Honolulu, HI 96815-2543

This spacious, upbeat store occupies a corner of the Waikiki Shopping Plaza that faces out onto Kalakaua Avenue. It is busy but not crazy, and the local staff is friendly and helpful. The clothing is mostly appropriate for the beach. There are a lot of shorts, t-shirts and tanktops on display. In a place such as Hawai'i, where streetwear, beachwear, sportswear and resortwear are interchangeable, the apparel sold here is appropriate for any occasion short of a five-star dinner.

This is haute fashion, with prices to match: a simple jacket can cost several hundred dollars. Namba's designs are featured in stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf-Goodman, and Nordstrom, but this Manoa Valley boutique is the source.

Specializing in "vintage Aloha wear", this store offers upscale resortwear for men and women. The patterns are more akin to the Hawaiian styles of 40 years ago than the loud fashions of today. The distinguishing feature of the garments is the fabric. They're made of very thin silk, cool on the body and more form-flattering than cotton or polyester. Even if you don't like prints or you don't wear dresses, you'll probably be somewhat tempted to try one of these garments on for size.

One of Honolulu's best-known purveyors of Hawaiiana and collectibles, this funky store on the fringe of Waikiki claims to carry the world's largest selection of vintage Aloha shirts. Perfect-condition collector's items from the heyday of Aloha shirts (the 1930s to 1950s) easily fetch $500 and up, and stylish "vintage reproductions" cost $30 to $100, but you can also find wearable second-hand shirts for around $20. Other collectibles include old Zippo lighters, kitschy 1950s knick-knacks and World War II memorabilia. A stuffed gorilla in a grass skirt stands at attention outside.

In a place like Waikiki, where the beach is always just a few blocks away, shops like this one will always be a hit. Selling swimwear, beachwear and accessories for all ages and sizes, this store caters to anyone who wants to look good for the Hawai'i beaches. The clothing sold here is flimsy, filmy and eye-catching. While it could be worn during the hottest months of summer on the mainland, it's best suited to balmy, humid Honolulu, where almost no one hesitates to strip down.

No one can accuse this designer of not having a sense of humor. There is a full line of goofy shirts featuring all the favorite teen pop stars, Big Dog-style. The drawings of the lovely Barkney Spears and Christina Waguilera are hilarious, yet eerily resemblant of the famous namesakes. The other side of this store features utilitarian fashions for the beach and outdoors. They're preppy yet sporty, perfect for all ages. This is a unique and beautiful space, appropriate to the exotic jewels it houses. The island-themed paintings, high ceilings and indoor plants are elegantly tropical, providing the perfect backdrop for the black pearl pieces on display. Harvested at the pearl farms in Tahiti, these lustrous gems of the sea are a thousand times more striking than their creamy cousins. You can actually outfit an entire family, from infants on up to grandfathers, at this popular island clothing retailer. Somehow, in spite of the store's bent toward blues and purples, men can wear the styles without looking too silly. They're great for women, of course: flowing, graceful, vivid and picturesque. Pastel solids and simple prints are used to create the clothing line. Accessories are also sold. There is a second Blue Ginger at 227 Lewers Street in Waikiki, as well as a few stores on Maui.

This store provides an alternative to the loud, busily patterned garments that often seem to define Hawaiian style. The clothing here is decidedly tropical (in fact, much of it was made locally), but it is more subtle and easy on the eye. Pastel floral patterns are handpainted on raw silk to create soft, simple styles. Other garments feature batik patterns or solid pastel coloring. The garments all feature flowing, feminine lines. Wooden and glass beads accessorise the fashions perfectly.

This shop is the most recent incarnation of the establishment Thomas Burberry opened in 1856 in Hampshire, England. The original store began with a high commitment to innovative fabric and outerwear design, and that continues to be true of the chain today. This location, in Honolulu's fashionable Ala Moana Shopping Center, is typical of all Burberry shops, but you'll find the winter clothing line a little sparse, for obvious reasons. The company motto is Porsum, which translates from the Latin as "forward" and reflects the momentum of this Ala Moana store.

