Many Hawaiian companies are owned by mainlanders or foreigners who fell in love with the islands and decided to stay. That is not the case for this tour company. Owner (and president) Bogart Kealoha was born in Hawai'i and has spent his whole life exploring his birthplace, Kauai. The name of his company means "family," and each of his employees aim to provide the kind of tour that could normally only be experienced if a Kauai local was a close friend or family member. Tours visit swamps, valleys, hidden beaches and waterfalls. The price starts at $150 per person for a 50-minute tour.

The "veggie vessels" that are owned by this tour company work in cooperation with local restaurants. The same oil that is used to cook a meal one night might be used to cruise to the reef the next morning. Daytime snorkeling excursions visit the dolphins, explore the caves, and tour the coral reefs. Evening sightseeing tours usually coincide with the sunset. The captains and tour guides are well trained in environmental awareness.

Beginning windsurfers often exclaim that the sport is harder than it looks. Avid windsurfers will retort that it is more than worth the trouble. Cruising through the water at speeds of 20 miles per hour or more, borne only by the power of the wind and the sail, is a heady experience. People who want to get past the challenge and into the fun of the sport should book time with the pros at Anini Beach. Knowledgeable and friendly, the instructors can accommodate any age or experience level. The introductory lesson comes with a satisfaction guarantee.

Kauai's eastern side is home to many natural attractions, not the least of which is this enormous lava cave wreathed in ferns. You will need to take a river tour in order to catch a glimpse of it. If you want to make a day trip out of it, take one of the more rugged kayak tours. These include a few other stops past the grotto. Speedboat tours are faster and also include entertainment and refreshments.

If you travel to the end of Highway 56, you will reach this state park. The park is best known for its three sea caves, Kee Beach (a lovely swimming and snorkeling spot), and for its hiking trails. The trails here are not extremely rugged; a four-mile hike takes just a few hours. Explore the caves, which (as legend has it) were created by the goddess Pele. Two of the caves, now filled with seawater, were once gathering spots for island chiefs.

Hanakapiai Falls

Natural Jacuzzi and pool
Kalalau Trail
Ke'e Beach, North Shore
Kauai, HI 96714
United States
This is one of the most breathtaking (in more ways than one) of Kauai's many natural wonders. In order to reach it, one must hike approximately four miles along the Kalalau Trail, starting at Kee Beach. While this is a journey for intermediate to advanced hikers, many people attempt at least the first half of the journey. The two-mile beach along the path is lovely, as are the many lookout spots along the way. The waterfall at the end of the journey are unbelievable. Pouring from a point 300 feet above the pool, it creates a pristine natural spa. Note: Do not attempt this hike if it is raining. Do not swim at Hanakapiai Beach; it has had more fatalities than any other beach on Kauai.

Hanalei Pier

A great spot for family picnics
End of Weke Road
(At Black Pot Beach Park)
Kauai, HI 96714
United States
A visit here fills sightseeing requirements and leaves plenty of time to relax. The pier is located in busy Black Pot Beach Park, and is nearly a century old. Agricultural exporters originally docked their vessels here, but it ceased being of any commercial importance years ago. Now it is a landmark and a hangout spot. Kids gleefully jump off the edge of the pier (a short fall, but good for a splash) while adults sunbathe, fish or talk story; pidgin for "shooting the breeze."

Blockbuster films such as "Jurassic Park", "Honeymoon in Vegas" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" have been shot on Kauai, Hawaii's oldest island. The state's only movie tour operator provides high-energy, family-oriented tours of Kauai's most famous movie locations—and some lesser-known ones, as well. There are very few ways to visit the island of Ni'ihau, otherwise known as the Forbidden Island. This is one of a select few companies that can bring non-natives onto the shores of the Hawaiians only island. It also offers luxury snorkel tours, whale watches, sunset cruises and private charters. While these excursions cannot quite offer the mystique of the Ni'ihau adventure, tourists might still be won over by the protected cabins and the free-flowing beer and wine. Motor and sail cruises are offered.

Playground created for kids

Kauai, HI 96746

It looks like something out of Disneyland or Universal Studios, but in fact, this wondrous playground is just a community project, built by the parents and used by the children of Kaua'i. There are mazes, special slides, swings and much more. Parents can relax in the Japanese garden while the children play. More than 7,000 people helped to create this playground in the autumn of 1994. While parents built the structures and landscaped the surrounding area, kids kept busy designing tile artwork in all colors of the rainbow. The cheerful, fanciful tile creations decorate the playground to this day. Admission is free.

