ABC Stores

Favorite local sundry stores
205 Lewers Street
off Kalakaua Avenue
Honolulu, HI 96815
United States
+1 808 926 1811
http://www.abcstores.com
Whether you're looking for flip-flops, cheap beach mats or chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, the neighborhood ABC store is the first place to go. It's a one-stop shop for inexpensive souvenirs, beach gear and sundries. While some of the merchandise found here is a little bit silly (hula dolls and aloha-print backpacks), some of it is highly practical. The stores are frequented by locals and tourists. The address of one of the largest stores is listed below. Others are sprinkled throughout Waikiki.

Ala Moana Gift Lode

Unique gifts and collectibles
1450 Ala Moana Boulevard
(Ala Moana Center, Garage Level)
Honolulu, HI 96814
United States
+1 808 941 6161
The selection of souvenir and gift items in this store is impressive, to say the least. The owners take pride in finding merchandise that can't be found in other stores. In a city like Honolulu - especially in a mall like the Ala Moana Shopping Center - that's quite a challenge. However, they succeed fairly well. Some very lifelike replicas of 20th-century guns are displayed behind the counter. Dyed leather wallets are functional and unusual. Hawaiian checkers will intrigue game players. In addition to these items, all of the standard souvenirs are also for sale.

Sportswear and beachwear for women of all ages is sold at this store. It offers something for just about everyone. Sexy little nothings are displayed next to hardcore sports bras and no-nonsense flowered one-piece bathing suits. There's also a nice selection of flattering lingerie: chemises, two-piece sets, camisoles and so forth. There are two other store locations on O'ahu, one in the Hilton Hawaiian Village Shops and one in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.

Aloha Health Foods

Herbal medicines and supplements
1050 Ala Moana Boulevard
Honolulu, HI 96814
United States
+1 808 591 8803
Don't plan on doing any real food shopping here. This store mainly carries supplements, vitamins, herbal medicines and other bottled items. Essential oils are in the front, along with sesame, grape seed and other oils intended for topical use only. Of course, you can find large supplies of melatonin and herbal uppers in the middle of the store. While some packaged foods are available, this place seems like more of an herbal apothecary than anything else. It's small, quiet and healthy smelling.

Honolulu, HI 96815-2543
United States
+1 808 926 1900
This spacious, upbeat store occupies a corner of the Waikiki Shopping Plaza that faces out onto Kalakaua Avenue. It is busy but not crazy, and the local staff is friendly and helpful. The clothing is mostly appropriate for the beach. There are a lot of shorts, t-shirts and tanktops on display. In a place such as Hawai'i, where streetwear, beachwear, sportswear and resortwear are interchangeable, the apparel sold here is appropriate for any occasion short of a five-star dinner.

This tiny boutique is crammed with ethnic jewelry and exotica from ports around the world. Indonesian filigree silver, Russian amber, and beadwork from many cultures sit cheek-by-jowl with African tribal masks, sari silks, colorful contemporary Indonesian carvings and mother-of-pearl mosaic home accents from the Middle East. Incense wafts through the air, and flute music plays softly in the background. The shop's floor is an interesting, undulating modern mosaic. This shop is a complete aesthetic experience, offering delights for at least four of the five senses.

Honolulu, HI 96815
United States
+1 808 926 6886
http://www.avantishirts.com/
Specializing in "vintage Aloha wear", this store offers upscale resortwear for men and women. The patterns are more akin to the Hawaiian styles of 40 years ago than the loud fashions of today. The distinguishing feature of the garments is the fabric. They're made of very thin silk, cool on the body and more form-flattering than cotton or polyester. Even if you don't like prints or you don't wear dresses, you'll probably be somewhat tempted to try one of these garments on for size.

One of Honolulu's best-known purveyors of Hawaiiana and collectibles, this funky store on the fringe of Waikiki claims to carry the world's largest selection of vintage Aloha shirts. Perfect-condition collector's items from the heyday of Aloha shirts (the 1930s to 1950s) easily fetch $500 and up, and stylish "vintage reproductions" cost $30 to $100, but you can also find wearable second-hand shirts for around $20. Other collectibles include old Zippo lighters, kitschy 1950s knick-knacks and World War II memorabilia. A stuffed gorilla in a grass skirt stands at attention outside.

