This annual event that takes place every February celebrates Captain Cook's arrival in the islands. For two days, the town is filled with a multitude of sporting events ranging from a canoe race to a marathon. On the edge of town, you'll even find a carnival complete with Hawaiian food and fun. The perfect weather of the Hawaiian Islands influences many of its residents to lead comparably active lifestyles. In fact, there are even competitions for the keikis (children)! Get your child involved in this annual outdoor event that takes place at Kilohana Plantation in Lihue. The course spans one mile for kids ages 6-10, two miles for 11-16 year olds. Sponsored by family-owned CJM Country Stables, this event showcases the best horsemen (and women) on the island. Events include barrel racing, pole bending and several roping contests. Equestrian enthusiasts may want to see how Kauai's talent matches up with that of mainland cowboys or neighbor island paniolos, while people who don't know a thing about horses will enjoy the show and the novelty of it all. Picking up where the Hike Guide Training Series leaves off, this summertime program introduces people to the many wonders of Kauai's ecology. Tromp through acres of secluded, protected land on the wild West Side of Kaua'i. Learn about the many species of flora and fauna in this exotic place. The events are only a bit strenuous, but just the same, Koke'e Museum asks that all guests please remember to dress properly and bring plenty of water. Admission by donation.