Back-roading takes on a whole new meaning after you have experienced one of these wild rides. Yamaha or Honda 250 Semi-Automatic ATVs are the mode of transportation, and adventure is the point of the journey. Different tours are offered including a private guide tour, a waterfall tour and a scenic plantation tour. The little four-wheel vehicles are sturdy, fun and ready for any kind of road—or no road at all. The course goes down dirt roads through the cane fields, up ridges and along the coast. While the ride is not smooth and clothes can get muddy, thrill seekers should enjoy this tour quite a bit. Call for prices and tour times.

This is a far cry from bus or helicopter touring. It takes place on a private plantation on the south shore of Kauai. Participants bike down a cane road through a sugar plantation and then hike a coastline trail to a patch of rainforest. Lunchtime is enjoyed at an isolated beach on the Mahaulepu coast. The tour company, Aloha Kauai Tours, bills its adventures as "the essence of eco-tourism," and indeed, these tours are about as back-to-basics as could be imagined. They are appropriate for novice and intermediate hikers from ages 8 and up. Also available are snorkeling and 4x4 tours throughout the island.

Make your way to this establishment located off Highway 56 in Hanama'ulu. Choose between Backcountry Zipline and Mountain Tubing tours—the first has you dressed up in a swimsuit, sitting in a tube (you read that right!) making your way through streams and canals. The second option will make you feel the wind beneath your wings! You harness yourself with a rope that extends from a mountain to a valley across water bodies and trees. Then you simply descend at the most rapid speed possible, aided by gravity! The tours are offered in an area of 17,000 acres, formerly occupied by plantations.

Any anglers who thought deep-sea fishing was the only variety of the sport offered in Hawaii are bound to be pleasantly surprised by Kauai. The waters of Kauais Waita Reservoir are teeming with one of the most unusual fishes in the world: the peacock bass. Until recently, the bass was only found in South America, but it thrives in the warm Hawaiian waters. Interestingly, this organization is both the protector and the hunter of the bass. It ensures that they are well-fed and flourishing. Although it operates fishing charters, it has a strict tag-and-release policy.

It's said that when Jack Nicklaus created the Kiele Course, the terrain lent itself so well to his vision that he made but a single change to his original design. So it's no surprise that this incredible 7,070-yard resort course is hailed as one of the finest golf gems in the Pacific. The Kiele has a sense of style uniquely its own. Fairways weave along imposing ocean cliffs, over promontories high above Nawiliwili Harbor, and among some 40-acres of fresh water lagoons. Lush groves of exotic foliage thrive amongst the holes. A solitary rotunda sits on the water off the 17th tee: an exquisite wedding chapel. Every hole is marked by a white marble statue of an animal or mystical being: Happy Buddha, Elephant, Swan, Dragon, and of course, The Golden Bear, in tribute to the master golfer who master-minded the course.

This resort, which was named to "GOLF Magazine's" 1998 list of "Gold Medal Resorts," features two regulation eighteen hole courses. The Kiele Course is very demanding and requires several shots over ravines. "Golf Digest" rated it the 6th "Best in State" course in 1995-96, and 7th in 1997-98. In addition, "GOLF Magazine" nominated it 64th among the "Top 100 Course You Can Play In The U.S." in 1998. The Lagoons Course is a bit easier and much more forgiving off the tee. Carts are mandatory on the Kiele Course, while golfers may walk the Lagoon Course at designated times.

Participants travel through forests, fields, up inclines and down riverbeds. Along the way there are plenty of sights to see; the Menehune Fish Pond and the Haupu Mountains are two of the main ones. One of the best ways to see the canyon is to hike the easy Iliau Nature Loop, located between Mile Marker 8 and 9. A half-dozen other trails are available. Some of them are easy and some are arduous. Less hardy sightseers will want to tour the area by helicopter or boat. There are several companies that offer Na Pali adventures.

This business offers some of the best high-ticket hunting west of Africa. The island is only inhabited by a few native Hawaiians, but until recently, the inhabitants were the only ones permitted to hunt the island's boar and sheep, but the family that owns the island recently opened certain areas up to non-hunters. The hunt is guaranteed to be challenging, but a good hunter should be able to bag a boar or a ram. Assistance obtaining a Hawaii State hunting license (though not the cost of the license itself), round-trip transportation to the private island of Ni'ihau, transportation on the island itself, a guide, a skinning crew, lunch, snacks and cold drinks, trophy care in the field, boxing of horns and skins for a taxidermist, and two animals are included in the price per day. This company knows all the best spots and stays open all year round. It offers a number of shore and boat dives, night dives and other special excursions. Braver spirits will want to try a shark dive, while less fearless folk may opt to dive with sea turtles. Lava tubes and other remnants of ancient volcanic activity provide myriad places for advanced divers to explore. This company caters more to advanced divers. It can set you up with accommodations upon request.
