores. In a city like Honolulu - especially in a mall like the Ala Moana Shopping Center - that's quite a challenge. However, they succeed fairly well. Some very lifelike replicas of 20th-century guns are displayed behind the counter. Dyed leather wallets are functional and unusual. Hawaiian checkers will intrigue game players. All the top designers (Givenchy, Celine, Cartier, Louis Vuitton) have prominent displays in this enormous store's second floor, which is open to everyone. The store is a 'must-see' for visitors from other countries, who can enjoy substantial savings on everything from liquor to tobacco products to designer cosmetics. The dust is still settling from extensive renovations. The new and improved DFS Waikiki seems to be the same size as a small Polynesian village. While that's a bit of an exaggeration, it is an enormous space, three floors high and half a block wide. The customers are from all different parts of the world. The opposite of neighboring boutique Handblock in almost every way, this modern, clean-edged store is a great place to shop for masculine gifts. It caters to men who live 'the good life', offering a wide array of pleasure items including humidors, cigar cutters, top-shelf Scotch, designer cologne and so forth. The clientele and decor are both urbane and sophisticated. There isn't an excess of merchandise; it's as though the buyer knew what he liked and didn't bother with anything else. The latest craze in tourist transportation in Honolulu is the open-air cable car, originally made famous in foggy San Francisco. This version is on wheels instead of tracks. It is one of a few trolley services operating on O'ahu. It stops at 30 tourist hot spots throughout Honolulu. Trolleys run every 20 minutes. The published price is USD10 for an all-day pass, but coupons are available in many guide books. Purchase tickets from trolley drivers, tour desks or the main office. This has been a place to find great Aloha wear for more than half a century. Hawaiian shirts have long been a favorite item for visitors and locals alike, and this shop has a huge selection of the colorful tops. Check out the retro section, where you will find the styles and patterns of old Hawai'i. There is also a large selection of sun-dresses and footwear. The store has a special fabric called Reyn Spooner rayon that has easy-to-care-for properties and looks great. This large gallery not far from the Honolulu Academy of Arts specializes in Oriental and Oceanic art and antiques.