This shop is small yet striking - standard for Cartier. Decorated all in black and gold, the place is a study in sheer elegance. The understated, minimalist displays only accentuate the significance of the label. The atmosphere is hushed and vaguely reverent, with the sales staff taking on the role of temple acolytes. Popular with the 30-65 age range, this women's apparel shop is in a few O'ahu locations including the Miramar Hotel. It sells long, flowing dresses and shawls, perfect for hot weather and lazy beach days. Although the clothes are definitely tropical, you won't see any traditional muumuus or sarongs here. The handiwork of many artists is displayed at this store. Much of it is wearable art: handpainted dresses, T-shirts inlaid with Austrian crystal, and so forth. The biggest sellers are almost not even noticeable at first glance. They're called Photo Friends- picture frames in the shape of stick people and pets. This place is almost too urban for Hawai'i, even though a big city such as Honolulu really merits its own Diesel store. Spacious, stylish and sleek, this store appeals to young hipsters with quite a substantial clothing budget. It has all kinds of tropical headgear, from a classically-styled, handmade Montechristi Panama to a great line of straw hats made on Hawaii's "Big Island". Located on the Coconut Grove side of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the store also has a pretty good selection of Hawaiian retro-print tropical shirts and accessories. Wearing a hat is strongly suggested in the islands, and there is no better place to get one than here. Something a bit different
1450 Ala Moana Boulevard
(Ala Moana Center)
Honolulu, HI 96814
United States
+1 808 949 7828
This is not your average surf shop. In fact, this shop takes pride in the fact that it is unlike any other clothing and accessories store in the area. The philosophy here is that you can't please everyone and you shouldn't try. The store may not always keep up with the trends, but it provides a kind of style that appeals to a select group. Hipster fashions range from streetwear to surf styles and skatewear. You'll also find a hip and engaging atmosphere and all sorts of fun trinkets to keep you busy browsing.

Shibori Collection

Sophisticated, beautiful apparel
1200 Ala Moana Blvd
(in the Ward Center)
Honolulu, HI 96814
United States
+1 808 589 1077
This shop offers upscale Oriental-inspired styles for women. Intimate and serene, the shop is located just next to the Mocha Java Cafe and across from Gallery at Ward Center. Clothing is made of flowing silk or rayon blends, and is usually monochromatic or very subtly patterned. The styles are lovely, sophisticated and expensive. A dress at this store could easily cost a few hundred dollars, but the buyer is assured a distinctive style.

+1 808 924 2198
http://www.tattoowaikiki.com/
The name may seem like a cargo and shipping establishment, though the South Pacific Tattoo Company is anything but that. One can judge the caliber of a tattoo parlor by the specialist artists they have, and this one ranks right up there. Whether tribal, kanji, lettering or portrait work, you'll get a specialist for each. They also do cover ups of unsightly designs one might previously have acquired. One more thing, they've been tattooing the military for over two decades...how's that for making a mark!

United States
+1 808 524 4159

In no way does the name of this place hint at the merchandise. It sounds like it could be a skate or outdoor store. Instead it is a hip, busy retailer of flattering fashions for women. It advertises itself as "retro," but it's really not. While some of the styles have a slightly '70s style, they have a modern edge as well. Everything from short shorts to evening gowns is sold here. The clientele is comprised of women of all ages. Located in the Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Supreme Gifts

Crystal specialists in Waikiki
2250 Kalakaua Boulevard
Honolulu, HI 96815
United States
+1 808 923 6734
One of the most popular gifts from Hawai'i is a small, finely-cut crystal pineapple by Swarovski. This name is known throughout the world for its charming, well-crafted crystal. Its signature pineapple, in addition to many many other items for crystal collectors, can be found at this store on the third floor of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki. The store also has fine crystal tableware, quality jewelry of all kinds and many other gifts. It's a pricey place, but you can find excellent items. Though locals know about this place and may even visit it from time to time, the majority of customers are from off the island. After all, a local has little use for a crystal pineapple; the real thing can usually be found right in the back yard.

You may spot a park bench outside TNT, but don't let that fool you. It's a tattoo and piercing parlor as good as they get. Tribal and Hawaiian to cover ups and customs, they do it all. Their expertise is as varied as their clientèle. Rappers from the Boo Ya tribe on one hand and Lance and Joey from N'Sync on the other have all had tattoos done at TNT. The piercing outfit came later (in 1993) but Dr.Dave's been tattooing since 1980.

