Favorite local sundry stores

Honolulu, HI 96815
United States
+1 808 926 1811
http://www.abcstores.com
Whether you're looking for flip-flops, cheap beach mats or chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, the neighborhood ABC store is the first place to go. It's a one-stop shop for inexpensive souvenirs, beach gear and sundries. While some of the merchandise found here is a little bit silly (hula dolls and aloha-print backpacks), some of it is highly practical. The stores are frequented by locals and tourists. The address of one of the largest stores is listed below. Others are sprinkled throughout Waikiki.

http://www.artlines.net/
This tiny boutique is crammed with ethnic jewelry and exotica from ports around the world. Indonesian filigree silver, Russian amber, and beadwork from many cultures sit cheek-by-jowl with African tribal masks, sari silks, colorful contemporary Indonesian carvings and mother-of-pearl mosaic home accents from the Middle East. Incense wafts through the air, and flute music plays softly in the background. The shop's floor is an interesting, undulating modern mosaic. This shop is a complete aesthetic experience, offering delights for at least four of the five senses.

This is an accessory store by definition, but it specializes in high-quality leather goods. Located inside Ala Moana Center, Bally is a a far cry from some of the generic accessory shops you'll find nearby. The company has a 140-year history and approximately 45 stores worldwide. The leather goods sold here are, for the most part, imported from Italy. Handbags, luggage, belts and shoes are among what you'll find in stock.

This boutique is smaller than the original location on Kuhio Street, but still features Black Flys' popular surf/skate line of eyewear. This store also carries specialty items like pants, shorts, T-shirts, skateboards, hats, and backpacks for men and women, girls and boys. Gone now is the stage for impromptu performances and the no charge pool table but the lounge feeling to their retail space is still going strong. A music section featuring local and national artists is a new addition, but all your favorite sunglasses and apparel are still at the heart of the "House of Flys", now located on the 2nd floor of the International Marketplace in Waikiki. -Rex Davidson

Boutique Marlo

Understated, artistic tropical fashion
2301 Kalakaua Ave
(Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, Ilima Court, Second Floor)
Honolulu, HI 96815
United States
+1 808 923 7077
This store provides an alternative to the loud, busily patterned garments that often seem to define Hawaiian style. The clothing here is decidedly tropical (in fact, much of it was made locally), but it is more subtle and easy on the eye. Pastel floral patterns are handpainted on raw silk to create soft, simple styles. Other garments feature batik patterns or solid pastel coloring. The garments all feature flowing, feminine lines. Wooden and glass beads accessorise the fashions perfectly.

Honolulu, HI 96815

At this world-class designer boutique, a glittering diamond necklace costs only slightly more than an economy car. Pendants, collars, bracelets and rings are displayed in individual windows, with plenty of space allotted to each precious piece. For shoppers with less than a few million in the family account, Bvlgari offers watches and other small accessories. Of course people who simply want to have something by the label can purchase a bottle of fragrance for about $60.

This shop is small yet striking - standard for Cartier. Decorated all in black and gold, the place is a study in sheer elegance. The understated, minimalist displays only accentuate the significance of the label. The atmosphere is hushed and vaguely reverent, with the sales staff taking on the role of temple acolytes. For the people (and there are many) who can't afford the princely jewelry, there is a selection of accessories: watches, pens, silk scarves and so forth.

Popular with the 30-65 age range, this women's apparel shop is in a few O'ahu locations including the Miramar Hotel. It sells long, flowing dresses and shawls, perfect for hot weather and lazy beach days. Although the clothes are definitely tropical, you won't see any traditional muumuus or sarongs here. The cut of the fabric is less stylized, and the fabric itself is softer. Silk and rayon are the favored fabrics, not cotton. The shop also sells hats, beads and other accessories.

1200 Ala Moana Boulevard
Honolulu, HI 96814

+1 808 593 2224
The opposite of neighboring boutique Handblock in almost every way, this modern, clean-edged store is a great place to shop for masculine gifts. It caters to men who live 'the good life', offering a wide array of pleasure items including humidors, cigar cutters, top-shelf Scotch, designer cologne and so forth. The clientele and decor are both urbane and sophisticated. There isn't an excess of merchandise; it's as though the buyer knew what he liked and didn't bother with anything else. Other than the attractive blond sales girls, there are almost no women in the store at any time. It's got a very "boys club" feel about it. It seems to be imbued with the spirit of the ultimate playboy of them all, 007.

High profile celebrities are known to "borrow" designs when they attend the Oscars each year, and even the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louvre have displayed Winston's exclusively crafted works. The stores, or "salons" as they are called, maintain a high profile, and this one in Honolulu is no exception. Salvatore Ferragamo

Elegant, expensive, prestigious label

Ala Moana Shopping Center, 2nd Level
Honolulu, HI 96814

The Ala Moana retailer of this prestigious Italian label is large, spacious and busy. The showroom is remarkable due to its long, narrow design. Looking into it is almost like looking into a wide corridor. Couches are set out in the middle of the floor, while the merchandise is displayed along the walls. Conservative, elegant shoes for men and women are on display, along with handbags, clasp wallets and silk ties. A display case of sunglasses is located in the front of the store.

Shibori Collection

Sophisticated, beautiful apparel
1200 Ala Moana Blvd
(in the Ward Center)
Honolulu, HI 96814
United States
+1 808 589 1077
This shop offers upscale Oriental-inspired styles for women. Intimate and serene, the shop is located just next to the Mocha Java Cafe and across from Gallery at Ward Center. Clothing is made of flowing silk or rayon blends, and is usually monochromatic or very subtly patterned. The styles are lovely, sophisticated and expensive. A dress at this store could easily cost a few hundred dollars, but the buyer is assured a distinctive style.

French-Polynesian flavor

This nifty store features imported Polynesian and Tahitian garments, more exotic and unusual than the Aloha wear found at most Honolulu retailers. You'll find a wide range of unique products here, including Monoi coconut oil, hand-dyed and hand-blocked pareos, black pearl jewelry and hand-carved mother-of-pearl accessories. These include shell-decorated hair combs and shell jewelry. In addition to the many styles displayed on the sales floor, the store offers custom hula outfits for dancers.

Tattoolicious

More than tattoos
1909, Ala Wai Boulevard
Suite C1, Royal Aloha Residential Building
Honolulu, HI 96815
United States

What do you make of a lobby that's also an art gallery showcasing artistic talents of tattoo artists? Or of the waiting area that's a psychedelic sea shell? Or the tattoo and piercing area itself, which, spread over 1000sq.ft looks more like a dentists chamber? You're at Tattoolicious, where everything exudes creativity and innovation. And it reflects in your tattoos too, whether flash designs or custom artwork. The great thing about Tattoolicious is that they don't see tattoos and piercings as ends in themselves. They see a bigger picture. Their artwork on you is just an extension of that picture.

Thongs & Things

Not what you think
1050 Ala Moana Boulevard
Honolulu, HI 96814
United States
+1 808 593 8229
Don't get the wrong idea! The main attraction at this store is shoes, more specifically, flip-flops. Everyone from babies to grannies can shop here comfortably - and they do. The selection is fabulous, and there are other accessories for sale as well. However, the name does seem to be a deliberate play on words. No one in Hawai'i uses the word 'thong' to describe footgear. They say 'slippers', and they laugh at mainlanders who say anything else. So you thought this store sold Brazilian-style swimwear for hardbodies - well, you weren't the only one.
