A.C. Fiorentina

Enthusiastic team and passionate supporters
Piazza Girolamo Savonarola
Florence
http://www.acfiorentina.it
Founded in 1926 A.C. Fiorentina (otherwise known as the "Viola") are passionately, if at other times somewhat over enthusiastically, followed by their loyal band of supporters. They entertain their fans at the Artemio Franchi stadium which has a ground capacity of circa 47,495. Although they have won the Italian championship only twice in their entire history, the club maintains a proud and historic place within Italian football. In recent times Fiorentina have experienced many highs and lows. After having been relegated for the first time since 1938 in the 1992/93 season, Fiorentina returned to the top flight of Italian football the following season as Serie B champions. Since then Fiorentina have slowly re-established themselves once again as a force in Serie A. In 1996 they won the Coppa Italia for the fifth time in their history, their first major trophy since they last won the cup in 1975. They also added the Italian Supercup in 1996 after having beaten the mighty A.C. Milan 2-1 at the San Siro with both goals coming from their current idol Argentine star Gabriel Omar Batistuta. The club is renowned for their famous purple kit that they wear as well as for the attractive style of football they play. Their popularity worldwide was further enhanced by their president Vittorio Cecchi Gori, the charismatic film distributing magnate.

http://www.carnevalediivrea.it/
info@carnevalediivrea.it
Also known as the Battle of the Oranges, the Carnivale D'Ivrea of Turin has a long history. In the 1800's, spectators of a parade began throwing oranges at the participants, and the latter reciprocated in the same manner. Over the years, it evolved into an organized mock battle, with a fixed set of rules demanding that all participants officially enrol, and buy the oranges as ammunition - if you're in Turin in February, this is one event you shouldn't miss out on! See the website for further details.

The Venice Carnival is a two-week celebration of mysterious masked balls, parades, theatrical productions, music and general gaiety. In the costumed tradition of carnivals of the 18th century, the streets and various venues throughout the city are filled with activity. The many masked balls and galas held throughout the festivities are a perfect opportunity to donn the traditional hoods, capes and black masks, concealing one's identify and making carnival mischief all the more fun! Major music festival
Piazza di San Giovanni
Rome, Rome 00184

The 1 May concert has become one of the biggest events on Italy's music scene. It arose from a trade union idea to celebrate the Festa del Lavoro (Work Festival); the concert received such public and critical acclaim that it broke away slightly from its origins and became a music festival. The programme starts in the early afternoon, with a succession of music groups, in roughly 30 minute slots. The evening brings famous groups who play for a bit longer. Concerts are free and draw attention to social issues.

Cosmoprof & Cosmopack

International cosmetics salon
Viale della Fiera 20
Bologna 40127
+39 51 28 2111

dir.gen@bolognafiere.it
With display area of 9,900 square metres and 256 exhibitors, Cosmopack is the largest international show dedicated to creative packaging, raw materials and technology and service for the cosmetics indusrty. It takes place every April, in pavillions 19 and 20, inaugurated in 1999. By now, this is decidedly an independent show within Cosmoprof, which has its own individual attractions, and infact will publish its own specific catalogue, separate from that detailing the rest of the exhibits. This catalogue has been completely rewritten and updated thanks to the work of a new marketing division, which makes it even easier to consult, and has seen the addition of several articles on cosmetic packaging.

The new company strucure which has allowed this new independence will contribute greatly to the success of this year's event, attracting crowds of technicians, buyers and marketing consultants from the international cosmetics agencies, among others: Cosmopack also offers its exhibitors the opportunity to meet all their most important clients, who are also exhibiting at Cosmoprof, over the course of four days.

Feast of San Gennaro

Very superstitious
Via Duomo
Naples, Naples
The anniversary of the execution of Naples' patron saint and protector San Gennaro is marked at the Duomo and continues with an emotional procession to Santa Chiara. Gennaro (250-305) was the bishop of Pozzuoli, martyred during the reign of Diocletian. During the ceremony, two glass phials of the saint's blood are meant to liquify before the expectant congregation. A notable liquifaction is considered a good omen to the city, while even a partial failure prefigures doom. The phials are thereupon carried in a joyous procession to a nearby convent. Free admission.

During the night Venetians picnic on roast duck, watermelon, wine, and various sweets and wait for midnight when the fireworks display takes place. Natale di Roma

The birth of Rome
Piazza Venezia
Rome 00187
+39 6 48 8991 (Tourist Information)
Every year on 21 April, the birth of Rome is celebrated in grand style. Tradition states that this day in 753BC saw the creation of the city, which conquered almost all the known world. Although this tradition originates from popular stories and is not founded in historical fact, official celebrations still take place. The majority of these occur near to the 'Milite Ignoto' (tomb of the unknown soldier) in Piazza Venezia and near the Fosse Ardeatine on Via Ardeatina, where wreaths of flowers are placed and the best bands (primarily military bands) are on parade.

Commissioned by King Charles of Bourbon, Europe's oldest working theatre was built in 1737. It wasn't long before its magnificent architecture and exquisite blue, gold and silver décor, complimented by a programme with wider public appeal, was attracting praise from both home and abroad. Completely destroyed by a fire in 1816, Ferdinand I of Bourbon ordered the theatre to be rebuilt just six days later. As a result the acoustics, still regarded as perfect, were improved and the stage extended. The opera season begins in January in Naples.

San Gennaro Festival

Day of the patron saint
Piazza Cardinale Sisto Riario Sforza
Nalpes, IT 80139
The celebrations for Naples' patron saint usually begin on or around September 16th and continue until the Sunday after the saint's day. This is an ancient ritual: the first festival is thought to have been held at the end of the fourteenth century, when the blood of San Gennaro, kept by the bishop of that era, returned to a liquid state on the anniversary of the Saint's martyrdom: September 19th. Since then, Naples commemorates the miracle with a fascinating religious procession, with rose petals and silver statues of saints and with pagan celebrations throughout the city.
