Late weekends
3245 Southwest Freeway
Houston, TX 77027

Casual simplicity is the motif at this Mexican restaurant. It is the perfect setting for hanging out with friends, particularly on those late Friday and Saturday nights. Outdoor seating adds additional appeal in fair weather. Sample some sizzling fajitas, served with all the fixings and fresh flour or corn tortillas. A wine list and full bar are not available, but plenty of bottled beer and frozen margaritas are available to go around. Menu prices range from $2 to $10 per person. Reservations are not accepted.

The Mexican decor seems a little aged in places, but longtime fans do not mind in the least. Families love to gather here for reliably good food, time after time. Nearby businesses have also made it a popular gathering place for after-hours office parties. The Tex-Mex is good, but you will not be able to keep your chips out of the excellent salsa. If you can manage to keep from ruining your appetite with chips, the garlic shrimp comes highly recommended, especially when accompanied by a tangy house margarita.

The rock-paved, cave-like interior, with psychedelic light fixtures and curvy purple and red banquettes, is dramatic and unusual, to say the least. The excellent menu attracts a broad range of diners, but it is most popular with younger generations and fans of novel dining experiences. The menu comprises of items such as the Gulf Snapper with crusted corn justifying the expense. Tropical drinks are the specialty of the house or you can sip a glass of house wine. Delicious barbecue may be pretty easy to find in Houston, but it is not easy to find a place that entertains you with a live blues band while you chow down. This joint livens it up and spices it up, all at the same time. The full-blown Texas barbecue menu is impressive, and you are certain to enjoy any number of items. Expect to spend a moderate amount for a meal, but you will probably end up staying for quite a while and spending more.

Located in West Houston, this restaurant has been family-owned for more than 16 years. If you are looking for casual dining at a good price for the whole family, then look no further. This is definitely it. Homemade barbecue sauce is a specialty here. Delicious and spicy, try it smothered all over your sliced or chopped brisket. The tender sausage is cooked so slowly you will wonder why the waiter bothered to give you a knife. Old-fashioned cooking is done here daily.

This is a relatively cozy spot for romance or for hanging with friends. Thanks to the popular bar, the crowd in the evenings can get a little wild on occasion. If you are in the mood for a quiet evening, it might be wise to dine early. The typical Mexican fare is delicious, but the grilled seafood choices are the dishes that will melt in your mouth and keep you coming back for more. Selections can get a little pricey but they are worth every bite. The seafood and spinach enchiladas are a favorite and so is the Chile Relleno.

A pulsating rhythm of drums spill out onto the patio oasis of Byzantio on Thursday nights. The deep sound of the drums is offset by the tinkling staccato of the finger cymbals that the belly dancers skillfully use to punctuate the sway of their hips. Despite the throngs of enthusiastic, mostly male crowd on Thursday nights, Byzantio's low-slung couches, deep-seated chairs, and stone mosaic bar in the converted bungalow provide an excellent space for conversation or a game of backgammon. Another Pappas creation, this steakhouse follows tradition by showing yet again how incredibly talented the family is when it comes to food. The beautiful, serene interior is perfect for either romantic or business dining, especially for those who are trying to make a good impression. Choosing your cut of beef will be the only hardship you endure while dining here. The rib eyes, filets and T-bones are all highly recommended. In the Pappas tradition, the desserts are also heavenly, but it is doubtful that you will have any room left over. Take one home for later. The attire is business casual, a jacket or tie for a gentleman is recommended but not required.

Two scenic patios play a major role in this restaurant's popularity. Expect the after-work crowd to be large and rowdy, especially on Fridays, but it usually gets a little tamer as the evening progresses. Across the street, the Spanish Colonial look of St. Anne's Church adds to the illusion of outdoor dining in Mexico. A few regional Mexican specialties are offered, but most selections are strictly Tex-Mex favorites like nachos, burritos and chimichangas. It is hard to make a bad choice, but the fajitas are always popular if you need help deciding. Tangy margaritas provide the perfect finishing touch.

This popular seafood restaurant's location is the same, but the building it occupies is newer and bigger to accommodate the crowds it draws on weekends. There is also a seafood market inside, and you can pick your own fish or lobster for your meal. Although the standard fried seafood offerings are delicious (fresh, crispy and nearly grease-free), this is the place to try something different. The light and refreshing Pulpo Cocktel (fresh octopus, avocado, pearl onions, tomato, cilantro and serrano peppers) is a real bargain. Or try the flaky Grilled Salmon and Seafood Soup; they are as light on the wallet as they are on the waist. The servings are generous here, so order a variety and let everyone share. Mexican sodas, frozen margaritas and imported beers are also available.

What happens when a former beauty pageant contestant and a former professional Mexican wrestler get together? They open a restaurant, of course! That was back in the ‘60s. It closed in the ‘90s, but their sons revived it and now have three locations throughout Houston. Sure they have items like lobster enchiladas, but why bother with the fancy stuff when you can enjoy the Tex-Mex fare the sons learned from their mother? Start off with the chorizo con queso while waiting for a plate of Betsy’s tamales. Wash it all down with a margarita. Enjoy drink and food specials during 3p-6p Happy Hours. -JoAnn Takasaki

Once you get over the name and appearance of this very unpretentious restaurant, you will fall in love with their delicious menu offerings and convenient hours. This is the ideal spot for dining out with the little ones. There is plenty of child-friendly offerings on the menu and the kids are welcome to write on the tables and walls. If you are hungry but do not want to miss the big game, take a table in the back dining room with its big-screen television, or up front at the sports bar. Although the menu offers some lighter fare, including soups and salads, the emphasis here is on good old comfort food. The crispy chicken-fried steaks, served with seasoned fries and surprisingly good cream gravy, are a menu favorite ($6.50+). If you are especially hungry, try the immense Swiss Mushroom Burger ($3.50+). The servings here are big, so be prepared to take home leftovers. This barbecue restaurant, with its casual counter service, will not impress with elegance, but instead relies on friendliness and tasty food. The brisket especially enjoys "Do Not Ignore" status. Its signature barbecue sauce offers a rich blend of sweet, smoke and spice and turns every dish into epically delicious. Dinner prices are reasonable, and a glass of house wine is worth trying. Reservations are recommended, but not required.

Counter ordering may seem a bit tacky, but the casual atmosphere is friendly and warm. This Montrose-area favorite is a home-away-from-home for families and quick solo diners. Outdoor seating is particularly popular in fair weather. Whether you decide on Tex-Mex beef fajitas or stick to a good old American burger, the food and the prices will not disappoint you. Round off with a house wine.

Barbeque lovers and chicken fried steak aficionados have been flocking to this popular Heights area family restaurant since 1986. There is no table service, but you are welcome to grab an icy soda or beer from the old fashioned drink case while you wait to order. The rustic wood walls, vintage signs and formica tables spell out casual dining. There is plenty of seating indoors, or you can stake out a table on the small covered patio. On the weekends, there is dinner and a show when bluegrass bands take to the stage in the back dining area. The generous barbeque brisket plate, served with tangy house sauce and two sides, is dependably delicious and bargain-priced. Other popular dishes include the crispy, chicken fried steak. A kid's menu is available, and there are plenty of desserts for everyone to choose from. If you want something stronger than the iced tea served in mason jars, beer and Texas wines are both available.