This nifty store features imported Polynesian and Tahitian garments, more exotic and unusual than the Aloha wear found at most Honolulu retailers. You'll find a wide range of unique products here, including Monoi coconut oil, hand-dyed and hand-blocked pareos, black pearl jewelry and hand-carved mother-of-pearl accessories. These include shell-decorated hair combs and shell jewelry. In addition to the many styles displayed on the sales floor, the store offers custom hula outfits for dancers.

Taj Clubhouse

Aloha prints for tiny tots
1050 Ala Moana Boulevard
Honolulu, HI 96814
United States
+1 808 592 1900
http://www.tajclubhouse.com/
Children's clothing for Size 8 and smaller kidlets is on display in the front of this store; toys are in the back. All of the apparel features colorful Aloha prints. Some toys, such as alphabet blocks and stuffed animals, are meant for very young children, while others are intended for older ones. There is a decent selection of school and art supplies arranged along the side wall. Accessories such as backpacks and bags are also for sale. This store is located in the ritzy Ward Warehouse. It is a child-friendly place, as long as the children remain on a short lead. The store maintains a calm and quiet atmosphere—quite a feat when you remember the average age of customers. Then again, the polished parents who shop here tend to know how to subdue screaming children...if their children are ever misbehaved enough to scream in the first place.

Natural-fiber fashions
1450 Ala Moana Boulevard
(Ala Moana Shopping Center)
Honolulu, HI 96814
United States
+1 808 973 0566
This boutique specializes in moderately priced, contemporary, natural-fiber women's fashions in easy silhouettes and fabrics including machine-washable European linens, hand-painted American cottons, vintage kimono silks and Indonesian batiks. There's a large selection of vests made of silk, tapestries, linens and batiks. You will find unusual jewelry and accessories here too. The shop is small but eyecatching, thanks to the brightly colored garments on display. Locals and tourists come here to get that "ethnic" look that is so popular at Hawaiian functions. Other locations are at Fort Street Mall downtown and Pearlridge Center.

What do you make of a lobby that's also an art gallery showcasing artistic talents of tattoo artists? Or of the waiting area that's a psychedelic sea shell? Or the tattoo and piercing area itself, which, spread over 1000sq.ft looks more like a dentists chamber? You're at Tattoolicious, where everything exudes creativity and innovation. And it reflects in your tattoos too, whether flash designs or custom artwork. The great thing about Tattoolicious is that they don't see tattoos and piercings as ends in themselves. They see a bigger picture. Their artwork on you is just an extension of that picture.

Town & Country Surf Designs – Ward Warehouse

Big Shop, Small Mall
1240, Ala Moana Boulevard
Honolulu, HI 96814
United States
+1 808 592 5299
http://www.tcsurf.com
Town and Country Surf Designs is another large local surf company in Hawaii, named for the south shore (town) and the north shore (country) of Oahu. With locations all over the state, the Ward Warehouse store is a local favorite. It's within a couple miles of Waikiki and located just blocks from the large, and often crowded Ala Moana Mall, but part of the much smaller Ward Warehouse shopping center. The shop itself has a big selection of surf gear and apparel, including nearly 100 surfboards in stock on a daily basis. Vintage surfboards also hang from the ceiling to make for an interesting décor. If you like the idea of getting something for yourself or perhaps gifts that are unique to Hawaii, without being over-crowded or over-priced, this just might be your best bet. -Rex Davidson

The exotic and unique styles in this boutique make use of bold prints and bright colors. Some of the clothing features brocade, sequins or Austrian crystal. You'll see quilted jackets with embroidery, fitted evening gowns, slinky tank tops and sexy sundresses. The accessories are meant to complement the outfits. A lot of the designs in here grab one's attention even while hanging on the racks. On the right woman, they could turn heads just about anywhere. They might be over-the-top for some occasions, however.

On one side you'll find white silk tank-tops, cream suede pants, and cocktail gowns shot through with silver. The clothing is perfectly suited to women who enjoy a modern, fast-paced, professional lifestyle. It offers fashions for every occasion, from cocktail parties to boardrooms to "casual" dates. The apparel hits the perfect balance between elegant and daring, sophisticated and sexy. It is middling-expensive, and most of the serious shoppers seem to have a fairly well padded clothing budget.
