The selection of souvenir and gift items in this store is impressive, to say the least. The owners take pride in finding merchandise that can't be found in other stores. In a city like Honolulu - especially in a mall like the Ala Moana Shopping Center - that's quite a challenge. However, they succeed fairly well. Some very lifelike replicas of 20th-century guns are displayed behind the counter. Dyed leather wallets are functional and unusual. Hawaiian checkers will intrigue game players. Indonesian filigree silver, Russian amber, and beadwork from many cultures sit cheek-by-jowl with African tribal masks, sari silks, colorful contemporary Indonesian carvings and mother-of-pearl mosaic home accents from the Middle East. Incense wafts through the air, and flute music plays softly in the background. The shop's floor is an interesting, undulating modern mosaic. Perfect-condition collector's items from the heyday of Aloha shirts (the 1930s to 1950s) easily fetch $500 and up, and stylish "vintage reproductions" cost $30 to $100, but you can also find wearable second-hand shirts for around $20. All the top designers (Givenchy, Celine, Cartier, Louis Vuitton) have prominent displays in this enormous store's second floor, which is open to everyone. The store is a 'must-see' for visitors from other countries, who can enjoy substantial savings on everything from liquor to tobacco products to designer cosmetics. The dust is still settling from extensive renovations. The new and improved DFS Waikiki seems to be the same size as a small Polynesian village. While that's a bit of an exaggeration, it is an enormous space, three floors high and half a block wide. The customers are from all different parts of the world. The opposite of neighboring boutique Handblock in almost every way, this modern, clean-edged store is a great place to shop for masculine gifts. It caters to men who live 'the good life', offering a wide array of pleasure items including humidors, cigar cutters, top-shelf Scotch, designer cologne and so forth. The clientele and decor are both urbane and sophisticated. There isn't an excess of merchandise; it's as though the buyer knew what he liked and didn't bother with anything else. Other than the attractive blond sales girls, there are almost no women in the store at any time. It's got a very "boys club" feel about it. With locations all over the state, the Ward Warehouse store is a local favorite. It's within a couple miles of Waikiki and located just blocks from the large, and often crowded Ala Moana Mall, but part of the much smaller Ward Warehouse shopping center. The shop itself has a big selection of surf gear and apparel, including nearly 100 surfboards in stock on a daily basis. Vintage surfboards also hang from the ceiling to make for an interesting décor.
