This Saturday market is the, "original" of the very popular People's Open Markets. Bring your own bags and small bills; it makes market shopping easier on you and the merchants. As part of the POM program, fruits, vegetables and seafood sold here are guaranteed to cost at least 35 percent below retail value. The market only lasts one hour and fifteen minutes, so arriving on time is important. This location is best reached by car. Parking is available on the street and on church grounds (compliments of St. Elizabeth's and Kaumakapili churches). Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is a unique and beautiful space, appropriate to the exotic jewels it houses. The island-themed paintings, high ceilings and indoor plants are elegantly tropical, providing the perfect backdrop for the black pearl pieces on display. Harvested at the pearl farms in Tahiti, these lustrous gems of the sea are a thousand times more striking than their creamy cousins. The settings at this store range from delicate to showy, while the pearls vary in size but not in quality. Located in the Aloha Tower Marketplace. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This one of two places in the Aloha Tower where you can get an iced latte to go. Naturally it is an important and popular spot, frequented by tourists and locals in need of a kick start. Absolutely beautiful dresses for little girls are sold here. Designed by artists, made of lace and satin, and accessorized by pearl chokers and tiny sunhats, these garments are intended for very special occasions. The women's clothing is a bit more utilitarian; the batik prints and lace tops could conceivably be worn to upscale-casual social events. Crafts, toys, accessories and home accents, designed by local artists, are also sold at this store in the Aloha Tower Marketplace. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For a state known more for its ukuleles, a drum store that's been in business 15 years and counting would have to have really tolerant neighbors. The truth of the matter is, Drummers Warehouse is a comprehensive one of a kind drum, drum accessories and percussion store in Honolulu. The sales staff is knowledgeable, some of them musicians in local bands and the selection is vast. Stocking everything from acoustic kits to electric ones, cymbals and even percussion instruments like bongos, congas and djembes, it's every musician's paradise. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located in Chinatown, this small, unassuming shop is one of the sources for fine jewelry in Honolulu. Like its neighbors, it is run by Chinese locals and caters to a select group of people. The owners are friendly to visitors from outside Chinatown. The wares are high quality, and many of the designs are quite complex. Gold set with pearls and gems, fine enamel plates, delicate name bracelets and other items are displayed. While prices are comparatively low, they are definitely nothing to take lightly. While certain countries might not realize it, their flag is flying in America all the time. True, it might only be the size of a postcard, but it's represented in this store in Honolulu's Ward Center. Hundreds of different flags are available, in at least one of several styles. There are postcards, stickers, little mini-flags that can hang from just about anywhere and full-size ones that look like they belong on the roof of a foreign embassy. This store probably goes in and out of popularity. Sometimes people want to show spirit and solidarity; sometimes they don't. However, thanks to its ideal location in one of Honolulu's greatest shopping areas, it gets ample walk-in traffic at all times of the year. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The store named for the famous Hawaiian singer and entertainer has become the place to buy island-style clothing. It has one of the largest collections of the popular aloha shirts in the islands, as well as more than 70 styles of dresses. Some apparel is manufactured by the Hilo Hattie Company and some is purchased from other sources. Prices here are competitive and the quality is generally good. You can buy macadamia nuts and Hawaiian chocolate in the food section. The atmosphere tends to be busy to the point of insanity. Hostesses greet shoppers at the door, shell leis in hand. Tourists bump about the aisles in search of a fabulous deal. Slack-key issues from the stereo, and dozens of tourists enter and exit from all directions. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Made up of several dozen ramshackle stalls and about a dozen formal stores, this place is very much of a local hangout. It spans two floors, and is arranged around a sunny courtyard. The focal point of this jewelry shop is a stunning hollowed-out chunk of amethyst that weighs in at 1,200 pounds and is large enough for a normal person to sit in. While it is in fact for sale, it's not really representative of the merchandise usually on offer at this store. Paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys) actually shop in this store, although they're usually just looking for a sturdy pair of boots or jeans.