In a place like Waikiki, where the beach is always just a few blocks away, shops like this one will always be a hit. Selling swimwear, beachwear and accessories for all ages and sizes, this store caters to anyone who wants to look good for the Hawai'i beaches. The clothing sold here is flimsy, filmy and eye-catching. While it could be worn during the hottest months of summer on the mainland, it's best suited to balmy, humid Honolulu, where almost no one hesitates to strip down.

Located in the Rainbow Bazaar section of the Hilton Hawaiian Village , this bookstore is a peaceful, pleasant spot to relax and get out of the sun. It is good-sized, with the majority of the front floor space dedicated to Hawaiian books. Not surprisingly, the newsstand and paperback sections, the two most popular for beach reads, are the next largest, while all of nonfiction is crammed into one section. You can actually outfit an entire family, from infants on up to grandfathers, at this popular island clothing retailer. Somehow, in spite of the store's bent toward blues and purples, men can wear the styles without looking too silly. They're great for women, of course: flowing, graceful, vivid and picturesque. Pastel solids and simple prints are used to create the clothing line. Accessories are also sold. There is a second Blue Ginger at 227 Lewers Street in Waikiki, as well as a few stores on Maui.

Honolulu, HI 96815

This store provides an alternative to the loud, busily patterned garments that often seem to define Hawaiian style. The clothing here is decidedly tropical (in fact, much of it was made locally), but it is more subtle and easy on the eye. Pastel floral patterns are handpainted on raw silk to create soft, simple styles. Other garments feature batik patterns or solid pastel coloring. The garments all feature flowing, feminine lines. Wooden and glass beads accessorise the fashions perfectly.

This shop is the most recent incarnation of the establishment Thomas Burberry opened in 1856 in Hampshire, England. The original store began with a high commitment to innovative fabric and outerwear design, and that continues to be true of the chain today. This location, in Honolulu's fashionable Ala Moana Shopping Center, is typical of all Burberry shops, but you'll find the winter clothing line a little sparse, for obvious reasons. The company motto is Porsum, which translates from the Latin as "forward" and reflects the momentum of this Ala Moana store.

Short and tall, fat and skinny, representing animals, vegetables and minerals - among other things - the candles at this store are something to behold. Mickey, Minnie and Santa Claus are represented in wax, along with Hawaiian hula girls and blushing brides. Actually, the wedding and Hawaiiana selections are the best. The 'Wee Wizard' designs are also quite charming, if a bit kitschy. For people who prefer simple styles, there are rows of sweet-smelling, hand-dipped candles by Island Soap and Candleworks.

This shop is small yet striking - standard for Cartier. Decorated all in black and gold, the place is a study in sheer elegance. The understated, minimalist displays only accentuate the significance of the label. The atmosphere is hushed and vaguely reverent, with the sales staff taking on the role of temple acolytes. It caters to men who live 'the good life', offering a wide array of pleasure items including humidors, cigar cutters, top-shelf Scotch, designer cologne and so forth. The clientele and decor are both urbane and sophisticated. There isn't an excess of merchandise; it's as though the buyer knew what he liked and didn't bother with anything else. Other than the attractive blond sales girls, there are almost no women in the store at any time. It's got a very "boys club" feel about it. It seems to be imbued with the spirit of the ultimate playboy of them all, 007.

The cute, furry toys found here are intended to stir up childrens and adults interest in the plight of endangered animals: If we don't look out for them, we're going to lose them, and then the stuffed animals will be all that's left.

Glam up and pout for the camera. At this photo studio, the dowdy librarian is transformed into a coiffed beauty queen—in less than an hour. In the classic tradition of 80's glamour studios, this place teases hair and applies sparkly makeup with abandon. It caters to a primarily Asian clientele; families and other groups are welcome. While walk-ins are accepted if space is available, it's recommended that you make an appointment. Apparently, plenty of people choose to immortalize their Hawai'i vacation with a session in front of the cameras here.

Expensive, sophisticated, cutting-edge couture is for sale at this high-gloss showroom in the Royal Hawaiian mall. Whether the styles are monochrome or pink-and-purple patterned, there's no question that Fendi fashion is a touchstone of style. As with all the designer stores in the mall, couture is on the upper floor of this venue, while more affordable items ('affordable' being a relative term) are on the bottom. Sunglasses, watches and handbags are displayed. The staff here is friendly and upbeat.

