Located just inside the loop in the Galleria area, this restaurant is one of the best-kept secrets in Houston. A casual dining experience complete with televisions so you don't miss that important game. The menu here is wonderful. Spicy crab claws, gumbo and crab bisque are all great choices for appetizers. For an entree, try the Snapper Courtney. Be prepared as the entrees are very large and filling. Try to save room for the Key lime pie.

Spicy Seafood with Hints of Mexico
1312 West Alabama St
Houston, TX 77006

+1 713 523 5230
This is a relatively cozy spot for romance or for hanging with friends. Thanks to the popular bar, the crowd in the evenings can get a little wild on occasion. If you are in the mood for a quiet evening, it might be wise to dine early. The typical Mexican fare is delicious, but the grilled seafood choices are the dishes that will melt in your mouth and keep you coming back for more. Selections can get a little pricey but they are worth every bite. The seafood and spinach enchiladas are a favorite and so is the Chile Relleno.

Although many patrons still grumble about the closing of this restaurant's long-standing old shrimp boat location, fans have made the transition to this new location. The quirky atmosphere and delicious offerings are simply too good to pass up. Regulars love to bring their friends in for some after-work relaxation. Beyond oysters, the menu is pretty limited, but true oyster fans certainly will not mind in the least. Both the fresh and the batter-dipped versions are popular with guests. The original version of this restaurant opened in the old Shamrock Hotel, which was a landmark to most Houstonians. Years later, it is in a different location but still serves up hot fried fish and seafood daily. This is an old school restaurant with many faithful customers. Fried seafood and steaks make up the bulk of the menu. It is not exactly health conscious eating, but most loyal patrons would not want them to change a thing. After you have had a bite or two you will probably agree.

This popular seafood restaurant's location is the same, but the building it occupies is newer and bigger to accommodate the crowds it draws on weekends. There is also a seafood market inside, and you can pick your own fish or lobster for your meal. Although the standard fried seafood offerings are delicious (fresh, crispy and nearly grease-free), this is the place to try something different. The light and refreshing Pulpo Cocktel (fresh octopus, avocado, pearl onions, tomato, cilantro and serrano peppers) is a real bargain. Or try the flaky Grilled Salmon and Seafood Soup; they are as light on the wallet as they are on the waist. The servings are generous here, so order a variety and let everyone share. Mexican sodas, frozen margaritas and imported beers are also available.

Once you get over the name and appearance of this very unpretentious restaurant, you will fall in love with their delicious menu offerings and convenient hours. This is the ideal spot for dining out with the little ones. There is plenty of child-friendly offerings on the menu and the kids are welcome to write on the tables and walls. If you are hungry but do not want to miss the big game, take a table in the back dining room with its big-screen television, or up front at the sports bar. Although the menu offers some lighter fare, including soups and salads, the emphasis here is on good old comfort food. The crispy chicken-fried steaks, served with seasoned fries and surprisingly good cream gravy, are a menu favorite ($6.50+). If you are especially hungry, try the immense Swiss Mushroom Burger ($3.50+). The servings here are big, so be prepared to take home leftovers. Dirty's features a full-service bar, with beers starting at $1.75 and cocktails at $2.50.

This is not your average sushi bar. The décor in this popular restaurant is modern noir, with high-backed black leather window booths and red lights. The sushi is amazing (flown in fresh three times a week) and perfectly portioned. But what puts this place over the top are the other menu items, like the miso-marinated silver cod that melts in your mouth, or the loaded Continental miso soup with clams, seaweed, tofu, and rice. On the weekends, you'll find a "Mercedes crowd" in their Manolo Blahniks, but you can miss the crowds (and some pretentiousness) during the week and at lunch. -JoAnn Takasaki

Loud and colorful is the name of the game at this Cajun-inspired seafood restaurant. The eclectic decor includes fishing nets and metal signs. It is not classy, but it is "boatloads" of fun for diners of all ages. Cajun influences are present in most of the dishes, so be prepared for a little spice. The Crawfish Etouffee is the most popular selection. You will probably have to wait for a table during peak times. This place really hums and reservations are not accepted.

This is just one of the many Pappas restaurants that prevail in Houston. No matter, the cuisine this family seems to have the recipe for success. Soft lighting and 1920s brass-rimmed decor give this Galleria-area favorite a sense of class and style. The old-fashioned phones located in every booth are real and never fail to stimulate conversation. Live entertainment further ensures a memorable evening. The menu is steak-heavy, but alternate seafood selections, such as Maine lobster, are available. Menu prices are a steal for very high quality food. Wines are available too; and a glass costs a reasonable amount! Reservations are recommended, but not required.

This classic favorite manages to combine funky wharf decor with elegant table arrangements to create a finished atmosphere that seems just right. Although it is popular with business diners during the day, the soft lighting particularly appeals to couples in the evenings. You will find that menu items like the soft shell crab or stuffed flounder are more than worth the expense. The menu says that the Greek salad is for two, but it will feed four or more.

When dining in this prestigious Galleria restaurant, expect to be surrounded by lots of business types, tables of socialites and maybe even a TV anchorperson or two. If people do not interest you, maybe the breathtaking wall murals will. Outdoor seating is available in fair weather, and live entertainment plays in the lounge in the evenings. Expect to spend $9 to $25 for an entree, and $4.50 for a glass of the house wine. Fortunately, most selections, such as the grilled wild boar chops with a honey-chili-ancho glaze, will take the sting out of the expense. Reservations are recommended, but not required.

Typically bustling with people during the major dining hours, customers can still relax and enjoy a meal in a casual, comfortable atmosphere. Jazz or blues typically plays in the background.