One of the most appealing factors about this store (for Westerners, at least) is the fact that even though it's as much of an Asian market as an American one, it has a squeaky-clean Western look instead of the cramped, dark appearance of many Asian food markets. The bakery in the front sells coffee and pastries; a sushi counter is right next to it. The place is located smack-dab in the center of Waikiki, and it is open round the clock - perfect when the late-night munchies hit.

The stores, or "salons" as they are called, maintain a high profile, and this one in Honolulu is no exception. It sells all kinds of things besides coffee and chocolate, including marzipan, ice cream, fancy cigarettes and locally made beef jerky. There's also an espresso counter and a gift section. This is a great place to go for a cup of iced coffee if you're out wandering in Waikiki. The proprietress is sweet and shy and will not try to hard-sell customers on anything. Smaller shops such as Cielo, Sanrio Surprises and Thinker Toys cater to more specific shopping needs.

As far as Aloha shirts and island accessories go, wearing them seems to be the norm - it's all a matter of how far you take it. This place has better quality, more low-key merchandise than many Waikiki stores.

How much do you love shoes? Sports? Sports figures? If your answer is, "Very, very much," this is your place. Pay homage to a variety of sports heroes, and outfit yourself to get out and play the game. The Honolulu store pays particular tribute to the triathalon and its competitors. Employees at this store can point out the islands' best places to run, cycle and swim. A variety of autographed shoes previously worn by top atheletes such as Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods are on display.

While some of the clothing here looks like it could come from Africa, it's actually 'Polynesian tapa prints on hand batik', to quote the proprietress. The abstract patterns are usually in pastel or neutral tones. The resulting fashions are elegant ethnic, perfect to wear at a resort or on a safari. The store itself is serene and pleasant. Exposed beams, light wood floors and ceiling fans make for a cool, natural ambience. New Age music plays in the background.

The focal point of this jewelry shop is a stunning hollowed-out chunk of amethyst that weighs in at 1,200 pounds and is large enough for a normal person to sit in. While it is in fact for sale, it's not really representative of the merchandise usually on offer at this store. The specialty here is opals: flashing fiery ones, vivid tanzanite, and the most exotic of them all, the entrancing black opals. Black and pink pearl creations are also for sale.

The red volcanic soil of Hawai'i inspired the creators of this now-famous line of T-Shirts. Each unique shirt is dyed using Hawaiian soil that has amazing staining properties. Also, a Kahuna has blessed the earth in the ancient Hawaiian tradition, a practice that's commonly thought to bring luck to the wearer. The shirts and other apparel make great souvenirs of the Hawaiian Islands and are great conversation pieces. There are also stores on neighbor islands.

By all accounts, this is a great place to shop for a bachelor pad that needs aesthetic improvement. Interestingly, it's also very popular with women of all ages. While the fierce tribal masks, exotic soapstone carvings and lush tapestries won't blend into the background in every home, they definitely add a certain something. The store is cool and comfortable. It carries a fabulous selection of art, crafts and clothing, but its specialties are the soapstone carvings and African mahogany.

The front window display of this store is rather remarkable. It features hundreds of tiny animals carved out of semi-precious stones, the smallest ones being tiny enough to fit in a thimble. All the colors of the rainbow are represented. In the back are ornaments fashioned of malachite, rose quartz, onyx and other semi-precious stones. The jewelry is impressive as well. The pieces are large and striking, featuring fire opals, tourmalines, rubies and the like.

Dainty and intimate, this upscale store offers the kinds of little extras that are used to wrap presents for special occasions. Expensive wrapping paper, artistic gift bags and hundreds of gift cards for every occasion are for sale. There are also some items that are gifts themselves: journals, birthday books, calendars and the like. This is a good place to look for wedding or graduation invitations. The ones in stock - not to mention the ones that can be special ordered - are far superior to anything you'd find in a drugstore or even a regular stationer. Customers here tend to be female, but aside from that they don't all into any single demographic. Everyone enjoys looking at the merchandise. Little girls make a beeline for the scented paper and cute calendars. Teenagers frown thoughtfully over invitations, dreaming of graduation and greener pastures. Adults shop for stationery, thank-you notes and other small miscellaneous items. This is the sister store to Handblock, also located in the Ward Center.

Supreme Gifts

Crystal specialists in Waikiki
2250 Kalakaua Boulevard
Honolulu, HI 96815
United States
+1 808 923 6734
One of the most popular gifts from Hawai'i is a small, finely-cut crystal pineapple by Swarovski. This name is known throughout the world for its charming, well-crafted crystal. Its signature pineapple, in addition to many many other items for crystal collectors, can be found at this store on the third floor of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Waikiki. The store also has fine crystal tableware, quality jewelry of all kinds and many other gifts. It's a pricey place, but you can find excellent items. Though locals know about this place and may even visit it from time to time, the majority of customers are from off the island. After all, a local has little use for a crystal pineapple; the real thing can usually be found right in the back yard.

Aloha prints for tiny tots

Honolulu, HI 96814
United States
+1 808 592 1900
http://www.tajclubhouse.com/
Children's clothing for Size 8 and smaller kidlets is on display in the front of this store; toys are in the back. All of the apparel features colorful Aloha prints. Some toys, such as alphabet blocks and stuffed animals, are meant for very young children, while others are intended for older ones. There is a decent selection of school and art supplies arranged along the side wall. Accessories such as backpacks and bags are also for sale. This store is located in the ritzy Ward Warehouse. It is a child-friendly place, as long as the children remain on a short lead. The store maintains a calm and quiet atmosphere—quite a feat when you remember the average age of customers. Then again, the polished parents who shop here tend to know how to subdue screaming children...if their children are ever misbehaved enough to scream in the first place.

There's a large selection of vests made of silk, tapestries, linens and batiks. You will find unusual jewelry and accessories here too. What do you make of a lobby that's also an art gallery showcasing artistic talents of tattoo artists? Or of the waiting area that's a psychedelic sea shell? Or the tattoo and piercing area itself, which, spread over 1000sq.ft looks more like a dentists chamber? You're at Tattoolicious, where everything exudes creativity and innovation. And it reflects in your tattoos too, whether flash designs or custom artwork. The great thing about Tattoolicious is that they don't see tattoos and piercings as ends in themselves. They see a bigger picture. Their artwork on you is just an extension of that picture.

At first glance this place can be mistaken for a unisex salon. It's busy, modern and hip, far from the traditional image of a barbershop. But a barbershop it is. Even during the middle of a weekday, every stylist is usually booked. Bottles and tubes of products by Matrix, Systeme Biolage, VaVoom and other famous names are crammed onto the shelves in front. Honolulu, HI 96814

+1 808 593 8229
Don't get the wrong idea! The main attraction at this store is shoes, more specifically, flip-flops. Everyone from babies to grannies can shop here comfortably - and they do. The selection is fabulous, and there are other accessories for sale as well. However, the name does seem to be a deliberate play on words. No one in Hawai'i uses the word 'thong' to describe footgear. They say 'slippers', and they laugh at mainlanders who say anything else. So you thought this store sold Brazilian-style swimwear for hardbodies - well, you weren't the only one.

Honolulu, HI 96814

http://www.tcsurf.com
Town and Country Surf Designs is another large local surf company in Hawaii, named for the south shore (town) and the north shore (country) of Oahu. With locations all over the state, the Ward Warehouse store is a local favorite. It's within a couple miles of Waikiki and located just blocks from the large, and often crowded Ala Moana Mall, but part of the much smaller Ward Warehouse shopping center. The shop itself has a big selection of surf gear and apparel, including nearly 100 surfboards in stock on a daily basis. Vintage surfboards also hang from the ceiling to make for an interesting décor. If you like the idea of getting something for yourself or perhaps gifts that are unique to Hawaii, without being over-crowded or over-priced, this just might be your best bet. -Rex Davidson

A lot of textile products are also sold here: Hawaiian quilts, hotpads, oven mitts and the like. Raggedy Andy and Raggedy Ann dolls peep out from the shelves, along with the furry visages of various stuffed animals, large and small.

The impeccable display of fanciful frosted glass bottles adorning this stand's display counter suggests that it offers a very special kind of refreshment—and it does. This place sells icewine, an unusual wine made of grapes that are frozen on the vine and then pressed. The result is a sweet, concentrated wine with a distinctive flavor. It doesn't go cheap (bottles range from $47-$75), but if you're looking for an original gift for a wine connoisseur, this is the perfect choice.
